T-series military strategic analysis and tactics droid

The T-series military strategic analysis and tactics droid, an invention of Baktoid Combat Automata, was a tactical droid model also known as the T-series tactical droid, the standard tactical droid, or simply T-1. It was initially designated CDE-T. These droids served the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars, assisting in the coordination of the military by acting as advisors and frequently generals to their organic officers. T-1 units were deployed across the galaxy in significant battles, including those on Christophsis, Ryloth, and the Second Battle of Geonosis.

Possessing a cold, calculating intelligence, T-1 units generally avoided direct combat, preferring to command from Separatist headquarters. They displayed a greater degree of autonomy than their B1-series battle droid counterparts and, while dedicated to the Separatist cause, were willing to sacrifice their superiors to ensure their own survival.

Later in the Clone Wars, the more advanced ST-series military strategic analysis and tactics droid was developed, yet the T-series continued to be utilized until at least 19 BBY. Despite the droid army's galaxy-wide deactivation at the war's conclusion, T-series remnants persisted into the Imperial Era. During the Galactic Civil War, Ahsoka Tano, a former Jedi Padawan, provided the crew of the Ghost with a T-1 head to aid in their search for Rex, a former Clone Captain, on Seelos. Some surviving T-1 droids eventually found a place within the Rebel officer corps.

Description

Tactical droids came in a variety of color schemes.

T-series tactical droids, also known as T-1s, were humanoid tactical droids classified as fourth class units, standing 1.93 meters in height. Baktoid Combat Automata, the same manufacturer responsible for the B1-series battle droid and other war-focused droids, produced them. In contrast to the standard B1 droids under their command, T-1s had a boxier design and often featured different color schemes. Despite the individualized color schemes and voices, the core functionality of each T-1 remained consistent.

T-1s were engineered to stay away from the front lines, instead calculating battle strategies from the safety of flagships or other secure locations. They frequently expressed a sense of superiority over other droid models due to their high-ranking positions within the military structure. They were known to sacrifice large numbers of troops if they were deemed expendable, and would abandon superior officers if ordered in order to survive. Furthermore, their dependence on precise calculations led to a lack of adaptability in unexpected situations, a weakness that the Galactic Republic exploited during the Clone Wars. While rarely seen in direct combat, some T-series units were observed wielding E-5 blaster rifles.

History

Clone Wars

Prior to the outbreak of the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, T-series tactical droids were introduced under the designation CDE-T. Once the war began, the T-1 became a crucial advisory component within the Confederacy's forces. Their high intelligence led to them being granted complete authority over Separatist military forces by their commanding officers. These droids were deployed in numerous early war battles, including the Battle of Christophsis, serving as both commanders of the Separatist Droid Army and the Confederacy navy. In 22 BBY, at least three T-series tactical droids saw action during the Christophsis campaign. TI-99 served Harch Admiral Trench on his flagship, the Invincible, bolstering the Separatist blockade orbiting the planet. Additionally, TJ-55 and his battalion of droids successfully countered a Republic ambush in the capital city of Chaleydonia, while another T-1 operated under the command of Supreme Leader Asajj Ventress.

During the Battle of Ryloth, TX-20 exemplified the T-series' capacity for ruthlessness in the Separatist defense of Nabat. He used the city's inhabitants as human shields against the Republic's clone troopers, preventing the use of explosives within Nabat. However, TX-20's hubris led him to underestimate Obi-Wan Kenobi and his Twi'lek prisoners, ultimately costing him his life. TA-175 also served the Separatists during the Ryloth campaign, acting as an adviser to Emir Wat Tambor following TX-20's demise. From his base in Lessu, Ryloth's capital, he recognized the threat posed by the Republic presence. When Count Dooku ordered Tambor to retreat, TA-175 readily complied with the Sith Lord's directive. He later undermined Tambor's command during an attack on the capital by forces led by Mace Windu and Cham Syndulla, leaving the emir to be captured. One T-series tactical droid was eventually held as a prisoner within the Republic Center for Military Operations.

To address the T-series' inflexibility, the ST-series military strategic analysis and tactics droid model was introduced as an improved successor later in the war. These newer droids were larger, more durable, and considered themselves superior to organic beings. While many T-1 units were upgraded, the T-series continued to see limited service even after the super tactical droid's introduction; for example, several served during the Battle of Anaxes in 19 BBY. One such droid reported directly to Admiral Trench, the Separatist commander in that campaign.

Age of the Empire

The head of a T-series tactical droid sought by the Martez sisters and Clone Force 99.

As the Clone Wars drew to a close, Darth Vader, now a Sith Lord, relayed a message from Darth Sidious to the Trade Federation calling for the deactivation of the Separatist Droid Army, including all T-series models. With the Galactic Empire's rise, the tactical data accumulated by T-series droids became valuable to factions opposing the clone troopers of the Imperial Military. Trace and Rafa Martez were part of such a group, tasked with retrieving a T-series tactical droid from a decommissioning facility in Coronet City on Corellia. Clone Force 99 was also hired for the same purpose by Ciddarin Scaleback, a Trandoshan informant and former Jedi contact during the Clone Wars, in exchange for monetary compensation.

The two groups clashed at the facility, with the Martez sisters securing the head of the last T-1 before the Bad Batch could. Surrounded by Imperial Police Droids, the factions were forced to cooperate to survive. Tech, the Bad Batch's technician, accessed the T-1's programming via a data rod and transmitted an activation signal to other battle droids in the facility, using them as reinforcements. During their escape, the tactical droid's head was destroyed, but Tech had copied its intel onto the data rod. Hunter, the squad's sergeant, gave the intel to the Martez sisters, believing it would be more useful to them.

One T-1 series tactical droid was reactivated and served as the military commander of a Separatist holdout on Desix, led by Governor Tawni Ames, commanding numerous B1 battle droids, commando droids, droidekas and an AAT. When Imperial forces arrived to conquer Desix, the tactical droid stayed with Ames and their Imperial hostage, Grotton, in the city's bell tower and commanded the battle from afar. Though it was able to direct its forces effectively enough to shoot down the Imperial shuttle and deal casualties to the opposing forces, the tactical droid was eventually destroyed by Crosshair and without its leadership, the remaining droid forces crumbled and Desix fell under Imperial control.

By the time of the Galactic Civil War, T-1s were rarely encountered. However, Ahsoka Tano, a former Jedi Padawan and key member of the Phoenix rebel cell, acquired a T-1 head. In 4 BBY, she provided it to the Spectres to aid in their search for her friend Rex, a former Clone Captain, on Seelos. Sabine Wren repaired the head, restoring its power, and it scanned for a signal while repeatedly reciting the numbers 7567. These numbers were Captain Rex's former clone trooper designation, and the Spectres used them to locate a modified AT-TE, Rex's new home and the signal's source. Ultimately, the few remaining T-series units that were still operational became integrated into the Rebel officer corps.

Behind the scenes

An early concept for the original trilogy, which ultimately became the tactical droid.

The T-series tactical droids made their debut in "Jedi Crash"[/article/jedi_crash], the thirteenth episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars' first season. However, they first appeared in Innocents of Ryloth, the twentieth episode of the first season. Throughout the series, various actors provided voices for the droids, including Matt Lanter, James Arnold Taylor, Ashley Eckstein, and Matthew Wood.

These droids were conceived to provide a recurring, competent antagonist without requiring the introduction and subsequent removal of unique organic commanders. Their modulated voice pattern was partly inspired by the voices of the Cylons from the original Battlestar Galactica series. The word "tactical" was also written in Aurebesh on the side of at least one tactical droid's head.
