Breha Organa, a human female from Alderaan, held the position of queen on her homeworld during the last decades of the Galactic Republic. She also played a key role as a founding member of the Alliance to Restore the Republic. After the Galactic Empire took control following the Clone Wars, Alderaan became a hub of early rebellion against the Empire. While she didn't survive to witness the Empire's downfall, Breha, along with her husband Bail, were celebrated as heroes and martyrs of the Galactic Civil War.
In her youth, Breha asserted her claim to the throne through her Day of Demand, where she experienced a bad fall that ultimately demonstrated her dedication to Alderaan. Due to the injuries she sustained, Breha and Bail chose not to have biological children, as it would put a strain on the queen's health. After the proclamation of the New Order, an opportunity to adopt arose when Bail brought home Leia, whom they adopted. Leia, the daughter of Senator Padmé Amidala of Naboo and fallen Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker, became the Princess of Alderaan, though her true parentage was kept secret.
Leveraging Alderaan's resources and their influential positions, Breha and Bail secretly aided planets oppressed by the Empire and sought out rebel groups to help establish a foundation for revolution. As Bail focused on unifying the rebellion, Breha personally guided a select group of young Alderaanians, educating them about their planet's culture and history. During this period, the Jedi-hunting Inquisitorius attempted to exploit the Organas to locate the fugitive Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, endangering Leia and her separated twin brother, Luke Skywalker, but their protectors ensured their safety. Despite the Empire's increasing efforts to suppress the rebellion, Breha and Bail persisted in their struggle, and when Mon Mothma publicly condemned the Empire and resigned from the Senate, their resistance was formally unified as the Alliance to Restore the Republic.
As the conflict between the Alliance and the Empire escalated, widespread war became unavoidable. Following the destruction of Jedha City, the Alliance secured its first major victory in the Galactic Civil War at the Battle of Scarif. Despite their success at Scarif, Breha and Bail were killed when the Death Star, an Imperial planet-destroying superweapon, obliterated Alderaan just a few days later.

The girl who would become Breha Organa came from Alderaan, a peaceful and influential planet that was a part of the galaxy's Elder Houses. She had at least one sister, Celly, and was related to Bail Antilles, who represented Alderaan in the Senate of the Galactic Republic. While Breha's mother was pregnant, her father remained on Alderaan for the entire pregnancy and several months afterward.
As a child, Breha spent her early years in the Royal Palace of Aldera, the planet's capital city. She often compared the palace's grand entrance hall to the inside of a seashell because of its silvery blue, smooth, and lustrous interior, and the fact that it was always slightly cool, even during the hottest summer days. Her mother instilled in her the pacifist values of Alderaanian culture, and she was the primary heir to become Queen of Alderaan. Before she turned fourteen, Princess Breha accompanied the queen to assist in treaty negotiations.
At sixteen, she performed her Day of Demand ceremony, claiming her right to the throne by setting forth three challenges to prove her worth. During her Challenge of the Body, Breha suffered a serious accident that was remembered by her people. She was nearly killed, but guards observing at a distance acted quickly. Although she survived, her heart and lungs were replaced with pulmonodes. Unlike most people who received such replacements, she chose to leave them visible as a reminder of her survival and commitment. Despite some criticism, this act demonstrated her devotion to Alderaan. After her fall, she was officially invested as the crown princess and future queen of Alderaan.
Sometime between 40 BBY and 28 BBY, Breha ascended to the throne and married Bail Prestor, an Alderaanian noble distantly related to Lord Mellowyn of Birren. Bail relinquished his legacy to marry her. Although they desired children, the strain on the queen's body from her accident led them to adopt an heir instead of attempting to conceive one.

As queen, Breha also served as her planet's minister of education. She had an adviser named Visaiya, who reminded her of her daily schedule. Breha considered her a friend and joked that losing Visaiya would be like losing a hand. As a symbol of their friendship, Breha had matching silver rings made for them to wear on their right index fingers.
In 28 BBY, Breha and Bail hosted Bail's senatorial colleague, Padmé Amidala, former Queen of Naboo and Senator of the Chommell sector, who had just finished her first full session in the senate. Amidala's entourage, including several handmaidens who respectfully lowered their hoods, accompanied her at Breha's invitation. Breha greeted Amidala and her group in the palace throne room before they moved to a nearby balcony for breakfast overlooking Appenza Peak. The group stayed for a week before returning to Naboo.
During the visit, Breha discussed with Amidala her and Bail's decision not to have biological children due to her Challenge of the Body injuries and Bail's inability to spend months on Alderaan during a pregnancy, unlike Breha's father. They also discussed Amidala's desire to have children with a partner, unlike her sister Sola Naberrie, as Amidala wanted a relationship like her parents Ruwee and Jobal Naberrie. Breha noted that, unlike Alderaan's hereditary monarchy, Naboo's elective monarchy meant Amidala's children wouldn't be bound to politics. Breha also mentioned how her mother's thinking changed after her birth, focusing on the future, and how she imagined she would feel the same, regardless of how her children came to her. They also discussed Naboo's decision to install an Ion pulse, with Breha admitting she couldn't judge Naboo's defense choices, having never experienced war.

Early in the Clone Wars, Jedi Master Yoda informed Bail about a suspicious resupply company that requested a senator instead of a Jedi. Bail and Breha's people investigated the company, but they became overwhelmed.
During Breha's reign, and through Bail's efforts in the Senate, Alderaan advocated for ending the Clone Wars between the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems due to its pacifist beliefs. The planet hosted a conference to help refugees displaced by the galactic conflict, as well as many others from across the Republic seeking a new start or a permanent home on Alderaan. Breha and Bail sent aid to planets ravaged by the Separatists, including credits, supplies, doctors, teachers, architects, builders, medics, and droids. Breha sent her people to dangerous places where they were needed, and though some never returned, their families didn't blame her, knowing she had sacrificed and would again if necessary. As the Clone Wars ended, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine—secretly the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Sidious, who manipulated the conflict for his tyrannical goals—abolished the Republic and transformed it into the Galactic Empire, declaring himself absolute ruler.

Palpatine also issued Order 66, ordering all clone troopers to eliminate their Jedi leaders, destroying the Jedi Order. During that time, Amidala gave birth to twins, Luke and Leia, before passing away. The children's father, Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker, had fallen to the dark side of the Force and become Darth Vader, ending both the Jedi and the Separatists. Knowing the children would be in danger if the Sith discovered them—the Emperor and Vader believed Amidala died before giving birth—Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi decided to take Luke to live with Vader's family on Tatooine. With Kenobi and Yoda's consent, Bail decided he and Breha would adopt Leia, as they had always wanted a daughter. The Queen received a letter from Bail, informing her of Amidala's death and the coming arrival of something that would "change [their] lives forever in a profound way." When the Viceroy returned to the palace, he placed baby Leia in the queen's arms, and she gazed lovingly at her new daughter.
Bail and Breha agreed to raise Leia and never reveal her birth father's identity. A few days later, Leia became an official member of the royal family on her Name Day, presented by Breha and Bail in the palace throne room. While Leia's adoption was celebrated publicly on Alderaan, everyone assumed she was one of the many children orphaned by the Clone Wars. They were told her birth father died in one of the last battles, and her birth mother only lived long enough to give birth.

Breha and Bail were Leia's primary companions as she grew up, as the princess had few friends her age due to the social divide between those inside and outside the palace, even within the egalitarian Alderaanian monarchy.
As a young child, Leia believed the glowing in Breha's chest from her pulmonodes was a bouquet of blooming Candlewick flowers. Even after learning it was Breha's pulmonodes, Leia still loved the flowers, as they symbolized magic and love to her.
Bail and Breha often told Leia the story of how they had waited a long time for a child, and how Bail returned from a "mysterious mission" to surprise Breha with a baby girl. Bail and Breha would also patiently answer all of Leia's questions, no matter how many. They didn't rely on a human nurse or caretaker droid when Leia had nightmares; instead, one or both of them would comfort her. Every time Leia entered a room, they smiled, making her feel loved simply for existing. Although most children in her position would become "hopelessly spoiled," Leia always wanted to be helpful, especially to those she cared for, and she loved her parents more than she thought possible.
One day, while the queen was reading a paper book in the palace gardens, her toddler daughter, who had escaped her Nanny droid WA-2V, climbed onto her lap. Intrigued, Leia pointed at a nearby statue of Padmé Amidala, instantly recognizing her as a queen. Queen Breha then recounted Amidala's story, from her days in the Apprentice Legislature at age eight to her tragic death, highlighting her battles in both the senate and on the battlefield. Breha told Leia that Padmé was a queen 'and so much more.' As she styled Leia's hair into two buns, Breha concluded the story with the lesson that Amidala had a spark of hope, and Leia did too. She told Leia that even when Breha tried to protect Leia and keep her from her destiny, Leia must never doubt that she was a princess 'and so much more'.
During Leia's childhood, she attempted to learn basic accounting, doing well enough but hating every moment. Within a week, Breha released her with "a hug and a laugh." When Leia protested that she needed to learn if she was to be queen, Breha jokingly said she wouldn't if she fell in love with someone who liked bookkeeping, as she could make her viceroy do it. Breha later taught Leia how to care for orchids, as she herself grew Malastarian orchids, and ensured Leia was prepared to be a future leader.

In the years following the Emperor's rise, the queen mentored a select group of young Alderaanians, teaching them about their homeworld's heritage. One pupil, Evaan Verlaine, was so grateful that she developed a lifelong loyalty to the House of Organa and became a committed royalist. Breha's husband, while still part of the ceremonial Imperial Senate, became involved in an underground rebel network that evolved into the Alliance to Restore the Republic.
Leia eventually grew bored with her education, such as learning the names of every queen of Alderaan before her mother. Bail and Breha sympathized but were determined to make Leia a "proper princess." Eventually, they decided to let Leia learn self-defense, with even Leia's aunts agreeing, as they knew being a princess could be dangerous and, given their wealth and importance, Leia was under constant threat of abduction and might need to defend herself. Breha also taught Leia how to pilot small ships.
Alderaan was among the earliest supporters of the Alliance, with Bail building a loose underground network of cells, though officials cautiously avoided open support. The Queen and her husband became close friends with Jan Dodonna, a future General in the Alliance. At some point, the queen passed down her necklace, the chalcedony waves, to the princess.
A week before Leia's ninth Name Day, in 10 BBY, Leia hid behind the screens surrounding the palace's banquet hall where Breha and Bail were dining alone. Assuming they were discussing her presents, she discovered they were laughing and flirting, causing her to scurry away red-faced to avoid "an unwelcome lesson in what spouses did together in their private hours." The event caused Leia to avoid the screens for seven years.
When Leia was nine, she worried that Bail and Breha would arrange a marriage to a prince she had never met. To avoid this, Leia ran away to the woods near the palace, learning to hunt and survive there. Breha and Bail sent guards to find her, and they managed to find her after a week. Leia didn't run away again but often escaped to the woods for fun.

In 9 BBY, the queen officiated a ceremony at Aldera during which Miara Larte of the Alderaanian consular security was promoted to captain at the request of the viceroy. Several other promotions were also handed out that day. That same year, while preparing for a visit from her sister Celly, brother-in-law Kayo, and nephew, Niano Organa, the queen went to pick up Leia as she was being dressed by her handmaidens. She asked how the princess was doing before urging them to hurry, as they were running late. After the handmaidens confirmed Leia was ready, Breha began to tell Leia that, because they needed their extended family's support, she should try not to make anyone cry. However, she soon realized her daughter had tricked her, having an alien friend take her place. The alien informed Breha that Leia insisted she would have found the trick amusing, and Breha deduced that Leia was in the cellar, kitchen, or the woods.
Breha, flanked by two Alderaanian guards, found Leia perched atop a tree, shipspotting with her toy droid, Lola, to avoid her royal duties. Annoyed, Breha asked why she had to do that that day and ordered her to climb down. As she climbed from the tree, Breha murmured about the difficulties of raising Leia, claiming it was like raising a Glor-ag. Once Leia was down, Breha informed her that she would be taking Lola for the rest of the day as punishment, but Leia argued that the droid had done nothing wrong. Despite this, Breha ordered Leia to shut her down, and the princess reluctantly submitted, turning off Lola, and Breha placed the droid in her back pocket. As they headed toward the palace, Breha noted that, if Leia behaved as well as she climbed, she would be a senator already. Breha continued, saying Leia had to change inside the speeder, but Leia responded that no one would notice at the reception if she wasn't there. Breha replied that she would miss her, but Leia complained that all she did was wave. Breha reminded her that she could do more than wave, she could get out of it what she put into it, and Leia apologized meekly for her disturbances. As she went in for a hug, Breha realized Leia had seized the chance to take back Lola, pointing out that she could feel Leia doing it. An annoyed Breha commanded Leia to follow her, to which the princess answered that she was living in a prison. Unbeknownst to the Organas and their guards, they were being watched by a figure.

Later, Breha and Leia found Bail as he awaited the arrival of the extended Organa family on a landing pad. Bail began to discuss the ships Leia had spotted in the woods, but Breha cautioned her husband against fueling Leia's imaginative play. Just then, the extended Organa family appeared, and Breha and her family offered them greetings. A speeder then conveyed them away, amidst the cheers of gathered crowds. At the subsequent reception, Bail and Kayo engaged in a discussion about Imperial politics, during which Breha, noticing Bail's annoyance, offered him a drink. As the reception progressed, Breha overheard Leia embroiled in a disagreement with Niano, prompting her parents to intervene and pull the princess aside. Leia complained about Niano's unpleasant behavior, but Breha reminded her that Niano was her cousin. Undeterred, Leia pointed out Niano's rudeness towards droids, to which Breha advised Leia to rise above such criticism. The queen then requested Leia to apologize to her cousin, but Leia refused. Breha then left the room, leading to a conversation between Bail and his daughter. Despite Bail's attempts, Leia ultimately escaped into the nearby woods.
Upon discovering Leia's disappearance, Bail sought out Breha. Unbeknownst to them, the Third Sister, an Inquisitor eager to impress Darth Vader, had orchestrated Leia's kidnapping by Vect Nokru and his crew, hoping to draw out the elusive Kenobi. Nokru and his accomplices seized Leia from the forest and transported her to the planet Daiyu. As the Third Sister had anticipated, Breha and Bail—the latter with past connections to the Jedi from the Clone Wars—contacted Kenobi via hologram after tracing Nokru's ship to Daiyu. However, Kenobi initially declined, citing his responsibility to protect Leia's twin brother, Luke. He only relented after Bail journeyed to Tatooine to meet the Jedi in person. The Jedi Master successfully rescued Leia from Nokru, and while still on Daiyu, informed the Organas that Leia was safe.

Thanks to the combined efforts of Kenobi and the anti-Imperial organization known as the Hidden Path, Leia was safely returned to Alderaan. Following her return, Breha went to collect her adopted daughter, only to discover her wearing a holster that had once belonged to Tala Durith. Amused, Breha revealed that she actually loved it. The two then joined Bail on the landing platform, where they had previously welcomed Celly and her family, and were reunited with Kenobi, who had traveled to Alderaan. As Leia joyfully reunited with Lola, whom she had entrusted to Kenobi to bolster his strength for his confrontation with Vader, Breha expressed her gratitude to Kenobi for his assistance. He responded that the Organas knew where to find him should they ever need him. As Kenobi and Leia bid farewell, Breha embraced her daughter as Kenobi departed back to Tatooine.

Prior to Leia's Day of Demand ceremony, Breha presented Leia with the Rhindon Sword, placing it on Leia's bed and assuring her that she would wear the sword not only during her Day of Demand and investiture but also at her wedding, emphasizing that Leia would have the freedom to choose her own spouse. During their conversation, Breha explained that the sword symbolized their monarchy and served as a reminder that choice, not bloodline, determined the ruler of Alderaan, just as she and Bail had chosen Leia as their daughter and future queen. Breha wanted Leia to understand that despite the obligations and duties associated with her family's privileges, she would always retain the right to choose, including her marriage partner. When that day arrived, Breha would fasten the Rhindon Sword around Leia's waist before she met her husband or wife. Breha further explained that the sword represented, to all of Alderaan, especially its rulers, the freedom to choose their own destiny and the skills and weapons necessary to defend it.
In 3 BBY, Breha, Bail, and their allies, including Mon Mothma and Winmey Lenz from Chandrila, Tynnra Pamlo from Taris, and Cinderon Malpe from Derella, attended Leia's Day of Demand in the palace throne room, amidst an approaching thunderstorm. Breha wore a bronze silk dress, her hair elaborately styled with braids interwoven with strings of beads, while Bail donned the traditional long jacket of the viceroy, leading Leia to think that her parents looked "more regal than usual" and almost intimidating.
As Leia approached her parents at the front of the throne room, Breha initiated the ceremony by asking who placed the queen in her 'seat of power.' Leia then delivered her speech, identifying herself as Leia Organa, Princess of Alderaan, and stating that she had come before them to hear their acknowledgment that she had reached her sixteenth year. Continuing the traditional dialogue, Bail acknowledged Leia's age and asked why she came before them armed. Leia responded, kneeling and holding the Rhindon Sword above her head with one hand, that she had come to demand her right to the throne, as they would acknowledge her as heir on that day. Breha stated that the Crown of Alderaan was not merely inherited but had to be earned, with the heir proving herself worthy in body, mind, and heart, and asked if Leia was prepared to do so.
Standing up and lowering the sword, Leia informed her mother and queen that she was prepared and had chosen three challenges. Upon successfully completing these challenges, her parents would invest her as crown princess of Alderaan. Bail instructed her to reveal the challenges, so they could determine their worthiness. Although Bail and Breha were already aware of Leia's challenges, Leia declared that for her Challenge of the Body, she would climb Appenza Peak and reach its summit. For her Challenge of the Mind, she would not only assist her father in the Imperial Senate but also represent their world in the Apprentice Legislature. For her Challenge of the Heart, she would undertake missions of charity and mercy to planets in need, covering all costs from her share of the royal purse. Through these challenges, she would prove her right to the crown. Breha nodded in agreement, acknowledging the worthiness of the challenges. Breha then rose from her throne as Leia stepped onto the dais and repositioned the sword in front of her, grasping its hilt, her fingers briefly overlapping with Leia's before her daughter released it. Breha then instructed all those present to bear witness that if her daughter fulfilled the challenges, she would be invested as crown princess, heir to the throne of Alderaan.

Initially, after the ceremony, Breha and Bail beamed with pride. However, as guests began to surround them, they turned to greet them rather than congratulate their daughter. Breha took Senator Pamlo's hands, thanking her for her presence. Leia interpreted this as confirmation of her long-held suspicion that her parents were ignoring her and no longer cared, as they seemed to be slowly distancing themselves from her over the past six months.
Throughout the year, Breha and her husband also hosted numerous dinner parties in the palace's banquet hall, sometimes lasting until dawn. These gatherings secretly served as strategy meetings to help form the Rebel Alliance. However, Leia remained unaware of this and believed that her mother had suddenly transformed into a socialite, inviting dignitaries from across the galaxy to lavish banquets. Leia would occasionally catch Breha dozing over the account books the next day, giving Leia the impression that her mother's responsibilities to her people were no longer as important as throwing extravagant parties.
Around this time, Breha also arranged a pathfinding class for Leia and some of her fellow Apprentice Legislators to foster better relationships. However, Leia suspected that it was a way for Breha to alleviate her guilt about not spending enough time with her. Among those in the pathfinding class were Amilyn Holdo from Gatalenta and Harp Allor from Chandrila, who had been sponsored by the Organas' ally Winmey Lenz.

After spending several hours on communications with irate Imperial officers across the galaxy, Breha also welcomed Leia and the refugees she had brought back from Wobani following a mercy mission there as part of Leia's Challenge of the Heart. She arrived at the Aldera spaceport with a team of medical personnel, social workers, and other support staff to assist them, her arrival announced by a droid. She assured the refugees that they were welcome on Alderaan and apologized for not being better prepared to receive them, promising that her team would attend to their every need from that moment forward. She offered them the opportunity to rest, recover, and consider their next steps, pledging that each person arriving that day would receive a stipend to either travel to family or friends on another world or begin a new life on Alderaan, as her welcome gift to them all. While royalty on Alderaan was typically greeted with gentle applause, the people at the spaceport cheered, "All hail Queen Breha!"
Once the cheering subsided, Breha stepped off the platform, allowing the refugees to begin receiving assistance, and approached her daughter, with the crowd parting to create a clear path without her needing to gesture or speak. Upon reaching her daughter, Breha embraced Leia warmly, but when she pulled back, Leia noticed that Breha's lips were pressed into a thin line. Knowing what the expression signified, Leia asked her mother what she had done. Breha then demanded that Leia return to the palace.

Breha and Leia relocated to the private library in the palace, where they argued about Leia's decision to travel to Wobani without consulting her parents and her actions there, which included deceiving the Imperial major in charge of Wobani and her ship being intercepted at Calderos Station shortly after a 'dissent action'. Breha revealed to Leia that her actions had likely permanently stalled the negotiations between Bail, Mothma, and their allies for the relocation of the Wobani population. Breha urged her daughter to remember that she might not possess all the facts when entering a situation.
Leia later attended her first pathfinding class, organized by Breha and taught by Chief Pangie of the Chandrilan Pathfinding Corps. Amilyn Holdo thanked Leia upon meeting her in the class for Breha's invitation. After Holdo expressed her eagerness to try pathfinding and her hope that it would be dangerous, as she wished to become more comfortable with 'the nearness and inevitability' of death, Leia decided to heed her mother's advice about trusting her instincts and determined that Holdo would not be handling her ropes. When Leia returned to the palace after her first pathfinding lesson, she sought to discuss it with her parents, only to discover that they were planning a banquet and had instructed not to be disturbed.
Upon Leia's return from Crait, having learned of her parents' involvement in the growing rebellion, Breha greeted Leia in the throne room, where they began to discuss the matter shortly before Bail arrived. The pair admitted their involvement in the rebellion to Leia but declined to provide further details. Bail and Breha believed that the only way to protect their daughter was to ensure her complete innocence so that, if they were all captured and tortured, the Empire might release her upon realizing she knew nothing and install her as queen, making it appear as a natural transfer of power. Leia then confessed to her parents that she felt they had forgotten about her, devastating Bail and Breha, who embraced her and reassured her of their love and that they were fighting the Empire for her and her future.
Shortly after, Leia's parents welcomed her upon her recent return from Coruscant in the family's private library, where Breha presented Leia with a frosty glass of mintea, Leia's favorite. They began catching up with Leia, discussing her upcoming mercy mission to Onoam, which sounded familiar to Bail, as if he had heard the name years ago. However, before he could recall, he and Breha departed, as Captain Raymus Antilles needed to speak with them in Bail's office.

While on Onoam, one of Naboo's moons, Leia encountered Quarsh Panaka, an old friend and ally of her biological mother, while wearing the jubilation dress Amidala wore to celebrate the liberation of Naboo from the Trade Federation. Panaka correctly deduced that Leia was Amidala's biological daughter and intended to inform Palpatine of this, but he was prevented from doing so when he was assassinated by Saw Gerrera's Partisans, who had planted a bomb in his chalet.
Upon Leia's return home, she overheard her parents discussing the matter in the library. While Bail advocated for taking a stand to bring the Partisans under control, Breha, while acknowledging Gerrera's flawed judgment, suggested that they begin to consider how far they were willing to go. Leia then interrupted them. Breha, relieved to see her daughter safe, inquired if there was another reason for Leia's decision to travel to Onoam. Leia questioned whether her parents were involved in Panaka's death, an accusation that greatly angered Bail, who pointed out that they were fighting against the Empire, which inevitably involved killing people sooner or later, a point with which Breha agreed. Bail left the library shortly after.
Breha then escorted Leia to the palace gardens and demanded to know the details of her meeting with Panaka. As Leia recounted the events to her mother, Breha appeared to age years in minutes, realizing they "came so close to utter destruction." Although Leia claimed that she was in greater danger than her parents knew, Breha explained that while Leia was the person in the greatest immediate danger, more than she could have known, Breha was uncertain of what they would do. Breha then informed Leia about Gerrera and his partisans, as well as Bail's reluctance to accept that the rebellion would require a large-scale conflict, due to his experiences during the Clone Wars.
A few days later, Bail and Breha hosted another dinner party at the palace with their allies, where they discussed the assassination of Quarsh Panaka. While all agreed that Gerrera's actions were misguided, Breha attempted to persuade the others that they would need to resort to further violence if they were to defeat the Empire. Despite his personal reservations, Bail presented a united front with his wife. After the banquet concluded, Breha visited Leia's room to talk with her. During their conversation, Breha remarked that "sometimes it does a girl good to fall for a bit of a scoundrel, now and then," before departing, leaving Leia to wonder who her mother might have been infatuated with before meeting her father.

Breha, alongside her husband and daughter, discussed the arrests on Christophsis during dinner on the terrace, where they were all appalled by the events. Breha witnessed Bail lose his temper with Leia, who had suggested that they prioritize preserving Alderaan's freedom rather than actively fighting the Empire. He rebuked her, stating that she was neither selfish nor cowardly and should cease acting as such, before storming off. Breha reassured her daughter that Bail was not truly angry with her but was reminded of his own past reasoning and was struggling with the realization that a large-scale conflict would be necessary.
Prior to another of the Organas' dinner parties, Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin, seeking to apprehend the Organas and their allies, unexpectedly arrived on Alderaan, claiming that his personal ship, the Carrion Spike, had experienced a systems malfunction and required repairs on Alderaan. This forced Breha to invite him to the dinner party to avoid arousing his suspicion. Citing the superstition of seating an odd number for dinner, Breha also invited Leia to join them for her first official banquet, despite heirs typically not attending banquets until after their investiture.

During the dinner party, the Organas and most of their guests were served a diluted version of the Alderaanian wine Toniray, while Tarkin and a select few other guests were served true Toniray, keeping the Organas alert while subtly dulling Tarkin's senses. In an attempt to prevent Tarkin from confirming the true purpose of the dinner party, Breha feigned drunkenness and accused her husband and Mon Mothma of having an affair, implying that Bail had cheated on her the year before with a woman from Corellia.
This caused Leia to burst into tears, despite knowing the fight was staged, and angered Tarkin, prompting him to storm out, despite Bail's pretended apologies. With Tarkin gone, Breha reassured her daughter that the argument was not genuine and surprised some of their allies when they realized that the Organas had confided in their teenage daughter about their growing rebellion. Leia clarified that her parents had not explicitly told her; she had deduced it herself.
Shortly thereafter, Breha was present in the family's private library while Bail and Leia argued about her recent trip with her friend Amilyn Holdo, during which they discovered that Winmey Lenz was not loyal to the rebels and was merely seeking to benefit from whichever side emerged victorious. Breha attempted to calm her husband and suggested that they allow Leia to become involved in the rebellion under controlled conditions, such as accompanying him on a supply convoy to Paucris Major, where the rebels were refurbishing their ships. Bail angrily retorted that he would not use Leia as a skifter in a sabacc deck and that if Breha would, he was unsure if he had ever truly known her. Breha was hurt by his words, and Bail, shocked at having uttered them, left the library and departed for Coruscant later that night.
For the following days, Breha was saddened and angered, even snapping at 2V on one occasion, though she immediately apologized. She wandered the palace wearing her robes rather than her formal attire and with her hair disheveled. Despite her own feelings, Breha encouraged Leia to return to Coruscant to attend the ball being hosted at the Imperial Palace, stating that their home would always be theirs, but Leia would only have the opportunity to attend this ball once.
A few days later, while Breha was preparing for a medal ceremony on Alderaan, Leia interrupted to inform them via holo call that Tarkin had discovered the rebels' location on Paucris, where Bail was currently stationed, and was en route to apprehend them. Leia was the only one available, so she was compelled to leave to warn Bail and the other rebels of the Empire's approach. Although both her daughter and husband were in danger, Breha was helpless and had to attend the medal ceremony, as canceling it would raise suspicion. Leia, with Holdo's assistance, successfully warned Bail and the others, and Breha welcomed them upon their return.

Later in that same year, Leia formally entered her parents' rebellion. Following the successful completion of her three trials, she was crowned crown princess of Alderaan. One of these trials, the Challenge of the Body, involved Breha accompanying her on a climb up Appenza Peak, mirroring Breha's own experience at sixteen. During their ascent, Breha, clad in military-grade all-terrain attire, paused to wipe sweat from her brow and take a drink. She remarked to Leia that the view was even more breathtaking than she remembered, expressing regret for not having done it sooner, but also acknowledging that perhaps it was best shared with Leia. Leia inquired about the location of Breha's past accident. Breha responded that they had already passed the area, though she couldn't pinpoint the exact spot, describing it as "something of a blur," as she thought Leia could imagine. When Leia suggested that reaching their current altitude was enough to declare the challenge complete, Breha raised an eyebrow, clarifying that Leia hadn't earned the summit yet, since she had to make the ascent fair and clean. She emphasized that the often-overlooked aspect of mountain climbing is that the descent is even more challenging. Sitting down cross-legged, Breha explained that they treated their challenges—during their lessons—as things they mastered to achieve their goals, but that sometimes the most important lessons in life have to do with what happens when they fail: how do they know when to surrender and walk away? How do they judge their own part in their failures? 'Is it something to learn from or just bad luck?' And how do they pick themselves up again afterward? As Leia gazed towards the horizon, where the palace was located, Breha imparted the profound lesson that Leia was learning how to fall.
Donning pristine white attire, Breha and Bail stood together in the traditional ceremony marking Leia's ascension to crown princess of Alderaan. Mon Mothma, Ress Batten, Amilyn Holdo, and Chassellon Stevis were present, reciting the customary words, affirming that Leia had demonstrated remarkable strength and spirit in completing her challenges, proving herself worthy in "all ways." Breha, alongside Leia and Bail, held the Rhindon Sword as they placed the Heir's Crown upon Leia's head. Breha then declared her daughter's investiture as crown princess and heir to the Alderaanian throne, prompting a wave of applause and cheers. Eventually, Princess Leia took her father's place in the Senate and aligned herself with the Alliance.
Shortly after the events of the Battle of Scarif in 0 BBY, Darth Vader, unaware of Leia's true parentage, captured the princess. She had been involved in the theft of the plans for the Death Star, the Empire's planet-destroying battle station. Leia was imprisoned aboard the Death Star and subjected to interrogation, aimed at revealing the location of the Rebel base—the Great Temple on Yavin 4. Meanwhile, Breha was anxiously awaiting her husband's return from Yavin 4. With Visaiya's support, Breha kept busy with her daily schedule. As her worry grew, the queen requested that Visaiya cancel all of her remaining appointments for the day. Increasingly concerned about her family, Breha told Visaiya that Captain Anderam had asked her to stop raising him. When Visaiya asked if she could go and keep watch, Breha explained that Captain Anderam had asked not to be disturbed. Breha decided to rest, but was approached by her daughter's attendant droid, WA-2V, who asked if Leia preferred silk or satin for the upcoming equinox in three weeks. Breha, however, responded by asking that she not be disturbed. The Minister of Finance, Lintreyst, and her daughter's old tutor droid, CZ-7OB, then followed the queen into the royal apartment, seeking an audience. Meanwhile, Breha told Visaiya there was hardly a credit in the budget to spare on the gown, then told Lintreyst that resources for the gala were allocated months ago, and then 2V to bring one of her gowns from storage. She then allowed 2V to fetch a crystal for Leia's gown, as well as allowing CZ-70B to follow her into her private apartment.

From her private quarters, the queen observed the sun setting over the Juran Mountains. CZ-70B then alerted the queen to a discrepancy in Leia's diplomatic records, which falsely indicated that the princess was fluent in both Huttese and Shyriiwook. The droid clarified that the princess was only proficient in Shyriiwook, and that such an error could potentially cause her embarrassment. Breha reassured him that it was not his fault, adding that she could not imagine a scenario in which Leia would need to be fluent in Shyriiwook. CZ-70B then informed the queen that Leia had altered the record herself. Breha commented that such an action sounded just like her daughter, and then sent CZ-70B to fix the record.
Upon his return to Alderaan, Bail was greeted by Breha, who immediately inquired about the validity of the Scarif rumors. Despite Bail's attempts to allay her fears, Breha revealed that the Emperor had dissolved the Imperial Senate, prompting him to inform her of the Tantive IV's alleged destruction. Terrified, Breha suggested sending a squadron to investigate the wreckage, but Bail assured her that he had already dispatched one to search for the Tantive IV, cautioning her that they were now at war. He stated that their personal loss would have to be weighed against the Alliance's needs, but Breha refused to give up hope. Bail warned her that the war had just begun and that it would be fought by Leia when they found her, explaining to his wife that they could not risk sending another ship because the Tantive IV had already been caught. Refusing to do nothing, Breha contacted Captain Anderam.

Two days later, during a briefing with the Alderaanian generals, the Organas were contacted by Captain Anderam, who reported the arrival of a massive object in orbit. As communication lines failed, Bail led his wife outside, where they witnessed the Death Star looming in Alderaan's sky. Organa immediately recognized the Empire's planet-destroying superweapon, horrifying Breha. Breha then tried to tell Bail ways they could escape and save as many Alderaanians as they could, but the Death Star fired, causing Bail pull her into his arms. As the ripple of destruction reached them, the two reassured each other that Leia was alive.
Unbeknownst to the Organas, Leia had refused to divulge the location of the rebel's hidden base. In response, Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin, commander of the Death Star and Governor of the Outer Rim Territories, threatened to obliterate Alderaan unless she complied. The princess provided a false location, and despite Tarkin's initial trust, the Grand Moff ultimately chose to target Alderaan. The Empire considered it a hub of rebellious activity, and Tarkin believed its destruction would serve as a powerful demonstration of the station's capabilities.
As Leia was walked away from the overbridge on the Death Star, and back to her cell where she was being held, her mother was amongst the things she thought of that she realized were now gone that she would do anything to bring back including trading herself.
Following the planet's annihilation, an event that off-world Alderaanians began referring to as "the Disaster," the Rebel Alliance successfully destroyed the Death Star during the Battle of Yavin. With Breha Organa's death, many Alderaanian survivors regarded Leia as their queen, despite the loss of their home world. One such individual was Evaan Verlaine, a former student of Breha, who addressed her as such upon their meeting.

In memory of the royal couple, statues of the Queen and Viceroy were erected at the Rebel base on Yavin 4. Numerous individuals paid their respects, leaving wreaths at the base of the statues.
During a ceremony commemorating the Rebellion's victory, during which two of the Heroes of Yavin received Medals of Bravery, also known as the Medal of Alderaan, Leia requested that those present honor the Alderaanian lives lost, including her adoptive parents. Some attendees found Leia's speech lacking in emotion, leading to her nickname, "the Ice Princess."
Among those present at the ceremony was Miara Larte, who had been off-world during Alderaan's destruction. She and her Alderaanian crew were given a place of privilege at the front. Miara observed that Leia possessed the same captivating presence as her mother and the gentle demeanor of her father. Despite hearing Leia described as cold, Miara found no fault in her reserved demeanor, recognizing that the rebellion demanded everything of the princess and that it wasn't her place to criticize her if she wanted to grieve in private. Miara also remembered the ceremony formalized by Breha when she was promoted to captain.
Evaan was also in attendance and she shh'd two individuals who were speaking during Leia's speech and, likewise, paid her respects to the royals in front of the statues. As Leia coped with her loss in a way that made her seem indifferent, Evaan resented the princess for not mourning her parents properly, and called her an 'Ice Princess' and claimed that if she couldn't cry for her subjects then she could have at least cried for the loss of her father. She also suggested that Leia wasn't paying proper respect to the loss of her parents and claiming that she was frost blooded.
Despite this, Evaan pledged her loyalty to the princess, bowing before her despite Leia's protests. Evaan even shared her past as Breha's student, before the two departed Yavin 4 on a mission to rescue Alderaanian survivors from the Empire's reach. Eventually, Breha's chalcedony waves were bestowed upon the Sullustan Nien Nunb as a reward for his assistance in evacuating Alderaanians from Sullust.

A starship used by the Rebel Alliance was named the Breha. Between 0 ABY and 3 ABY, Leia and Luke Skywalker utilized the ship on a mission to the aquatic planet Tibrin, where they posed as members of the Naboo House Berenko to negotiate a trade agreement. The Breha was later destroyed by Imperials during the mission, but Leia and Skywalker managed to escape.
Between 0 ABY and 1 ABY, while with Skywalker on a ocean planet, Leia recalled when she believed her parents were going to arrange a marriage for her so she hid in the woods for a week, recalling it as the best week of her life.
In 4 ABY, following an Alliance meeting to discuss the approval of Operation Yellow Moon, Princess Leia and Mon Mothma discussed Leia's reluctance to leave the Alliance to rescue her love Han Solo, who had been frozen in carbonite and was being held by Jabba the Hutt as a wall decoration on the wall of his palace. During the conversation, Mothma told Leia that she was Bail and Breha's "greatest joy" and that the love they shared was what sustained them through the dark years. She then told Leia not to deny herself another chance at love because of what the Empire did to them, not to give Palpatine that victory too. Mothma then approved Operation Yellow Moon but said that Leia was to tell her anything she needed. Finally, Mothma told Leia to come back "safe and sound" as losing her would be unbearable to Mothma and many others.

Leia once referred to Han as a "scoundrel," a term Breha had previously used, telling her daughter that it does do a girl good to fall for every now and then. But when Leia later remarked that she wished that Han had met her parents, he joked that he didn't need their disapproval.
When Leia announced her and Han's engagement to Mon Mothma shortly after the Battle of Endor, Mothma said she only wished that Bail and Breha could be there, causing Leia to remember the conversation she'd had with her mother about the Rhindon Sword and her eventual marriage shortly before her Day of Demand, Leia then thought of the little things lost to her because of Alderaan's destruction and how it meant that her mother would never attach the Rhindon Sword to her waist. Later, during the wedding ceremony, the wedding officiant, Luke Skywalker, Leia's twin brother, asked for a moment of silence for those who couldn't join in the festivities. When Leia thought of Bail and Breha she felt as though someone was placing the Rhindon Sword on her waist. Though it was not real she felt certain that her mother had strapped it to her waist.
While Leia was on the ice moon Madurs, during her honeymoon, Leia noticed the attention her honeymoon was garnering from the press, though Leia knew that the only thing people loved more than a hero was a fallen hero. This reminded Leia of her mother's fall from Appenza Peak with Leia knowing that the greater her happiness rose the harder she would fall.
The galaxy eventually learned that Leia was the biological daughter of Darth Vader, through a music box that Leia kept in her keepsake chest. Bail had stored a recorded message of himself, telling Leia of her heritage. Once the keepsake chest and music box had been returned to her, Leia listened to the rest of her father's message, that hadn't been played before the Senate, where he said that his and Breha's love for Leia would endure past their deaths and that they would forever be by her side, in her brightest triumphs and darkest troubles.
A collection of documents pertaining to Queen Breha were archived at the Alderaan Memorial on Coruscant, including the letter in which she learned of little Leia's pending arrival. Breha was also prominently featured in a biography of Leia Organa written during the conflict between the Resistance and the First Order.

Breha Organa was a human female with tan skin, black hair, and brown eyes. Her hair began to grey in later years. After her Day of Demand at age sixteen, Breha's torso would often appear to be glowing due to the light emanating from the uncovered pulmonodes.
Shortly after the Clone Wars, she wore a blue metallic gown with slit sleeves and a collar adorned with a gold buckle-like brooch. When she wore that gown, the queen braided a golden fabric into her hair, wrapped it around her head, and put on a semi-transparent blue shawl. In informal settings Breha wore simple velvet robes and let her hair down.
Breha was known for her intelligence and diplomatic skills. She ruled Alderaan with kindness and fairness, earning the love of her people and responding swiftly to crises.
Education was of utmost importance to her. She personally tutored several students, in addition to her royal duties. While Bail worked to build the loose underground network of cells that would eventually become the Rebel Alliance, Breha mentored several students including Evaan Verlaine. Breha also ensured that Leia was prepared for the future to be a ruler in her own right.

Breha often tried to teach Leia about the divide between herself and others many times telling her, starting from when Leia was too young to understand how their happy home could ever be lonely, that 'the palace could be an isolated place' and though they had many privileges they had to make sacrifices too and they had to bear their burdens on their own. Though, she reassured Leia that she would get to choose her own spouse when the time came. She also told Leia to follow her instincts while Bail sometimes told Leia that she made up her mind too quickly about people. Leia chose to take Breha's advice when deciding to not let Amilyn Holdo handle her ropes during their pathfinding class. She also told Leia to more than wave, when the ten year old princess once complained that that was all she ever did, and that she should get out what she put into it. Breha also told Leia that it did do a girl good to fall for "a bit of a scoundrel, now and then" a word Leia later used to describe Han Solo, who she later married.
Like her husband, Breha deeply cared for her daughter. When Leia was kidnapped as a child, Breha initially kept her unaware of their involvement with the rebellion, believing it was the best way to protect her. However, Breha eventually realized that Leia needed to be involved in the fight against the Empire and tried to convince her husband to let her become slowly integrated into the Alliance.
Though she was raised by her mother to cherish peace, she was "no fool" and knew that Palpatine's reign couldn't end without further violence as well as a rebellion on a large scale and tried to get others like her husband to realize that as well, however she didn't approve of the extreme methods of Saw Gerrera such as the assassination of Quarsh Panaka saying that his judgment was faulty, though she was relieved that his death meant that he couldn't pass on the truth of Leia's heritage to Palpatine.

It was said that Breha Organa did not need a crown or jewels to command attention, draw attention, or appear every bit a queen. Following a mercy mission to Wobani where a hundred Wobani citizens were unexpectedly brought back to Alderaan, Breha greeted them at the Aldera spaceport with an entourage of medical personnel, social workers and the like to help them. This caused the citizens to cheer for her and Ress Batten to note that the queen "pulls her act together pretty quick," causing Breha's daughter, Leia, to claim that her act is "always together" and she was "born with it together." This was something Leia both admired and envied about her mother.
Breha would also say, although royalty no longer wasted money on finery, that it was silly not to use a perfectly good bed, or tiara, or palace which was why Leia still used her bed, an artifact of a grand age made from Glee Anselm hardwoods and inlaid with pure silver and gold.
Breha had a way of speaking to her husband without using words. They had such a perfect understanding at times Leia would think that they wouldn't need to talk at all and it took her a long time to realize that not all spouses were like this and that not everyone found the kind of love that was "like sharing souls."
Unbeknownst to most people, including her daughter, Breha Organa mastered several forms of hand-to-hand fighting, and she mentored a group of selected pupils in combat. Breha was also fairly skilled at mountain climbing, having scaled Appenza Peak for her Challenge of the Body, though she did fall down off it later, and doing so again as her daughter's companion, for Leia's own Challenge of the Body, several years later.
Breha was skilled at accounting and had charge of the royal books, balancing the many accounts and personally overseeing the funding of all public works on Alderaan. She later used this in order to secretly funnel money towards the growing rebellion.
Breha also planted Malastarian orchids, and her daughter later learned to plant and care for orchids.

Breha Organa usually wore long gowns, including a blue and bronze slash-sleeved gown that mirrored the beautiful oceans and tranquil valleys of Alderaan. She at one point also owned the chalcedony waves, which she eventually passed down to her daughter, who wore them during the Royal Award Ceremony on Yavin 4. Breha's state wardrobe also included a dress made of bronze silk, which she wore with her hair piled high atop her head, in braids that were woven through with strings of beads, which she wore for her daughter's Day of Demand.
When greeting Padmé Amidala for the first time, in the palace throne room, Organa wore the Crown of Alderaan, which was woven into the braid that twisted up on the top of her head, and a high-necked gown of silver and blue, with a wide skirt and a flat reinforced bodice, that covered her pulmonodes.
When Breha greeted Leia and the refugees that she had brought back from Wobani, at the Aldera spaceport, she wore a long gown of russet silk and blue velvet with ribbons of each fabric braided into an elaborate hairstyle.
Breha also wore a red silk wrapper, a green dress with wide skirts, and a deep red silk robe, on less formal occasions, usually with her hair down.

"Queen Breha" initially materialized within George Lucas's 1974 first draft of what eventually became Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. Within that narrative, she was the spouse of King Kayos from Aquilae, and also served as the mother to a spoiled, fourteen-year-old Princess Leia. Inside this initial 132-page story outline, Breha was depicted as "a warm, silver-haired matron." Leia's maternal figure was ultimately omitted from the final cinematic release on May 25, 1977. However, in 2013, Lucas's early draft was transformed into a non-canon comic book series titled The Star Wars. This series showcased Breha of Aquilae, with artwork by Mike Mayhew that bore a resemblance to a concept drawing of Princess Leia in Cloud City, originally created by Ralph McQuarrie for Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back.
Lucas revived the character early during the making of Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, which was the third movie in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. In December 2002, he let his production team know that Princess Leia's adoptive mother would be in the film. He portrayed her as a trustworthy and peaceful woman in her mid-thirties, and illustrator Iain McCaig created several conceptual artworks based on this description. In one drawing, McCaig gave Breha features similar to Padmé Amidala, attempting to explain how Leia could recall seeing her mother's smile. In another concept art piece, McCaig aimed to capture the likeness of his wife, Leonor.

Breha Organa made her first appearance on screen in Revenge of the Sith in May 2005, portrayed by Australian actress and singer Rebecca Jackson Mendoza. Despite being a fan of the original trilogy, Jackson Mendoza didn't immediately grasp the importance of her role within the Star Wars universe. Her excitement grew when her brothers explained that the Queen was actually Princess Leia's adoptive mother. Rebecca Jackson Mendoza recalled watching the original trilogy as a child, wishing she could be Princess Leia. With all of this in mind, Jackson Mendoza began to view the part as a significant accomplishment. Andrea Wagner-Barton, the wife of editor Roger Barton, acted as a stand-in for Jackson Mendoza in the scene where Breha holds Leia, since their infant son Aidan was playing Leia, although Rebecca did portray Breha in the scene when Bail hands Leia to her.
A singular robe, referred to as the "Alderaan Palace Dress" in Dressing a Galaxy: The Costumes of Star Wars, was designed for Jackson Mendoza by Trisha Biggar, who served as the costume designer for all three prequel movies. Jackson Mendoza likened this robe to a "green wedding gown." Initially, it was intended to be made of velvet, but the fabric was changed due to concerns that it might appear too dark on film.

Queen Breha's character was significantly fleshed out in Claudia Gray's 2017 young-adult novel, Leia, Princess of Alderaan. Gray expressed surprise at how little had been written about Breha, considering her crucial role in the Star Wars story as Leia's adoptive mother and a queen at the heart of the Rebellion. Consequently, she was eager to give her a substantial role and personality. In the 2022 live-action television series Obi-Wan Kenobi, Breha is played by Simone Kessell.
Breha is also scheduled to appear alongside her husband Bail in the novel Reign of the Empire: The Mask of Fear, with editor Tom Hoeler confirming her presence before the book's release and playfully stating that it would be unthinkable to feature Bail in a story without his wife. Hoeler noted that, with her more recent appearances, she has become as much a queen to the fans as she is to Bail.
