Gilad Pellaeon
Gilad Pellaeon, a human male originating from the Corellian planet of Corellia, held the rank of captain within the Imperial Navy during the Galactic Empire's imperial_era. Serving in the 96th Task Force under the command of Admiral Thrawn, he participated in select Imperial gatherings, seeking out promising individuals for recruitment into Thrawn's service. One such recruit was Magistrate Morgan Elsbeth of Corvus, whom Pellaeon encountered when she presented her TIE Defender designs to a group of Imperial officers. Later, Pellaeon was reassigned to Grand Admiral Balanhai Savit's Third Fleet, assuming command of the Imperial Star Destroyer Harbinger. When Savit was revealed as a traitor stealing components from Project Stardust, Pellaeon sided with Commodore Karyn Faro to apprehend his superior.
Following Savit's removal, Pellaeon and the Harbinger were redeployed to support Thrawn's Seventh Fleet. Alongside Thrawn, who had by then become a Grand Admiral, Pellaeon participated in the Imperial blockade of Lothal until Spectres and their allies liberated it in 1 BBY. During this liberation, rebel forces destroyed all Imperial starships present with the aid of spacefaring purrgil. Pellaeon's communication with Thrawn was abruptly cut off. Although Pellaeon survived, Thrawn vanished when the purrgil dragged his flagship, the Chimaera, into hyperspace.
Pellaeon continued to fight in the Galactic Civil War against the Rebel Alliance and retreated into hiding after the Empire's defeat. As the Alliance transitioned into the New Republic, the Empire fragmented into various holdouts. Pellaeon, along with other Imperial Remnant warlords like Moff Gideon and Commandant Brendol Hux, established the Shadow Council to secretly coordinate efforts to reinstate the Empire. Representing his own delegation, Pellaeon believed Thrawn's return and leadership would revitalize the Imperial Military, a view met with skepticism by Gideon. In a Council meeting around 9 ABY, Pellaeon and Hux agreed to reinforce Gideon's forces in an unsuccessful attempt to thwart the Mandalorians' plan to retake their homeworld, Mandalore.
Biography
Serving Admiral Thrawn

Gilad Pellaeon, a human male hailing from the Core Worlds planet Corellia, served as a captain in the Imperial Navy during the Galactic Empire's reign. He was part of Admiral Thrawn's 96th Task Force. Under Thrawn's orders, Pellaeon attended select Imperial gatherings, looking for individuals with a shared vision. Between 9 BBY and 2 BBY, Pellaeon attended one such gathering aboard an Imperial-class Star Destroyer above Coruscant. There, he witnessed Morgan Elsbeth, the magistrate of Corvus, present her designs for the advanced starfighter, the TIE Defender, hoping to secure a production deal with the Empire.
While Pellaeon was impressed by Elsbeth's work, Moff Isdain abruptly ended her negotiation, intending to forcibly seize Corvus's resources for the Empire. After Isdain and other officers left, Pellaeon approached Elsbeth, praising her work and inquiring about the engine manifold modification. Reassuring Elsbeth of his genuine interest, he questioned her decision to offer her services to the Empire. Elsbeth responded with a standard answer about serving "the glory of the Empire," which Pellaeon acknowledged before thanking her and departing.

Pellaeon later informed Thrawn about Elsbeth, prompting Thrawn to travel to Calodan, the capital city of Corvus, with Pellaeon to meet her. They first assessed Elsbeth's combat skills by sending the Noghri assassin Rukh to attack her on the city's rampart. After Elsbeth defeated Rukh, Pellaeon approached, commending her and dismissing Rukh. He explained the skirmish was a test and expressed his eagerness to collaborate, leaving Thrawn to welcome Elsbeth into his service.
Assignment to the Third Fleet

Later, Pellaeon was assigned to Grand Admiral Balanhai Savit's Third Fleet as the commanding officer of the Star Destroyer Harbinger, though Savit doubted Pellaeon's loyalty. During the fleet's anti-piracy campaign in the Esaga sector in 1 BBY, Savit ordered Pellaeon and his first officer to discuss a pirate-hunting mission. Unbeknownst to Pellaeon, Savit had hired the pirates to steal components from Project Stardust, the Empire's Death Star superweapon project.
Soon after, Thrawn, now a Grand Admiral of the Seventh Fleet, sought to remove Savit by exposing his treachery. He requested Savit to hand over the captive Assistant Director Brierly Ronan and provided rendezvous coordinates. Savit traveled to the designated star system with four Star Destroyers, including Pellaeon's Harbinger, meeting with Thrawn's flagship, the Chimaera, commanded by Commodore Karyn Faro. Suspecting an ambush, Savit sent the Harbinger to sweep a nearby space station used by his pirates, keeping Pellaeon away from potential conflict. Savit allowed Pellaeon to send boarding parties, which Pellaeon used to dispatch an advance survey team, though Savit later ignored Pellaeon's report. Meanwhile, Faro transmitted evidence of Savit's involvement with the pirates to the Third Fleet.
Shortly after, Savit's remaining Star Destroyers engaged the Chimaera. Pellaeon reviewed the evidence and concluded an official inquiry was justified. He called for Savit's surrender, asking Captains Lochry and Rasdel to join him, and placed the Harbinger under Faro's command. Following Savit's arrest, Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin reassigned Pellaeon and the Harbinger to the Seventh Fleet, believing Pellaeon could aid Thrawn's struggle against the Lothalite insurgents. On Thrawn's order, Faro contacted Pellaeon and arranged a rendezvous with Thrawn's fleet at Lothal.
Imperial blockade of Lothal and continuing the fight

Later in 1 BBY, Pellaeon participated in the Empire's orbital blockade of Lothal as part of Thrawn's fleet. However, the blockade failed to prevent a group of rebels, led by Jedi Padawan Ezra Bridger of the Spectres, from launching an attack that liberated the planet.
While Thrawn dealt with the rebels on the surface, he learned the blockade was destroyed by unidentified objects. He contacted Pellaeon for information, and Pellaeon reported that the attackers came out of hyperspace before communication was severed. Thrawn then discovered Imperial vessels were destroyed by purrgil, massive, whalelike creatures capable of hyperspace travel, as part of Bridger's attack. Pellaeon survived, but Thrawn and Bridger went missing when the Chimaera was carried into hyperspace by the purrgil, stranding Thrawn in a far galaxy. The Empire never returned to Lothal. Following Thrawn's disappearance, Pellaeon continued to fight against the Rebel Alliance during the Galactic Civil War, and his promotion was stalled as some Imperials wanted Thrawn's legacy to be a failure.
New Republic Era

After the Empire's loss to the Rebel Alliance, now the New Republic, and the apparent death of Emperor Sheev Palpatine at the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, the Empire fragmented. Pellaeon went into hiding and formed the secret Shadow Council with other Imperial loyalists, consisting of remnant Imperial warlords wanted by the Republic, aiming to restore the Empire. Pellaeon represented his delegation, operating in a specific sector of the galaxy. He and Commandant Brendol Hux controlled significant resources.
Around 9 ABY, Pellaeon attended a Shadow Council meeting via hologram, warning an Imperial warlord about their hit-and-run operations plundering hyperspace lanes, believing they attracted too much New Republic attention. While others favored demonstrating power, Pellaeon advised caution until Thrawn's return, which he believed would revive the Imperial Military and allow completion of Project Necromancer supervised by Hux.

Moff Gideon doubted Pellaeon's claims about Thrawn's return, suggesting a new leader, which some warlords supported, displeasing Pellaeon. During the meeting, Hux and Pellaeon reviewed Gideon's request for reinforcements, including three Praetorian Guards, TIE interceptors, and TIE bombers.
Although Pellaeon initially mocked Gideon's request for guards, he was concerned about the Mandalorians, legendary warriors preparing to reclaim their homeworld of Mandalore. Fearing a Mandalorian resurgence, Pellaeon and Hux approved Gideon's request. Gideon promised victory, uttering "Long live the Empire," echoed by the council. Despite the support, Gideon failed to stop the Mandalorians, costing him his life. Later, Thrawn returned from his exile thanks to Elsbeth, as Pellaeon had hoped.
Legacy
In 35 ABY, historian Beaumont Kin mentioned Pellaeon in The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire, discussing the Imperial fleet and its engagements. Kin noted Pellaeon's lack of promotion after Lothal compared to others under Thrawn, suggesting some wanted Thrawn's legacy to be a failure, and Pellaeon was passed over due to their decisions.
Personality and traits

Gilad Pellaeon had blue eyes, light skin, and white hair with a mustache. By 2 BBY, he appeared elderly. In Thrawn's 96th Task Force, Pellaeon was intrigued by Elsbeth after her TIE Defender presentation, seeing her as an asset. He was impressed by her combat skills against Rukh and indicated his interest in working with her while tipping his kepi.
As an Imperial officer, Pellaeon's loyalty was to the Empire, not any individual commander. After evidence suggested Grand Admiral Savit's treason, Pellaeon turned against him and demanded his surrender. During the Liberation of Lothal, Pellaeon was astonished by the purrgil swarm emerging from hyperspace and attacking the Imperial blockade.
After the Empire's fall, Pellaeon remained loyal, working for the Imperial remnants. While he saw the New Republic as vulnerable, he believed Imperial forces should be discreet and not reveal their coordination. Pellaeon desired Thrawn's leadership and saw his return as their only hope.
Skills and abilities

Gilad Pellaeon was a capable military officer recognized by Grand Admiral Savit and Grand Moff Tarkin. He understood starfighter mechanics, appreciating Elsbeth's TIE Defender schematics. He was also fluent in Galactic Basic Standard.
Equipment
Pellaeon wore a gray Imperial officer's uniform with an Imperial kepi, black gloves, and a black belt. His kepi and belt buckle featured an officer's disk. His tunic had code cylinders and a rank insignia plaque with three squares followed by a blue square. In the New Republic Era, his rank plaque had three red squares over three blue squares, and his tunic featured the emblem of the Seventh Fleet.
Behind the scenes
Reintroduction into Star Wars canon

The animated series Star Wars Rebels brought Gilad Pellaeon back into Star Wars canon. His reintroduction occurred in the series finale, "Family Reunion – and Farewell," which was written and produced by Dave Filoni and his team, and initially broadcast on March 5, 2018. Jim Cummings, the voice actor for Hondo Ohnaka in the same series, provided the voice for Pellaeon. Timothy Zahn, the original creator of the character in Star Wars Legends, was not notified about Pellaeon's inclusion in Star Wars Rebels ahead of time. However, Zahn later incorporated the character into his 2019 novel, Thrawn: Treason, which restored Pellaeon's first name, "Gilad," to canon.
Pellaeon's live-action debut occurred in "Chapter 23: The Spies," the seventh episode of The Mandalorian's third season, a Disney+ original series. This episode, penned by Filoni and Jon Favreau, premiered on April 12, 2023, and featured Pellaeon in hologram form. Xander Berkeley portrayed Pellaeon in this episode, and Zahn praised his performance. Berkeley altered his appearance by shaving his beard while maintaining his mustache to accurately portray Pellaeon, based on the character's depiction in Star Wars Legends materials. Berkeley also voiced Pellaeon in "The Path of Anger," the second episode of the Star Wars: Tales of the Empire animated anthology, which was released on May 4, 2024. On May 4, 2025, Berkeley celebrated by sharing images on his Instagram account showing him in Pellaeon's costume, alongside a Vintage Collection figure of the Legends version of Pellaeon.
Additional Canon Information and Storylines

Filoni has mentioned that one of his favorite aspects of his work is incorporating Legends characters, such as Pellaeon, into the official canon. According to Filoni, including Pellaeon in Star Wars Rebels functions as an Easter egg for fans familiar with the Expanded Universe and provides opportunities for other writers to develop new canonical narratives for the character, something that would not necessarily be possible by creating a new character with a new name. Before The Mandalorian confirmed the character's survival, Filoni suggested that Pellaeon had somehow survived the events of the Star Wars Rebels finale, arguing that the character should not be casually killed off by a purrgil, and expressed his hope that other writers would continue Pellaeon's story. He later alluded to the possibility of a reunion between Pellaeon and Thrawn in future stories set in the New Republic era, following the events of the first season of Ahsoka, the 2023 live-action series he created.
In Star Wars Insider 222, published by Titan Magazines on October 31, 2023, as part of the magazine's regular "Jedi Master's Quiz" feature, a trivia question incorrectly identified Pellaeon as an admiral in one of the incorrect answer options. According to the Imperial rank chart in Star Wars: Dawn of Rebellion: The Visual Guide, a 2023 reference book authored by Pablo Hidalgo and Emily Shkoukani, the insignia plaque seen in "The Path of Anger" indicates the rank of army captain. However, given that the 96th Task Force was a naval unit and Pellaeon is depicted as a captain in the Imperial Navy in his other appearances, this article assumes he held the rank of naval captain at that time.
Origins within Star Wars Legends continuity

Gilad Pellaeon was first introduced in Heir to the Empire, a 1991 Star Wars Legends novel and the initial installment of The Thrawn Trilogy written by Timothy Zahn. Zahn named the character after Pelleas, a knight from the legends of King Arthur. The reference book The Essential Guide to Characters, published in 1995 and written by Andy Mangels, established his first name as "Gilad." Allen Nunis and Xeno Beckwith provided the first illustrations of Pellaeon in Heir to the Empire Sourcebook, a 1992 roleplaying supplement and companion reference to Zahn's novel published by West End Games for Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game.
In these Legends stories, Captain Pellaeon was a significant military officer who served as the second-in-command to Grand Admiral Thrawn during Thrawn's campaign against the New Republic after the Battle of Endor. Pellaeon also had a crucial role in many other Legends narratives, as he was the founding leader of the Imperial Remnant and signed the peace treaty with the New Republic, bringing an end to the Galactic Civil War. Through his numerous appearances spanning two decades, Pellaeon became a beloved character within the Legends continuity.
