Irizi'in'daro

Irizi'in'daro, whose core name was Ziinda, held the rank of Senior Captain in the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet's Picket Force Six and was a Chiss female. Ziinda commanded the warship Grayshrike and was considered the most dedicated and single-minded officer serving under Admiral Ar'alani's command in her fleet. As a Trial-born member of the Ruling Irizi family within the Chiss Ascendancy, she previously held the name Xodlak'in'daro with the core name Lakinda as a merit adoptive of the Great Xodlak family before her rematching to the Irizi family. Lakinda, in collaboration with Senior Captain Mitth'raw'nuruodo, successfully thwarted a scheme in 18 BBY orchestrated by the Grysk operative "Jixtus" and Haplif of the Agbui, aimed at instigating a civil conflict within the Chiss Ascendancy. The Grysk's strategy involved deceiving Chiss family dignitaries, including Patriels and Councilors from rival Great Families, into making competing claims over a purported [nyix](/article/nyix]-rich Agbui mining world, thereby provoking armed clashes. The Xodlak, Pommrio, and Erighal families were the three Great Families who were manipulated by Jixtus; each was allied with a Ruling Family that was a rival to the other two Great Families' allied Ruling Family. As the commanding officer of the Xodlak task force, Lakinda was able to influence the skirmish's outcome, effectively preventing a civil war. Ziinda and her vessel were assigned to guard Jamiron when a Kilji warship was detected within the Chiss Ascendancy, assisting Clarr ships in combat against vessels that were supposedly Chiss gunboats but actually Grysk ships. Shortly thereafter, Ziinda intervened to save the Clarr light cruiser Orisson from destruction at Ornfra, thereby preventing another attempt to incite civil unrest among the Chiss. As one of Thrawn's trusted allies, Ziinda also participated in the final battle over Sunrise, contributing to the defeat of the Grysk fleet.

Biography

Early life

Originally, Lakinda, a female Chiss, was born into a relatively unknown and low-status obscure family situated within an Oyokal farming community. Seeking a different path, she left the community and enlisted in the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet, subsequently becoming a merit adoptive of the esteemed Xodlak family and adopting the name Xoldak'in'daro, or Lakinda. Expressing gratitude for being welcomed into one of the Forty Great Families, she dedicated herself to advancing through the ranks, aiming to bring honor to both herself and her new family, with the ultimate goal of restoring the Xodlak's position among the Ruling Families.

Cleaning up Nikardun Bases

By the time the Nikardun threat was neutralized during the Battle over Primea circa 19 BBY, Lakinda had achieved the rank of Senior Captain and was in command of the Chiss heavy cruiser Grayshrike. Serving as part of Admiral Ar'alani's fleet, specifically Picket Force Six, she joined forces with the Nightdragon man-of-war Vigilant and the heavy cruiser Springhawk, under the leadership of Senior Captain Mitth'raw'nuruodo Thrawn, to eliminate the remaining Nikardun bases within the Vak Combine. During a battle at the third-to-last base, the Nikardun's resistance proved stronger than anticipated. The Grayshrike sustained damage to its thrusters from an unfortunate hit, which reduced its maneuverability. Consequently, Lakinda had to accept assistance from the Springhawk and was required to remain behind while the Vigilant conducted a search of the rest of the system. Lakinda voiced her objections, asserting that the Grayshrike was still capable of participating. Ar'alani, aware of Lakinda's aversion to being excluded from action, assigned her the task of scanning the system for any additional Nikardun forces that might emerge. Lakinda readily accepted this assignment. After Thrawn and the Springhawk departed on a covert mission to the Rapacc system, Ar'alani and Lakinda proceeded to the second-to-last known Nikardun base, only to discover nine destroyed Nikardun vessels. While they were collecting data and speculating about which faction in that region of space could have annihilated the Nikardun, they both received a communication from Supreme Admiral Ja'fosk, ordering Thrawn and the Springhawk to return to Csilla immediately. Given that Thrawn was out of communication range and no longer with them, Lakinda offered to deliver the message herself. After Lakinda expressed concern for the Vigilant's safety, Ar'alani assured her that her ship would be more than capable of handling the last Nikardun base, and the Grayshrike set course for Rapacc.

Interaction with the Paccosh

En route to the Rapacc system, Lakinda contemplated her current predicament. The damage to her thrusters in the recent engagement with the Nikardun and her assignment as a messenger left her feeling frustrated and deprived of the recognition that she believed rightfully belonged to the Xodlak family. She firmly believed that the Grayshrike could have single-handedly defeated the Nikardun. She also pondered whether Ar'alani and Thrawn were secretly conspiring to channel more glory to the Mitth family, despite the lack of concrete evidence to support this suspicion. Being relatively distant from Rapacc, Lakinda attempted to persuade her sky-walker, Bet'nih, with a specific dark cheese to expedite the ship's navigation through hyperspace, but her efforts proved unsuccessful. They arrived near the Rapacc system twenty-nine hours after departing from the Vigilant, from which they sent a tight-beam transmission to Thrawn. While awaiting a response from the Springhawk, Bet'nih was escorted back to her quarters by her caregiver, Soomret. Soomret remarked on how some military officers overlooked the needs of sky-walkers, prompting Lakinda to internally roll her eyes, considering that the caregiver had arrived thirty minutes later than prescribed in the sky-walker manuals. As Bet'nih rose from her navigation chair, she experienced difficulty maintaining her balance, a lingering effect of Third Sight. Mid Commander Wikivv, who was at the helm, reacted swiftly to catch her, already familiar with these issues. After Bet'nih and Soomret left the bridge, Wikivv informed Lakinda that younger sky-walkers often suffered such effects after spending more than five or six hours navigating. Consequently, Lakinda resolved to discuss the matter with Supreme Admiral Ja'fosk and the Defense Hierarchy Council, aiming to challenge the policy that permitted sky-walkers to remain in third sight for up to nine hours, or even twelve in emergencies. Since the Springhawk did not respond, Lakinda contacted the Rapacc government, reaching Uingali foar Marocsaa. He informed her that Thrawn had departed the Rapacc system seven hours earlier, taking an individual known as the Magys to her homeworld. Lakinda, quite certain that Thrawn lacked authorization for such a journey, was surprised to learn that it appeared to be the only way to prevent the Magys and her people from committing suicide. Because Uingali was unable to disclose the name of the Magys's people or their homeworld, Lakinda and her first officer, Mid Captain Chap'ro'strob (Apros), questioned his reliability. Nevertheless, they accepted the coordinates of Thrawn's destination provided by Uingali. The distance between Rapacc and this planet was fifteen hours by sky-walker, while the distance from the Grayshrike's current location and the planet was only ten hours by sky-walker. Considering Thrawn's headstart, both Wikivv and Apros suggested for Bet'nih to return to the bridge to navigate, citing the sky-walker emergency protocols. However, knowing that Bet'nih was tired and assuming that Thrawn would not use his sky-walker for all fifteen of those hours, Lakinda resolved to start the Grayshrike's journey via jump-by-jump. As she travels to her own quarters for her rest period, Lakinda wonders how Thrawn plans to use his new mission to benefit the Mitth.

First Skirmish Over Sunrise

Upon the Grayshrike's arrival at the outer edges of the system specified by Uingali, Lakinda placed her crew on high alert. While some crew members questioned her caution, Lakinda was well aware of Thrawn's history. As expected, scans revealed that the Springhawk was engaged in combat with fifteen gunboats of an unknown faction in high orbit around the planet. Eager to secure honor for her family, Lakinda decided to join the fray and reinforce Thrawn. Wikivv executed an in-system jump, bringing the Grayshrike directly to the planet, arriving at a different angle than Thrawn. From their position, they observed a Battle Dreadnought class starship, the Grysk Shatter-class WarMaster HopeBreaker, in orbit around the planet, its size dwarfing the combined size of the two Chiss heavy cruisers. The dreadnought immediately targeted the Grayshrike with three missiles, initiating the battle. Thrawn quickly devised a risky and, in Lakinda's opinion, reckless plan. Given that the Springhawk would bear the brunt of the risk, Lakinda agreed to proceed. Positioned between the Springhawk and Grayshrike were ten gunboats converging on the Grayshrike. The Springhawk would disable all of these gunboats with its remaining twenty plasma spheres. Lakinda would subsequently fire its plasma spheres upon the portside of the HopeBreaker, disabling its sensor capabilities. The Springhawk signaled the Grayshrike to make an in-system jump away from the battle, and during the Grayshrike's absence, Thrawn would fire the Springhawk's remaining breacher missiles at the Battle Dreadnought. Because its portside sensors were down, the HopeBreaker did not see the missiles, and upon the breacher missiles impacting the warship, the Springhawk would fire laser barrages on the HopeBreaker's portside, causing heavy amounts of damage. The HopeBreaker would turn around, facing its damaged side away from the Springhawk. However, the Grayshrike was performing a series of in-system jumps and would emerge back into the battle on the other side of the HopeBreaker. Lakinda continued causing massive damage to the HopeBreaker's portside before it made its own escape into hyperspace. However, it destroyed all its surviving gunboats beforehand, leaving no information for the Chiss to collect. Following the battle, Lakinda met with Thrawn and his first officer Mid Captain Samakro aboard the Springhawk to discuss their victory and deliver the message from Ja'fosk. She also informed Thrawn that Ar'alani suspected the message originated from the Syndicure, based on its writing style. Thrawn understood that he had to depart immediately, leaving him no time to investigate what the alien dreadnought had been doing here. Thrawn also mentioned that the sight of the destroyed surface of the planet had convinced the Magys that her people were lost and had ordered her companion to die, who had already complied. To keep her from killing herself, the Magys had then been put into an hybernation chamber. Lakinda promised to keep the information confidential unless directly questioned by a superior officer. The Springhawk and Grayshrike departed the system together, and the Grayshrike returned to the first of the last two Nikardun bases to rendezvous with the Vigilant. It would then travel back to the Csilla, where it would be repaired in one of the blackdocks (instead of the bluedocks). Since the blackdock was further away from the planet, the Grayshrike could more easily be sent out to rendezvous with the Vigilant to further investigate the situation at Sunrise (the Syndicure did not want the Grayshrike to be that far away from the Ascendancy).

Second Skirmish Over Sunrise

Subsequently, the Vigilant and the Grayshrike revisited Sunrise to conduct further investigations. Anticipating further enemy encounters, they arrived to find no apparent enemy ships. However, the area the dreadnought had been guarding was on the other side of the planet and outside of their view. Shortly after their arrival, the Chiss detected an asteroid orbiting the planet in a nearly circular path (with an eccentricity of 0.005), prompting them to question whether it had been there previously or if it was a similar weapon to what Ar'alani had discovered at the last Nikardun base (where an asteroid concealed a missile launcher that destroyed the base). Under Ar'alani's orders, the Grayshrike executed an in-system jump to a position just one kilometer from the asteroid, using it as cover. Meanwhile, the Vigilant executed its own in-system jump and encountered the same Battle Dreadnought, the HopeBreaker, from Lakinda's previous visit to Sunrise. Following a brief exchange between Ar'alani and the dreadnought's commander, the asteroid began to rotate, confirming its artificial nature. Lakinda and her bridge crew rapidly devised a plan to disable the missile launcher concealed within the artificial asteroid. The Grayshrike observed that the asteroid was composed of small hexagonal fracture zones that were too small to fit a missile through, so, therefore, if the asteroid was indeed hiding a missile launcher, there would be a larger hexagonal zone for it to launch through. Shortly before the battle between the Vigilant and the dreadnought was about to start and the asteroid was ready to fire, the Grayshrike found this larger hexagon zone, and Lakinda ordered the Grayshrike to fire upon it with laserfire. The asteroid subsequently exploded, exposing the hexagonal lattice structure surrounding the missile launcher, which was quickly disabled by the Grayshrike with plasma spheres. Ar'alani instructed Lakinda to use a tractor beam to drag the launcher and join the battle between the Vigilant and the HopeBreaker. Lakinda, misinterpreting Ar'alani's intention to use the entire structure as a weapon against their enemy, assumed that Ar'alani wanted to study the launcher after the battle. Unable to free the launcher from the lattice structure in time, she decided that the Grayshrike could fetch the launcher after the battle and subsequently ordered the Grayshrike to aid the Vigilant immediately. Lakinda ordered the Grayshrike to approach the HopeBreaker on from its portside, which was still heavily damaged and disabled from its previous skirmish. Ar'alani, wanting to distract the HopeBreaker from the Grayshrike's approach, initiated a conversation and taunted the Dreadnought's commander, and the Grayshrike would temporarily go dark to further conceal their approach. She then fired breacher missiles and plasma spheres at the HopeBreaker's starboard side, further distracting it. Then, the Grayshrike fired two clusters of breacher missiles at the HopeBreaker's portside, and the Grayshrike's preceding laser fire resulted in the destruction of the HopeBreaker's hyperdrive and one of its reactors. The enemy commander, realizing the hopelessness of the situation, ordered the destruction of both the HopeBreaker and the derelict asteroid missile launcher, leaving only debris behind. Following the battle, Lakinda received new orders from Csilla. She and the Grayshrike were to return to Csilla for repairs and join Thrawn and the Springhawk on their hunt for Vagaari pirates. In a meeting on the Vigilant, Lakinda apologized for misunderstanding Ar'alani's orders, but the Admiral ensured her that the missile launcher would have ended up exploded either way. Ar'alani also confronted Lakinda about her new orders, stating that she obviously had animosity with Thrawn. Lakinda denied the accusations, telling the Admiral that no personal opinion or family politics would influence her decisions as an officer. After transferring the remaining breachers and plasma fluid to the Vigilant, the Grayshrike left for Csilla.

Xodlak Family Emergency

As the Grayshrike neared completion of its rearming process at Csilla, Lakinda received a communication from Lieutenant Commander Lakwurn, a Xodlak hyperdrive technician assigned to the Grayshrike. They convened in the chamber of hyperdrive two, where he revealed that he had a package to be delivered to Thrawn but was unable to do so himself due to a family emergency declared by the Xodlak. Upon checking her own messages, Lakinda discovered that she had received the same summons from Patriel Xodlak'oo'nifis (Lakooni) on the planet Celwis. This emergency summons ordered every Xodlak officer and warrior in the Chiss military to aid the family. Lakinda quickly weighed the importance of her assignment on board the Grayshrike with the importance of this family emergency, and decided that Thrawn needed only her ship to help him, not her specifically. Examining the box, Lakinda and Lakwurn discovered a metal brooch, and Lakinda would task Mid Captain Apros with giving it to Thrawn before giving him command of the Grayshrike and departing for Celwis. Upon arriving at Celwis, she was greeted by Xodlak'ji'iprip (Lakjiip), the Senior Aide of Celwis Xodlak Councilor Xodlak'uvi'vil (Lakuviv), who expressed surprise that a Senior Captain had responded to the call. Lakinda affirmed that regardless of her rank, she would serve her family with pride and honor. Lakjiip then appointed Lakinda as the commander of the Midsummer and of the family taskforce to lay claim on a nyix mine on an the planet of Hoxim. With that mine in their possession, the Xodlak hoped to regain their status among the Ruling Families. When Lakinda inquired about Patriel Lakooni, Lakjiip replied that she was consulting with Lakuviv in his office. In truth, she was being held hostage because she did not approve with Lakuviv's plan to claim the mine. Aboard the Midsummer, Lakinda listens to a final message of instruction and encouragement form Lakuviv. To herself, she gloated that there would soon be ten Ruling Families. She also reflected upon her failure to learn her bridge crew's names, which irked her. Before their departure to Hoxim, Councilor Lakuviv told them that he had instructed the comm officers to ignore every transmission that was not coming from him, fearing that somebody would try to stop the taskforce. Accompanied by the Xodlak cruiser Apogee, the Midsummer departed for Hoxim, and as they left, she told the comm officer to inform her about any incoming transmission. When Lakinda's first officer reminded her of Lakuviv's orders, she reminded him that commanding officers can countermand any orders where they see fit.

Crisis at Hoxim

Later, the second comm officer called Lakinda as she was asleep, informing her about an incoming transmission from the Grayshrike. Lakinda, fearing something had happened to her ship in her absence, ordered the comm officer to open the channel. Apros, joined by Thrawn onboard the Springhawk, told her that the Pommrio and the Erighal had also called family emergencies. Worse, they gathered in the same region on the rim of the Ascendancy. They also told her that the jewelry given out by the Agbui actually originated from Sunrise, leading to conclusion that the mine Lakinda was tasked to claim for the Xodlak was fake and worthless. Assuming that the Erighal and Pommrio, both of the Great Families, were racing to the same destination, they realized that the Agbui were aiming to start a civil war among the Chiss, like they had probably done it with the people of Sunrise. Thrawn quickly came up with an insane plan to prevent the three family task forces from attacking each other. The Grayshrike and Springhawk would arrive at Hoxim before the three family fleets and would coordinate an fake attack on the Springhawk. Thrawn and Apros hope that the three families would help "save" the Springhawk before fighting each other over the fake mine. Lakinda agreed to quicken her fleet's arrival at Hoxim. Lakinda also made it plain that if it was inevitable, she was prepared for her ships to be destroyed. When the call ended, she ordered her pilot to calculate how to shorten the journey. After arriving at Hoxim, Lakinda discovered that her Xodlak fleet had arrived before the Ergihal and Pommrio fleets. Lakinda's first officer then demanded to know more about their mission, and Lakinda only told them that Lakuviv sent them to examine the value of rare ore mines on the planet. Because Lakinda only told them the bare minimum, the first officer threatened her with his status as Xodlak blood. Before Lakinda could say more, the Erighal and Pommrio task forces arrived, laying claim on the world and its resources. Quickly, the situation escalated and the families perpared for battle, when, suddenly, they noticed the Springhawk coming around the edge of the planet, apparently attacked by fourteen gunboats. As the gunboats broke off from the Springhawk and raced towards the ships of the three family, they quickly decided to join forces under Lakinda's command, as she was the highest ranking officer. The fighters, secretly piloted remotely by officers of the Springhawk, attacked the Chiss ships without dealing too much damage, while the Chiss tried to destroy all the fighters. When only eight fighters were left, Lakinda spotted the flaw in Thrawn's plan and retreated to the duty office to contact the Springhawk with a tight-beam transmission about it. She suggested that Thrawn had to find a way to destroy the fake mine so that the families wouldn't find out it to be a ruse and tried to find somebody to blame. She returned to the bridge to find her the second officer and two warriors with charrics were removing her from command under charges of crimes and offenses against the Xodlak family. Knowing that everyone on the bridge had probably been on board with the idea of mutiny, she conceeded and was confined to quarters until after the battle when a proper investigation could be completed. Although Lakinda was no longer in command, Thrawn and the Grayshrike succeeded in destroying the fake mine and preventing the family task forces from attacking each other.

Zistalmu's Offer

The Xodlak Patriarch was enraged by the testimony of the first officer aboard the Midsummer, accusing Lakinda of failing to secure the mine for the Xodlak. She wondered if the Xodlak would remove her from the family and she had to go back to her original minor family. In a meeting with Syndic Irizi'stal'mustro (Zistalmu), offering her a place in the Irizi family as a Trial-born. Lakinda was stunned by the offer, since the Irizi were one of the Ruling families and a Trial-born was much better than her current position as a merit adoptive. She assured Zistalmu that she would consider it and eventually took the offer. Her rematching to "Irizi'in'daro," core name "Ziinda," took place in Speaker Irizi'emo'lacfo's office, and was far less pompous than her rematching to the Xodlak had been. After the cerenomy, she met Speaker Xodlak'brov'omtivti in the Syndicure, who had just learned that Ziinda was to be rematched with the Irizi, and had hoped that she could get the chance to keep Ziinda with the Xodlak. Ziinda bluntly explained her that she knew her time with the Xodlak was over when the first officer of the Midsummer had relieved her of command and had gotten away with it only because he was blood. Lakbrovom assured her that she would bring him to justice, but Ziinda didn't care any longer about the family structure of the Xodlak.

Skirmish over Jamiron

Following the appearance of an unidentified alien warship within Chiss territory,

A substantial number of vessels belonging to the Expansionary Defense Fleet were reassigned to protect Ascendancy planets, with the Grayshrike among them, ordered to oversee Jamiron. Upon their arrival, Ziinda and her crew discovered a peculiar conflict: a contingent of Clarr freighters and the Clarr family light cruiser Orisson were engaged in battle against a pair of Chiss patrol ships. Despite the Clarr ships broadcasting transponder signals, the attacking patrol ships remained silent. The Orisson had taken damage, and the patrol ships were disrupting communications, so Ziinda commanded the Grayshrike to step in, launching plasma spheres to neutralize the attackers. The interception of these spheres by dibbers immediately brought to Ziinda's mind the battle dreadnaught over Sunrise, where a similar tactic was used against the Vigilant. Consequently, Ziinda deduced that the attackers were not Chiss, but rather the same adversaries they had encountered over Sunrise. The Grayshrike managed to disable two of the gunboats; however, before further action could be taken, the Orisson rejoined the fray, destroying the remaining attackers. Subsequently, the two incapacitated gunboats self-destructed, leaving no recoverable evidence for analysis. Eager to assist the remaining Clarr freighters, Ziinda was warned by Captain Roscu of the Orisson to refrain from interfering in Clarr affairs, or face the consequences. A dispute ensued between the two commanders regarding the Grayshrike's authorization, or even expectation, to aid the freighters. Roscu stated unequivocally that she would not allow an Irizi to uncover Clarr secrets, and revealed that the attacking patrol ships bore the symbols of the Xodlak and the Erighal family, which momentarily stunned Ziinda. Eventually, Roscu consented to share the data gathered from the attack with the Grayshrike, and Ziinda agreed to leave the freighters under the Orisson's care. The Grayshrike's analysts determined that the symbolic patterns affixed to the supposed Erighal ships were identical, exposing them as forgeries, as genuine family ship patterns were individually crafted. In a meeting with Supreme General Ba'kif, Admiral Ar'alani, and Senior Captain Wutroow, Ziinda presented their findings, leading Ba'kif to realize that the ships had been constructed by the same species that the Chiss had fought over Sunrise, after obtaining images of the ships at Hoxim. Ziinda nearly revealed Thrawn's involvement in coordinating the attack on the family warships at Hoxim, but managed to stop herself. Ultimately, Ba'kif issued new orders for the Grayshrike to follow Roscu to Ornfra and ensure that the Dasklo would not destroy the Orisson.

Skirmish over Ornfra

The Grayshrike reached Ornfra, a stronghold of the Dasklo family, one of the Nine Ruling Families and rivals of Roscu's family, ahead of the Orisson. While the Expansionary Defense Fleet ship was waiting, it was challenged by the Dasklo family ships. Ziinda was aware that if they reacted that way to the Grayshrike, they would be even more displeased by the arrival of a Clarr warship in the system. Indeed, as the Orisson appeared, two Dasklo Destroyers moved to intercept. Before Ziinda could warn Roscu that the message the Clarr had received by "Jixtus," ostensibly warning them about the Dasklo gathering new allies, was a deception, Roscu stated that she did not have time to listen to Ziinda, as she was searching for a Mitth spy platform in the system. Roscu terminated the communication, ignoring Ziinda's warnings, and aligned the Orisson to jump to the outer system. However, the in-system jump significantly overshot their intended destination, allowing Ziinda to arrive first, after deducing that Roscu had identified an asteroid as the supposed Mitth spy platform. She immediately recognized it as a hidden missile launcher similar to those encountered over Sunrise, and not a Chiss-made station. Approaching the fake asteroid, the Grayshrike also detected a freighter nearby, which had informed System Patrol Command that it was undergoing repairs. Ziinda concluded that they were controlling the missile launcher. She ordered her bridge crew to destroy the launcher platform, but at that moment, the Orisson reappeared, positioning itself directly in front of the asteroid, perfectly aligned for destruction. As Roscu continued to ignore Ziinda's attempts to hail her, Ziinda ordered the Grayshrike to fire across the Orisson's bow, which finally gained Roscu's attention. Eventually, Ziinda managed to convey to Roscu that the asteroid was an alien missile launcher platform and provided records from the one they faced over Sunrise, eventually convincing Roscu. However, before they could react, the asteroid rotated and the missile launcher aligned to fire at the Orisson. To their surprise, the launcher did not fire when it had the opportunity. Ziinda, understanding that the aliens intended to instigate a civil war among the Chiss, ultimately realized that their enemies would prefer the Chiss to attack each other without their direct involvement. Ziinda decided to play along and ordered Roscu to fire at the Grayshrike and to put on a convincing display while slowly moving out of the missile launcher's range. After a brief discussion, Roscu agreed to participate, and the staged battle commenced. Alerted by the laser fire, the two Dasklo Destroyers arrived to engage the Orisson themselves, disregarding Ziinda's warning to stay out of the conflict. Ultimately, Ziinda exploited the situation, firing a plasma sphere at one of the destroyers, but aiming for the alien freighter behind it. The destroyer evaded, and the freighter was disabled. Shortly thereafter, the freighter self-destructed, and moments later, the missile launcher platform exploded due to a dead-man switch. As no Chiss ship sustained damage, the civil war was once again averted.

Battle against the Grysk fleet

In 18 BBY, Ziinda, recognized as one of Thrawn's few friends, was selected by Ar'alani to contribute to Thrawn's strategy to defeat the Grysk fleet over Sunrise. Ar'alani also clarified that this was entirely unofficial and could have negative consequences if they succeeded. Nonetheless, both Ziinda and her first officer Apros agreed to assist. Ziinda also proposed enlisting Roscu and the Orisson, and later successfully recruited her. Sensing that Apros was preoccupied, Ziinda addressed his concerns, and he revealed his desire to make a meaningful contribution to earn honor for his Csap family. In the final battle over Sunrise in 18 BBY, Apros was assigned to protect and operate a secret alien weapon, a gravity well projector, while Ziinda remained aboard the Grayshrike, playing a crucial role in the battle against the Grysk. Initially, the Grayshrike assisted in eliminating a BattleChief and then engaged in combat with the StoneCrusher-class WarMaster Emery. Thanks to the gravity-well generator, the element of surprise, and Thrawn's audacious plan, the Grayshrike managed to destroy the significantly larger Emery. Subsequently, the Grayshrike aided the Orisson and the Springhawk in damaging another StoneCrusher, the Armageddon, but was then summoned to assist Apros in his gunboat, as Jixtus had identified him as a threat. In the end, the damaged Grayshrike positioned itself between the fleeing Grysk flagship, the FateSpinner, shielding the gunboat carrying the gravity-well generator, preventing the FateSpinner's escape. It was ultimately disabled by the Kilji warship WhetStone.

Aftermath of the victory over the Grysk

Upon returning to Csilla after the battle, Ziinda received commendation but was angered by Apros's lack of recognition. Ba'kif explained that commendation was a family matter, with the Irizi sponsoring hers, while the Csap had not done the same for Apros. Ziinda then suggested a promotion for Apros, as this was a military decision. Ba'kif inquired whether Apros was prepared and if she would relinquish her command and transfer the Grayshrike to him. After a moment of hesitation, Ziinda agreed. Pleased with her response, Ba'kif decided to grant Apros the Parala instead. Ziinda was also present as an observer when Thrawn was sentenced to exile by the military tribunal.

Personality and traits

Lakinda was deeply devoted to her adoptive Xodlak family, striving to prove her worth and bring glory to the family. Although she was a highly skilled tactician, she struggled with remembering names, causing friction between her and the officers on the Midsummer. Lakinda placed great importance on family status and was both humbled and thrilled when Syndic Zistalmu offered her the opportunity to become a Trial-born of the Ruling Irizi family. Ziinda consistently sought adventure and opportunities to prove herself, leading her to join the Expansionary Defense Fleet instead of the Defense Force, to actively seek out threats in the Chaos rather than passively waiting for them to approach the Ascendancy while on guard duty.

Equipment

Ziinda commanded the Grayshrike, a Chiss heavy cruiser.

Behind the scenes

Ziinda made her debut in the 2021 novel Thrawn Ascendancy: Greater Good, penned by Timothy Zahn. Prior to the book's release, the character was introduced in an excerpt from the novel published on StarWars.com on March 4, 2021.
