Galactic Alliance Intelligence Service
The Galactic Alliance Intelligence Service (GAIS), also referred to as GA Intelligence or simply the Intelligence Service, functioned as the primary intelligence organization for the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances. Originating from its predecessor under the New Republic, specifically the New Republic Intelligence Service, this service was dedicated to safeguarding the Galactic Alliance from potential dangers by supplying crucial intelligence and analysis on diverse entities, individuals, and evolving situations.
Overview
As the foremost agency within the intelligence community of the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances, the Galactic Alliance Intelligence Service furnished the Galactic Alliance government with vital data pertaining to various scenarios and individuals or groups posing threats. Oversight of the Intelligence Service's operations was conducted by the Galactic Alliance Senate's Security and Intelligence Council. The Director of Galactic Alliance Intelligence headed the Intelligence Service, reporting directly to the Chief of State. The Director of Intelligence concurrently held the position of Head of Galactic Alliance Security.
GA Intelligence officers underwent training in areas like interrogation, analytical skills, and surveillance techniques, possessing the authority to make arrests. This conferred upon them a dual role encompassing intelligence gathering and security officer duties for the Galactic Alliance. Although distinct from the Galactic Alliance Defense Force, the Intelligence Service adopted military ranks such as Captain and Lieutenant.
The Intelligence Service collaborated closely with other security services, notably its military intelligence counterpart, Galactic Alliance Fleet Intelligence.
History
Beginnings

The establishment of the Galactic Alliance Intelligence Service occurred in 28 ABY, following the dissolution of the New Republic during the Yuuzhan Vong War and its subsequent transformation into the Galactic Alliance. Under the guidance of Dif Scaur, the then Director of New Republic Intelligence, the Intelligence Service inherited and continued the operations of its antecedent, the New Republic Intelligence Service (NRI). The early days of the service were marked by the controversial deployment of an experimental chemical weapon known as Alpha Red. This chemical toxin, engineered by a clandestine NRI unit (bearing the same name as the toxin), was designed to target the biological makeup of all living organisms associated with the Yuuzhan Vong.
In 29 ABY, Chief of State Cal Omas authorized the Intelligence Service to release the toxin on Caluula, a planet seized by the Vong, with GAIS agent Wraw monitoring the results. While the toxin effectively eradicated the Vong, it also proved lethal to the planet's natural ecosystem, despite assurances from Director Scaur and Alpha Red scientists. This incident nearly jeopardized the galaxy and led to the permanent termination of the project.
The Intelligence Service persisted in providing intelligence and analysis on Vong movements and the situation on Coruscant, which had been captured by the Vong two years prior. This information aided Galactic Alliance forces and their allies in their eventual assault and recapture of Coruscant, compelling the Vong to surrender and bringing the war to a close. Shortly after this victory, Chief of State Omas compelled Scaur to retire prematurely, and Belindi Kalenda succeeded him as Director of GA Intelligence.
Prior to the Swarm War in 36 ABY, Galactic Alliance worlds faced a surge in piracy involving the smuggling of an addictive strain of Black Membrosia. Subsequent captures of these pirates led the Intelligence Service to identify the Killik Colony in the Utegetu Nebula as a safe haven for these criminals. Princess Leia Organa Solo later presented these findings to UnuThul, who refuted her claims.
Renewed conflicts
In 40 ABY, tensions escalated between the Galactic Alliance and the Five Worlds, notably Corellia. A key point of contention was Corellia's refusal to meet tax obligations and provide troops for the Galactic Alliance Defense Force, opting instead to rely on their own planetary military. The Galactic Alliance discovered that Corellia was secretly expanding its fleet beyond the permitted limit for member planets. Moreover, under the leadership of Thrackan Sal-Solo, Corellia initiated efforts to reactivate Centerpoint Station, a move deemed unacceptable by the Galactic Alliance government. As military intervention seemed imminent, the Intelligence Service was instructed to detain individuals with questionable loyalty. Captain Elsen Barthis and Lieutenant Titch were tasked with extracting Wedge Antilles from Corellia and holding him on Coruscant. However, Antilles managed to outsmart Lieutenant Titch and escape his confinement after only a few days.
As the Blockade of Corellia and minor clashes edged closer to full-scale war, terrorist attacks on Coruscant intensified friction between Coruscanti residents and Corellians living on Coruscant. The Anti-Terrorism Unit of the Coruscant Security Force (CSF) primarily investigated these acts of terrorism, rather than the Intelligence Service. However, the Galactic Alliance government believed that eliminating all pro-Corellians on Coruscant was the only way to completely quell the threat. Seeking a solution that would not compromise public opinion, the Galactic Alliance government identified the need for an intermediary force between civilian police and the military. Consequently, Chief of State Cal Omas, in conjunction with Senator G'vli G'Sil of the Galactic Alliance Senate Security and Intelligence Council, established the Galactic Alliance Guard under the command of Jacen Solo, who was promoted to the rank of Colonel.
The initial ranks of the GAG were largely composed of soldiers from the 967 Commando unit of the Galactic Alliance Special Forces and police officers from the CSF's Anti-Terrorism Unit, including Solo's second-in-command, Captain Lon Shevu. However, some members of the Intelligence Service, notably Captain Heol Girdun, were also transferred to the GAG. Furthermore, the GAG was granted access to the Intelligence Service's databases. As a secret police force, they conducted raids and counter-intelligence operations against pro-Corellians, detaining and subsequently deporting them. Conflicts arose between GAG members from the CSF and those from the Intelligence Service, with the intelligence agents employing more brutal and hands-on interrogation methods than the former police officers.
Civil war
As the conflict between the Galactic Alliance and Corellia escalated into the Second Galactic Civil War, the Intelligence Service collaborated with Fleet Intelligence and the GAG to gather information on Corellia and its allies, who later formed the Confederation. The Intelligence Service also addressed rumors implicating them in the assassination of Thrackan Sal-Solo and several Bothans belonging to the True Victory Party, although both accusations were unfounded.

During the initial phase of open warfare, Belindi Kalenda briefed Admiral Cha Niathal and Jacen Solo on a meeting organized by Corellian separatists, instigated by the Bothan faction, to elect a new supreme commander. Recognizing the strategic value of disrupting this meeting and capturing or eliminating the attendees, Niathal instructed Kalenda to allocate all necessary resources to gather intelligence on the meeting, which ultimately led to the Battle of Gilatter VIII.
As the war progressed, Jacen Solo, who had succumbed to the Dark side of the Force and become Darth Caedus, orchestrated a coup against Cal Omas in collaboration with Admiral Niathal. As part of this plan, the GAG assumed responsibility for Omas's protection from the CSF. However, Omas attempted to negotiate a peace agreement with Confederation leader Dur Gejjen through a clandestine meeting, choosing to bring two Intelligence Service agents with him instead of his GAG detail, believing in their loyalty and trustworthiness. Following the arrest of Cal Omas, the Intelligence Service's influence waned, as they were perceived as supporters of Omas's regime.
Later, Director Kalenda informed Cha Niathal, now the interim co-Chief of State, that scientist and intelligence operative Doctor Toval Seyah had been removed from Centerpoint after being suspected of espionage by the Corellians. This decision led Caedus to view Kalenda as incompetent and Seyah as a traitor, prompting him to order the spy's arrest.
Political changes
Near the conclusion of the war in 41 ABY, control of the Intelligence Service was transferred to the Galactic Alliance Guard, with Captain Heol Girdun replacing Kalenda as Director of Intelligence. However, Caedus was soon killed, bringing the war to an end. Following his death, the GAG was disbanded, and Belindi Kalenda was reinstated as the head of the Intelligence Service. Her tenure was short-lived, however. With the war concluded, Natasi Daala was elected as Chief of State and initiated a purge of individuals who had not opposed Caedus's reign. Kalenda fell victim to this wave of dismissals, and Daala appointed General Borath Maddeus as the new Director of Intelligence. It was also at this time that a new security force, Galactic Alliance Security, was established, separating the intelligence and law enforcement functions previously performed by the Intelligence Service. Nevertheless, the Director of Intelligence also served as the head of Galactic Alliance Security, ensuring that Maddeus retained control over both agencies.
In 44 ABY, Maddeus became secretly involved in the Lecersen Conspiracy. Fearing exposure by captured co-conspirators, Maddeus attempted to silence the remaining members. He also tasked veteran intelligence operative Garik Loran with unofficially re-establishing Wraith Squadron to investigate and dismantle General Stavin Thaal, another member of the conspiracy. Unfortunately for Maddeus, Wraith Squadron uncovered his plans, leading to his exposure and arrest. In the aftermath, Chief of State Wynn Dorvan appointed Loran as Head of Galactic Alliance Security and Director of Intelligence. One of Loran's first acts was to officially integrate Wraith Squadron into the Intelligence Service.
The Intelligence Service continued to provide critical information throughout the Sith–Imperial War. Following the Galactic Alliance's surrender to the Fel Empire in 130 ABY, the majority of the Galactic Alliance government was absorbed into the new Empire. However, some Intelligence agents remained with the Galactic Alliance Core Fleet, operating as Covert Agents for the Galactic Alliance Remnant during the Second Imperial Civil War.
