Gupat Roshti

title: Gupat Roshti

During the Clone Wars, Gupat Roshti, a male Togruta, held the position of governor for the planet Kiros. The colony he oversaw, inhabited by 50,000 Togruta, was tragically subjected to kidnapping and subsequent enslavement following an alliance forged between Count Dooku and Zygerrian slavers. Ultimately, a rescue mission led by Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker, alongside his Padawan Ahsoka Tano, Jedi Master Plo Koon, and the soldiers of the 104th Battalion, successfully located the slave processing facility on Kadavo operated by the Zygerrians. This operation resulted in the liberation of Roshti and the remaining survivors from Kiros. Aboard the Venator-class Star Destroyer commanded by Admiral Coburn, the now-freed governor expressed his gratitude to both the Jedi and the Galactic Republic for their intervention and the salvation of his people. In a private conversation with Tano, he revealed the decision of the people of Kiros to align themselves with the Republic.

Kiros Under Separatist Invasion

Roshti telling Yoda that the Separatists had already arrived.

During the [Clone Wars](/article/clone_wars], Gupat Roshti served as the governor overseeing the planet of Kiros. Via hologram, he communicated with Yoda, explaining that his Togrutan Artisan colony lacked any warriors, and an armed conflict would devastate them. Yoda cautioned Roshti against trusting Dooku. Unfortunately, the Separatists had already begun their invasion. Roshti, along with two colonists, met with Count Dooku, the Zygerrian Commander Darts D'Nar, and Dooku's battle droids. Roshti reminded Dooku that his people had chosen neutrality in the war and questioned the reason for the invasion. Dooku asserted that the occupation was peaceful, intended to protect Roshti and the colonists until the war concluded. Roshti then told Dooku he was aware of the unfortunate tales of planets caught between the Separatists' droids and the Galactic Republic's clone troopers.

Roshti inquired about the reassurance Dooku could provide to the colonists, to which the Count responded that while he couldn't halt the fighting, he could offer a sanctuary or "a safe haven until the conflict ended." Roshti expressed his gratitude, and Dooku, placing a hand on his shoulder, insisted and then escorted him away. Subsequently, D'Nar, representing the Zygerrian Slave Empire, instructed an AAT Driver Battle Droid to have the droids gather all the other colonists for kidnapping and enslavement. Consequently, Roshti's Togrutan Artisan colony was seized, with D'Nar establishing himself in the Governor's tower.

News of Roshti and his people's plight reached the Galactic Republic, prompting Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker, Padawan Ahsoka Tano, Clone Captain CT-7567 "Rex," Clone Commander CC-2224 "Cody," and clone troopers from the 501st and the 212th to attempt a rescue. However, ten rotations had passed since Yoda's transmission. They landed in the colony and were ambushed by the droids, defeating them, disarming D'Nar's bombs and capturing D'Nar. Sadly, Roshti and his people had already been transported off-world to Zygerria.

Enslavement on Zygerria

The Togrutas were put up for auction on Zygerria. Rex and the Jedi followed Roshti and his people, hoping to liberate them. Rex and Kenobi, in disguise, located Roshti within a slave pit in the capital city. Kenobi entered the pit to speak with the governor, who was weakened and disheartened. The governor initially resisted Kenobi's help until Kenobi revealed himself as a Jedi, there to assist. Kenobi inquired about the location of his people, but Roshti fainted before he could answer. Kenobi then lifted the governor out of the pit. Kenobi informed Rex that he still needed to know the colonists' location and that they had to extract Roshti from the Zygerrian capital. Kenobi used the Force to jump to a brezak above them and threw the Zygerrian guard into one of the pits. Rex and Kenobi carried Roshti to the brezak, while the guards were alerted. As the brezak traversed the slave pits, the guards fired upon them. Roshti and Kenobi were hit and captured, while Rex managed to escape on the brezak.

At the slave auction, Roshti was presented as the first slave, representing the Togrutan people. The slave auctioneer stated that Roshti's colony consisted of 50,000 members, all of whom were to be auctioned. He also emphasized their lack of combat training, making them incapable of rebellion. Shortly after, two Zygerrian royal guards escorted Kenobi to the auction. Skywalker, Tano, and Rex, aided by R2-D2, attempted to rescue Kenobi and Roshti. However, their efforts were thwarted by the Queen of Zygerria, Miraj Scintel, and her royal guards. Roshti, now joined by Kenobi and Rex in servitude, was transported to the slave processing facility on Kadavo. Upon arrival, Roshti exclaimed that they had found his people. All 50,000 Togrutan colonists had also been transported to the deplorable mining installation on Kadavo, a grueling facility sustained by slave labor. After exiting the Zygerrian ship, Keeper Agruss welcomed Kenobi as the first Jedi detained in his "educational center." Agruss then threw several Togrutas to their deaths, to prove his point and warned Kenobi it would be Roshti and the Togrutan people who suffered if Kenobi attempted to defy him.

Kadavo and Subsequent Rescue

Roshti was assigned to work in the mines at the Kadavo facility. The Zygerrians warned Kenobi and Rex that talking was forbidden. As punishment, one of the Zygerrians pulled out his electrowhip and began to torture Roshti. Kenobi redirected the attention to himself, saying it was his mistake and to leave Roshti alone. In response, a Zygerrian rammed his electrostaff into Kenobi's shock collar. The Zygerrian then told Kenobi a slave was not permitted to give him commands. He pulled his whip back out and ordered Kenobi to beg for forgiveness before Roshti died because of Kenobi's actions. After Kenobi followed the Zygerrian's orders, the guards chuckled mockingly and walked away. Kenobi checked on the beaten Roshti, who told him to keep away from him, as Jedi only made things worse.

Later, Roshti and several Togrutas were barricaded in a room in the at the bottom of the Kadavo facility. A rescue party eventually arrived, consisting of Skywalker, Tano, Plo Koon, the Wolfpack, and Admiral Coburn's fleet. Not too long afterward, Keeper Agruss electrified the walls of the room, to Kenobi's dismay. Agruss opened a hatch, sliding the floor away from the entry point to the room, destroying the controls in the process. Soon after, Tano arrived on the platform and recommended bringing that Admiral Coburn brought the Arquitens-class light cruiser the Hand of Justice under the facility, to rescue Roshti's people. In response, Coburn ordered Commander Wolffe, Sinker, Comet, and a few Wolfpack troopers to exit the topside of the Hand of Justice with jetpacks and cabled guns. After the Wolfpack was in position, Tano instructed the Togrutas to climb down the cables in groups. Roshti was the first to climb down, with his people following afterward. After they were all safely on the deck of the Hand of Justice, Wolffe warned the facility was breaking up. They all ran to the interior of the cruiser, which then moved itself away from the facility. Once the cruiser was clear, Koon ordered the remaining gunships to open fire and destroy the facility.

Subsequently, Roshti was seen aboard Coburn's Venator-class Star Destroyer, along with Tano, Skywalker, Kenobi, and Koon. Roshti expressed his gratitude to the Jedi and the Republic for saving his life and that of his people. Skywalker replied Tano was the real hero and without her creativity, he did not believe Roshti's people would have been brought to safety. In private, Roshti told Tano she had done a great deed to her people. Tano questioned why Roshti was sad. He replied that he was relieved that she and the Jedi did their best. However, he did not believe his people would not recover from the horrors they just went through anytime soon. Tano replied that surviving the endeavor would only strengthen Roshti's people. Roshti smiled and replied that the people of Kiros were going to join the Republic, to which Tano replied that was a wise choice.

Personality and Characteristics

Roshti, like most Togrutas, possessed a peaceful and reserved nature, often relying on others. He opposed war and believed in peaceful solutions. Roshti deeply valued Kiros and its people, willing to do anything to ensure their safety. He desired only peace for himself and his community. Roshti's height was 1.98 meters (6 feet, 6 inches), and he had orange eyes and yellow skin with white markings and blue stripes.

Abilities and Skills

Roshti was renowned for his diplomatic skills and leadership, governing Kiros as the governor of the artisan colony. He was also known for his artistic talent.

Gear

Roshti wore a long-sleeved shirt that was dull green in color. White segments adorned this shirt, while intricate, golden patterns decorated these white segments. A thick, sturdy brown belt was worn around his waist; one rectangular, closed pocket was placed on the right side of this belt. Draped over Roshti's shoulder was a thin, wrinkled purple piece of material.

Tight, dark purple pants were worn over his legs while white, metal boots were worn on his feet. The boots reached up to Roshti's knees and were sealed up by dark yellow buttons.

Behind the Scenes

Gupat Roshti made his debut in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars episode "Kidnapped," which was the eleventh episode of the show's fourth season. His identification as "Gupat" was first established in the 2021 reference book Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Character Encyclopedia - Join the Battle!, authored by Jason Fry.

According to Dave Filoni, the initial script considered having Roshti know or have known Ahsoka Tano's parents to suggest that Ahsoka's instinct to save people is motivated by that. However, the idea was dropped as the crew didn't want to flesh out that scene and Filoni personally felt that Roshti saying that to Ahsoka would sound like something "mean."
