The Corellian Defense Forces Space Service, alternatively known as the Corellian navy or Corellian fleet, functioned as the naval arm of the Corellian Defense Force. Its primary mission centered around safeguarding the expanse of Corellian space.
Encompassing all space-based military assets, the Corellian Defense Forces Space Service formed an integral part of the Corellian Defense Force (CDF), the entity responsible for protecting the Corellian sector. The fleet's central command was situated within the Orbital Industrial Zone orbiting Corellia.
Leadership of the Space Service, mirroring the CDF's overall structure, rested with the Corellian sector's governing authority, initially the Governor-General of the Corellian sector and subsequently the Five World Prime Minister. From a military perspective, command of the CDF and its Space Service was vested in the Supreme Commander of the Corellian Defense Force.
A particularly noteworthy component of the Corellian Defense Forces Space Service was the Corellian Home Fleet, dedicated to the defense of Corellia itself and the encompassing Corellian system. Corellian naval officers received a Corellian cutlass upon achieving the rank of lieutenant.
The CDF Space Service employed a diverse array of starships, largely produced by the Corellian Engineering Corporation. Among the capital ship classes were corvettes (such as the CR90 corvette and the CR92a Assassin-class corvette), gunships, frigates (including assault frigates), cruiser, Star Defenders (such as the Strident-class Star Defender), battle cruisers, and dreadnaughts. Smaller craft included patrol boats (like the Pocket Patrol Boat) and transports (such as the CR-20 troop carrier). Starfighter designs comprised the Light Attack Fighter Model 250, the Heavy/Light Attack Fighter 500, the CL-1c Lancet interceptor, the X-TIE Fighter, the Corellian attack fighter and the YT-5100 Shriek-class bomber.
Notably, the CDF also utilized older Imperial starship designs, even decades after the Galactic Civil War's conclusion, including TIE series fighters, A-9 Vigilance interceptors, A-10 interceptors, I-7 Howlrunners, EF76 Nebulon-B escort frigates, Carrack-class light cruisers and Victory-class Star Destroyers.
During the final centuries of the Galactic Republic, the Corellian defense organization constructed substantial warships to protect the sector from external threats. In common with other major capital ships deployed within the affluent Core sectors of the Republic, these vessels were equipped with hyperdrives of limited range, intended to prevent their involvement in offensive military operations.
Following the Declaration of a New Order in 19 BBY, the Corellian sector transitioned into an Imperial client state, demonstrating allegiance to Emperor Palpatine. While the Corellian Diktat retained the title of Governor-General of the Corellian sector, the Imperial Grand Moff assigned to the Corellian sector oversaw the Corellian Defense Force. Throughout the Galactic Civil War, elements of the Corellian Defense Force were repeatedly dispatched to support Imperial forces against the Rebel Alliance.
In the aftermath of the Emperor's demise at the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, numerous Imperial loyalists fled the crumbling Empire, seeking refuge within the Imperial-sympathetic Corellian sector. Former Imperial soldiers joined the Corellian Defense Force's Space Service in large numbers.
Towards the end of the Galactic Civil War, the New Republic assumed control of the Corellian system following the collapse of the Diktat's government. Micamberlecto, the New Republic's newly appointed Governor-General of the Corellian sector, became the new commander-in-chief of the Corellian Armed Forces. However, Corellian troops, particularly those loyal to the Empire and the Diktat, resisted obeying a New Republic appointee. During the First Corellian Insurrection in 18 ABY, the majority of the CDF Space Service forces betrayed the New Republic. In the initial days of the insurrection, CDF warships, including capital ships, defected en masse to the Triad of Sacorria. Subsequently, during Thrackan Sal-Solo's Human League's takeover of Corellia, the few remaining Corellian space forces within the Corellian system aligned themselves with the self-proclaimed Diktat Thrackan Sal-Solo. Vessels of the Corellian defense fleet attempted to capture New Republic Chief of State Leia Organa Solo as she escaped Corellia. The New Republic ultimately triumphed over the Sacorrian Triad, which was responsible for the entire conflict, at the Battle of Centerpoint Station. There, the New Republic navy decimated the Sacorrian fleet, including the treacherous CDF space forces.
Near the conclusion of the Galactic Civil War, elements of the Corellian Defense Force participated in the Combined Defense Forces of the New Republic under the command of Corellian General Bel Iblis.
More than a decade later, in the years following the Yuuzhan Vong War, the Corellian system was governed by the Five Worlds. As tensions escalated between the Five Worlds and the Galactic Alliance, a clandestine fleet of Corellian Dreadnaughts was secretly constructed within the Kiris Asteroid Cluster to bolster the existing Corellian space forces. In 40 ABY, the Second Galactic Civil War ignited when the Galactic Alliance Navy invaded the Corellian system. During the initial phase of the war, the CDF Space Service, particularly the Corellian Home Fleet, played a significant role as the blockaded Corellia became the epicenter of the conflict. During Operation Noble Savage, Corellian starfighter squadrons, led by General Wedge Antilles, destroyed the Galactic Alliance's bridgehead in the Corellian system. Around the same time, the Corellian fleet secretly assembled in the Kiris shipyards was deployed far from the Corellian sector to fight in the Hapes Cluster. As the war intensified, other worlds joined Corellia, forming the Confederation. Corellian Defense Force units were then deployed across the galaxy alongside other Confederation forces to engage the Galactic Alliance. The CDF navy participated in the Battle of Gilatter VIII, the Battle of Kuat, the Battle of Kashyyyk, and the Second Battle of Roche. At the battle of the rendezvous point, a decoy fleet consisting of decommissioned Corellian ships was employed to lure Galactic Alliance Chief of State Jacen Solo and destroy the Galactic Alliance Second Fleet using the Centerpoint Station superweapon. Ultimately, the Second Galactic Civil War concluded with Jacen Solo's death in 41 ABY during the Battle of Uroro Station.
