Imperial Starfighter Corps
The Imperial Starfighter Corps, alternatively called the pilot corps, functioned as the Starfighter Corps division within the Imperial Navy throughout the Galactic Empire's era. Its ranks were filled with TIE fighter pilots in addition to Imperial officers. Despite being an integral part of the Navy, certain pilots were detailed to support ground-based operations alongside the Imperial Army's Air Corps.
Organization
Overview

Serving as the Galactic Empire's Imperial Navy's Starfighter Corps, the Imperial Starfighter Corps had a counterpart in the Imperial Army's Army Air Corps, which also functioned as a Starfighter Corps. The corps primarily consisted of Imperial officers and Imperial Starfighter Pilots. Its military structure included fighter wings, flight groups, squadrons, and flights. A complete attack fighter wing, commanded by a wing commander, comprised six squadrons, totaling seventy-two starships, which represented the full starfighter complement of an Imperial-class Star Destroyer. A flight group had a minimum of sixteen members. A squadron, led by a squadron commander, consisted of twelve starships, further divided into several flights, each under the command of lieutenants.
Fighter wings could function either as a Star Destroyer's starfighter support unit, subordinate to the starship's commander, or as an independent military unit based aboard a Star Destroyer, with the ship and its crew providing operational support. In addition, a single squadron within a fleet could serve as its primary military force, with operations centered around it. Titan Squadron exemplifies this.
Rank structure
The Imperial Starfighter Corps employed a wide array of military ranks, including general, with a wing typically under the command of a colonel who served as Wing Commander. High-ranking commanding officers within the wing included majors, and in at least one instance, a second lieutenant commander served as the squadron leader. The rank of captain was lower, followed by first lieutenant, senior lieutenant, lieutenant, and flight officer. The title of Baron of the Empire, a rare honor, was awarded to certain pilots, who displayed red streaks on their black pilot uniforms. Notable recipients included Valen Rudor, Soontir Fel, and Titan Three of Titan Squadron.
History

Following the Proclamation of the New Order and the transformation of the Galactic Republic into the Galactic Empire, the Imperial Starfighter Corps was formed. The Republic Starfighter Corps, while part of the Republic Navy, was regarded as an independent military entity. Upon becoming the Imperial Starfighter Corps, it was fully integrated into the Imperial Navy's structure. After the Emperor's demise during the Battle of Endor, TIE fighter pilots persisted in their fight for the collapsing Empire, but the regime fragmented into various feuding groups. The Battle of Jakku marked the conclusion of the Galactic Civil War.
Units

The 181st Imperial Fighter Wing was a fighter wing in the Imperial Starfighter Corps, known for the red strips on its ships' wings. The 204th Imperial Fighter Wing, or "Shadow Wing," was an elite fighter wing operating in multiple locations, primarily based on the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer Pursuer. Led by Colonel Shakara Nuress, and later Colonel Soran Keize, it consisted of six squadrons, including Squadron Two, Squadron Three, Squadron Four, Squadron Five, and Squadron Six. The wing comprised several flights, including one led by Lieutenant Palal Seedia. Another fighter wing served as the starfighter complement of the Imperial II-class Star Destroyer Bellicose, and included Beta Squadron. Alpha Flight Group and Omega Flight Group were active within the Corps, participating in various engagements during the Galactic Civil War. Clone Flight Squad Seven also served as a flight group, having originally fought in the Clone Wars under the Galactic Republic.
Numerous squadrons were part of the Corps, including Banshee Squadron from the Imperial-class Star Destroyer Solar Storm, Darth Vader's Black Squadron from the Death Star, Delta Squadron stationed on Lothal, a squadron that defected entirely, Sapphire Squadron, Vixus Squadron, and Yellow Squadron.
The Third Fleet's's flagship, the Star Destroyer Firedrake, deployed Squadron One and Squadron Two. The Seventh Fleet's flagship, the modified Imperial I-class Star Destroyer Chimaera, utilized Defender Squadron One, Squadron Two, Squadron Three, Squadron Four, and Squadron Five. Before becoming the Seventh Fleet's flagship, the Chimaera deployed Special Unit One. Death Squadron, an Imperial naval group, contained a squadron led by Commander Gradd. A TIE squadron was part of the Hunter Fleet commanded by Commander Ellian Zahra.
Elite squadrons deployed during the war included Tempest Squadron, Titan Squadron, and another elite squadron.
Imperial cadet squadrons, such as Carida Squadron from the Carida Academy and Onyx Squadron, were also used in combat and as part of the Corps. Delta Flight was a flight based on Ryloth.

Starfighters
Starfighters were the backbone of the Imperial Starfighter Corps, with models such as the Aggressive ReConnaissance-170 starfighter and the TIE fighter prototype, which paved the way for the TIE fighter series TIE/ln space superiority starfighter. Additional models included the TIE scout, TIE/sr, TIE/rc, TIE/fc, TIE/ag "Aggressor" Starfighter, TIE/ph "Phantom" Multi-Role Stealth Starfighter, and the TIE/sk "Striker" x1 experimental air superiority fighter.
Interceptors
Mainline interceptors included the Eta-2 Actis-class light interceptors and Alpha-3 Nimbus-class V-wing starfighter, succeeded by the TIE/IN interceptor, which had a crimson variant. More sophisticated classes comprised the TIE/d "Defender" Multi-Role Starfighter, TIE/D Defender Elite, TIE Advanced v1, and the TIE Advanced x1. The TIE Avenger was based on advancements following the Advanced x1's prototype. The M3-A Scyk interceptor was also used.
Heavy starfighters and bombers
Heavy starfighters and bombers included the TIE/gt, the predecessor to the TIE/sa Surface Assault Bomber. The TIE/ca capital assault "Punisher" Starfighter was deployed, as was the TIE/rb "Brute" reinforcement battery heavy starfighter.
Large craft
The Imperial Starfighter Corps operated a variety of larger vehicles, including the VT-49 Decimator, TIE Boarding Craft, TIE lander, TIE/rp Reaper attack lander, and the TIE/sh shuttle.
Behind the scenes
The Imperial Starfighter Corps made its debut in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope and was described in Star Wars Propaganda: A History of Persuasive Art in the Galaxy.
