Alrich Wren

Alrich Wren was a Mandalorian male of human descent, who was the husband to Ursa Wren, who led Clan Wren. Upon marrying Ursa, Alrich chose to take his wife's family name, recognizing the power and esteem it carried within Mandalorian society. Together, the couple had two children: a son named Tristan and a daughter named Sabine. In contrast to his wife and children, Alrich was not a warrior; instead, he was an artist. Sabine inherited his artistic abilities, though he self-effacingly attributed her skill to Ursa's influence. Following his daughter's departure from the Imperial Academy of Mandalore, he became a political prisoner in everything but name, held on Mandalore to ensure the compliance of his wife and clan with the occupying Imperial forces.

Sometime after the Battle of Atollon, Alrich's daughter, Sabine, spearheaded a rescue mission to free her father from Imperial captivity. Amidst a fierce ambush on an Imperial convoy transporting Wren to Sundari, the Mandalorian capital, for execution, he was successfully rescued by rebel operative Ezra Bridger and reunited with his daughter.

Later, Alrich joined his family, the Nite Owls, Ezra, and Jedi Knight Kanan Jarrus in the effort to liberate Mandalore from Imperial control. He witnessed Lady Bo-Katan Kryze assume leadership of their people by accepting the Darksaber.

Near the conclusion of the Galactic Civil War, Alrich, along with his wife and son, perished during the Night of a Thousand Tears, leaving his daughter as the sole surviving member of Clan Wren.

Biography

Imperial Era

Alrich Wren was the husband to Countess Ursa Wren, the leader of the Mandalorian Clan Wren. After marrying Ursa, Alrich chose to adopt his wife's surname, a reflection of the prestige and power it commanded within Mandalorian society. Together, they had two children, a daughter named Sabine Wren and a son named Tristan Wren. Alrich and his family were supporters of the Galactic Empire and its New Order, which rose to power following the Clone Wars. During Tristan's infancy, Alrich would frequently take Sabine to the statue of Tarre Vizsla on Mandalore, fostering an appreciation for its art and historical significance.

While Sabine was a student at the Imperial Academy of Mandalore, she created weapons that the Empire used to oppress the Mandalorians. One such weapon was the Arc Pulse Generator, known as the "Duchess," which could react with the beskar alloy found in Mandalorian armor, incinerating the wearer. When Sabine spoke out against the Empire, Alrich and his family sided with the Empire, publicly denouncing her. Subsequently, Sabine went into hiding and later joined the rebellion.

Sabine's actions weakened Clan Wren's political standing. To ensure the remaining Wrens' cooperation, Alrich was held hostage by Governor Gar Saxon, the Imperial-appointed Viceroy of Mandalore and Emperor's Hand. His son, Tristan, was drafted into Saxon's Imperial Super Commandos. Alrich's wife, Ursa, was permitted to continue governing Clan Wren's territory on the planet Krownest, but the family was viewed with suspicion and had to go to great lengths to prove their loyalty to Clan Saxon and the Empire.

Sabine's return

In 2 BBY, Sabine returned to Krownest seeking her family's assistance in aiding the rebellion. Countess Ursa initially declined, not wanting to endanger her husband, Alrich. In an attempt to save her daughter, Ursa attempted to hand over Sabine's Spectres comrades Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger to Governor Saxon. However, Saxon broke the agreement and ordered his men to eliminate Clan Wren. Fortunately for the Wrens, Kanan, Ezra, and the Mandalorian Protector Fenn Rau helped the Wrens repel Saxon's Imperial Super Commandos. Sabine defeated Saxon in lightsaber combat but chose to spare his life. When Saxon attempted to murder Sabine, Ursa killed him instead. Saxon's death ignited the Mandalorian Civil War.

Rescue and reunion

After Clan Wren supported the rebels during the Battle of Atollon, Clan Wren and the Spectres participated in a joint operation to free Alrich, who was being held at a prison outpost on Mandalore. Before Sabine and her forces attacked the prison outpost, Gar Saxon's brother and successor, Governor Tiber Saxon, ordered Alrich to be transported to the capital city of Sundari for a public execution. By the time Ursa obtained this information, Sabine had already left.

Sabine's combined Mandalorian-rebel force, backed by Lady Bo-Katan Kryze's Nite Owls, later ambushed the Imperial convoy transporting Alrich above a canyon. Observing the approaching column, Rau determined that Alrich was in the middle Imperial Troop Transport. While Sabine, Rau, Kanan, and Lady Bo-Katan attacked the convoy's speeder bike escorts, Ezra boarded the transport. After removing the drivers and guards, Ezra freed Alrich from his restraints. After confirming that he was with Sabine but not romantically involved, Ezra gave Alrich his jetpack. While Alrich rocketed out of the transport before it plummeted into a chasm, Ezra used his Force powers to Force jump out of the transport.

Alrich was reunited with his daughter. However, this victory was overshadowed by the news that Ursa and Tristan's forces had been decimated by the weapon known as the "Duchess." Luckily for the Wrens, Ursa and Tristan had found shelter. After rescuing Ursa and Tristan, Alrich and the others evacuated aboard one of Lady Bo-Katan's starships. During the journey to Bo-Katan's camp, Alrich learned about Sabine's involvement in creating the "Duchess." When Sabine's rebel friend Ezra suggested that the Mandalorians use a different material than beskar alloy for their armor, Alrich and the others were shocked. Sabine then explained to him the importance of Mandalorian armor to Mandalorian families.

Upon arriving at Bo-Katan's camp, Alrich and his family participated in a meeting to plan the operation to destroy the "Duchess." Sabine volunteered to lead the mission to atone for her role in creating the weapon. Ursa offered to lead the strike, but Fenn Rau advised her that she was still unable to wield a blaster due to her injuries. Alrich and Tristan convinced Ursa to listen to reason. Alrich and his wife remained at the camp while Sabine and Tristan accompanied the strike team to Tiber Saxon's Star Destroyer, where the weapon was housed. The joint rebel and Mandalorian force successfully destroyed the weapon, the associated data, and Saxon's Star Destroyer.

Following the destruction of the "Duchess," Alrich joined his family and the other Mandalorian clans in pledging allegiance to Lady Bo-Katan, who inherited the Darksaber and the mantle of Mandalorian leadership.

Death in the Night of a Thousand Tears

Alrich Wren and his family died during the Night of a Thousand tears

Towards the close of the Galactic Civil War, the Empire carried out a massacre of the Mandalorian people during the Great Purge of Mandalore. Moff Gideon of the ISB led the Night of a Thousand Tears, bombing the planet, which led to the deaths of Ursa and her family, along with the rest of Clan Wren. Sabine, who had been on Lothal since Thrawn's defeat five years prior, survived and had been training as a Jedi under the tutelage of Ahsoka Tano.

Legacy

Following the loss of her family, Tano ended the training, fearing that Sabine's emotions over the loss of her family were the sole motivation behind her training. Baylan Skoll recounted the deaths of Alrich and the rest of Clan Wren during his confrontation with Sabine on Seatos in 9 ABY, where the fallen Jedi Knight observed that, with the loss of her clan, Wren considered the missing Ezra Bridger the only "family" she had left. This allowed Skoll to persuade Sabine to surrender in order to find Bridger. The Purge and the loss of Clan Wren was recounted to Ezra Bridger on the extragalactic planet of Peridea by architect droid professor Huyang.

Personality and traits

Alrich Wren was a human man characterized by brown eyes, dark brown hair, eyebrows, and a goatee that was beginning to show signs of graying. He was a Mandalorian artist who married into the warrior Clan Wren. His artistic talents were passed down to his daughter, Sabine. As a Mandalorian, he wore Mandalorian armor and was proficient in operating a jetpack. Alrich considered Mandalorian armor to be sacred and was visibly disturbed when Ezra questioned why Mandalorians did not use a material other than beskar. Alrich convinced his wife, Ursa, to rest and recover during the planning phase of the strike operation aimed at destroying the "Duchess."

He was a proud Mandalorian who deeply loved and cared for his family. In contrast to Ursa, who was cold and strict, he was more nurturing and warm. Alrich did not consider himself to be the artistic parent, but nonetheless was able to recognize the evolution of Sabine's personal artistic aesthetic, complementing her improved use of line and color after he was rescued and acknowledging the influence of Tojnun and the Pre-Exile Masters.

Behind the scenes

Alrich Wren was first mentioned in "Trials of the Darksaber," an episode from the third season of Star Wars Rebels. He made his first on-screen appearance in the show's season four premiere, Star Wars Rebels: Heroes of Mandalore, and was voiced by Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa.
