A human female named Harter Kalonia worked as a doctor for both the New Republic and the Resistance. In addition to her medical duties, she was a Resistance officer with the military rank of Major. Kalonia was based at the Resistance base on D'Qar three decades following the Battle of Endor. Notably, she provided medical care to Chewbacca and Finn after their respective injuries during the Battle of Takodana and the Battle of Starkiller Base.
In the year 5 ABY, Doctor Harter Kalonia collaborated with Leia Organa to monitor and support her health during her pregnancy. A key recommendation from Kalonia was the inclusion of jogan fruit in Organa's diet. Han Solo took this suggestion quite literally, famously acquiring and delivering a huge quantity of jogans for her on one occasion.
By 28 ABY, Kalonia was serving as a medical officer within the New Republic stationed on Hosnian Prime. She maintained a cordial relationship with Greer Sonnel, who was Senator Organa's personal assistant. Kalonia regularly treated Sonnel's bloodburn with injections of Hadeira serum. Following the Napkin Bombing that damaged the New Republic senatorial complex's conference building, Kalonia administered treatment for the moderate injuries sustained by Organa and Sonnel at a nearby medcenter. She instructed her patients to be quiet so she could focus on her work. Afterwards, Kalonia and a med droid assisted a treated Organa onto a transport.
Subsequently, Kalonia provided medical care to Sonnel after a bloodburn attack caused her to collapse before her mission to Sibensko. The mission was to investigate Rinnrivin Di's cartel and the Amaxine warriors. Following the Sibensko mission, Kalonia joined other New Republic officials and former Rebel Alliance members at a private meeting in the Senate hangar bay. It was there that Organa established the Resistance, a paramilitary organization created to defend the Republic from external threats.
Six years later, Kalonia held the rank of major within the Resistance, serving under the leadership of General Organa during their conflict against the First Order. Her post was at the Resistance base located on the planet D'Qar. As Vi Moradi prepared for her Mission to Batuu, she engaged in a conversation with Kalonia, seeking information about Archex. Kalonia had treated Archex after he was beaten and poisoned by Phasma, and she oversaw his recuperation on Cerea. While Kalonia was generally against sharing a patient's medical details with others, she made an exception for Moradi, who was about to embark on a mission with a man who had recently tortured her, and agreed to provide some information. However, their conversation was interrupted by General Organa's announcement regarding the destruction of the Hosnian system. Kalonia voiced her shock and dismay at the immense loss of life. Moradi offered her comfort and emphasized Kalonia's importance to the Resistance. Moradi's mission was subsequently delayed.
Shortly after, she provided treatment for a shoulder injury sustained by the Wookiee Chewbacca. Chewbacca appreciated her kind manner, and Kalonia reassured him during the treatment, commenting that his account of how he was injured sounded "very scary" and praising Chewbacca for being "so brave."
Kalonia also attended to the injuries Finn sustained during his fight with Kylo Ren on Starkiller Base, which involved potentially fatal lightsaber wounds to his shoulder and spine. Kalonia cared for Finn in the intensive care unit at the D'Qar base, marking a rare occasion in her career where she dealt with lightsaber injuries. Finn survived, and Kalonia gave a positive prognosis, though his long-term condition would remain uncertain until his complete recovery. After treating Finn, Kalonia personally updated Rey on his progress. Finn made a recovery shortly thereafter, just as Kalonia had predicted.
Harter Kalonia possessed a high level of medical competence. Despite limited experience in treating lightsaber wounds, she successfully saved Finn's life. In addition to proficiency in Galactic Basic Standard, Kalonia was also fluent in other languages, including Shyriiwook, which enabled her to effectively communicate with Wookiee patients.
Kalonia's attire reflected her dual roles in the military and medical fields. She wore the silver and red rank badge of an army major on the left side of her chest, along with a dark armband signifying medical services (displaying "MED" in aurebesh) around her left upper arm. Kalonia utilized a comprehensive medical field kit, enabling her to treat blaster burns and containing items like antiseptic field generators, bacta bulbs, and synthflesh dispensera. While recognized for her compassion and subtle humor, Kalonia also ensured her patients adhered to her medical advice.
Harriet Walter played Harter Kalonia in the 2015 film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens. Walter, who also portrayed Lady Shackleton in the TV show Downton Abbey, is the niece of the late Sir Christopher Lee, who played Darth Tyranus in Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones (2002) and Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith (2005). A cut scene from The Force Awakens shows Kalonia assuring Rey that "your friend's going to be just fine," in reference to Finn, a scene that was thoroughly detailed in the film's novelization.
