Imara Vex

Imara Vex, a bounty hunter of the human female persuasion, operated during the eras of both the Galactic Empire and the succeeding New Republic. Separated from her parents at a young age, Vex later joined Chanath Cha's Orphans, a group of bounty hunters, which included Ladybright and Sear. The Orphans became allies with Lady Qi'ra, who led the Crimson Dawn criminal organization, and participated in Qi'ra's scheme to dismantle the power of the Sith Lords Darth Sidious and Darth Vader and restructure the balance of power in the galaxy. Vex, along with the other Orphans, secretly attacked various syndicates, inciting conflict and ultimately contributing to the outbreak of the Syndicate War. This was done to turn the syndicates against each other.

After the Empire's collapse, Vex participated in the Hunters of the Outer Rim competition held on the planet Vespaara, with the intention of attracting potential employers.

Biography

Becoming an Orphan

Vex was a member of Chanath Cha's Orphans, alongside Ladybright and Sear.

Imara Vex had been separated from her parents since she was a small child, and she was unsure if they were alive or dead later in life. She eventually rose to prominence as a well-known professional bounty hunter. Vex joined the Orphans, a group headed by the bounty hunter Chanath Cha and including Sear and the droid Ladybright, during the reign of the Galactic Empire. The Orphans, who operated from the starship Siroto, had all experienced circumstances similar to Vex's, as their name suggests.

The Crimson Dawn plot

Creating the distraction

The Orphans formed an alliance with the newly reformed Crimson Dawn criminal organization and its leader, Lady Qi'ra, by 3 ABY. Following Crimson Dawn's auction of the carbonite-encased smuggler Han Solo, which revealed the syndicate's presence to the galaxy, Vex and her fellow Orphans gathered with Qi'ra's other allies on the Vermillion, Crimson Dawn's [fortress](/article/fortress]-flagship. Qi'ra revealed to her allies aboard the Vermillion the true nature of the galaxy: rather than the balanced power structure she sought, it was dominated by the SithDarth Sidious, publicly known as Emperor Palpatine, and his apprentice Darth Vader—whom she intended to destroy in order to liberate the galaxy.

Imara Vex during the Orphans' mission to Dantooine

The Orphans were assigned to attack other criminal syndicates as part of Qi'ra's plan to create chaos and mistrust in the underworld. A smash-processing lab belonging to Black Sun on the planet Dantooine was their first target. Vex landed the Siroto on Dantooine and waited away from the facility while Cha, Sear, and Ladybright went closer. Vex used her blaster rifle to shoot the guards, and the other Orphans entered and launched their attack. When two Black Sun transports tried to get away, Vex, unable to target both before they were out of range, contacted her partners to inform them of the situation. Sear headed for the Siroto, while Vex aimed at and fired on one of the transports, successfully hitting and destroying it.

The Orphans' mission was accomplished when Sear shot down the other transport, and the crew anonymously posted images of the destroyed facility on the shadowfeeds with a threat to Black Sun. The mission was successful as the Orphans and Qi'ra had hoped; Black Sun, believing one of its competitors was responsible for the attack but unsure who, planned to strike at all of them to send a message. Vex and the other Orphans continued their attacks on other syndicates, making sure they were never seen as the true perpetrators. The Orphans' attacks, combined with false rumors that Qi'ra was spreading about the Empire looking for the strongest syndicate to partner with, sparked conflict between the syndicates and the start of the Syndicate War. Palpatine noticed the war and ordered Vader to take action.

Confronting Darth Vader

Vader went to "The Archivist" and Kho Phon Farrus' location to retrieve the Fermata Cage, a Sith artifact essential to Qi'ra's plans, and kill them after they were unsuccessful in unlocking it. Qi'ra anticipated this and dispatched Vex and the rest of the Orphans to save the two and the Cage. The team approached from the opposite side after arriving at the planet to avoid Vader's Star Destroyer, staying low and using the Siroto's cloaking capabilities to get onto the planet. They made their way to the Archivist and Farrus' location after leaving the ship in a clearing in a jungle, who had tried to hide from Vader but had been discovered by the Sith Lord. Cha yelled out to him as he Force choked them, revealing herself and her team and stating her intent to kill him. Vader started to approach them, and Cha had Ladybright impair Vader's vision before throwing a ball of acid at him. Vader Force pushed the team in response, while also destroying a machine that housed the Fermata Cage, before entering an ocean to neutralize the acid.

Sear bemoaned that they hadn't had time to blast him while Vader was temporarily gone, and Vex pointed out to her that he had gone out into the ocean and that she had lost him. Cha informed Vex that Vader would return as soon as he had neutralized the acid, adding that they didn't have much time. Vex and Cha then assisted the Archivist and Farrus in standing up. The Archivist pointed out as they started to leave that they needed to take the Fermata Cage with them, and Cha instructed Sear and Vex to retrieve it. Farrus expressed their uncertainty about whether it was safe for either of them to touch, so Ladybright offered to carry it because they were not alive. Following this, Vader emerged from the water, and Cha instructed Vex to accompany Laybright, the Archivist, and Farrus while she and Sear fought Vader. Vex informed Cha that she was unable to fight Vader, to which she replied that the important thing was for her and Ladybright to get Farrus and the Archivist to safety, adding that they could swing back and pick up Cha and Sear later. Vex wished the two luck, stating that she would assist them if she could. She then told the two that it had been a ride, which Sear agreed with.

Vex decided she wanted to help Cha and Sear after the four arrived at the Siroto, so she instructed Ladybright to raise the ship because she needed elevation. As the droid complied, the Archivist instructed Vex to instruct Ladybright to keep the ship steady because they didn't want to crack open the Cage. Vex retorted to the Archivist that she would crack her open as she claimed a ladder on the ship. Vex set her blaster into position to fire on Vader after arriving at the top of the ship, and she saw Sear being pushed into the wreckage of the machine, killing her. Vex shouted out Sear's name while instructing Ladybright to keep the Siroto steady as she aimed at Vader's head. Vex then opened fire, but Vader raised his arm and she instead hit it, revealing to Vader and Cha that the team was still there. Vader referred to Vex as a coward, adding that she believed she was safe from him from a distance. Vader then declared that nowhere was safe from the Force and that nowhere was safe from him as he swung his lightsaber at the ship, creating turbulence. As Vex spoke to herself, calling Vader a "bastard," telling him to be as angry as he wanted, and to stand right where he was glance at her, so that she could fire again on him, finishing that she did not miss twice. At this point, the turbulence created by Vader reached the Siroto, and Vex was knocked off of the ship by it, falling through the jungle until she was caught in the branches of trees, ending her fight. Ladybright was then destroyed by the Archivist for failing to follow Qi'ra's orders, who then took control of the Siroto and left the planet with Farrus and the Fermata Cage on board. Cha was ultimately killed by Vader during their fight.

Hunter of the Arena

Vex remained active as a bounty hunter after the Empire's fall and the rise of the New Republic. She competed in the Hunters of the Outer Rim tournament held in the Grand Arena on the Outer Rim planet Vespaara. Vex used the competition to showcase her skills to potential clients. Vex spoke about various adventures during her bounty hunting career within the Arena, but because of the Arena's performative nature, such stories could be exaggerated or fabricated for entertainment purposes. Vex did claim, however, to have worked for the White Worms on Corellia, completed a job on Mimban, and been stranded on a desert planet for six months at one point.

Vex spent time with Grozz and Zaina outside of her work in the Arena, frequenting the Oasis Cantina. The group eventually included Rieve on their outings, enjoying gonkrock performances together. Vex collaborated with the other Hunters and Daq Dragus to pursue the mysterious figure and repel the intruders when goons led by that figure attacked the Grand Arena with the intention of causing destruction.

Imara Vex brawled with Aran Tal in the Arena's chow room.

Vex was deeply offended when she learned that Aran Tal, a fellow Hunter and Mandalorian warrior, had referred to bounty hunters as "scum," and she demanded an apology from Tal, who instead reiterated his remarks.

Imara was interviewed by the Arena's announcer, the Dowutin Boz Vega, and immediately expressed disbelief at Aran Tal's remarks, claiming that there was no difference between her former job as a bounty hunter and Aran Tal's previous work as a mercenary. Vex ignored Boz's awkward suggestion that one difference might be that Vex kept her bounty hunting money while Tal donated his mercenary money and instead insulted Tal's self-righteous attitude.

When Aran took the last nuna-leg from the Chow room, the tension between Tal and Vex reached a breaking point, sparking a brawl between the two that destroyed the room and involved fellow Hunters J-3DI and Grozz before Arena co-owner Daq Dragus intervened. He escorted them out, with both feuding Hunters in surprisingly good spirits.

When Tal challenged Imara Vex to a battle, she held a press conference to accept and declare that if she won, Tal would have to accompany her on a bounty hunting mission. Tal, however, defeated Vex.

Personality and traits

Imara Vex, as a bounty hunter, intentionally kept her personal and social life a secret, refusing to talk about herself or confide in others. She also avoided attachments; knowing as little as possible about others ensured that she would have no personal objections to any of her jobs' targets, while ensuring that others knew little about her meant that they would have less to use against her. She had been a member of a found family as part of the Orphans, but she was the only survivor of the group after their encounter with Darth Vader.

Vex had a rivalry with the Mandalorian Aran Tal in her Arena persona, who publicly expressed a strong disdain for bounty hunters. It was said that Vex was irritated by his holier-than-thou attitude, which led to public trash-talking between them.

Vex, as a professional bounty hunter, was constantly looking for targets to ensure she never lost. She was a skilled sniper who could hit targets from a long distance. She was outfitted with a variety of gadgets that aided her in detecting enemies and traversing great heights.

Equipment

Vex concealed her face with her signature Ubese-style helmet, which made her look intimidating. She used the Firestorm Rifle, a modified A280 blaster rifle with a yellow and red color scheme and an orange design that she used as a sniper rifle, as well as a shoulder-mounted missile launcher that housed a homing micro-missile. Vex wore a brown jacket over a brown shirt and a red chestplate, as well as dark red pants and brown boots. She also wore a gray belt and a pair of brown gloves. Vex also wore a red vambrace on her left arm that had a grappling hook attached to it.
