Dreadnought-class heavy cruiser

The Dreadnought-class heavy cruiser, also designated as the Imperial Support Vessel, Dreadnought Support Vessel, or Rendili Dreadnought—with alternate spellings including Dreadnaught-class heavy cruiser or Rendili Dreadnaught—represented a formidable, medium-sized capital ship produced by Rendili StarDrive. This warship was engineered for intense space combat scenarios and planetary subjugation, equipped with a significant array of turbolasers and heavy laser cannons. Notable for its substantially armored hull and limited shielding, this heavy cruiser could accommodate an entire starfighter squadron within a dedicated hangar.

Previously employed by the Utapaun Security Forces for anti-pirate operations, and by the Republic Navy in their struggle against the Separatists during the Clone Wars, the Dreadnought maintained its reputation as a highly competent ship of its size and type even during the time of the Galactic Empire. In the year 2 BBY, a faction of insurgents hailing from Batonn deployed a number of Dreadnought-class ships in a failed revolt. Subsequently, numerous heavy cruisers formed part of Grand Admiral Thrawn's Imperial blockade above Lothal in 1 BBY. This blockade persisted until the liberation of Lothal from Imperial control, at which point all Imperial vessels present were annihilated by a group of space-traveling purrgil entities.

The Dreadnought-class heavy cruiser also saw action with the Rebel Alliance in their struggle against the Empire. Many former Imperial Support Vessels, deemed too costly to repair by the Empire and left to decay, were salvaged and refitted for service in the Alliance Fleet. In 4 ABY, the rebels utilized a stolen Imperial Support Vessel, 49AX3, to transport soldiers for a raid on an Imperial refinery in the Outer Rim, securing the installation's fuel resources for the rebel fleet.

Characteristics

The Imperial Support Vessel was equipped with twelve sublight engines.

The Dreadnought-class heavy cruiser, alternatively known as the Imperial Support Vessel, Dreadnought Support Vessel, or Rendili Dreadnought, represented a medium-sized capital ship class featuring an oblong design, manufactured by Rendili StarDrive. With alternate spellings such as Dreadnaught-class heavy cruiser or Rendili Dreadnaught, the heavy cruiser exhibited a gray, heavily armored hull, complemented by several elliptical or rectangular protrusions situated amidship. Despite being equipped with minimal deflector shields, this starship could withstand substantial damage, further reinforced by hull redundancies that prevented atmosphere from escaping into space during combat. While the exterior of this customizable vessel presented a clamshell-like or rectangular bow, the interior featured a bridge and viewports along the bow and sides.

The Dreadnought-class was a powerful and versatile warship.

The Dreadnought-class incorporated multiple launch bays and possessed the capacity to carry shuttles alongside a single squadron of twelve starfighters within a dedicated hangar. Its propulsion system included twelve sublight engines of varying configurations, rendering it one of the swiftest vessels of its class at sublight velocities. The craft also featured a primary hyperdrive rated at Class 4, with backup systems at Class 18 and Class 2. Depending on the specific configuration, the Dreadnought cruiser could accommodate between 9,000 and 16,000 officers, pilots, and enlisted crew, in addition to 3,000 troops. The vessel carried sufficient consumables to sustain its crew for one year, and was marketed at a price of 7,200,000 credits.

Designed to support a range of weapon configurations, the versatile and powerful Dreadnought boasted a significant number of turbolasers, including five forward and five aft twin medium turbolaser batteries, alongside ten port and ten starboard quad light turbolasers. The warship was also outfitted with five port and five starboard heavy laser cannons for anti-starfighter defense, a navicomputer, and medium-range sensors, including a dorsal sensor dish located near the vessel's stern. Furthermore, the Dreadnought-class heavy cruisers utilized by the Batonn insurgents displayed distinctive red hull markings, a characteristic shared by other insurgent starships.

Role

The Dreadnought-class cruiser was made for heavy space combat.

The Dreadnought-class heavy cruisers, engineered for intense space combat and planetary occupation, were commonly used for cargo transport and diverse missions unsuitable for larger vessels. Commanders of the Dreadnought sought to position this substantial vessel to unleash broadsides upon adversaries, aiming to secure combat superiority. Firing the ship's turbolasers and heavy laser cannons in groups of at least three would also increase the probability of hitting smaller and faster enemy starfighters and gunboats. To counteract attacks from enemy bombers, the cruiser deployed its fighters, providing them with covering fire.

The Dreadnought-class served as a versatile workhorse for the navies of both the Galactic Empire and its opposition, the Rebel Alliance, fulfilling a variety of roles. While the Imperial Navy employed these vessels to safeguard its territories and stations, the Dreadnought functioned as a mobile operational base for the battle groups of the latter faction.

History

Era of the Republic

The Carrack-class light cruisers (pictured) served as escorts for the Dreadnoughts in the Republic Navy.

The Dreadnought-class heavy cruiser, once a prevalent sight throughout the galaxy, was considered an older, somewhat outdated design by the outbreak of the pan-galactic Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems in 22 BBY. The Republic Navy deployed Dreadnought-class ships during the war, often escorted by smaller Carrack-class light cruisers. One such Republic Dreadnought, the Mas Ramdar, along with three Carrack-class cruisers, formed Home Fleet Strike Group Five, a component of the Coruscant Home Fleet tasked with defending the Republic's capital world of Coruscant.

Under the command of Lieutenant Commander Lorth Needa, Strike Group Five participated in the Battle of Coruscant in 19 BBY. During this engagement, the group cornered the Separatist General Grievous' flagship, the Invisible Hand, which carried the Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine, leader of the Republic, as a captive. However, Needa, unconvinced that Palpatine was aboard the ship, demanded Grievous' surrender and granted him ten minutes to substantiate his claims before the strike group opened fire. Grievous did not surrender, but Jedi Generals Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker successfully rescued the Chancellor.

Around this time, the defense forces of Utapau, known as the Utapaun Security Forces, utilized scaled-down vessels such as the Rendili Dreadnoughts for anti-pirate operations. Their largest Dreadnought was one-fifth the size of a Lucrehulk-class battleship, a circular vessel with a diameter of 3,170 meters (10,400 feet). Later, following the conclusion of the war ended and the Republic's transformed into the Empire in 19 BBY, a Dreadnought bearing Republic markings, sustained damage and emerged from hyperspace near an abandoned Republic supply depot. Transmitting a distress call to any Republic forces, the vessel carried young clone troopers who were unaware of the Galactic Empire's existence.

Batonn insurgency

During the Imperial Era, a Dreadnought cruiser was observed near an Imperial hangar bay housing a YT-2000 light freighter. In 2 BBY, a group of insurgents led by smuggler Nevil Cygni on Batonn deployed Dreadnought Support Vessels in battle against the Empire. Several of these vessels were part of insurgent attack squadrons that confronted Admiral Thrawn's naval forces orbiting Batonn during the siege of the Creekpath Mining and Refining complex. Despite targeting Thrawn's Arquitens-class light cruisers, the insurgents were defeated by Imperial forces. The majority of the rebel forces were destroyed by Imperial TIE fighters and Thrawn's flagship, the Imperial Star Destroyer Chimaera, due to Thrawn's anticipation of Cygni's strategy.

Galactic Civil War

In service of both sides

The Dreadnought-class heavy cruiser saw service with both the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance during the Galactic Civil War. While still considered a capable ship of its class and size at that time, the Dreadnought became increasingly scarce during the conflict, with combat stress, accidents, or simple wear causing deterioration, exacerbated by a scarcity of replacement parts.

The Assault Frigate Mark II series (pictured) was derived from the old Dreadnought-class.

Given its large crew requirement and outdated systems, the Empire deemed Dreadnoughts not worth the cost of repair, leaving damaged vessels abandoned in shipyards or in orbit. Conversely, many former Imperial Support Vessels were salvaged, refitted, and integrated into the rebel fleet, as rebel commanders heavily relied on fighter tactics, and the Dreadnought-class could accommodate an entire squadron of starfighters—a highly desirable attribute for the Alliance.

The extensive modifications made to the Dreadnought-class by the early Rebel Alliance also led to the development of another series of capital ships known as the Assault Frigate Mark II. With significant alterations or removals of the original structure, bearing little resemblance to the original Dreadnought, this resulted in reduced personnel requirements and improved maneuverability and speed, while maintaining its armament.

Mystery of the Enigma and Imperial blockade of Lothal

Originally commissioned during the time of the Old Republic, the Enigma was an aging Dreadnought-class cruiser deployed by the Alliance Fleet. Rumored to be haunted, the ship experienced power fluctuations, unexplained breakages or disappearances of new parts, and even the vanishing of crew members. While these incidents could have been caused by an Imperial saboteur, some crew members believed the ship to be cursed, claiming to have witnessed ghosts within its corridors.

The Imperial Support Vessel was among the starship classes forming part of Grand Admiral Thrawn's Seventh Fleet during its blockade of Lothal amidst ongoing conflict with local rebel forces. Ultimately, the blockade failed to contain the rebel presence on Lothal. After the rebel light freighter Ghost infiltrated the blockade by attaching itself to a passing cargo freighter in 1 BBY, the Lothal resistance, led by Jedi Padawan Ezra Bridger, launched a final assault on Imperial forces and liberated Lothal. During this engagement, the entire blockade, including numerous Imperial Support Vessels, was destroyed by a pod of purrgil—massive, whale-like creatures capable of natural hyperspace travel—as part of Bridger's strategy.

Raid at Imperial Refining Platform M36

In 4 ABY, a team of Rebel Alliance soldiers led by a Pau'an major conducted a raid on Imperial Refining Platform M36 in the Outer Rim Territories, utilizing the stolen Imperial Support Vessel 49AX3 as a troop transport. With assistance from Jedi Commander Luke Skywalker and his T-65B X-wing starfighter, the rebels seized the refinery's fuel supplies for their fleet, but their escape was impeded by an Imperial II-class Star Destroyer after the Pau'an refused to enter hyperspace through the surrounding asteroid field.

Concurrently, far from the refinery, Sith Lord and Galactic Emperor Palpatine showed Skywalker a vision through the Force, depicting the destruction of the rebels' Dreadnought, hoping to undermine the Jedi's commitment to the Rebellion. Skywalker, however, broke free from the Emperor's vision and landed his X-wing in the Imperial Support Vessel's hangar after destroying several attacking Imperial TIE fighters. He and the major then utilized the latter's private shuttle to divert the remaining TIEs. This tactic succeeded, allowing the rebels aboard 49AX3 to escape to a nearby world.

Behind the scenes

Reintroduction into Star Wars canon

Concept art of the Imperial Support Vessel by Andre Kirk

The Dreadnaught-class heavy cruiser was first mentioned within current Star Wars canon in the fifty-second issue of the Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon magazine, published by De Agostini around December 30, 2015. The ship model later received its initial depiction via the Two-Player Game expansion for the Star Wars: Destiny collectible dice and card game, utilizing repurposed artwork from the 2014 Star Wars Legends roleplaying game book Star Wars: Age of Rebellion Core Rulebook by artist Adam Lane. The Star Wars: Destiny card depicting the ship, titled "Hangar Bay—Imperial Fleet," was unveiled on Fantasy Flight Games' official website on August 31, 2017, one day prior to the product's release.

The Dreadnought-class made its debut appearance as a background ship in "A Fool's Hope," the penultimate episode of the final season of the Star Wars Rebels animated series, which initially aired on March 5, 2018. The cruiser's colloquial name, Imperial Support Vessel, was revealed through a concept art illustration by Andre Kirk in the accompanying "A Fool's Hope" episode guide on StarWars.com.

The designs for the Imperial Support Vessel seen in the episode were derived from the Imperial Dreadnaught, which figured prominently in The Thrawn Trilogy, a Legends novel series written by Timothy Zahn. While the Dreadnaught first appeared in the trilogy's second entry, 1992's Dark Force Rising, the ship originated in the 1989 Imperial Sourcebook, authored by Greg Gorden and published by West End Games for Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game. Both the craft's new Star Wars Rebels design and old Legends appearance continued to be used to depict the vehicle in canon media.

Alternate naming and inconsistencies

The Dreadnaught-class debuted in West End Games' Imperial Sourcebook.

The reference work Star Wars: Complete Vehicles, published in 2018, originally designated the ship as the Rendili Dreadnaught. In the 2020 edition of the book, titled Star Wars Complete Vehicles, New Edition, the text retained the original name and spelling; however, the ship's index entry was altered to read "Rendili Dreadnought." Furthermore, the 2019 reference book Ultimate Star Wars, New Edition presented the model of the vehicle as "Dreadnought-class," utilizing the updated spelling. In contrast to other sources, this book does not capitalize the common name, instead using "Imperial support vessel." In addition, the episode "Every Type of Ship in Star Wars Rebels," which appeared on StarWarsKids.com as part of the Star Wars By the Numbers web series on October 31, 2019, referred to the ship as "Dreadnought Support Vessel." The 2020 roleplaying game sourcebook Starships and Speeders by Fantasy Flight Games gave the complete technical designation of the vehicle as "Dreadnought-class heavy cruiser," maintaining the same spelling for "Dreadnought."

While Ultimate Star Wars, New Edition initially indicated that the Dreadnought-class possessed a Class 2 hyperdrive, Starships and Speeders subsequently specified that the ship featured a primary hyperdrive rating of Class 4, accompanied by a backup hyperdrive rating of Class 18. The more recent source is taken to be the correct one for this article. The 2020 publication The Art of Star Wars Rebels also incorrectly labels the ship as a light cruiser.
