Silvo's pirates

Silvo's pirate band, a diverse group of species following the Pirate's Code, sailed the stars during the New Republic Era. Their livelihood came from raiding cargo ships, operating from their imposing pirate frigate, and occasionally making port at the pirate-infested asteroid of Borgo Prime. Around the year 9 ABY, a brief insurrection dethroned Silvo, with Brutus taking his place. During this time, they were known as Brutus's pirate crew or Captain Brutus' crew. Silvo, after killing the mutinous Brutus, regained control and led his pirates in the Invasion of At Attin, a secluded world that housed an Old Republic credit mint. Their scheme to exploit the planet's credit production was foiled by a New Republic squadron, alerted by the young members of the Skeleton Crew.

Following a failed raid targeting a merchant freighter, Silvo's crew rebelled. After escaping from prison, he enlisted the help of the Skeleton Crew—a group of young At Attin locals—to find Captain Tak Rennod's datalog and the planet's coordinates. Though recaptured, Silvo postponed his death sentence by sharing his findings with his former crew. Capitalizing on an opportunity, he won back the pirates' loyalty by eliminating Brutus. Once again captain, Silvo bypassed At Attin's protective Barrier by sneaking aboard the Onyx Cinder, the Skeleton Crew's ship. Disguised as a Galactic Republic emissary, he infiltrated the planet and disabled "the Supervisor," who oversaw the credit minting process, allowing his crew to invade. While Gunter commanded the pirate frigate, Silvo directed the attack from the Supervisor's Tower. However, the Skeleton Crew contacted Kh'ymm, an astronomer who summoned a New Republic squadron. Silvo's conquest ended when his frigate was bombarded and sent careening into a water canal.

Description

A Pirate Snub Fighter, with the pirate frigate in the background

The pirates led by Silvo, also referred to as Brutus's pirate crew or the crew of Captain Brutus, were a band of space-faring pirates who used Silvo's pirate frigate as their base of operations. The crew was made up of beings of various species and genders. Despite their individual aims, they shared a common goal: amassing wealth by acquiring credits. To achieve this, they attacked other starships, seizing their cargo and dividing the spoils. The pirates occasionally visited Borgo Prime, a starport known for its pirate and underworld activity, which at least one captain within Silvo's ranks considered his personal domain.

The crew was under the command of a single captain, assisted by a First Mate who served as their second-in-command. Pirates addressed their captain as "captain" or "sir." A captain could be overthrown through a "mutiny," where crew members rebelled to install a new leader. The deposed captain could be detained pending a trial. During trials, the captain acted as a judge, seated on a throne-like chair, and had the power to issue a death sentence, which another crew member would oversee. Bound by the rules of the Pirate's Code, Silvo's pirates upheld equal time and the Right of Last Appeal, which allowed the accused to deliver a speech for as long as a special plasma hourglass continued to measure time. A crew member could also become captain by killing the current one and regaining the trust of the rest of the crew.

The captain's seat aboard the frigate

Personal rivalries and alliances were also present among the pirates. While Brutus sought to embarrass Silvo, Silvo had a good relationship with Chaelt, whom he knew well.

Operating from a large frigate, the pirates captured other starships using drill-like boarding tubes that pierced the target ship's hull. Waves of attackers would then enter the ship, with the first waves facing the greatest danger. The captain would eventually enter the ship. The pirates also used at least two types of armed transports—a larger and a smaller one—to travel to other worlds and Pirate Snub Fighters to explore nebulas. They also used pirate dropships to deploy assault teams during planetary invasions. Given that their frigate had an airlock, the crew used airlocking as a form of punishment, ejecting individuals—whether former captains or enemies—out of the airlock.

History

Empty vault, full mutiny

The mutiny against Silvo

Silvo's pirates were active during the New Republic Era. The crew was established around 9 ABY, at which point the Nikto Vane joined after Gorian Shard's pirate crew disbanded during the siege on Nevarro. Around 9 ABY, the pirates were led by Captain Silvo, a Force-sensitive human, with the Shistavanen Brutus as his First Mate. Silvo realized that some of his crew were questioning his leadership. To reassert his authority, he launched a raid on a merchant freighter, believing it carried a valuable cargo of credits. The pirates attacked from their frigate, using drill-like boarding tubes to pierce the freighter's hull. As the boarding team fought the defending merchants, pirates in spacesuits disabled the freighter's cannons from space. Brutus boarded the ship, gunning down the remaining survivors to clear the path for Silvo. He informed Silvo that the ship now belonged to him. Silvo, wearing a helmet, boarded the vessel with Chaelt and Gunter. With the enemy defeated, the pirates gathered by the magnetically sealed vault. When the merchant captain refused to cooperate, Silvo had him ejected from the airlock. As the vault door was opened, Silvo boasted about leading them to "cold, hard credits" despite his previous failures. However, the vault contained only a single credit. Brutus pushed past the others to see the coin for himself, lamenting the loss of pirate lives. As several crew members aimed their weapons at Silvo, he suspected mutiny and launched a counteroffensive. While many pirates joined the rebellion, some—like Chaelt and Gunter—did not. Silvo's defense ultimately failed, and Brutus became the new leader, with the crew becoming known as "Brutus's pirate crew" or "Captain Brutus' crew."

Skirmish on Borgo Prime

Captain Brutus and his pirate underlings—Gunter, Vane, Pax, and Chaelt

With Brutus as the new captain, Gunter became the First Mate. When the pirates arrived on Borgo Prime—a starport that Brutus claimed as his own—they separated and pursued their own interests. An Ishi Tib had a cybernetic implant welded into his injured eyestack to compensate for the loss he suffered during the raid, while Beef sharpened his knife at a local kiosk. Vane lingered around a local noodle bar, and a Warthog pirate strolled along the docking area with an eyestalked companion. The Warthog passed a group of four younglings from the Skeleton Crew—Fern, KB, Neel, and Wim. It was their first time venturing off their home planet, and the children remarked on the strange appearance of these aliens. Later, the younglings approached a dance club, where Beef noticed them as they decided to look elsewhere.

Neel and Wim stopped by the noodle bar, attempting to pay with Old Republic credits. As the fry cook tried to trick the younglings into leaving a tip, Vane approached to examine the coin. The boys claimed to be from the legendary world of At Attin, known in pirate lore as the "planet of eternal treasure." Initially skeptical, Vane pursued the youngsters after Wim flipped his bowl into the grill to create a distraction. When Vane caught up with the Skeleton Crew, he nearly forced them to surrender by disarming Fern. However, the pirate droid SM-33, who considered Fern its captain, defended the young travelers. During the fight, Vane was pushed back, and the Warthog alien, who led a barrage of blaster shots, had his snout burned by SM-33's arm shield, red-hot from the impact. After escaping the pirates and thugs, the Skeleton Crew reached the docking area and was about to board a space dinghy when a shot from Brutus's ion rifle disabled their droid. Surrounded by his pirate underlings—including Gunter, Vane, Pax, and Chaelt—Brutus approached the children, wondering how they had obtained the coordinates to his port and how they had bypassed their cannons. He ordered the younglings locked down in a brig for interrogation.

Ex-captain at large

Brutus and his First Mate Gunter at Starport Borgo

Silvo, a former member of his old crew, shared a brig with the Skeleton Crew younglings. Using his Force-sensitivity, he escaped and boarded the Skeleton Crew's starship. The younglings convinced him to return for SM-33, who remained in a droid repair shop. Meanwhile, Brutus's pirate crew realized that Silvo had escaped. As Beef urged everyone to report suspicious activity, Silvo snuck behind him on his way to his destination. Upon finding SM-33, Silvo encountered the Ishi Tib Benjar Pranic. Benjar was surprised to see Silvo free before his trial, and Silvo explained that he had escaped. During their conversation, Benjar remarked that Silvo had been a better leader than Brutus. However, as Silvo was about to leave, Benjar announced that he would report the encounter to the new captain.

As Silvo piloted a dinghy back to the starship, a Quarren pirate gave chase, but Silvo managed to evade them before docking. However, he found the vessel tethered by a reinforced fuel line that he could not break. Watching from the landing platform, Brutus ordered his crew to open fire with laser cannons. To evade the blasts, Silvo and the Skeleton Crew younglings jumped into hyperspace. The sudden maneuver snapped the fuel line, sending it recoiling into one of the asteroid's platforms as the ship narrowly escaped destruction. Brutus and several of his crew—including Beef and the Ishi Tib with a prosthetic eye—watched as a scaffolding collapsed in front of them. When Gunter asked if he should pursue the runaways, Brutus instead ordered him to put a bounty on Silvo's head, wanting him to grovel at his feet.

Silvo's hunt for At Attin

Kh'ymm's guidance helped establish the coordinates to what he believed was At Attin.

Silvo, now a member of the Skeleton Crew, led them to the Observatory Moon to seek advice from his friend Kh'ymm, an avian astronomer. Kh'ymm told the crew about the Jewels of the Old Republic, planets dedicated to minting credits for the Old Republic. These worlds were hidden from the rest of the galaxy and did not appear on any charts. However, by analyzing clues from the younglings, Kh'ymm located a planet matching their descriptions. Concerned about the children's safety and their involvement with Silvo, the astronomer alerted a New Republic unit. Upon returning to their ship, the Skeleton Crew evaded the New Republic forces, who remained cautious due to the presence of children.

Upon reaching their destination and landing on the planet, the Skeleton Crew realized they were not on At Attin. Instead, they had arrived on At Achrann, a former Jewel of the Old Republic now ravaged by a military conflict between the Troiks and the Hattans. In the Fallen Sanctum, the crew discovered coordinates leading to other Jewels of the Old Republic, but those for At Attin were indecipherable. After leaving At Achrann, the crew overrode SM-33's memory circuit, revealing that the droid had once belonged to the pirate Captain Tak Rennod. Rennod, infamous for his bestiality, was remembered for plundering multiple starships and was known as the most feared pirate of all time. According to Silvo, Rennod had been searching for the treasure of At Attin when he and his crew mysteriously vanished. Moreover, the ship the younglings had found on At Attin—and were now travelling aboard with Silvo—was Rennod's vessel, the Onyx Cinder, suggesting that the captain had reached At Attin and crashed on its surface. Guided by SM-33, the Skeleton Crew set course for Lanupa, home to Captain Rennod's Lair, hoping to access his datalog and uncover the true coordinates to At Attin.

Pokkit's tip and and invasion on a hotel

Pokkit contacts Brutus to report on Silvo's whereabouts.

Upon reaching Lanupa, the Skeleton Crew discovered that Skull Ridge Mountain—the location of Captain Rennod's Lair—had been transformed into Skull Ridge Mountain Hotel & Spa. To infiltrate Rennod's hideout, Silvo bribed the hotelier and assumed the identity of Professor Umiam Gorelox, while his young companions posed as the "Most Wise Elders." While checking in, Silvo was spotted by the bounty hunter Pokkit. Suspecting she might alert Brutus to his presence, he attempted to warn the Skeleton Crew younglings about an approaching crew of murderous pirates. However, they were too preoccupied with a pillow fight to take the threat seriously. When questioned about why the crew was mad at him and why Pokkit hated him, Silvo dismissed their inquiries as idiotic.

The Skeleton Crew split into two teams to search for the lair. Meanwhile, Pokkit contacted Brutus to claim her bounty and transmitted the coordinates to Lanupa. In response, Brutus informed her that he would be dispatching two ships to capture the runaway prisoner. As the search continued, Lanupan security guards grew suspicious of "Umiam Gorelox" and began tracking him, forcing the crew to flee. They eventually reached the Mud Pits, where they discovered a hidden well they believed would lead to Rennod's lair. At the same time, two transports—one larger and one smaller—emerged from hyperspace over the planet. As two Lanupan security vessels glided to flank the larger transport, the smaller ship ambushed and destroyed them from behind. With the security forces eliminated, the pirate ships descended onto the spa's landing pad.

Beef, Gunter, and other pirates in the company of Pokkit on security officers

When the pirates launched their attack, the Lanupan security guards—who were pursuing Silvo and the children—were instructed to hurry up and capture the fugitive as soon as possible to return to the surface immediately. Meanwhile, a pirate subgroup, including First Mate Gunter and Beef, descended underground. With Pokkit at his side, Gunter gunned down a security grunt. The man, his chest pierced by a blaster bolt, was sucked into a trap and impaled on ceiling-mounted pikes. Other guards, however, had their lives spared and accompanied the pirates during their chase. Gunter screamed Silvo's name as the fugitive reached a chamber filled with toxic acid. When the Skeleton Crew disabled the trap, they descended further, finally reaching the lair. Since SM-33 had gained access to the trap system, Silvo had it refill the chamber with acid. As the liquid poured in, the pirates screamed, with Gunter once again calling out Silvo's name. However, he survived unscathed and. together with Pokitt, soon returned to the surface. In the meantime, Silvo challenged Skeleton Crew Captain Fern under the Pirate's Code. When the girl yielded, SM-33 recognized him as its new captain and—following his orders—attempted to arrest the younglings, who ultimately managed to evade capture by triggering a trap that sent them sliding outside.

Apprehension of Silvo

Beef and a Weequay seize Silvo amid a deactivated SM-33 and a crowd of on-lookers.

As Captain Brutus' crew loitered around the hotel, arresting several security guards, Silvo emerged from an access hatch, adorned in Tak Rennod's jewelry. He moved addressed the hotelier, Bubbles, the bellhops, and various guests, completely unaware of Gunter lurking behind him. The First Mate raised his blaster, taking his former captain at gunpoint. Silvo, caught off guard, attempted to plead his case, but before he could get far, he was seized by Beef and a Weequay.

As Beef and his companion prepared to haul him away per Gunter's orders, Silvo called out to SM-33, instructing it to attack the pirates, despite having only promised to cut them in. His defense plan, however, failed instantly, as the moment the droid emerged through the access hatch, it was disabled by a ion blast. The pirates pressed forward, tightening their grip on Silvo. Just then, Pokkit approached Silvo and put her arm on him, leaving a smooch on his cheek and saying it had been nice to come across him. Suddenly, a New Republic X-wing squadron roared into view. A Quarren crew member spotted them first, quickly warning Gunter. Wasting no time, the First Mate issued the order to retreat to their two transports.

Trial of Silvo

The Trial of Silvo

Upon their return, the pirate crew congregated on the frigate for the trial. Presiding as judge, Captain Brutus occupied a throne-like seat, complete with a plasma hourglass on its arm. Standing beside him were Chaelt and the Keteerian Snobbius Snee. Snee, in charge of the proceedings, announced that Brutus was about to deliver the verdict. Cheers erupted when Captain Silvo was declared guilty and sentenced to death via airlock expulsion. Silvo glanced at Chaelt, who hesitated before finally breaking his silence. A sudden shout from an old woman halted the applause, as she invoked the Pirate's Code, ensuring equal time and the Right of Last Appeal. The crowd quieted as Brutus turned to Snee, who confirmed the appeal had to be granted. Brutus then activated the hourglass, marking the beginning of Silvo's allotted time.

Silvo's initial silence caused all eyes to be on him, with one pirate demanding he "speak up." Instead of addressing his guilt, Silvo changed the subject to the crew's struggles, talking about their hunger and lack of supplies. His words sparked varied responses: one pirate sought clarification, another demanded his execution, and a third dismissed his speech as a desperate maneuver. Silvo then inquired about how long they had endured hunger, surprising the same pirate who had previously told him to speak. As he attempted to continue, Brutus cut him off, asserting that a convict's words held no value. Silvo retorted by pointing to the still-active plasma in the hourglass. Turning his attention back to the crew, he stated that their starvation was due to the constant scarcity of credits. Expanding on this, he urged everyone to envision a place where credits flowed freely, piquing the interest of two pirates. He addressed the Quarren Glerb, suggesting he could purchase an ocean instead of a glow-weed farm. Glerb conceded that "it would be quite something." Silvo then turned to the human Kona, apologizing for letting her down and stating she deserved her own fleet. Skeptical of his words, Kona questioned the catch, but Silvo assured her there was none—only genuine Old Republic credits. He produced a coin and flipped it, capturing the crew's attention. The Nikto Vane examined it and confirmed its resemblance to the credits used by younglings in Starport Borgo. Silvo concurred, adding that Tak Rennod had also believed this. Brutus interrupted, stating that Rennod was deceased. Instead of arguing, Silvo began to sing a shanty about Rennod's fate and his supposed looting of At Attin. The crew joined in, and when they faltered on a verse, Kona promptly provided the missing lyrics, allowing them to complete the song.

Following the song, Gunter asked Silvo if he truly believed the stories about At Attin. Rather than giving a direct answer, Silvo suggested Brutus had been an excellent First Mate and urged the crew to follow him instead, promising them the entire galaxy. As the hourglass emptied, Gunter and Kona grabbed the defendant and escorted him to the judge. Brutus dragged Silvo to the airlock, pressing him against the glass to witness trash being ejected into space. He warned that if At Attin—where he agreed to navigate using Silvo's coordinates—contained no genuine treasure, Silvo would share the trash's fate. Therefore, the execution was delayed until they reached the legendary planet.

Arrival at At Attin

As the pirate frigate exited hyperspace above At Attin, Brutus marched across the bridge toward the viewport. A single look at a green gas giant with flashing lightning bolts convinced him they were nowhere near At Attin and had instead arrived at a toxic maelstrom. After Chaelt, at the navicomputer, confirmed their location, Brutus realized that a maelstrom of that size would destroy any ship attempting to enter it. He then seized a chained Silvo by the arm and pulled him forward, stating that the destination they had reached bore no resemblance to a treasure planet. Consequently, he ordered the airlock to be prepared, deciding that the previously postponed death sentence would be carried out now that At Attin had apparently turned out to be nothing more than a myth. As two pirates moved to seize him, Silvo called Brutus "an idiot" before calling the rest of the crew "fools." He insisted that the gas giant was merely a disguise. Calling on SM-33, he had the droid read Tak Renno's datalog, which described the treasure planet as being hidden within an endless storm. Walking among the crew as they stared at the giant, he wagered his life on At Attin being hidden inside—a bet Brutus accepted. Despite Silvo offering to fly in himself, the captain preferred to send another volunteer.

Leaders and members

Silvo and Brutus served as captains around 9 ABY.

During the New Republic Era, the Shistavanen Brutus was Silvo's First Mate when the human Silvo captained the crew. Conversely, the human cyborg Gunter was Brutus's First Mate when Brutus became captain. Gunter remained in his position after Silvo regained command by killing Brutus. During the Invasion of At Attin, he commanded the frigate while Silvo directed the operation from the planet's surface. At that time, the human Kona and the Nikto Vane led their respective assault teams. Furthermore, the Keteerian Snobbius Snee supervised Silvo's trial under Captain Brutus. Chaelt—a human female—was responsible for operating a navicomputer.

Silvo's pirates were a diverse crew, including several Quarrens, like Glerb, who was saving up to buy his own glow-weed plantation. Other species included Grans (Pax), Ishi Tibs (Benjar Pranic, an Ishi Tib), Klatooinians (a helmeted pirate), Shydopps, Snivvians (a Snivvian pirate), Warthogs (a Warthog alien), as well as Weequays (Sweeda) and other humanoids (Beef). The pirates also briefly employed a pirate droid, SM-33.

Inspiration and development

Jon Watts, the showrunner for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, mentioned classic LucasArts games, particularly Monkey Island, as an inspiration for the show's depiction of pirates. He aimed to combine its adventurous humor with Star Wars's established approach to piracy, creating a new yet familiar dynamic within the franchise. While pirates brought humor, Watts emphasized their role in reinforcing the series' mature themes, despite its young protagonists. He described the show as capturing the spirit of classic Amblin films, where characters face genuine danger—being "fried, blasted, or even eaten." Executive producers Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau were eager to expand this aspect of the universe, ensuring consistency in its portrayal.

Co-creator Christopher Ford highlighted the lawlessness that arose in the galaxy after the fall of the Empire as a setting that provided an opportunity to examine the resurgence of piracy in a post-Imperial era. He also noted that pirates had been a recurring theme throughout Star Wars history, often mentioned in connection to characters like Han Solo and depicted in various animated series. Although time constraints prevented a deeper exploration of pirate backstories, Watts and Ford expressed interest in developing them further. One example of subtle world-building was the dynamic between Silvo and Chaelt, which sparked speculation about a mind trick despite simply being a sign of their close familiarity.

Jaleel White (Gunter), Stephen Oyoung (Brutus), and a performance artist (an Ishi Tib) on set

The series took inspiration from classic pirate archetypes, including pirate movies from the '30s and particularly Treasure Island's Long John Silver, influencing Silvo's characterization as a morally complex figure rather than a straightforward villain, like Captain Hook. His actions throughout the series reflected traditional pirate traits, such as self-interest, opportunism, and deception. The creators intentionally avoided a redemption arc, distinguishing him from typical hero narratives.

Director David Lowery recalled that Watts had pitched Star Wars: Skeleton Crew as a story about "kids lost in the Star Wars universe" with "a bunch of pirates," which immediately appealed to him due to his recent work on a Peter Pan movie. He even drew a parallel between SM-33 and "Smee." Learning that Jude Law—his Peter Pan Captain Hook—would star in the series felt like revisiting his previous project. Visual effect supervisor John Knoll, a veteran of Pirates of the Caribbean, enjoyed incorporating classic pirate tropes—such as boarding tubes and flintlock-style weapons—into the Star Wars setting.
