A Zabrak Force-sensitive Outcast
The designation "Force-Sensitive Outcast" was utilized during the Republic Era to describe Force-sensitive beings who pursued their individual goals, rejecting the paths of both the Jedi and Sith. These outcasts typically resided on the fringes of the galaxy, wielding a lightsaber and utilizing the Force to forge their own destinies. While some of these individuals managed to avoid detection or recruitment by either the Jedi or Sith, others had undergone training within one of these organizations but subsequently departed—sometimes voluntarily, sometimes through expulsion. Certain Force-Sensitive Outcasts were self-taught, employing their abilities to amass wealth or exert influence outside the bounds of established law. With the emergence of the Imperial Era and the almost complete annihilation of the Jedi Order, an increased number of Force-sensitive individuals chose to remain hidden or declined to embrace either the Jedi or Sith path in order to ensure their survival.
Ahsoka Tano, a Padawan during the Clone Wars, departed from the Jedi Order but continued her efforts to aid those in need throughout the Imperial Era. Around that time, Maul was banished from the Sith Order and the Rule of Two lineage by his master, Darth Sidious, leading him to operate within the criminal underworld, amassing influence and power through illicit syndicates such as the Shadow Collective and Crimson Dawn. Asajj Ventress, a Nightsister, rejected the doctrines of both the Jedi and Sith, seeking only to live alongside her lover, Quinlan Vos, during the height of the war, before choosing to sacrifice herself to save Vos's life on Christophsis, only for her to survive the ordeal.
During the High Republic Era, Ty Yorrick, a Tholothian, received training as a Padawan within the Jedi Order. However, circumstances eventually led her to leave the Order, becoming a "saber-for-hire" and an independent monster hunter. Yorrick later collaborated with Jedi Master Stellan Gios and Padawan Bell Zettifar in their fight against the Nihil pirates.

Before the Clone Wars, Asajj Ventress was an apprentice to Jedi Knight Ky Narec. However, following her master's death at the hands of Weequay raiders, Ventress succumbed to the influence of the dark side of the Force and disavowed the Jedi way. Subsequently, Ventress was recruited by Sith Lord Darth Tyranus, publicly known as Count Dooku of Serenno, to serve as a Dark Acolyte. During the Clone Wars, Ventress held a command position within the Confederacy military, bearing the title of Supreme Leader and gaining notoriety as a formidable assassin for Dooku. In 20 BBY, Tyranus attempted to eliminate Ventress at the Battle of Sullust due to his master, Darth Sidious, becoming wary of her increasing power.
Having survived the battle, Ventress found herself an outcast, rejected by both the Jedi and the Sith. Exhausted, Ventress sought refuge with the Nightsisters of Dathomir, the coven of witches into which she had been born before being taken by the enslaver Hal'Sted. With the aid of Mother Talzin and the Nightsisters, Ventress began to plot her revenge against the Sith Lord who had betrayed her. Following several unsuccessful assassination attempts, Tyranus unleashed his wrath upon the Nightsisters, dispatching the Separatist Droid Army, led by Supreme Commander General Grievous, to eradicate the witches. The Nightsisters were subsequently annihilated, leaving Ventress alone once more.

Asajj Ventress, now working as a bounty hunter and leveraging her Force abilities for an advantage, became entangled in the Jedi Order's scheme to assassinate Count Dooku. In alliance with Jedi Master Quinlan Vos, the former Sith-aspirant trained Vos in the mastery of the dark side of the Force, combining it with the light, in an effort to prepare themselves for confronting Dooku.
As the teacher and disciple spent more time together, training on the desolate world of Dathomir, they developed feelings for each other. When the moment arrived to strike at Count Dooku, the Sith proved too powerful for Ventress and captured Quinlan Vos, who succumbed to emotions such as fear, anger, and hatred, ultimately falling to the dark side. Burdened by the guilt of introducing Vos to a power he was not ready to control, Asajj Ventress sought assistance from the Jedi. Despite joining forces with the Jedi, Ventress remained independent, eventually finding her way back to Quinlan Vos.
During the onslaught of Republic forces in a Separatist tower alongside Vos and Dooku, Ventress, the former Sith acolyte, realized that the dark side led to imbalance and deprivation, and she was able to relinquish her desire for revenge, embracing the light. Asajj Ventress abandoned her intent to kill Dooku, seemingly sacrificing herself amidst the Sith Lord's taunts and counter-attack to protect her lover and prevent the Jedi Order from succumbing to darkness. However, she survived and was alive during the Imperial Era.

In 19 BBY, Ahsoka Tano, a Jedi Padawan, was falsely accused by the fallen Jedi Barriss Offee of orchestrating the bombing of the Jedi Temple hangar. Despite Tano's claims of innocence, the Jedi High Council expelled her from the Order, believing her to be responsible for the bombing. [Anakin Skywalker](/article/anakin_skywalker], Tano's master, successfully uncovered Offee's plot, leading to Tano's exoneration. The Council extended an invitation for Tano to rejoin the Order; however, her faith in the Order had been shattered, and she chose not to return to the Jedi. Subsequently, Tano embarked on a life as a Force-sensitive outcast in the underworld of Coruscant, leaving the Jedi to pursue her own destiny.
During the Siege of Mandalore, Tano received a hologram communication from Obi-Wan Kenobi. Kenobi informed Tano that the Council had assigned Skywalker to spy on Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine. Kenobi suggested that Tano speak with Skywalker, as her former master was unhappy with the assignment. Tano expressed her belief that she was not the most suitable person to defend the Council, considering her own wavering opinions of them. Later, Tano was confronted by the renegade Sith Lord Maul in the Grand Salon of the Sundari Royal Palace on Mandalore. Maul attempted to exploit Tano's dissatisfaction with the Council in an effort to persuade her to join his cause.

After successfully capturing Maul, Tano expressed her discontent with the Jedi's role in the war to Clone Commander Rex during their return journey to Coruscant aboard the Venator-class Star Destroyer Tribunal. Similar to Offee, Tano had developed a dislike for the Jedi's involvement in the Clone Wars, particularly their ongoing transformation from peacekeepers to soldiers. Rex shared his thoughts on the war, stating that without it, he and his clone brothers would not exist. Tano conceded that this was one positive outcome of the war and thanked Rex for being a good friend. However, following the execution of Order 66, the clone troopers aboard the ship turned against her and attacked her. Tano rescued Rex from the influence of the inhibitor chip by removing it and escaped with him in a BTL-B Y-wing starfighter/bomber as the Tribunal began to crash onto a nearby moon.
After the downfall of the Jedi and the Galactic Republic and the rise of the Galactic Empire, Tano found her purpose in assisting those in need in the Outer Rim Territories. Deviating from the Jedi path, Tano served the galaxy's inhabitants through her connections with others, inspiring those suffering under the Empire's oppression to rebel and fight for freedom.

In 3 BBY, Tano visited the Lothal Jedi Temple alongside Jedi Padawan Kanan Jarrus and his apprentice Ezra Bridger. Accessing the temple required a Force-sensitive individual to raise it from the ground. Bridger suggested that Tano raise the temple; however, Tano, no longer a Jedi, stated that she was unable to do so. Later, during the Mission to Malachor, Tano encountered the Sith Lord Darth Vader. Refusing to believe that her former master could be as evil as Vader, Tano declared that she would avenge Anakin's death. Vader questioned Tano's words, suggesting that revenge was not the Jedi way. Tano then ignited both of her lightsabers while stating that she was no Jedi, making clear her separation from the Jedi path. After surviving that duel thanks to Bridger's intervention from the World Between Worlds, Tano was joined by the Mandalorian Sabine Wren on her journeys, during which she trained Wren as her Padawan learner. When Wren and Tano reunited for the quest to find Bridger and Grand Admiral Mitth'raw'nuruodo "Thrawn" in 9 ABY, Wren resumed her training under Tano, who herself experienced a final lesson with her deceased master Skywalker via the World Between Worlds.
In 32 BBY, Darth Maul, the Dark Lord of the Sith, was defeated in battle by Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi on the planet Naboo. Maul's mangled body was transported to the junk world Lotho Minor, where he gradually descended into madness over a decade. After being discovered and rehabilitated by his brother, Savage Opress, Maul resolved to reclaim his position as a Sith. However, after Sidious killed both Opress and their mother, Talzin, Maul felt betrayed by the Sith and sought revenge against his former master.

Maul established a criminal organization known as the Shadow Collective and initiated a hostile takeover of the planet Mandalore. Having been defeated by both sides of the Force, he realized that he had been nothing more than a pawn of Sidious and vowed to prevent the Sith's domination of the galaxy. During the Siege of Mandalore, when Ahsoka Tano arrived to liberate the planet from Maul's rule, he empathized with their shared disconnection from their respective orders and asked her to join him in defeating Sidious. Tano inquired as to why Maul opposed the Sith, to which he responded that the Sith had taken everything from him.
Maul was among those targeted by Order 66, his master's plan to eliminate the Jedi. As Tano was being pursued by clone troopers aboard the Tribunal, she released Maul from his vault and tasked him with creating chaos to facilitate her escape. Maul sabotaged the ship's hyperdrive, and as the Tribunal began its crash course towards the moon, he absconded with a shuttle to find a place within the new regime.

Following the establishment of the Galactic Empire, Maul retreated into the shadows of the galaxy and resumed his criminal activities, becoming the secret leader of the Crimson Dawn syndicate. During this period, he was hunted by the Inquisitorius, Sidious' cadre of Jedi hunters. He remained in this position until he was stranded on the Sith world Malachor, where he remained trapped until the arrival of Ezra Bridger, who sought knowledge to destroy the Sith. When questioned by Bridger, Maul confessed that he was neither Jedi nor Sith and harbored deep resentment towards the Dark Lord for cursing his life.
Maul insisted that he was not a Sith, correcting the Seventh Sister of the Inquisitorius when she referred to him as "Darth Maul," stating that he was no longer known by that title. He continued to seek a partner in the dark side, however, and attempted to make the Padawan Bridger his apprentice. Later, after discovering that Kenobi was still alive, he tracked the aging Jedi Master to the desert outskirts of the planet Tatooine and confronted him in a final duel. Maul was mortally wounded in the encounter, and in his final moments, he realized that Kenobi was protecting a boy who he considered to be the Chosen One, a hero prophesied to defeat the Sith. With his last words, Maul told Kenobi that the boy would avenge them both.
