Plot summary

Breaking Free from Narkina 5

Cassian Jeron Andor, along with Ruescott Melshi, another prisoner who escaped with him, are clinging to a high cliff face on Narkina 5. They struggle to maintain their grip, hiding from a passing TIE reaper patrol and waiting for it to leave. Meanwhile, on Ferrix, Andor's adopted mother, Maarva Andor, has died. B2EMO is in a state of despair, and Brasso is trying to comfort him as he grieves the loss of his master. The droid watches as Brasso, Jezzi, and others carry Maarva's body, wrapped for burial, outside. Cinta Kaz is among the onlookers in the town, observing the procession, while Corv, an Attendant from the Imperial Security Bureau (ISB), is disguised as a local and watches from a distance inside the bar.

After the Imperial ship departs, Andor and Melshi successfully climb the cliff and discover a quad jumper near a lake. They also see the owners of the vehicle, a pair of fishers from Narkina, engaged in conversation. They try to steal the ship, but they get caught when they activate a net trap. Elsewhere, Captain Vanis Tigo informs Supervisor Dedra Meero about Maarva's passing and the local plans for a funeral procession, given her prominence in the community. Meero instructs the local Imperial officers to grant the locals a permit for the event. Corv informs Meero that the funeral is scheduled to take place in two days, explaining that this timeframe is required for the Ferrix tradition of cremating the deceased's remains and preserving them as a brick.

Back on Narkina 5, the Keredians Dewi Pamular and [Freedi Pamular](/article/freedi_pamular], who captured the escapees, consider the possibility of collecting a thousand credits reward for each of them. Dewi speaks to the men in Basic, expressing his sorrow at how the Empire's prisons have polluted their planet's water, decimated the squigglies, and caused food shortages. Andor and Melshi argue that they are not responsible. Freedi, speaking in Narkinian, expresses interest in claiming the bounty on the prisoners. Dewi has a change of heart and releases the two humans from the nets, deciding to help them escape. The Keredian asks where they intend to go; Andor replies Niamos. All four leave the planet on the aliens' quad jumper.

The Death of Maarva

Meanwhile, on Coruscant, Vel Sartha pays a visit to Luthen Rael's Galactic Antiquities and Objects of Interest. Kleya Marki is not happy that Sartha has violated protocol and declines to reveal Rael's location. Sartha responds that she will be departing Coruscant the following day. Sartha informs Marki that she has come to deliver news of Maarva's death and the preparations for her funeral. Marki agrees to notify Rael.

On Ferrix, Kaz and ISB Attendant Corv are watching Brasso as he walks with B2EMO. Corv uses his comlink to ask his contacts for information on the "big target"'s whereabouts. Back at the Andor family residence, Brasso and B2EMO discuss attending Maarva's funeral. Brasso insists that the droid accompany him, as he considers him part of the family.

Elsewhere, Bix Caleen is thinking about her interrogation and the torture she endured at the hands of Dr. Gorst. Merzin Keysax leads her from her cell to an interrogation room where Attendant Corv and Prefect Vanis Tigo are waiting. Corv asks if Anto Kreegyr was the one who introduced her to Cassian Andor. He warns that he will bring Dr. Gorst back if she doesn't cooperate. Caleen remains silent but struggles to conceal her emotions.

Mothma's Covert Ordeal

At the Chandrilan Embassy on Coruscant, Mothma and Sartha observe Leida Mothma participating in a courtship ritual that involves reciting a vow. Several Chandrilan girls are dressed in blue, and an elder is present. Mothma tells Sartha that Leida supports the custom, which Vel considers outdated, and is participating with the consent of her husband, Perrin Fertha. Mothma explains that Leida was the one who found the elder.

Later that night, Mothma tells Sartha about her plans to funnel funds to Luthen by establishing multiple accounts. Mothma explains that Tay Kolma, a Chandrilan banker, had warned her a few months prior that the Empire would be scrutinizing Chandrilan accounts. She transferred the money into the main account. However, there was one empty ledger at the end of the line that was off balance. She says that it was so obscure that she didn't know what to do so she sought help from Luthen Rael.

Sartha asks Mothma if she has faith in Tay Kolma. Mothma explains that all funds were frozen following the Aldhani heist. She believed Kolma could assist her in filling the missing funds, but he discovered she was in much more trouble. When questioned by Sartha, Mothma admits that 400,000 credits are unaccounted for. Mothma fears that the Imperial authorities will soon be investigating and admits that Rael is unaware of the full extent of the situation. Sartha and Mothma agree that the financial discrepancy must remain concealed. Mothma tells Sartha that she has found a solution. Leida joins them, having completed the courtship ritual. Leida is surprised and pleased to see her aunt and they embrace.

Syril's Hopeful Pursuit

Syril Karn is on Coruscant, conversing with Sergeant Linus Mosk, a former colleague from Preox-Morlana, via video call. Karn's mother, Eedy Karn, is watching in the background. Mosk, who is on duty on Morlana One, brings news that Andor's mother, Maarva, has died. He believes Andor might appear at the funeral. Karn wants more details, but the transmission ends. Eedy makes a sarcastic remark about her son's previous triumph being undone.

Difficult Decisions

On Niamos, Andor retrieves a case from a hotel room containing a blaster and Nemik's manifesto while a Blutopian and another alien sleep. Meanwhile, on Segra Milo, Luthen Rael approaches Saw Gerrera's base. Two Tubes instructs the sentries to search him. Rael insists on keeping his blaster. He finds Gerrera willing to support Anto Kreegyr's group in the raid on Spellhaus on his own terms. Rael warns Gerrera that the ISB is aware of Kreegyr's plan and advises him not to participate in the raid.

When Gerrera asks Rael about his source, he refuses to disclose it. Gerrera realizes that Kreegyr is unaware of the trap and asks Rael how he knows he won't tell him. Gerrera is shocked that Rael is willing to sacrifice Kreegyr. He asks if Rael is working for the ISB or if he is protecting someone on the inside. Rael is evasive and says he is a good listener. Rael admits he is willing to sacrifice Kreegyr, which prompts Gerrera to ask if he can trust him. Rael says his contact with Kreegyr is minimal and limited to passing supplies.

Rael tells Gerrera that he can make the decision to warn Kreegyr. He warns that warning Kreegyr will mean throwing away a source they have spent years cultivating. Saw says Rael has people everywhere and asks if he has spies within the ISB or his Partisans. Rael tells Gerrera to consider his choices but Gerrera demands to know who the spy is. Rael claims that the spy is Tubes, who protests his innocence. Tubes charges at Rael and Gerrera but Rael grabs his blaster and points it at Gerrera.

Tubes backs away and Gerrera demands to know what game Rael is playing. Rael tells Gerrera to sacrifice Kreegyr in order to mislead the ISB into thinking that they are invincible. This will give the rebels a clear playing field. Warning Kreegyr will lead the ISB to be more vigilant about spies within their ranks. Rael says that if he were working for the ISB he would have allowed Gerrera to walk into a trap. Gerrera reluctantly agrees to sacrifice Kreegyr for the war.

Rael's Evasion

On Coruscant, Karn unlocks the safe and retrieves something. Later, Rael updates Marki about his successful sale with Gerrera. Marki advises him to come home and tells him that they are involved in intricate negotiations about the sale of a valuable object. She believes his presence will aid their negotiations. Rael says that they need their piece and without it they would have to close the shop. Marki replies that it is a crowded market, prompting Rael to warn her about the consequences of losing that piece to another collector. Marki replies she is preparing for every outcome.

However, Rael ends the transmission because an Imperial ship from the Segra-Milo Imperial patrol is approaching. They ask Rael's Fondor Haulcraft for identification. The ship's droid transmits an Alderaanian transponder ID and identifies the pursuing ship as a Cantwell-class Arrestor Cruiser. The Imperial captain Elk orders his ship's tractor beam projector to haul Rael's haulcraft. He also orders his crew to prepare a boarding party. Rael gets the Fondor droid to prepare the ship's engines for escape.

After he breaks away, Rael gets the Fondor Droid to fire the ship's countermeasures, which consists of projectiles that damage the main disc of the Imperial cruiser. The captain is shocked while a naval crew reports that the tractor beam is failing. The captain dispatches a flight of TIE fighters and a TIE Boarding Craft after Rael's haulcraft. Rael destroys two fighters with laser cannons before destroying the two remaining ones with a laser ray. The Fondor droid completes the hyperspace calculation and jumps into hyperspace, leaving the Imperials behind.

Sorrow and Parting

On Niamos, Andor contacts Xanwan and tells him to tell Maarva that he is okay. Xanwan tells Andor that his mother is dead. Andor is devastated by the news and stands in silence at the transmitter on the resort world. He speaks with Melshi but claims everything is okay. Melshi asks how many of them made it out alive and is determined to tell their story. He proposes that they split up in order to improve their chances of survival. Andor passes Melshi a blaster before shaking hands and patting him on the shoulder. Andor watches the ocean waves and the setting sun in sadness.
