Respawn Entertainment crafted the canon single-player video game, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Electronic Arts published it on November 15, 2019. The narrative centers on Cal Kestis, a Jedi Padawan who survived the events of Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, taking place five years later. Presumed dead by the Galactic Empire, Cal lives in secrecy for a considerable time. Ultimately, he is found and pursued by the Inquisitorius, leading him to join a crew with the goal of retrieving a Jedi holocron.
A new action adventure experience comes from Respawn Entertainment, presenting an original Star Wars tale. It follows Cal Kestis, a Padawan survivor of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. Engage, and evolve into a Jedi.
In the year 14 BBY, which is five years following the conclusion of the Clone Wars, Cal Kestis, previously a Jedi Padawan, is employed at a junkyard on the planet Bracca, where he disassembles Clone Wars-era starships. During an incident, he is compelled to utilize his Force powers to rescue his companion, Prauf. Unbeknownst to them, an Imperial probe droid in the vicinity records the event and transmits it to the Galactic Empire, thus exposing Cal's true identity to the Imperials. The Empire sends two Inquisitors trained by Darth Vader, the Second Sister and the Ninth Sister, to find and capture Kestis. While being chased by the Second Sister, who murders Prauf, Cal is saved by Cere Junda and Greez Dritus, and escapes Bracca aboard Greez's ship, the Mantis. Cere reveals that she is a former Jedi and was acquainted with Cal's Jedi Master, Jaro Tapal.
Cere brings Cal to the planet Bogano, the location of an ancient vault, hoping Cal is able to access it. En route to the Vault, Cal befriends a little droid called BD-1, who displays a message to him from Cere's former Master, Eno Cordova. Cordova's message reveals that the Vault was constructed by an ancient civilization known as the Zeffo, and that he concealed a Jedi holocron containing a list of the locations of Force-sensitive children within. Cere believes this list could be the foundation for a rebuilt Jedi Order capable of overthrowing the Empire. However, the only way to access it is to follow Cordova's path and pass his trials.
Cal's only clues are the location of the Zeffo homeworld, and a tomb on the planet Dathomir. On Zeffo, they discover a clue indicating that the Zeffo had contact with Kashyyyk, implying that Cordova's contact there, the Wookiee chieftain Tarfful, might possess information about them.
Cal partners with Saw Gerrera and his Partisans on Kashyyyk to combat the Imperial occupation forces who are enslaving the native Wookiees. Unable to locate Tarfful, Cal goes back to Zeffo to investigate a tomb, where he encounters the Second Sister again. The Second Sister discloses that she was Cere's Padawan, Trilla Suduri, who was captured by the Empire after Cere revealed her location under torture. She cautions Cal that Cere will inevitably betray him before leaving. Cal learns he must locate a device called a Zeffo Astrium to unlock the Vault before being knocked unconscious and captured by a bounty hunter.
Cal awakens to find himself compelled to participate in a gladiatorial arena at the command of crime lord Sorc Tormo, who leads the Haxion Brood. Cere and Greez rescue him, and Greez apologizes because the Brood kidnapped Cal in the first place due to Greez's gambling debts. They then receive a message indicating that Tarfful is willing to communicate with Cal, so they return to Kashyyyk. Tarfful directs Cal to seek answers at the summit of Kashyyyk's Origin Tree. There, he discovers another recording from Cordova informing him that an Astrium can be found on Dathomir, but he is then attacked by the Ninth Sister. Cal defeats the Inquisitor and proceeds to Dathomir.
Upon arrival, Cal's advancement is immediately hindered by the Nightsister Merrin, who holds the Jedi responsible for the massacre of her people during the Clone Wars, and does everything she can to keep him away. After experiencing a flashback where he remembers Jaro sacrificing himself to protect him from the clone troopers during the execution of Order 66, Cal is attacked by Jaro's spirit, resulting in his lightsaber's kyber crystal being destroyed, rendering it inoperable.
Cal then meets another former Jedi, Taron Malicos, who sought to learn the power of the Nightsisters and manipulated both Merrin and the Nightbrothers to believe the Jedi responsible for the massacre of the Nightsisters. Malicos offers to teach Cal how to harness the dark power of Dathomir against Merrin's wishes. Cal refuses and flees Dathomir when Merrin attacks both of them, having realized Malicos had deceived her. Cere confesses that when she learned Trilla became an Inquisitor, she briefly succumbed to the dark side, which is why she had severed her connection to the Force.
The crew travels to Ilum to find an intact kyber crystal so Cal can build a new lightsaber. Returning to Dathomir, Cal faces Jaro's spirit again, defeating him by overcoming his feelings of guilt over his master's death. Malicos again attempts to sway Cal to the dark side, and he attacks when Cal refuses. Merrin helps Cal defeat Malicos, and he is able to convince her to join the Mantis crew.
The crew returns to Bogano, and Cal uses the Astrium to unlock the Vault and reveal the holocron. Trilla manages to steal the holocron and escape as Cal is overwhelmed by a vision of the process of her becoming an Inquisitor. Cere reassumes her position as a Jedi Master and grants Cal the rank of Jedi Knight. They proceed to infiltrate the Inquisitorius headquarters on Nur, where Cal is able to defeat Trilla and recover the holocron.
Cere attempts to make amends with Trilla, but Darth Vader intervenes and kills Trilla for her failure. Cal and Cere barely evade Vader and escape the fortress by breaking an underwater window and swimming out. Cere falls unconscious from using all of her power to delay Vader, and Cal attempts to drag her to the surface of the water, but he fails in doing so and is doomed to drown. Luckily, Merrin intervenes and saves them from drowning. With the holocron now in their possession, the crew wonders what they should do with it. Realizing that gathering the Force-sensitive children would only make it easier for the Empire to target them, Cal destroys the holocron, deciding that their fates should be left up to the Force before asking the crew where they should go next.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order presents itself as a third-person action-adventure video game featuring a single-player story experience. Stig Asmussen, the game director known for directing God of War III, has characterized the game as incorporating "thoughtful combat, agile exploration, and Metroidvania level design."
The game offers four difficulty settings: Story Mode, Jedi Knight, Jedi Master, and Jedi Grand Master. The difficulty level affects aspects such as the timing for parrying, the amount of damage received, and the aggressiveness of enemies.
According to Asmussen, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was initially conceived as a game unrelated to Star Wars, but it was adapted into the series after various individuals at Electronic Arts (EA) viewed footage from its early development stages. When his team initially met with [Lucasfilm](/article/lucasfilm_ltd.], the company expressed a lack of interest in a game centered around the Jedi; consequently, the developers had to craft a narrative that would justify the inclusion of Jedi. The game was initially announced on May 4, 2016, and its title was revealed during the E3 press conference on June 9, 2018. An exclusive preview of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was first shown on April 13, 2019 during Celebration Chicago. Early motion capture work showcased a duel between a Jedi and an adversary wielding a red lightsaber.
Merchandise for the game was launched as part of Triple Force Friday, which took place on October 4, 2019. The game itself was released on November 15, 2019. Pre-ordering the game granted access to an orange hue for Cal's lightsaber blade, a distinctive skin for BD-1, components for a Mygeeto Campaign lightsaber hilt, and parts for an Umbaran Campaign lightsaber hilt. These cosmetic items were later made available to all players. Fortnite Battle Royale introduced a stormtrooper skin that was provided at no cost with the game's purchase from the Epic Games store.
A book titled The Art of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was released on November 19, 2019 by Dark Horse Comics.
Stephen Barton and Gordy Haab were responsible for composing the musical score for Jedi: Fallen Order. Additionally, portions of music from the Star Wars saga, originally composed by John Williams, were integrated into the game. An original soundtrack was made available digitally on August 21, 2020.
A comic book miniseries titled Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order - Dark Temple made its debut in September 2019, serving as a prequel to the game. A sequel video game, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, was released in 2023, with a novel, Jedi: Battle Scars, bridging the two games.
According to Matt Martin from the Lucasfilm Story Group, certain allusions to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order were present in the 2017 comic book series Star Wars: Darth Vader (2017). These connections encompass the Ninth Sister, the Purge Troopers, and the Second Sister, who initially appeared in the series' sixth, thirteenth, and nineteenth issues, respectively.
In both Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and the comic book Jedi Fallen Order - Dark Temple 1, the Second Sister pilots a TIE/IN interceptor. This seemingly retcons information from the reference book TIE Fighter Owners' Workshop Manual, which states that TIE interceptors were not produced until 3 BBY. Though Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes later established that the Second Sister's interceptor was in fact the TIE/IN Interceptor Prototype. However, another TIE/IN interceptor can be seen during a cutscene when the player first arrives on Kashyyyk. It is unclear if this is the prototype model or the regular model. The Galaxy of Heroes website provides a partial reckoning of both sources, noting that 3 BBY was the interceptor's "official" first deployment, opening the door for prior, "unofficial" uses, including prototype tests.
During an EA earnings conference call for the period concluding on March 31, 2020, the company's CEO, Andrew Wilson, addressed the success of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, referring to the game as the inaugural title in a new franchise.
