Aayla Secura

Aayla Secura, originally named Aaylas'ecura, was a Rutian Twi'lek female who achieved the rank of Jedi Master during the Republic's later years. She notably served as a General with distinction throughout the Clone Wars. Her Jedi journey included being a Padawan under the guidance of Quinlan Vos, and before him, Vos's own master, Tholme. Both Secura and Vos faced the dark side early in their Jedi training, but she later demonstrated her worthiness for knighthood.

The Clone Wars erupted after Secura's promotion to Jedi Knight, leading her to participate in the First Battle of Geonosis along with many other Jedi. She fought in numerous campaigns, surviving well-known battles such as those on Hypori and Kamino. Her accomplishments were so significant that she was elevated to the rank of Jedi Master relatively early in the war.

In her role as a Jedi Master, Aayla Secura spearheaded Republic military efforts at Quell and played a crucial role in the defense of Kamino, and subsequently, Maridun. Despite her undeniable skill, Secura's life ended during the execution of Order 66 on Felucia. The people of the worlds she aided throughout her life remembered Master Secura for generations, with stories of her becoming integrated into the cultures of many.

Biography

Early life

Aayla Secura, or Aaylas'ecura in her native tongue, was born around 48 BBY. She was a blue-skinned, female Rutian Twi'lek, and a member of the prominent Clan Secura on Ryloth, her homeworld.

A young Secura and her savior

In 46 BBY, during a mission on Ryloth, Quinlan Vos, a young Kiffar Padawan under Jedi Master Tholme, discovered that the two-year-old Secura possessed a strong connection to the Force. Although she was the niece of clan member Lon Secura, the young Secura had been sold into slavery to a Hutt crime lord. During Tholme and Vos's visit, the Hutt's newly-acquired guard wampa escaped and began to cause havoc, putting Secura in immediate danger. Fortunately, she unconsciously projected her distress through the Force, which Quinlan Vos sensed and used to save her. This event forged a powerful bond between them, leading Vos to convince Master Tholme to test Secura for potential training as a Jedi on Coruscant. Secura then became a member of the Jedi Order, where she spent years training under Master Tholme. Around the age of ten, Quinlan Vos took her on as his Padawan.

On her thirteenth birthday, Vos gifted Secura a Heart of Fire, a radiant stone from his home planet of Kiffu. She later passed this gift to Xiaan Amersu, a fellow Twi'lek Padawan with whom Secura felt a connection. Secura once learned a profound lesson when her beloved pet, T'da, died. Her master consoled her by explaining that her pet was now part of the Force and would continue to live on in her heart. Ironically, she buried T'da on Felucia, the same planet where her own life would later come to an abrupt end.

Padawan Secura and her Master, Quinlan Vos, collaborated on numerous missions. They unraveled the Mystery of the Lodi on Solibus IV, rescued a young princess from skyboat pirates on Xoman III, and confronted the terbeasts of Ogden Minor. Additionally, Vos shared the story of the Stark Hyperspace War, a conflict between the Galactic Republic and the pirate Iaco Stark, in which he participated as a Padawan. While Qui-Gon Jinn was stranded on the desert planet Tatooine in 32 BBY, Secura and Vos conducted undercover operations there.

Later, Vos and Secura were dispatched to Ryloth to investigate the source of the drug glitteryll. To conceal their involvement, Secura's uncle, Pol Secura, and Vos's clanmate, Asanté Vos, captured and drugged the two Jedi, causing them to lose their memories. Vos was left on the moon Nar Shaddaa, while Secura was held on Ryloth by her uncle, who administered daily doses of glitteryll to prevent her memories from returning. She forgot her identity as a Jedi, her master, and her Force powers.

Quinlan Vos, in search of his Padawan, found Pol Secura's location. He presented her lightsaber to her, but it failed to restore her memory. Discovering Pol Secura's role in the drugging, Vos demanded the identity of Chom Frey Kaa, his patron in the glitteryll scheme. When Pol Secura refused, Vos used the Force to strangle him with his own lekku and electrocute him with Force lightning. In an attempt to defend her uncle, the amnesiac Secura lashed out with the Force, inadvertently Force pushing him off a balcony to his death. Secura fled, blaming the unfamiliar Quinlan Vos for her uncle's death.

Brush with the dark side

Secura is seduced to the dark side of the Force by Volfe Karkko.

Seeking vengeance against Quinlan Vos, Secura concealed herself on a pirate ship bound for Kiffex, the prison world and twin planet of Kiffu. There, she discovered and freed Volfe Karkko, a Dark Jedi, from his stasis field. Succumbing to the dark side of the Force, she agreed to aid the Anzati Dark Jedi. He placed her in command of his Anzati minions and tasked her with hunting down the Jedi he had lured to Kiffex—Vos, Tholme, and the wandering Master Zao. Karkko needed them alive to replenish his strength by consuming their "Jedi-soup." However, he first needed to feed himself and his Anzati. Secura led the Anzati in an assault on a local stronghold, where she confronted the Jedi and successfully captured their people. Vos tracked her down and reached Karkko's prison. She battled her former master once more, but finally regained her true identity. At that moment, Karkko used Force lightning to incapacitate her. Upon awakening, she found Karkko dead.

After leaving Kiffex for Kiffu, the Jedi met with a delegation from the Jedi High Council—Masters Mace Windu, Adi Gallia, and Plo Koon. Due to the darkness that had touched both Secura and Vos, the councilors reassigned Secura to Tholme to complete her training. While she, Tholme, and the councilors returned to Coruscant, Vos decided to follow the Force, leaving Kiffex to become "a leaf blown forth by the wind."

Return to Coruscant

During the journey aboard the councilors' starship, the Intrepid, Plo Koon utilized his telepathic powers to assist Secura in organizing and processing her newly recovered memories, allowing her to recall her past adventures with Quinlan Vos. Secura noticed the scarred face of Jace Dallin, a crewmember of the Intrepid, which was a result of the Stark Hyperspace War. To explain, Dallin, Tholme, and the councilors, all veterans of the Stark war, shared their memories of the conflict, replacing Secura's lost recollections of Vos's account.

Upon her return to Coruscant, Secura sought guidance from Grand Master Yoda. He expressed his relief at her recovery, while she admitted her fear of still being lost. Master Tholme had informed Yoda of everything that had happened to Aayla, and Yoda advised her not to judge herself harshly. She confessed that something was now missing from her life. Yoda advised her to be patient and remember that she was a Jedi. He also emphasized that the Force guides them toward what they need, not always what they desire. Still feeling uncertain, Yoda offered one final piece of advice: to trust that the Force was with her and would guide her.

Ascension to Knighthood

Jedi Knight Aayla Secura and Jedi Master Quinlan Vos

As Tholme's Padawan, Secura went undercover to infiltrate the Twi'lek clan Fenn. She discovered that Ro Fenn, the clan's leader, was planning an attack on Nat Secura, the male heir of the Secura clan. She alerted Tholme and joined her master to combat this new threat. During a confrontation with two Nikto Morgukai, Tholme was defeated but managed to escape onto their ship. However, he was discovered and imprisoned. Secura followed Vilmarh Grahrk, who was allied with the Nikto, to his ship, the Inferno, but the Devaronian escaped.

The Force led Secura to a junkyard on Ord Mantell. There, she encountered her former master, Vos, and assisted him in fighting off bounty hunters. She explained everything that had happened to Quinlan, and they decided to rescue Nat Secura and Master Tholme. They successfully tracked down Grahrk and convinced him to reveal the location of the two Morgukai. The Nikto had left Ord Mantell for Kintan, the home planet of the Nikto and the site of the fortress of Kh'aris Fenn, the Twi'lek who had orchestrated the clan's current turmoil.

Vos and Secura on Ord Mantell

They quickly traveled to Kintan and confronted the two Morgukai, Bok and his father, Tsyr, who were waiting for the Jedi. After escaping their pursuers at a river of lava, the two Jedi infiltrated the fortress, only to be confronted by the Nikto again. Secura was tasked with rescuing Nat Secura and Tholme, while Vos would fight the Nikto.

Secura reached the dungeon, defeated the torture droid AX/RX, freed Tholme and Nat, and went to Vos's aid. Vos had already beheaded Tsyr but had been knocked to the ground by Bok. Secura saved Vos's life by engaging Bok before he could deliver the final blow. She wounded the Nikto, severing his right hand, but refrained from killing him. Bok chose to fall hundreds of meters to his death to preserve his honor. The three Jedi and Nat survived. They returned the young Twi'lek boy to his father, but Fenn managed to escape from Ryloth to Count Dooku's hidden stronghold. Ro Fenn, now facing Twi'lek justice, was banished to the Bright Lands, the perpetually sunlit side of Ryloth, from which there was no return. Back on Coruscant, the Jedi High Council promoted both Secura and Vos. Secura was granted the rank of Jedi Knight, and Vos was made a Jedi Master. In 28 BBY, shortly before the promotion, Tholme documented Vos's recent history, highlighting his rescue of Secura as one of his accomplishments.

Secura represented the Jedi Order during the inspection and unveiling of the corporation's Delta-7 Aethersprite-class light interceptor at the Kuat Drive Yards. After confirming the starfighter's satisfactory testing performance, Secura and Adi Gallia performed a ceremonial lightsaber salute in honor of the Kuati's, which was recorded and reported on by the "Jedi Watch" segment of HoloNet News Vol. 531 #47, published on 13:3:14 GrS.

Clone Wars (22 BBY–19 BBY)

Aayla Secura during the Clone Wars

Battle of Geonosis

Aayla Secura was present in the Jedi Temple when the First Battle of Geonosis began. Consequently, she became a member of the Jedi task force, consisting of 200 Jedi, dispatched to Geonosis to rescue Obi-Wan Kenobi, his Padawan Anakin Skywalker, and Senator Padmé Amidala of Naboo, who were being held captive and scheduled for public execution in the Petranaki arena.

Actively participating in the battle, Secura was among the roughly thirty Jedi who survived the clash between the forces of the Confederacy of Independent Systems and the Jedi strike team. During the conflict, she eliminated a super battle droid with a kick to the face, while Sarrissa Jeng dealt with a nearby Geonosian warrior. As the Separatists gained the upper hand, Secura and the other survivors were forced into a circle in the center of the arena at gunpoint. The timely arrival of Grand Master Yoda, leading the newly formed Grand Army of the Republic, saved Secura and the others from certain death. Secura and the survivors were evacuated on several gunships, and she proceeded to lead her own squad of clone troopers in the escalating ground battle. This battle marked the beginning of the wider conflict known as the Clone Wars.

Secura developed a lasting friendship with Darrus Jeht and gifted him a custom blaster, jokingly suggesting that he wouldn't need it if he were as skilled a Jedi as she was. During the Clone Wars, she visited him and his companion Trilinae Untaire on Cularin. Although Secura expressed concern that Jeht's obsession with his extensive collection of personal starships contradicted the Jedi Code's stance against personal possessions, she enthusiastically helped repair his antique starship, the Legacy, upon discovering that he had secured backstage passes for a concert by Sien'Soro, a band that both Secura and Untaire enjoyed.

Mission to Corellia

Like nearly every other fully trained Jedi in the Order, Secura became a Jedi General. Eight standard days after the Battle of Geonosis, she was dispatched on a mission to Corellia to intercept Ratri Tane, a scientist from the Techno Union, who had escaped to Corellia with files and a prototype for new droid circuitry. She was accompanied by Ylenic It'kla, a fellow Caamasi Jedi.

Infiltrating the Wheel

Secura fights Zenex on The Wheel

Less than a standard month later, Secura infiltrated the Wheel, disguising herself as a struggling mechanic named Jayzaa, to locate Quinlan Vos, who had not reported back from his undercover mission since the Battle of Geonosis. Together, they obtained a copy of the plans for the impending Confederacy attack on Kamino. With the assistance of Khaleen Hentz and Tookarti they prevented Zenex, a crime boss, from stealing back the plans. After killing Zenex and his henchmen, Vos informed Secura that he intended to establish spy networks for the Republic.

Battle of Kamino

Aayla Secura later visited Kamino with Master Kit Fisto and prevented the facilities from being sabotaged from within by a Kaminoan nano-virus intended to eliminate the clone troopers. During the final moments of the battle against super battle droids controlled by a treacherous Kaminoan, Secura fell into the waters of Kamino and nearly drowned before Fisto rescued her. As an amphibian, the Nautolan was able to absorb oxygen from the water and breathe it into Secura to help her breathe. After resurfacing, they tricked the double-crossing Kaminoan into injecting herself with the virus, killing her. Her collaboration with Fisto, a fellow veteran of Geonosis, and his ability to read lekku—uncommon for a non-Twi'lek—fostered a close relationship between them, which at times pushed the boundaries of the Jedi Code.

Aayla Secura talks to Anakin prior to the Battle of Kamino.

After utilizing the intelligence she and Quinlan Vos had gathered, Secura attended a meeting with several Jedi Generals hosted by Obi-Wan Kenobi before the battle on Kamino. There, Oppo Rancisis and Vos explained that the Confederacy needed to attack before they became aware of the Republic forces on Kamino, or they would retreat. Secura was among the Jedi Generals who used their starfighters to lead the flight to intercept the enemy fighters, as the fighters for the clones were not yet ready. Shortly before the battle, Secura found Padawan Anakin Skywalker attempting to repair a droid, claiming that he was meditating while doing so. Secura suggested that he might be trying too hard and that things were not always straightforward. As the Separatist forces arrived, the Jedi prepared to fly, with Secura engaging in the initial strike with her Jedi starfighter and successfully defending the cloning facilities.

Battle of Hypori

Aayla Secura fights Grievous with her Jedi allies on Hypori.

Later in the conflict, Secura achieved the esteemed title of Jedi Master. Concurrently, this Twi'lek Jedi, alongside fellow Jedi Masters Daakman Barrek, Ki-Adi-Mundi, Shaak Ti, K'Kruhk, participated in the Battle of Hypori, where she was among those who lived through their initial confrontation with General Grievous. Grievous, using his feet, seized Secura and the deceased Tarr Seirr and hurled them into the ceiling. This attack left her with severe injuries, and she was only saved by the timely arrival of a unit of ARC troopers. Following this perilous mission, she was assigned to the 327th Star Corps, subsequently developing a strong bond with Commander Bly. Subsequently, Secura, along with Jedi Agen Kolar and Voolvif Monn, found themselves surrounded by LM-432 crab droids and ensnared by bubble wort projectors in the midst of battle, only to be rescued and liberated by Anakin Skywalker, who had by then become a Jedi Knight.

Battle of Quell

After securing a crucial Separatist tactical droid, Secura and Commander Bly were tasked with spearheading an offensive on the planet Quell.

While her vessels were under siege by B2 Rocket droids, Jedi Anakin Skywalker and his Padawan Ahsoka Tano appeared and provided assistance to Bly and Secura in evacuating the devastated Republic Cruiser.

The Jedi and the Clones managed to eliminate a significant portion of the droids on her ship, but they were ambushed by a substantial force of Super Battle droids, compelling them to retreat towards Skywalker's vessel. However, an explosion erupted behind the pursuing droids. Skywalker, noticing this in advance, used the Force to propel Secura, Tano, and several other clones into the ship's entrance and attempted to employ the Force to halt the explosion, but his efforts were unsuccessful, resulting in serious injuries. Fortunately, Tano and Secura came to his rescue. Before the Jedi could board the Resolute to provide Skywalker with medical care, fire from droid fighters disabled one of the pilots, inadvertently activating the hyperdrive. Secura instructed Admiral Wullf Yularen to elevate the Resolute to a higher altitude to prevent the cruiser from being dragged along.

Battle of Maridun

Aayla Secura on Maridun

Following a hazardous journey through hyperspace, the Jedi and the surviving clones crash-landed on the planet Maridun. After their arrival, Secura and Tano led Bly and the remaining troopers (excluding Rex, who was guarding Anakin during the night) in a search for assistance. They discovered a depiction of a tree, prompting them to seek it out, but several enormous pods descended from above. Secura observed that other pods had been dragged away. Secura deduced that the entities responsible for dragging the pods were sentient beings and speculated that they might be able to assist Anakin. The group tracked the trails and were attacked by a pair of mastiff phalones, with only Bly, Tano, and Secura surviving the encounter. The following morning, they stumbled upon a village inhabited by Lurmen who had established a settlement on the planet, seeking refuge from the war. The village elder, Tee Watt Kaa, declined to offer assistance, fearing that destruction would disrupt their hard-won peace. However, at Tano's urging, he provided them with medical supplies and assigned his son, Wag Too, to help deliver them. He stipulated that only one Jedi should transport the supplies and that Bly should accompany them. The Jedi consented to this arrangement, and Tano and Bly departed to retrieve Anakin, while the injured Jedi received treatment. During her stay in the Lurmen village, Secura engaged in conversation with Kaa regarding the circumstances of the settlers' arrival on Maridun, learning that the Lurmen had abandoned the starship on which they had arrived to escape the native Amanin. The Jedi expressed surprise at the Lurmen's willingness to strand themselves on the foreign world, which the elder attributed to his people's unwavering commitment to the principles of pacifism.

Subsequently, an army of droids, commanded by General Lok Durd, landed on Maridun and, upon encountering Tee Watt Kaa, claimed the planet in the name of the Separatists. The Jedi and the clones resolved to evacuate the village to prevent the droids from harming the Lurmen. They departed but decided to commandeer a Separatist vessel to escape Maridun. They were trailed by a spy droid, but they destroyed it before it could transmit information about their plans to the Separatists. The team ascended a tree and observed a Separatist fort, where Durd was testing a novel weapon that annihilated life forms while leaving machines intact. Following the successful test, the Separatist army advanced towards the Lurmen village. The Jedi and the clones launched a raid on the fort that night, seizing a ship and two shield generators. They then returned to the village. They offered their assistance, which Tee Watt Kaa declined, but they proceeded to fortify the village nonetheless. The Separatists arrived at the village and attempted to deploy their new weapon, but the shield generators effectively neutralized its effects. They then deployed the droids. Secura and her allies decimated the initial wave, but the subsequent group breached their defenses and destroyed the shield generators. Secura and Tano dealt with them while Skywalker dismantled the new weapon. Following the battle, Wag Too expressed gratitude to the Jedi for saving the village, and Kaa acknowledged that the Lurmen were indebted to the Jedi for their lives. Finally, three Jedi cruisers materialized and rescued Secura, Tano, Skywalker, Rex, and Bly.

Mission to Alzoc III

Aayla Secura and Luminara Unduli face off against Asajj Ventress.

Later, Secura, accompanied by Jedi Master Luminara Unduli and Clone Commanders Bly and Gree, embarked on a mission to investigate the planet Alzoc III, where Separatist activity had been reported by the Hutt crime lord Jabba Desilijic Tiure. The Republic squad deployed several All Terrain Tactical Enforcers and proceeded towards the coordinates provided by Jabba. En route, the walkers were compelled to ascend a vertical cliff, and when a walker's path was obstructed by a mass of ice, Bly promptly ordered his men to detonate it. However, Secura intervened, instructing them to hold their fire, asserting that the explosion could trigger the collapse of the entire cliff, and proceeded to remove the obstacle with greater precision. Upon reaching their destination, both the Jedi and the clone troopers beheld the wreckage of a large capital ship and were astonished by the sight of immense ice formations and numerous starship components floating freely in the air. Resolving to investigate the unusual phenomena, the clone troopers utilized their jetpacks to reach the remnants of the ship's hangar, while the Jedi employed the Force to navigate through the debris. Converging at the hangar, the group was attacked by a Vulture droid, underscoring the Separatists' interest in the crash site. Unduli and Secura swiftly neutralized the droid and instructed the clones to scout ahead and locate the ship's data recorder, while they themselves engaged the battle droids and pursued an alternate route.

Upon reaching the remains of the ship's bridge, Gree commenced the process of slicing the vessel's data recorder, while the Jedi and the clone troopers shielded him from the attacking droids. After successfully neutralizing the battle droids, Gree gained access to the record of the ship's final moments. It became apparent that an individual had utilized a Telgorn dropship to board a Munificent-class star frigate carrying two classified weapons, pilfered one of them, and then departed shortly before the frigate was struck by an explosion. The vessel had then crashed on the planet, where the weapon generated a gravity anomaly. Soon, it was also revealed that the Dark Acolyte Asajj Ventress had already visited the crash site and initiated the self-destruct sequence of the frigate's remains. Unduli and Secura ordered the clone troopers to evacuate to safety and then briefly engaged Ventress in a duel. The two Jedi trapped the Dark Jedi beneath a mass of ice before departing the crash site and reporting their findings to the Jedi High Council.

Aayla Secura and Yoda attempt to distract the Zillo beast.

Distracting the Zillo Beast

After the Zillo Beast escaped from its confinement on Coruscant, it rampaged towards the Senate building and seized the escape craft that Supreme Chancellor Palpatine was using to transport himself, Anakin Skywalker, and Padmé Amidala to safety. Secura joined forces with Yoda to leap onto the beast's back, endeavoring to divert its attention and provide the occupants of the escape craft with sufficient time to flee from the beast's grasp. They succeeded in their endeavor and accompanied the group to safety, shielding them from the cloud of gas released by the toxin-bombs deployed to eliminate the Zillo beast.

During a reconnaissance mission to the Outer Rim, Secura encountered a confrontation between a Separatist frigate and fugitive bounty hunter Shahan Alama's Flarestar-class attack shuttle over the planet Florrum and dispatched a gunship team led by Bly to investigate.

Hunting Attuma Duum

Around 21 BBY, Secura was assigned an escort of elite clone troopers to apprehend the mercenary Attuma Duum on the moon Cavamina Minor. She was betrayed by Duum's operatives, and in the ensuing struggle within the cantina, all of her clones were slain. She fled, and her Delta-7B was shot down. She transmitted a distress signal on channel Delta-622-Echo. She was pursued on foot by Sabat, Duum's chief of security. The Force-sensitive Shon-Ju intervened to rescue her, engaging Sabat and his security droid. Sabat activated his jetpack, leaving Shon-Ju to assist a wounded Secura, who lost consciousness due to her injuries. Secura later awoke alone in Shon-Ju's castle. She explored the castle and found Shon-Ju observing his students. The man recounted his story, detailing his training as a Jedi and his subsequent rejection. Secura prepared to depart to resume her mission, but Shon-Ju urged her to wait, expressing his desire to see Duum brought down and agreeing to accompany her.

The following morning, they commandeered two abandoned bombers to infiltrate Attuma Duum's headquarters. Once aboard, Shon-Ju impulsively used her lightsaber to trigger the alarms. Secura employed her Force powers to subdue the guards, but Sabat seized Shon-Ju as a hostage and compelled her to surrender. After being placed in suspension, Duum visited them but was summoned away to attend to other matters. He had lured two fleets, one from the Republic Navy and the other from the Confederate Navy. While Sabat was distracted, Shon-Ju revealed his intention to kill Duum to humiliate the Jedi, who had failed to capture the mercenary. Shon-Ju then utilized his own Force powers to break free from his restraints and attack Sabat, hurling the latter into a turbine, resulting in his death. Shon-Ju left Secura in her bonds for the moment, informing her that her destiny was in her own hands but that she would not deter him from completing his mission. Shon-Ju then confronted Duum, who revealed his cyborg enhancements. As flames from the damaged base spread near her, Secura tapped into the Force to escape. She arrived in time to intervene, preventing Shon-Ju from finishing off a wounded Duum. Shon-Ju then turned his attack on her, allowing Duum to escape. As the two exchanged blows, Secura had a flashback to a past lesson from Yoda. Shon-Ju lifted her by her lekku, declaring that he would end her life swiftly, but she merely laughed in response, stating that being a Jedi meant accepting one's place. She then used the Force to retrieve her lightsaber and sever Shon-Ju's hands. Shon-Ju lamented that the Jedi kept taking from him and fled in tears into the flames.

With the base collapsing around her, Secura commandeered another bomber to return to Coruscant. There, she met Grand Master Yoda to discuss the outcome of her mission. Yoda consoled her, affirming that Duum's operation had been dismantled and sensing a change within her. She responded that she had discovered something within herself that had been absent. However, she harbored doubts as to whether the change was for the better, as Duum might still be alive. Unbeknownst to her, both Duum and Shon-Ju had indeed survived, with the latter accepting a set of prosthetics.

Mission to Devaron

Later in the war, Secura investigated Separatist raids on Republic supply lines along the Corellian Trade Spine as part of a Jedi task force comprising masters Tholme, T'ra Saa, Kit Fisto, and An'ya Kuro. During the mission, Tholme delivered to Secura a holographic message from Vos in which he claimed to have defected to the Confederacy, a deception orchestrated by his former master as an undercover operation.

When the headquarters of the raiders were pinpointed to the planet Devaron, Secura went undercover as "Tuulaa Doneeta," the spoiled daughter of a Twi'lek shipping magnate. In this guise, she managed to infiltrate Senator Vien'sai'Malloc's apartments as her guest, with Masters Tholme ("Miles Croft") and Kuro ("Saba") posing as her servants. The Senator was the individual who financed the raiders, hoping to profit from both sides of the war. She had employed bounty hunter Aurra Sing, a former Jedi, to ensure that her plans remained secret.

Aayla Secura dueling Aurra Sing on Devaron.

The Jedi on Devaron became Sing's next targets, and after incapacitating her former Master and Tholme, she ambushed Secura. The Twi'lek survived and retaliated against Aurra. The two engaged in combat, and Secura gained the upper hand by striking the bounty hunter where it hurt most: her feelings of abandonment. Aurra responded by unleashing her rage, which caused her to become disoriented, and Secura severed the antenna implant—installed by the hunter's Anzati mentors—that allowed Sing to feed off the fear of her prey. As Sing was consumed by anger, Secura remained at peace and turned the former Padawan over to local authorities. She eventually ended up on the penal colony of Oovo IV. Subsequently, Secura rescued Tholme and Kuro and provided intelligence she had gathered about the raider headquarters to Fisto and Saa, leading to the dissolution of the raiders in a battle between them and Republic forces.

Betrayal on Honoghr

On New Holstice, Secura was informed by Bly of a costly victory over Mandalorian forces and joined Tholme in a Republic hospital. Her former master revealed to Secura that Quinlan Vos had not genuinely betrayed the Jedi Order but was a double agent infiltrating the Separatists to gather intelligence on Dooku, although he feared that Vos had succumbed to the dark side.

Secura during the Battle of Honoghr

She was then dispatched to lead a squad of clones, assisted by Clone Commander Bly, on Honoghr to retrieve the Scientific Instrument Package (SIP) containing all data on a deadly gas developed by the Separatists, which had fallen into the possession of Noghri warriors. She was compelled to fight against the fierce natives when unexpected assistance arrived in the form of her former master, Quinlan Vos. However, after they had recovered the SIP, Quinlan turned against Aayla to deliver her to Dooku. Aayla was once again forced to battle Vos but was defeated. Bly intervened to save her life, shooting Vos and causing him to flee.

Secura and Ki-Adi-Mundi were assigned to a top secret mission on the planet Hitaka for the Supreme Chancellor—a deception designed to divert the Jedi from operations on the world by the Separatists, secretly orchestrated by Palpatine in his Sith persona of Darth Sidious. Secura and Mundi executed their own diversionary tactics, misleading Jedi Knight Anise I'Zak into undertaking a decoy mission while they completed their objective.

Mission to Endor

Secura, with the battle droid, begin their duty to kill the Beast in the Mouth of the Mountain.

Shortly thereafter, Master Secura and Commander Bly investigated an abandoned Separatist outpost in the Endor system. After confirming that the base was deserted (and discovering the remains of numerous clone troopers and battle droids), Secura ventured into the forest alone on a scouting mission, during which she was observed by a lone battle droid. When it attempted to shoot her, she severed its appendages with her lightsaber. While interrogating the droid, Secura was ambushed by the native Ewok people hiding in a tree and was struck by a tranquilliser dart. Secura awoke inside an Ewok treehouse, and using the battle droid as a translator, she learned that the natives believed her to be a forest spirit. As a spirit, the Ewoks declared that it was her duty to vanquish the Beast in the Mouth of the Mountain that terrorized them. Secura, accompanied by the opinionated battle droid, agreed to their request. While ascending the towering mountain to the Beast's lair, Secura debated with the droid about her sympathy for her clone troopers and grew increasingly irritated with it as their journey progressed up the formidable mountain peak.

Secura attacking the Beast in the Mouth of the Mountain

Upon reaching the cave of the Beast in the Mouth of the Mountain, the Jedi Master tripped over a large pile of bones at the cave's entrance, alerting the Beast to their presence in its lair. The massive Beast swiftly impaled the unarmed battle droid with its sharp claws, killing it, but this fortunately allowed the Twi'lek Jedi Master to use the Force on the collapsing sections of the cave's ceiling, causing them to crash down upon the monster, killing it instantly. Having fulfilled her duty as the Ewok's spirit, Secura then returned to her Republic gunships at their rendezvous point, where Bly and her clone troopers were patiently awaiting her. Dismissing her commander's concerns about her whereabouts, the pair, along with their squadron of clone troopers, embarked on their next mission. The Ewoks would forever remember Secura's courageous deeds, immortalizing her in a large painting depicting her victory over the enormous Beast, which they would revere for many years to come.

Siege of Saleucami

Secura accompanied Tholme to the planet Anzat to investigate the renegade Jedi Sora Bulq, Dooku's right-hand man. She located Bulq's ship, engaged in combat with a Morgukai warrior, and stole the logbooks. The logbooks revealed separatist activity on Saleucami.

Subsequently, the Council assigned her to a mission on Trigalis. There, she encountered Obi-Wan Kenobi, consumed with stalking Asajj Ventress, and offered him her Jedi starfighter. She then received a transmission from Tholme, informing her that the Separatists had created an army of Bok's clones on Saleucami, the Morgukai warrior she had defeated years prior, specially trained by Anzati to kill Jedi.

Secura and Bly during the Siege of Saleucami

Consequently, the Republic dispatched an army to besiege Saleucami, supported by numerous Jedi, including Quinlan Vos, who was seemingly repentant but still playing a double game. Piloting a Jedi starfighter with the Republic's Blue Squadron, Secura provided air support to the ground forces and destroyed Separatist ion cannons exposed by her allies' sabotage of their shield generator, forcing the enemy to retreat.

Secura and Vos fought alongside each other against Morgukai clones, destroyed the planetary shield that prevented the Republic forces from bombarding the planet, and destroyed the cloning facilities. Secura then had to confront Bok again and killed him, while Vos faced Sora Bulq in a duel, drifting further towards the dark side of the Force. Secura and Tholme entered into meditation and rescued Quinlan from the darkness, enabling him to defeat his opponent.

Death

Aayla Secura being gunned down by her troops during the execution of Order 66 on Felucia.

Following the conclusion of the Saleucami siege, Aayla Secura and her forces were dispatched to Felucia. Their mission was to assist Jedi Knight Barriss Offee in her investigation of a scheme to contaminate the planet's water supply. While serving alongside the 501st Legion, Secura earned their respect by rescuing them from several deadly acklays and aiding in the destruction of an automated turret system. After liberating Offee and her new Padawan Zonder, Secura, along with Padawans Ekria and Drake Lo'gaan, uncovered that Presidente Shu Mai of the Commerce Guild was the one who orchestrated the poisoning of Felucia's water.

As Offee led a team towards Har Gau, Secura and Commander Bly journeyed to Niango. While preparing for a droid assault, Secura noticed a Felucian bird soaring above. Standing behind Secura, Commander Bly, ever loyal, received an order directly from the Supreme Chancellor. This order was Order 66, which branded Secura and other Jedi as enemies of the Republic. Distracted by the avian creature, the Twi'lek Jedi didn't even have a chance to activate her lightsaber before being shot from behind. She collapsed beneath a large fungal growth as her own troops continued to fire upon her. Shortly thereafter, the nearest AT-TE walker targeted Barriss Offee, making her another casualty of the Great Jedi Purge. Both met their end on GrS 16:5:23.

While fleeing from his own clone troopers, Quinlan Vos sensed Secura's demise, realizing she was dead. Immediately after the Twi'lek's passing, Jedi Master Darrus Jeht, a close friend of Secura, felt her death through the Force, experiencing a vision of her being killed by the clones, causing him great distress.

Legacy

With the rise of the Galactic Empire, official reports created by Sate Pestage claimed Aayla Secura and Barriss Offee were executed for plotting to poison Felucia's water, even though it was actually the Separatists. When the Jedi Order was purged, a member of the 501st reflected on his time with Secura on Felucia. Although he believed the Jedi were traitors, he hoped Secura had a swift death, feeling "she had earned that much."

Despite the Empire's efforts, Aayla Secura was remembered fondly by the people of the worlds she helped, sometimes becoming intertwined with existing goddess myths or historical figures. As late as 40 ABY, a professor named Movac Arisster thought he saw a vision of Secura instructing him to kill a Jedi, but it was actually a projection from the Sith Lady Lumiya. Even then, fictional stories about her life were still being written.

Personality and traits

Although her clothing was practical, Secura was not devoid of ornamentation as this ornate navel jewelry illustrates.

Aayla Secura, a Jedi known for her empathy and intelligence, also had a playful and somewhat impetuous side. She developed great confidence in her skills, without becoming arrogant. She was a capable leader and a skilled strategist, earning the respect of many clone troopers during the Clone Wars due to her quick thinking. Her first name, Aayla, meaning 'smoke' or 'mist' in Ryl, was a typical name for female Twi'leks.

Following the events on Kiffex, she sensed an emptiness within herself. Master Yoda comforted her, advising her to trust in the strength the Force provided. Years later, events on Cavamina Minor brought about a change, and she expressed feeling that something had been found.

Force-sensitives Aayla Secura and Quinlan Vos form an immediate Force bond.

Secura and Kit Fisto shared a brief romantic connection, but her commitment to the Jedi Order led her to prioritize it over their relationship, although they retained feelings for each other. Since childhood, Aayla had a deep Force bond with Quinlan Vos, the Padawan who rescued her, predating his turn to the dark side; she considered him a father figure. However, like her relationship with Fisto, she eventually learned to let go of her attachment to her master, and she later taught Ahsoka Tano, Skywalker's padawan, to do the same. She resisted allowing anger or violence to dictate her actions. She also had a close friendship with Commander Bly, but like most clones Bly obeyed Order 66, betrayed her trust, and killed her.

Secura's attire was functional, though somewhat revealing, allowing her freedom of movement while also displaying her Jedi affiliation. She also adorned herself with ornate navel jewelry. Secura found that she could think more clearly while engaging in a form of moving meditation.

Powers and abilities

Aayla Secura's training as a Jedi Guardian, a particularly combat-oriented Jedi class, made her a remarkably skilled fighter. She quickly became proficient in Ataru, the fourth form of lightsaber combat, had some skill in the fifth form, Djem So, and practiced dual-lightsaber combat. Her lightsaber skills allowed her to survive the Battle of Geonosis, stand her ground against General Grievous (with the help of other Jedi), and defeat the skilled bounty hunter Aurra Sing in a duel. She also became skilled in unarmed combat, especially during sparring sessions with Commander Bly. In battle, she was known to use the Nexu stance evasive roll. On occasion, she would use her green-bladed lightsaber alongside her blue one, employing her Jar'Kai skills. She was skilled at deflecting close-range shots and dodging darts. She was resilient enough to recover after being thrown around by Vos. She excelled at piloting machines more than Vos.

Beyond her combat skills, Secura was highly skilled in stealth and infiltration, techniques she learned from Quinlan Vos and Tholme, who were considered less intuitive with the Force than she was. Secura also had some skill with Force cloak, using it to prevent a swarm of Quarra beasts from noticing as she walked among them, which was a hard to learn ability that some masters couldn't complete. She could hide her Force presence, as she did to prevent Sora Bulq from noticing any more than a passing flicker of her power when she was spying on some traitors to the Republic. She effectively used Force push and Force pull, such as when she threw debris at Sing, Force pushed the assassin, knocked Noghri into a wall, and slew Bok by pushing him against a laser gate, after using the Force to leap around one of his blows and outmauver him. Besides moving objects, she could augment her body’s abilities. Secura could survive long falls without injury if she had time to prepare. She had previously used saber throw against other Morgukai warriors. She also could deflect blaster bolts with the Force. Once, she raised a barrier to protect herself when a ship she was on was destroyed, and later held back deadly gas. Though she was defeated, she was able to survive the blast of a Death Watch rocket. Her Force senses were such that she could find other Jedi, detect the health of her allies, and feel the dark side in others and sometimes feel their intent to betray her, and she was a skilled pilot, more so than her master Quinlan Vos She was also known to use her beauty and Force powers to seduce people into giving information. She could use the Force to calm others, make them follow her orders, or fall asleep. The Jedi had a slight measure of skill at Force healing. Aayla Secura also dabbled in the dark side, such as gaining a proficiency in Force choke, was able to use Force lightning.

Equipment

Aayla Secura's lightsaber

As Quinlan Vos's apprentice, she wielded a red lightsaber, later switching to a blue one during her retraining under Master Tholme. By the Clone Wars, Secura had constructed two lightsabers, using a blue and green blade together, or a single blue lightsaber, that she primary used during Outer Rim Sieges campaigns, until her death on Felucia, where she was betrayed by the troops under her command and gunned down before she could defend herself.

After being rescued from slavery, Secura wore a simple light brown dress with matching darker head and foot wraps. Early in her apprenticeship with Vos, she wore traditional cream-colored Jedi robes with a utility belt, a sleeveless brown cloak, and a headband adorned with gold ornaments. By her mission to Ryloth, she wore a mesh bodysuit beneath a sleeved cloak, and similar, less revealing, clothing during her amnesiac enslavement by Pol Secura. On Kiffex, Secura wore a Twi'lek-style Jedi uniform: brown combat boots, trousers, plain head-and-lekku-wraps, a rycrit hide belt, and a one-sleeved vest. Secura preferred this fitted clothing to the traditional Jedi robes, finding them restrictive in combat. Though she wore the mesh suit upon returning to Coruscant with Tholme, she sported the Twi'lek Jedi robes as his Padawan, which she continued to wear until her death. Secura also used various disguises while undercover: a Huttese slave-girl costume as Ro Fenn's servant, black pants and top with shoulder pads and goggles as the mechanic Jaayza (or Jayzaa), and white-and-purple gowns as trade heiress Tuulaa Doneeta.

Under the call sign Red Two, Secura piloted a Delta-7 Aethersprite-class light interceptor with Jedi Master Tsui Choi's Red Squadron during the Battle of Kamino in the Clone Wars. By her covert mission to Trigalis, she owned a blue Eta-2 Actis-class interceptor, which she lent to Obi-Wan Kenobi, later flying a red-brown Actis-class interceptor with Blue Squadron during the Siege of Saleucami.

Behind the scenes

Early, unused concept art by Dermot Power, of a fish-like Jedi that would evolve into Kit Fisto.

Aayla Secura was originally conceived for the Expanded Universe by artist Jan Duursema and writer John Ostrander. Early designs depicted her as a fish-like creature rather than a Twi'lek. After seeing cover art of the final character, George Lucas decided to include her in Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones.

Amy Allen played Aayla Secura in Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, while Jennifer Hale voiced her in Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series. Dave Filoni, the series director, instructed Hale to perform the role with a French accent, as a tribute to the French resistance fighters of World War II.

Her surname originated from Nat Secura, first introduced in the short story Of the Day's Annoyances: Bib Fortuna's Tale from Tales from Jabba's Palace. The two later appeared together in Rite of Passage. Writer John Ostrander initially intended to kill Secura in Twilight, but Jan Duursema's daughter Sian convinced him to spare her.

In the game Star Wars: Battlefront II, Secura is shown wielding two lightsabers—one green and one blue (though she has blue and purple sabers in the cutscenes and the PlayStation Portable version)—but she uses only a single blue saber in all G- and T-canon appearances. In Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Secura appears in the Wii and PlayStation Portable-exclusive duel mode, voiced by Kari Wahlgren. In the video game Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, entering AAYLASECURA as a cheat code unlocks all concept art.

The Dark Horse Comics story "What Goes Up...," from 2006's Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures Volume 5, stated Secura traveled from Endor to participate in the Battle of Felucia. However, the sixth issue of the Star Wars: Dark Times series, published in the following year, says she was deployed to Felucia from Saleucami, creating uncertainty about the precise sequence of events.
