Brendol Hux

Brendol Hux was a human male who was a member of the Galactic Empire. Before his time in the Empire, Hux was a junior officer within the ranks of the Grand Army of the Republic, where he relayed the plans and strategies created by Jedi Generals. He served as the commandant of the Arkanis Academy four years prior to the Battle of Yavin. Within the academy, Hux established the Commandant's Cadets, a clandestine group composed of carefully selected cadets.

Following the Imperial defeat on Endor, he found himself trapped by the forces of the New Republic during the Siege of Arkanis. However, he managed to escape with the assistance of bounty hunter Mercurial Swift, acting under the orders of Fleet Admiral Gallius Rax, who then appointed him to the newly formed Shadow Council. Eventually, he fathered an out-of-wedlock son, Armitage, who would later rise to the rank of general in the First Order, becoming one of its initial leaders.

Biography

Serving the Republic and Empire

Hux held the Jedi Order in high regard, particularly their members who underwent warrior training from an early age.

Brendol Hux came into existence before the Clone Wars began. During that time, Hux served as a junior officer in the Grand Army of the Republic, where he was responsible for communicating the strategies and tactics developed by the Galactic Republic's Jedi Generals. Hux was impressed by the combat skills and unwavering commitment of both the Republic's clone troopers and the Jedi Order, who had been rigorously trained as soldiers and warriors since their youth. After the Republic was transformed into the Galactic Empire, Hux remained in service to the Imperial Military and was eventually reassigned to the Imperial Academy located on Arkanis. To assist with the operation of the Academy, Hux also employed a servant droid called DDM-38, also known as DeeDee, whose primary task was to maintain discipline among the cadets. Dissatisfied with the quality of the Empire's stormtroopers, who were recruited from the general human population, Hux came up with the concept of training stormtrooper recruits from infancy, believing that this would produce superior soldiers and more loyal servants of the Empire.

Finding it difficult to gain support for his ideas from other officers, Hux resolved to create his own dedicated group of officers from among the Imperial cadets at the Arkanis Academy. He eventually succeeded in establishing a clandestine organization known as the Commandant's Cadets, which operated independently of the official Imperial command structure. To gain membership in the Commandant's Cadets, candidates were required to end the life of a fellow cadet while making it appear to be an accident. As a consequence, several cadets met their demise in suspicious circumstances during training exercises. Members of the Commandant's Cadets received special benefits, including the privilege of sitting at a designated table in the Academy's dining hall. Approximately four years before the Battle of Yavin, Hux had enlisted at least ten individuals into the Commandant's Cadets, including Orman le Hivre and Rav Horan.

Age of the Empire

Forging young officers

Not long after, a promising young cadet from Lothal by the name of Zare Leonis was transferred to the Arkanis Academy, supposedly as a "reward" for his loyalty to the Empire. However, this was a deception orchestrated by the Grand Inquisitor, who sought to investigate Zare's connections to Dev Morgan's rebel cell. In reality, Leonis was secretly sympathetic to the rebellion and had enrolled in the Academy to locate his sister Dhara Leonis, who had been forcibly recruited by the Grand Inquisitor into Project Harvester, which was based in Area Null, a secluded tower connected to the Arkanis Academy.

Zare Leonis went undercover at the Arkanis Academy in order to find his sister.

Following Leonis' arrival, Hux identified Anya Razar as a potential recruit for the Commandant's Cadets. Subsequently, Anya was put in charge of a five-member scouting mission during a field exercise that included Leonis, Penn Zarang, Tigard Manes, Chan Harra, and Xan Lanier, a Cadet with poor performance who had been targeted for elimination by the Commandant's Cadets. As part of the field exercise, the cadets and their diplopod mounts were required to advance while under live fire. During the exercise, Lanier was killed in an explosion that also claimed the lives of his and Leonis' diplopod mounts. Lanier's death was subsequently covered up, and Razar was formally inducted into the Commandant's Cadets during a nighttime ceremony at Area Null. When Leonis attempted to follow Razar and the Commandant's Cadets into the tower, he was stopped by DeeDee, who issued him demerits.

After Razar's induction, Commandant Hux organized an assembly in the banquet hall, followed by dinner. During the dinner, the Commandant was visited by the Grand Inquisitor, who engaged in a private conversation with Hux. Leonis observed the meeting and noticed that the two Imperial officials were arguing. When the Inquisitor noticed Leonis watching them, he stopped arguing with Hux. After the dinner, the Grand Inquisitor summoned Leonis for a private meeting on the Commandant's balcony, with Hux's permission. During the meeting, the Inquisitor warned Leonis that he was close to uncovering his secret connection to the Spectres. Before he could interrogate Leonis further, he was called away for an urgent mission to Lothal, which ultimately led to his death.

A few days later, Commandant Hux, with DeeDee's assistance, gathered the Academy's cadets at the edge of a cliff overlooking a nearby beach. A nerf calf had wandered from the Academy's grounds to search the beach for salt and was subsequently devoured by a sea monster. Hux seized the opportunity to lecture the cadets about the importance of training and asked them to propose solutions to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. When Tigard Manes suggested a gate, the Commandant replied that gates would delay those who needed to access the sea and reminded the cadets that they could not isolate themselves from all the dangers of the galaxy. He then challenged the other cadets to come up with alternative ideas.

When other cadets suggested drone monitors and shock fields, Hux rejected them. However, he welcomed Le Hivre's suggestion that they should allow natural selection to eliminate those nerfs that had a craving for salt. Hux then asked his cadets if they could devise a more proactive solution than simply allowing nature to take its course. When Leonis suggested buying salt for the nerfs, Hux responded that indulging their weaknesses would prevent the development of a strong herd. After Leonis argued that buying salt was preferable to dead nerfs, Hux used the opportunity to lecture the cadets that the best solution was to train the nerfs to avoid the beach. Anya then pointed out that only the juvenile nerfs craved salt. Hux reiterated that they had to train the nerf herd from a young age to avoid the beach. Having made his point, Hux then informed the cadets that they would be embarking on a training exercise on the planet Sirpar the following day, which he considered an ideal testing ground for officers.

The rebel infiltrator

Following the demanding three-day exercise on Sirpar, Le Hivre identified Leonis as another potential candidate for the Commandant's Cadets and informed the Commandant. The conclusion of the Sirpar training exercise also coincided with the arrival of Lieutenant Chiron, an instructor at Lothal's Academy for Young Imperials, who had been transferred due to a shake-up in the Academy's leadership. Unbeknownst to Hux, Chiron had been dispatched by Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin to investigate rumors that Hux had established a secret society outside the official Imperial chain of command. Using his position as a prospective Commandant's Cadet, Leonis offered to assist Chiron in investigating the Commandant's Cadets.

Hux declared that Leonis would be initiated, but Leonis was focused on rescuing his sister.

After Leonis discovered that he was required to kill a fellow Cadet named Penn Zarang to become a member of the Commandant's Cadets, he informed Chiron, who helped stage Zarang's death. After burying a rotten piece of nerf in "Zarang's" grave, Chiron arranged for Zarang to go into hiding. This deception satisfied Le Hivre and Anya, who subsequently informed Commandant Hux. One evening, Hux invited Leonis to attend a formal dinner with the other Commandant's Cadets. During the dinner, Hux described his vision for the Empire and explained how the Commandant's Cadets would help bring it to fruition. Following the dinner, Hux announced that they would be initiating Leonis into the organization. The initiation ceremony was scheduled to take place at Area Null.

Before they could enter the building, another group was exiting the ceremonial room. This group turned out to be former dissidents who had been enrolled in an Imperial re-education program known as Project Unity. One of the participants was Beck Ollet, one of Zare's former classmates on Lothal and a rebel sympathizer. He immediately identified Leonis as a rebel infiltrator. As a result, Leonis was interrogated and subsequently confessed to working with Dev Morgan and his rebel cell. However, he withheld any information about Chiron's secret investigation into the Commandant's Cadets.

Leonis was subjected to a military tribunal with Colonel Julyan, an instructor at the Arkanis Academy, serving as both the judge and prosecutor. Commandant Hux, DeeDee, and the Commandant's Cadets attended the proceedings and witnessed Leonis acknowledging his involvement in the rebellion and pleading guilty to various charges, including fraudulent enlistment, aiding the Empire's enemies, sedition, and treason. Hux and the Commandant's Cadets also listened to Leonis' speech denouncing the Empire but remained unmoved by it. At the conclusion of the trial, Colonel Julyan expelled Leonis from military service and sentenced him to death. However, Leonis and his sister Dhara escaped due to a rescue mission launched by Dev Morgan's rebel associates and Leonis' girlfriend Merei Spanjaf.

Joining the Shadow Council

At some point, Hux, despite being married to Maratelle, had an extramarital affair with a "kitchen woman," resulting in the birth of an illegitimate son named Armitage. Hux would go on to mistreat his son on numerous occasions, expressing his disappointment through both verbal and physical abuse.

Following the Battle of Endor, Arkanis was under siege by the newly established New Republic, the successor to the Rebel Alliance that Leonis' allies had helped create, and was in imminent danger of falling. However, Fleet Admiral Gallius Rax, determined to revive the Empire, instructed his de-facto subordinate Grand Admiral Rae Sloane to "rescue" the Commandant from the besieged planet. Rax intended to form a Shadow Council to take the place of the Imperial Ruling Council and facilitate the Empire's resurgence. Sloane then commissioned bounty hunter Mercurial Swift to ensure the safe extraction of Hux and his son from Arkanis, which he successfully accomplished.

Swift transported Hux and his son to the Vulpinus Nebula, where Sloane commanded a substantial Imperial fleet. Following his rescue, Hux attended a dinner aboard the Super Star Destroyer Ravager with Grand Admiral Sloane, Grand Moff Randd, General Hodnar Borrum, and the Imperial propagandist Ferric Obdur. When Sloane expressed her relief that they had evacuated him from Arkanis, he responded that the Arkanis Academy was his life's work, producing the finest cadets in the Empire. Randd reassured Hux that they would recover and retaliate.

When Hux interrupted Sloane by lamenting the difficult times facing the Empire, Sloane changed the subject to Hux's illegitimate son. Hux described Armitage as a weak-willed boy but insisted that he possessed potential. Despite Hux's assurances, the other delegates chuckled. After Fleet Admiral Rax entered the room and announced that the Shadow Council would serve as his brain trust, Hux questioned the value of propaganda when the Empire needed personnel, ships, and vehicles on the ground. Rax responded by revealing that he commanded other Imperial fleets in the Almagest, the Recluse's Nebula, the Ro-Loo Triangle, and the Inamorata nebulae. Hux then outlined his strategy for fighting back against the New Republic.

Following the disappearance of Grand Admiral Sloane during the attack on the New Republic capital Chandrila, Hux and his fellow Shadow Council members attended a meeting led by Rax. After Rax assured the delegates that they would do everything possible to retrieve Sloane, Hux inquired whether she had been informed about the attack on Chandrila. Rax, who had secretly ordered Sloane's assassination, falsely claimed that she had been. Rax then informed the Shadow Council that he had ordered the Imperial fleets to travel to the desert planet of Jakku in the Western Reaches. He also declared himself Counselor to the Empire. In secret, Rax planned to use the upcoming battle to eliminate the other Shadow Council members, with the exception of Hux.

Serving Counselor Rax

Brendol Hux was on Jakku during the decisive Battle of Jakku

For several months, the Imperials on Jakku awaited their confrontation with the New Republic. Although Norra Wexley and her team discovered Rax's Imperial armada, the New Republic delayed deploying its military forces due to a stalemate in the Galactic Senate. During that time, Brendol Hux trained at least two dozen local orphans and children to serve as Gallius Rax's personal guard of child soldiers. These children had been abducted by Niima the Hutt, who had formed an alliance with Rax.

Since Hux was not a member of either the Imperial Army or the Imperial Navy, he was unpopular among the other Imperials on Jakku. Hux also subjected his son Armitage to emotional and physical abuse, causing the boy to avoid his father. In the days leading up to the Battle of Jakku, Counselor Rax summoned Hux and inquired about the training progress of his new recruits. When Hux requested more time, Rax told him to prove himself, promising to reveal the secret Contingency plan. When Hux expressed confusion, Rax warned that his failure would be punished by being forced to spend the rest of his days wandering the deserts of Jakku. In order to please Rax, Hux replied that he would do whatever Rax asked.

Rax's child soldiers assassinated the propagandist Ferric Obdur aboard the Ravager. After Sloane and the rebel Brentin Lore Wexley had been captured, Hux led Rax's child soldiers to a hangar where several stormtroopers were present. Hux witnessed Rax giving the order for the child soldiers to kill the stormtroopers. Following the massacre, Rax announced that he was bringing about the destruction of the "Old Empire." Pleased with Hux's competence, Counselor Rax ordered Hux and the child soldiers to escort Sloane and Wexley to a tent to observe the Battle of Jakku.

During the Battle of Jakku, Hux, his son Armitage, the Adviser Yupe Tashu, and the child soldiers traveled on a transport to the Jakku Observatory, a secret facility that housed a replica of the late Emperor's luxury yacht Imperialis, a computerized map of the Unknown Regions, and a deep borehole leading to Jakku's core. Before his death, the late Emperor had tasked Gallius Rax with executing the Contingency plan to destroy the Empire should it outlive him. Rax planned to take Hux and several other select Imperials into the Unknown Regions to rebuild the Empire.

In the Unknown Regions

Hux and Sloane (pictured) formed a fragile alliance to rebuild the Empire

Upon disembarking, Rax instructed Hux to take his son and the child soldiers aboard the Imperialis while he and Tashu went to trigger Jakku's destruction. When Hux attempted to question him, Rax told him to trust him. Rax ultimately killed Tashu before being killed by Sloane with the assistance of the rebels Norra Wexley and her husband Brentin Lore Wexley. Sloane managed to disable Jakku's self-destruct mechanism before fleeing aboard the Imperialis with the Huxes and the child soldiers. At the urging of the dying Rax, Sloane had decided to venture into the Unknown Regions to rebuild a more resilient version of the Empire.

Using a series of secure coordinates stored inside a dataspike, the Imperialis traveled through the Unknown Regions for several months. During the journey, Grand Admiral Sloane befriended Hux's son Armitage and promised to protect the boy from his abusive father. Sloane found a despondent Brendol in his room and showed him Rax's bloody cape and the data spike containing the map coordinates. Despite their mutual animosity, Sloane sought to forge an alliance so that they could rebuild the Empire. Hux attempted to strangle Sloane, but the Grand Admiral was a skilled martial artist and overpowered him. Using the threat of physical force, Sloane then ordered Hux to work for her. She also warned him to stop mistreating Armitage and to teach him everything he knew about the Empire. After sobbing, Hux nodded his head in agreement.

For the remainder of the journey, Brendol bided his time by training his son and Rax's child soldiers in combat. During that time, Hux trimmed his hair and beard and lost some of his excess weight. Several months after the Battle of Jakku, the Imperialis rendezvoused with the Super Star Destroyer Eclipse, which Rax had sent earlier into the Unknown Regions as part of the Contingency. As they approached the Eclipse, Hux expressed his support for Sloane's plan to rebuild the Empire and remarked "glory be to Grand Admiral Sloane." Sloane responded by correcting him that glory only belonged to the Empire.

In Rax's absence, Grand Vizier Mas Amedda sued for peace and signed the Galactic Concordance with the New Republic, officially dissolving the Empire and ending the Galactic Civil War. With the Empire reduced to a remnant constrained by harsh war reparations and strict disarmament treaties, the New Republic turned its attention to reshaping the galactic order. Meanwhile, with Brendol Hux and Armitage in exile as part of the Imperial exodus that fled the known galaxy into the Unknown Regions, the elder Hux regaled his son with tales of great Imperials and how the Empire had saved the galaxy from the violence of the Clone Wars. With the Unknown Regions Imperial remnant operating in secrecy, it transformed into the First Order, of which Hux and his son became members.

Awaiting Thrawn

Hux participated in a Shadow Council meeting via hologram

Around 9 ABY, Hux attended a holographic meeting of the Shadow Council alongside other warlords, including Moff Gideon and Captain Gilad Pellaeon, to discuss whether they should attack the vulnerable New Republic or continue waiting for Grand Admiral Thrawn's return, as Captain Pellaeon suggested. Hux clashed with Pellaeon over his unwavering belief in Thrawn's plans, expressing his desire to proceed with the enigmatic Project Necromancer instead. However, Gideon criticized both men for wasting their resources and proposed that the Council should properly reorganize and seize control of the galaxy under his leadership.

In response, Hux inquired about Gideon's cloning experiments involving Doctor Penn Pershing on Nevarro, but Gideon declined to comment and instead warned the warlords about the growing threat of the Mandalorians, who could potentially hinder their efforts if not dealt with promptly. This prompted Hux and his fellow warlords to review his requests and dispatch three Imperial Praetorian Guards, TIE/IN interceptors, and TIE bombers to reinforce Gideon's forces. All of them, including Hux, concluded the meeting by reciting the phrase "Long live the Empire."

First Order

Cardinal, one of Brendol's most promising stormtroopers

Following the Galactic Concordance, many individuals residing on Arkanis engaged in conjecture regarding the circumstances surrounding Hux's vanishing act. While certain individuals asserted his capitulation, others, such as the First Order-aligned New Republic Senator Lady Carise Sindian, posited that a luminary of the Empire would not have surrendered in such a humiliating fashion. Despite the fact that her First Order contacts had not divulged the specifics of Hux's fate, she surmised that he was clandestinely providing assistance to their cause.

Brendol ascended to the rank of General within the First Order Army. Furthermore, Hux oversaw the First Order's stormtrooper training initiatives and enlisted children for indoctrination into the First Order. Moreover, Hux designated a promising cadet by the name of CD-0992 as his personal guard of honor, bestowing upon him a suit of crimson armor. Hux christened him "Cardinal" and even served him alcoholic beverages, a practice inconsistent with First Order regulations. Jointly, Hux and Cardinal presided over the First Order's stormtrooper training program, which was headquartered aboard the Resurgent-class Star Destroyer Absolution.

In due course, an individual identified as Snoke assumed control of the First Order, thereby becoming its Supreme Leader. General Hux, now among the last remnants of the former Imperial leadership, did not anticipate Snoke's rise to power and was notably taken aback by its occurrence. This transpired as Snoke marginalized, assimilated, or eliminated numerous erstwhile leaders, while others, including Brendol and his son Armitage Hux, were spared by Snoke to be strategically utilized in his ascent to dominance. Brendol Hux maintained correspondence with Snoke, dispatching transmissions that Snoke received through a droid under his control. On one occasion, Hux attempted to transmit a message to Snoke while the latter was situated on the Amaxine space station with Ben Solo, but Snoke instructed his droid to inform Brendol that any matters requiring attention would have to be deferred due to his engagement in a highly significant conversation. Solo inquired of Snoke regarding Hux's identity, to which Snoke merely responded that he had associates beyond Solo.

Mission to Parnassos

In the year 24 ABY, General Brendol Hux, at this point in his career, commanded a mission directed towards the planet Parnassos with the objective of recruiting combatants for the First Order. However, Hux's starship succumbed to the defensive fire of Parnassos' automated defense system. Hux, accompanied by his droid DDM-38 and three stormtroopers, namely PT-2445 "Pete," LE-2003 "Elli," and HF-0518 "Huff," successfully made landfall within the lands controlled by the Claw clan via an escape pod. Hux's vessel met its end in the "dead lands," situated a considerable distance away. A separate contingent of four stormtroopers evacuated in a second pod, but communication with Hux's contingent was lost.

Subsequent to their arrival, Hux and his contingent were apprehended by the Claw clan, led by the Dug Balder. Upon returning to the Claw clan's settlement, Hux, utilizing his interpreter droid, conveyed to the Claws that he had been traversing the galaxy in search of warriors. Acknowledging the destitution and squalor prevalent among the locals, Hux extended an offer to any individual willing to assist him and his men in recovering their vessel, promising them a position within the First Order and assuring them of a life of opulence and renown.

Phasma helped Hux to make his way back to his ship in return for a better life offworld

Before the Claws could deliberate on his proposition, a masked female warrior named Phasma declared herself to be the foremost warrior on Parnassos and volunteered to aid Hux in locating his ship. Phasma belonged to the Scyres, a rival clan. Upon Balder's objection to her presence, Phasma fatally stabbed him. Amidst the ensuing conflict between the Claws and Scyres, Phasma persuaded Hux and his troopers to abscond with her back to Scyre territory.

During their journey, Hux imparted knowledge about the First Order to Phasma. Conversely, Hux gleaned from Phasma that Parnassos had endured a calamity that had ravaged the planet and relegated its populace to a primitive existence. Viewing Hux as her means of escape from her ravaged homeworld, Phasma resolved to facilitate Hux's return to his starship.

Upon reaching the Scyre stronghold of Nautilus, Hux and Phasma were met with a frosty reception from Phasma's elder brother Keldo, the leader of the Scyres, who expressed displeasure at his sister's violation of their truce with the Claws. Keldo dismissed Phasma's strategy to assist Hux and his troopers in reaching their ship. He also cast doubt on the First Order's capabilities by highlighting their inability to neutralize the orbital defense system.

Unable to reason with Keldo, Phasma, Hux, his stormtroopers, and four of Phasma's most steadfast warriors, namely Gosta, Torben, Carr, and Siv, departed Nautilus that night. They also appropriated the clan's implements and sustenance.

Following their departure from Nautilus, Siv and her fellow warriors educated Hux about detraxors, contraptions employed to extract nutrients from the deceased and transform them into a paste. Originating from a technologically sophisticated society, Hux voiced revulsion at the notion of harvesting the bodies of the deceased. He informed his Scyre hosts that the First Order procured their provisions through merchants but refrained from elaborating further.

The group ascended a towering mountain and descended onto a sandy expanse blanketed in volcanic ash. During their trek, Carr sustained a bite on the hand from a venomous gold and green beetle. Over the subsequent days, Carr's condition progressively deteriorated until his body disintegrated and imploded, leaving behind only blood, shriveled organs, and translucent bones.

Throughout their expedition, Hux and Phasma's contingent repelled two assaults by raiders mounted on colossal lizards and a pack of skinwolves, mutated canine predators. During the skinwolves' onslaught, Hux suffered a bite on the arm from a skinwolf and subsequently fell ill. As the group established camp, Brendol commended Phasma for her prowess as a warrior and affirmed her suitability for the First Order's training program.

Before Brendol's injuries could worsen, the group was guided by the protocol droid TB-3 to the Con Star Mining Corporation's Terpsichore Station, the company's principal mining installation on Parnassos. Mistaking Hux and his companions for the company's human employees, TB-3 provided them with lodging for the night and arranged for Hux to receive treatment at the station's medbay.

Given that neither Hux's troopers nor Phasma's warriors possessed the funds to cover Hux's medical expenses, the group was compelled to labor as indentured miners under the supervision of malfunctioning Con Star droids. During their respite, Hux and Phasma formulated a strategy to infiltrate the control room and disable the droids. After two working shifts, the group successfully breached the control room and accomplished their objectives. While Siv expressed sympathy for the droids, Hux attributed the droids' erratic conduct to a deficiency in routine programming.

Subsequently, the group departed Terpsichore Station in a Ground assault vehicle (GAV), while Hux's stormtroopers rode speeder bikes. Lacking a clear sense of direction, Phasma convinced Hux to place his trust in her, and they proceeded towards Arratu Station, which housed a verdant and seemingly prosperous settlement. En route, the group's GAV plunged into a ditch filled with spikes, resulting in their capture by armed warriors identifying themselves as the Arratu. Additionally, the stormtrooper Elli sustained a broken neck when her bike crashed into a ditch.

Hux and his traveling companions were subsequently incarcerated in Arratu Station's prison. From the guardian Vrod, Hux and the others discerned that the former mining station had evolved into a city governed by a minuscule wealthy elite and impoverished commoners. The city's ruler, known as the Arratu, orchestrated gladiatorial contests in an arena to entertain the populace. Hux and the others were coerced into participating in these contests.

Prior to exiting their cell, Hux permitted Phasma to divest the comatose Elli of her stormtrooper armor. Lacking the means to administer treatment to their comrade, they abandoned the dying stormtrooper to the starving prisoners. During the inaugural bout, Phasma and Torben succeeded in winning over the Arratu by vanquishing his champion Wranderous and several skin-wolves. As a reward, the Arratu granted the prisoners improved living quarters and sustenance.

On the subsequent day, Phasma, Torben, and Siv managed to eliminate Wranderous. Phasma also killed the Arratu and Vrod, thereby creating a leadership vacuum. Capitalizing on the ensuing chaos, Hux, Phasma, and the others absconded from Arratu in a GAV. Following their escape, Hux privately reproached Phasma for her erroneous decision to travel towards Arratu. However, he also recognized Phasma's potential as a leader and trainer and advised her to submit to authority in order to ascend to the highest echelons.

Continuing their journey, Hux and the group encountered the Gand Churkk, who was entirely enveloped in Parnassos vehicles. From Chukk, they ascertained that Hux's ship had crashed in the radioactive "dead lands." Shortly thereafter, Phasma's brother Keldo and several Scyre and Claw warriors intercepted the group.

A fierce engagement ensued, resulting in heavy casualties on both sides. Hux lost his two remaining stormtroopers, Pete and Huff, while Torben and Gosta also perished in the conflict. Phasma killed her estranged brother following a verbal altercation. Despite the losses, Hux and the others managed to reach Hux's crashed ship. There, Hux successfully contacted the First Order for assistance.

Hux's son Armitage promptly arrived aboard a Star Destroyer and an Atmospheric Assault Lander. Phasma accompanied Hux into the First Order and brought Frey, a five-year-old girl who was the sole Scyre child. Phasma believed that Frey would make a promising soldier. However, Phasma prevented Siv from joining them because she had disobeyed her orders to kill Wranderous. Phasma abandoned Siv to perish in the "dead lands," but she and her unborn child found refuge at Calliope Station.

A new protege

Phasma, Hux's new protégé and bodyguard, who later murdered her benefactor

As they departed into space, Hux employed his shuttle's laser cannons to bombard both Arratu Station and the Scyre territory from orbit as a demonstration of the First Order's power. Phasma tearfully witnessed the orbital bombardment but accepted her new position within the First Order. Upon returning to the Absolution, Phasma and Frey were inducted into the First Order. While Frey was entrusted to the care of Cardinal, Hux placed Phasma in charge of the older stormtrooper cadets.

Shortly after their return, Hux summoned Cardinal for an impromptu meeting. During the meeting, he introduced Cardinal to Phasma and divided the stormtrooper training program between Cardinal and Phasma. Phasma was assigned the task of training the teenagers and adults, while Cardinal would continue to train the new and younger recruits. Impressed by her combat skills, Hux also appointed Phasma as his personal bodyguard. Cardinal developed a deep-seated resentment towards Phasma as an outsider who had supplanted his position as Hux's protégé and personal bodyguard.

Betrayal and death

Despite Hux having elevated Phasma to a position of considerable power and respect within the First Order, Phasma never harbored genuine loyalty towards him or the First Order. At some point following Phasma's recruitment and Brendol's return from his shipwreck on Parnassos, Phasma and Armitage convened and conspired to assassinate Brendol. Both concurred that the time had come for Brendol to meet his demise, and Hux entrusted the actual execution to Phasma, stipulating only that she ensure it was untraceable.

Phasma proceeded to eliminate Brendol using the toxin derived from the bite of a Parnassos beetle, which she had acquired during a return voyage to Parnassos for the purpose of forging her chromium armor. Brendol manifested symptoms analogous to those experienced by Carr, including bloating, bulging eyes, hair and fingernail loss, and translucent skin. As a precautionary measure, Phasma also arranged for Frey to be killed during a training accident, as her fellow Scyre was among the few individuals who would have been aware of the dangerous beetle.

Prior to his demise, Cardinal advised Hux to seek a medical examination at the medbay. The ailing Hux rebuffed Cardinal, instructing him to mind his own affairs and respect his superiors. Nevertheless, Hux visited the medbay, but his ailment proved unfamiliar to the medical droids, who classified it as an unknown malady. With the First Order's medical droids unable to treat Hux's sickness, Hux dissolved in a bacta tank, leaving behind only a few shrunken organs, bare bones, and a patch of graying red hair.

Legacy

Phasma's dark secret

The Resistance spy Vi Moradi revealed the truth about Hux's murder to Cardinal

Brendol Hux's death remained a closely guarded secret within the First Order. Hux's son Armitage informed Cardinal and an assembly of ten thousand troops that the elder Hux had passed away. Officially, the First Order asserted that Hux had embarked on a clandestine mission to undisclosed locations. The Resistance, a New Republic–affiliated paramilitary organization, uncovered the truth regarding Hux's death when their slicers obtained an antiquated First Order medical droid and successfully deciphered its data.

Furthermore, Cardinal was regarded as one of Brendol's most exceptional recruits and confidants, an individual who was spoken of highly by Supreme Leader Snoke himself. As the years elapsed, Cardinal's resentment towards Phasma's role in the First Order stormtrooper training program intensified, perceiving her as ruthless and unprincipled. He sought an opportunity to undermine Phasma while maintaining his allegiance to the First Order.

An opportunity presented itself when Cardinal apprehended the Resistance operative and spy Vi Moradi. In exchange for sustenance and hydration, Vi disclosed that Phasma had murdered Hux in order to conceal her past. Cardinal endeavored to inform Armitage about his father's murder only to discover that Armitage had conspired with Phasma. Armed with one of Phasma's daggers and a Parnassos beetle, Cardinal attempted to exact vengeance upon Phasma. However, his attempt to kill Phasma failed, and a grievously wounded Cardinal was rescued by Vi, who spirited him away from the Absolution.

Reconquering the galaxy

Armitage Hux adopted his father's practices and ruthlessly trained the stormtroopers of the First Order.

Eventually, the First Order emerged from the remnants of the vanquished Empire. Armitage Hux, having been raised on his father's narratives of how the Empire had rescued the galaxy from the turmoil of the Clone Wars, emulated his father's path and rose to become a general within its ranks. Armitage adopted his father's methodologies to ruthlessly train a new generation of specially-bred stormtroopers to facilitate the destruction of the Republic and reinstate what he perceived as order to a chaotic galaxy.

General Hux, the commander of the superweapon known as Starkiller Base, inflicted a devastating blow upon the New Republic by obliterating its capital of Hosnian Prime, but the base was subsequently destroyed by the Resistance that had been established to combat the First Order. Nevertheless, General Hux and the First Order persisted in their struggle.

By 34 ABY, certain First Order officers speculated that Brendol would likely have been a more desirable candidate to assume control of Palpatine's Empire before Snoke ascended to the position of Supreme Leader of the First Order. In 35 ABY, Armitage met his end when he was fatally shot by First Order Allegiant General Enric Pryde after serving as a spy for the Resistance.

Personality and traits

Brendol Hux was a ruthless and loyal Imperial.

Brendol Hux possessed pale-white skin and graying red hair. He was a committed yet ruthless Imperial military officer who aspired to cultivate deeply loyal stormtroopers who excelled in combat. While he admired the combat proficiency and dedication of the Old Republic's clone troopers and Jedi Order, he deemed the Empire's stormtroopers to be comparatively inferior to their historical predecessors. Consequently, Hux conceived the notion of raising worthy stormtroopers from birth. While his concepts were rejected by contemporary Imperial officers during the reign of Emperor Palpatine, his ideas were readily embraced by the First Order and profoundly influenced the military junta's stormtrooper training regimen.

Furthermore, Hux was a staunch proponent of natural selection and advocated for the elimination of "undesirable" individuals, whether cadets or nerfs, in order to foster a robust population. Hux's adherence to natural selection led him to orchestrate the deaths of several "underperforming" cadets, including Xan Lanier. Hux's endeavors to cultivate a strong herd of nerfs prompted him to reject protective measures in favor of employing punishment and the threat of death to compel the animals into compliance.

By 5 ABY, Hux had gained weight, and his jaw was adorned with stubble. Grand Admiral Sloane characterized him as a "big, blustering, ego-fed pig" and disapproved of his propensity to interject during conversations. Hux was mortified when Sloane broached the subject of his illegitimate son, Armitage Hux. Hux took pride in his cadets and was vexed when Sloane suggested that even they were insufficient to salvage the Empire from defeat. While Hux regarded his son as a weak-willed boy, he believed that the boy still possessed potential. While skeptical of Fleet Admiral Rax's plans, he was appeased when Rax disclosed that he commanded several Imperial fleets dispersed throughout the Galaxy.

The harsh desert conditions of Jakku exacted a toll on Hux. His hair became disheveled, and he developed a paunch. Brendol devoted minimal time to his son, Armitage, and subjected the boy to both physical and psychological mistreatment. Brendol utilized his skills as a commandant to train local orphans into Rax's praetorian guard of assassins and child soldiers. Brendol came to place his faith in Gallius Rax's vision of a resurgent Empire and acquiesced to the Contingency plan. Hux maintained a strained relationship with Sloane, who disapproved of his harsh treatment of Armitage. Hux was no match for the seasoned Sloane in unarmed combat and became her subordinate ally. The elder Hux also exhibited signs of sycophancy after being subdued by Sloane.

Around 9 ABY, Hux had shed some weight and shaved his stubble, as depicted via hologram during a meeting with Moff Gideon and the rest of the Shadow Council. By his sixties, Hux possessed pale-white skin, graying red hair, slender limbs, and a prominent belly. He was known to favor classical, traditional styles, elegant rugs, fine artifacts, and rich foods. Despite his advanced age, Hux remained a formidable leader who commanded the respect and loyalty of his stormtroopers. Hux perceived potential in Phasma as a warrior and leader and believed that she would prove to be an invaluable asset to the First Order. However, he failed to recognize that Phasma was solely concerned with her own interests, an oversight that ultimately cost him his life.

Relationships

Armitage Hux

Brendol Hux had a difficult relationship with Armitage, his illegitimate son.

As a patriotic Imperial, Brendol Hux instilled in his son, Armitage Hux, tales of heroic Imperials and how the Empire had rescued the galaxy from chaos following the Clone Wars. The younger Hux also embraced the elder Hux's conviction that the New Republic was too feeble to safeguard the galaxy from chaos and that the First Order was essential to saving the galaxy from itself.

Hux maintained a poor relationship with his son and exhibited minimal love and affection towards him. The younger Hux harbored such profound fear of his father that he sought refuge in Grand Admiral Sloane as his protector. Under pressure from Sloane, Brendol imparted to his son all that he knew about war and the Empire. Despite this, their relationship remained strained, and Armitage harbored animosity towards his father, even conspiring with Phasma to kill him and seize his position in the First Order.

Cardinal

One of his recruits from Jakku, Cardinal, observed that Hux tended to regard him with a more intimate and familial gaze than he did his own son. Cardinal swiftly embraced Hux's indoctrination and internalized the lessons imparted to him regarding unwavering loyalty to the First Order. Hux held Cardinal in such high esteem that he furnished him with his own distinctive crimson set of armor. Cardinal was also entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing the First Order's stormtrooper training program, a role that was subsequently shared with Phasma.

Phasma

Brendol Hux was impressed by the martial prowess and leadership capabilities of Phasma, a Scyre warrior. He appreciated Phasma's willingness to risk violating a truce with the rival Claws and betraying her own brother, Keldo, and tribe to assist Hux in reaching his starship in order to summon assistance. While Hux disapproved of her arrogance and strong will, he believed that she could be molded into a warrior and leader worthy of the First Order. Phasma's combat skills led Hux to appoint her to manage the training of the First Order's older cadets. Hux's faith in Phasma was ultimately misplaced when she conspired with Armitage to kill him in order to eliminate the last person who knew her past and secrets.

Equipment

During his tenure in the Shadow Council, Brendol Hux donned an Imperial military uniform, which encompassed an Imperial kepi and an officer's disk, as well as a long coat worn over his uniform. He also bore a Rank insignia plaque, designating him as a General. As a First Order General, Brendol Hux sported a finely woven black uniform and tall, polished boots.

Behind the scenes

Brendol Hux made his initial appearance as a minor antagonist in Jason Fry's 2015 junior novella The Secret Academy, the concluding installment in the Servants of the Empire series. He was subsequently identified as the father of General Hux, a secondary antagonist from Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens and the mastermind behind the First Order's stormtrooper training regimen. Hux was briefly mentioned in Claudia Gray's 2016 novel Bloodline. He later appeared as a supporting character in Chuck Wendig's 2016 novel Aftermath: Life Debt, the second book in Star Wars: The Aftermath Trilogy. He was also one of the main characters of the Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi novel Phasma.

The character was conceived by Jason Fry, who, upon being provided with story material for The Force Awakens to review for the reference title Star Wars: The Force Awakens: Incredible Cross-Sections, observed that the character of Hux was remarkably young. He recognized an opportunity to introduce the character's origins and generate excitement for the film while showcasing the Commandant's Cadets as a genuine threat for new readers following the film's release. He dismissed another concept of linking the characters of Anya Razar from the same novel and Captain Phasma from The Force Awakens by suggesting they were one and the same, but he did propose the idea of the droid DDM-38 pushing a red-haired baby in a pram. While this was rejected, he nevertheless appreciated seeing fan art depicting the young Armitage Hux in the arms of a creepy nanny droid.

He made his first live-action appearance in the third season's seventh episode of The Mandalorian entitled "The Spies," where he was portrayed by Brian Gleeson, the real-life brother of actor Domhnall Gleeson, who played the character's son Armitage Hux in the sequel trilogy.
