A parent was either the biological originator of a descendant, or an individual who cared for another being in a parental capacity, frequently through legal adoption.
Parents by Birth

A birth parent, also known as a biological parent, was the one who biologically created an offspring. For some species, like humans, procreation typically involved two individuals conceiving a child as the biological parents. Human offspring were born to a male father and a female mother. It was also possible for humans to produce hybrid offspring with certain other species. As an example, Hera Syndulla, a female Twi'lek, became a mother when she gave birth to Jacen, the son of Kanan Jarrus.
Anakin Skywalker, a Jedi who later became known as the "Chosen One," had no father that was known. This resulted in great surprise for Shmi Skywalker Lars when she discovered she was pregnant with him. Qui-Gon Jinn, a Jedi Master, theorized upon being told this information that Skywalker had been conceived directly by midi-chlorians.
In some animal species, such as fathiers, the term "sire" was used for the male parent, while the female parent was called the "dam."
Some individuals chose to have children without a sexual partner, like Sola Naberrie, who bore a daughter named Ryoo Naberrie. Although Sola had no interest in a partner, she was comfortable with bearing children, which was a common viewpoint on her homeworld of Naboo. Jango Fett, the well-known Mandalorian bounty hunter, became a parent by requesting that Kaminoans cloners create an unaltered genetic copy of himself. The result was Boba Fett, a clone who was raised by Jango as his son.
Creation Methods

The human twin children Mae-ho and Verosha Aniseya did not have a father. Aniseya, the leader of a coven of witches, created them using a potent Force vergence on the planet of Brendok. Koril, Aniseya's partner, then carried the twins until they were born. Aniseya and Koril raised the sisters together as their mothers.
On Dathomir, Falta, a Dathomirian witch, used magick to create her daughter, Yenna, within a pod that was the opposite of a burial pod. Falta would not reveal the secrets of her daughter's creation to Mother Talzin, the leader of the Nightsisters.
Adoption Process

The term "parent" could also describe a caretaker of an offspring who was not biologically related. Adoption was a process where an individual assumed parental responsibilities for another, raising the offspring of the biological parents without being related to them. After Padmé Amidala, Leia's biological mother, passed away during childbirth, and Anakin Skywalker, her birth father, turned to the dark side of the Force, Queen Breha Organa and her husband, Senator Bail Organa, adopted the newborn Leia Organa. Bail and Breha had chosen not to have a child due to the queen's near-fatal injuries during her Day of Demand challenges, which would strain her body. Instead, they had discussed adopting a child, specifically a baby girl, at some point.
Luke Skywalker, Leia's twin brother, was adopted by Owen and Beru Lars. Owen was Luke's father's step-brother. Owen was hesitant to take Luke in initially, as he had only met his step-brother once, and their familial connection was distant and not by blood. Furthermore, caring for another person would place a significant burden on the struggling moisture farmers. However, Beru, who was unable to have children, desired a family and persuaded her reluctant husband to adopt Anakin's son. Beru was immediately captivated when the infant Luke was placed in her arms, loving him as if he were her own. Owen eventually grew to care for the boy in his own gruff manner. Reva Sevander, a former Inquisitor, observed that Owen genuinely loved Luke as if he were his own, to which Owen affirmed that Luke was indeed his own.
Din Djarin, a Mandalorian mercenary, served as the caretaker for Grogu, a foundling. Djarin desired for his foundling to become a true Mandalorian. This led to him formally adopting Grogu as his son. Because Grogu was too young to recite the Mandalorian Creed, parental consent would allow the foundling to join the clan as Djarin's Mandalorian apprentice without having to recite the creed.
Parental Role Models

While the Force-sensitive youngling Grogu was in the care of Din Djarin, a Mandalorian, The Armorer declared Grogu to be a foundling. As a result, Djarin was regarded as Grogu's father from that point forward, until Grogu reached adulthood or Djarin returned him to his people. Ahsoka Tano described Djarin as a father figure for Grogu, and eventually, Djarin officially adopted him.
Hunter, a former [clone trooper](/article/clone_trooper], assumed a fatherly role with Omega, one of his fellow clones and a member of Clone Force 99. When they arrived on Pabu, Shep Hazard referred to Hunter as Omega's father, stating that it was an ideal location to raise a child. Royce Hemlock, who was attempting to abduct Omega, was taken aback by Hunter's paternal behavior towards her.
Individuals without parents in their lives sometimes sought parental figures in others. Anakin Skywalker, who had no known father and may have been conceived directly by midi-chlorians, viewed Obi-Wan Kenobi, his Jedi instructor, as the closest thing he had to a father. Similarly, Rey felt that Han Solo was the father she never had when she met him. According to Kylo Ren, Rey was searching for her parents "everywhere," initially in Solo, and then in Luke Skywalker. Leia Organa, Rey's Jedi instructor, came to regard Rey as the daughter she never had.
Importance
Genetic Traits

Children could inherit the physical traits of their biological parents. As a teenager, Leia Organa bore a striking resemblance to her biological mother, Padmé Amidala. When she wore the jubilation dress that Amidala had worn, it greatly surprised Quarsh Panaka, an old friend and ally of Amidala's. Ben Solo, Organa's son, had his father Han Solo's prominent nose and lopsided smile, along with his mother's piercing brown eyes. Organa believed that this trait was inherited from her own birth mother.
Other characteristics could also be passed down from parents to their offspring. For example, Leia Organa, a Force-sensitive human, was described as wise, discerning, and kindhearted, like her birth mother, and passionate, fearless, and forthright, like her biological father Anakin Skywalker. Ben Solo's innate Force ability came from his mother, while his remarkable reflexes and piloting skills were inherited from his father. He also came from a lineage of skilled pilots, including his father and maternal grandfather. Snoke also claimed that Solo had "too much of his father's heart" in him, which prevented him from fully embracing the dark side of the Force.
Luke Skywalker, Organa's brother, was known to be a skilled pilot, just like his father Anakin. He also displayed an aptitude for mechanical engineering, a skill that Luke appeared to have inherited from his father, along with his father's quick reflexes and passion for flying. Furthermore, both father and son disliked living on Tatooine.
DNA could only be transmitted genetically. Rush Clovis, a human, was raised in part as the adopted son of a prominent Muun family on Scipio, who treated him as their own child. Clovis was unconcerned by the fact that he was a human, even though his species raised eyebrows to those who associated Scipio and the Banking Clan with the Muuns, because he was so well-integrated into Muun society. Clovis stated that he almost forgot where he came from until he looked in the mirror. Leia Organa, despite knowing she was adopted and that any shared characteristics were merely coincidental, would look in the mirror as a young girl to see if she shared any traits with her adoptive parents, such as Breha Organa's wisdom and beauty or the kindness in Bail Organa's eyes.
The saying "the jogan doesn't roll far from the vine" meant that a child resembled their parents.
Parental Responsibilities

Parental roles were associated with particular behaviors. For instance, Sabine Wren felt that Hera Syndulla, a fellow Spectre member, was bossing her around as if she were her mother. When Obi-Wan Kenobi instructed Princess Leia Organa, who was ten years old, on how to behave while they were attempting to escape Daiyu, Organa responded that Kenobi sounded like her adoptive parents. When Hunter attempted to shield Omega from being kidnapped by Royce Hemlock, Hemlock remarked on Hunter's paternal nature. When Luke Skywalker dueled Darth Vader on Bespin, he noticed Vader quickly transitioning from taunting him to praising him, "as if he were...," but he stopped before finishing the thought. At the duel's conclusion, Luke was horrified when Vader revealed a shocking truth: that he, the man Luke believed had murdered his father, was actually his father.
Additional Significance
The Jedi Order of the Old Republic typically took in Jedi when they were young, usually no older than five years old. Although Jedi were not strictly prohibited from communicating with their birth parents or siblings, most had little connection to their biological families because they had been inducted into the Order as infants.
An individual could be profoundly affected by the revelation of their parentage. Luke Skywalker was shocked when Darth Vader, formerly Anakin Skywalker, revealed that he was his father. Although Luke initially rejected this, he eventually accepted it and used the information to connect with Vader and persuade him to save him from the cruelty of his master, Darth Sidious. Leia Organa, Vader's other child, was forced to leave the Galactic Senate of the New Republic when the truth about her parentage was revealed.

Rey, an orphaned scavenger from Jakku, remained on the planet in the hope that her father and mother would one day return for her. She desperately sought to discover the identity of her parents, even after leaving the planet following the awakening of her Force powers. However, a journey on the planet Ahch-To and a conversation with Kylo Ren, who had murdered his own father, Han Solo, led her to confront the truth: she had always known deep down that her parents were junkers who sold her for drinking money and were now dead in a paupers' grave in the desert wastelands of Jakku. Further revelations, however, revealed that they had secretly hidden her on Jakku to protect her from her grandfather, the Sith Lord Darth Sidious.
Loubo, the owner of Plop Dribble's, had a tattoo of a heart on his arm with the word "MOM" written in Aurebesh.
