Yendor Brethen

Yendor Brethen was a Rutian Twi'lek male pilot. Serving the Alliance to Restore the Republic and subsequently the New Republic, he was a valued member of Corona Squadron. His rank was private. Later in life, he transitioned to diplomacy, serving the New Republic as an emissary representing his homeworld of Ryloth in the senate. He alerted the Senate to the threat posed by the Nikto crime lord Rinnrivin Di's cartel, which was jeopardizing Ryloth's international commerce. Following this warning, Senators Leia Organa and Ransolm Casterfo journeyed to Bastatha to investigate, confirming the validity of Yendor's concerns. Subsequently, Yendor played host to Leia and her team during their visit to the Ryloth archives in search of information regarding Rinnrivin and his criminal organization.

After retiring from politics, Yendor embraced academia and started a family, becoming the father of Charth and Hahnee Brethen. Eventually, he became a grandfather with Charth having two children. The newly established Ryloth Defense Authority reassigned him to a remote outpost far from Lessu, Ryloth's principal city. When Leia and the Resistance arrived on Ryloth, Yendor offered them sanctuary, assisting their operations with the help of his two children. When the First Order initiated an assault on the base, Yendor facilitated their escape, guiding them off-world.

Biography

Galactic Civil War

Having joined the Rebel Alliance, Yendor Brethen was stationed at Echo Base on the icy planet of Hoth. Just five days after his arrival at Echo Base, Yendor encountered the protocol droid C-3PO while he was recalibrating the base's thermal regulators. He also undertook the unpleasant and malodorous task of cleaning the tauntaun stables at the base. During the Battle of Hoth, he served as a gunner for former TIE fighter pilot and Imperial defector Thane Kyrell aboard a snowspeeder. Following Luke Skywalker's lead, the Rebel pilots utilized their harpoon weaponry to bring down multiple Imperial AT-AT walkers. Yendor and Thane were among those rebels who managed to evade the Imperial onslaught and escape the planet.

Serving as a member of Corona Squadron, Yendor operated under the callsign "Corona Two," piloting a T-65B X-wing starfighter in various skirmishes against Imperial TIE fighter squadrons. After Thane revealed that he had a romantic connection with Ciena Ree, an active Imperial Navy Lieutenant Commander, on Jelucan, Yendor joined his fellow squadron members in expressing their disapproval. When Yendor posited that the "Imperial woman" would have killed them, Kyrell defended his actions, asserting that none of his wingmen had been put in harm's way.

Yendor flew as Corona Two during the Battle of Endor.

Yendor and the other pilots later engaged in a dogfight within the Hudalla system, narrowly avoiding an Imperial ambush thanks to Ciena Ree's discreet intervention. Yendor observed Ree subtly distract another of the TIE fighters, enabling Thane's escape. This prompted Yendor to apologize to Thane for his earlier criticisms about Ciena. Yendor later took part in the Battle of Endor, a pivotal victory for the Rebellion that resulted in the demise of Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader. Yendor continued his service after the Rebel Alliance transformed into the New Republic. Following the Contessa's departure from Corona Squadron to campaign for the presidency of her homeworld, Yendor assumed the role of Corona Leader, defending the Mid Rim planet of Naboo from invading Imperial forces.

After repelling a third Imperial assault on Naboo, Yendor extended an invitation to his fellow pilots to visit the Gungan city of Otoh Gunga to sample a local dessert so large it took four hominids to eat and was known to induce a sugar coma in those who consumed it. However, Thane declined due to his continued grief over Ciena, who he believed had died during the Battle of Endor. Throughout the Galactic Civil War, Yendor spoke with Princess Leia Organa at least a dozen times, and the two became familiar with each other.

Return to Ryloth

In the year 5 ABY, Yendor fought alongside a rebel faction against Imperial remnants on Ryloth. His group was among the first to discover that the Empire had abandoned its garrisons on the planet, and that Ryloth had regained its autonomy. Yendor was subsequently chosen to serve as Ryloth's ambassador to the newly forming New Republic. After the New Republic moved its capital to Nakadia, Yendor was seen by former Imperial loyalty officer Sinjir Rath Velus conversing with Senator Nim Tar.

Representing Ryloth

Following the conclusion of the Galactic Civil War, Yendor continued to serve as Ryloth's emissary for the next twenty-four years. While Ryloth did not formally join the New Republic, it still maintained trade relations with the new galactic government. Approximately six years before the destruction of the Hosnian system, Ryloth's external trade and economy faced a threat from smuggling operations conducted by the Kajain'sa'Nikto crime lord Rinnrivin Di's cartel. In response, his government dispatched Yendor to the Galactic Senate on Hosnian Prime to request assistance from the Republic.

During a Senate hearing, Yendor emphasized that the New Republic had pledged to prevent organized crime from regaining the power it held during the Age of the Empire. Despite the Republic's promises of financial regulations and comprehensive patrols of shipping lanes, these measures were inconsistently enforced, and no patrols had been sent to Ryloth for two decades. Yendor's report was met with indifference by several Centrist and Populist senators, who questioned the accuracy of his information and argued that the Senate lacked jurisdiction because the matter was intrasystem.

However, Populist Senator Organa and her Centrist colleague Ransolm Casterfo agreed to investigate Rinnrivin's cartel on behalf of the Galactic Senate. Their mission led them to Bastatha, where they discovered that Rinnrivin maintained a base on the subterranean world. As their investigation progressed, Organa's pilots Joph Seastriker and Greer Sonnel uncovered connections between Rinnrivin's cartel and a paramilitary organization known as the Amaxine warriors.

Yendor later welcomed Leia when she and her party, including C-3PO, visited Ryloth to examine the planet's archives for data concerning Rinnrivin. Upon Leia's arrival, the two former comrades reminisced about their time at Echo Base and in Corona Squadron. Yendor also greeted C-3PO, whom he recognized from his time at Echo Base. After meeting Joph and Greer, Yendor escorted his guests to the archives, which consisted of paper scrolls and documents. There, the New Republic officials learned that Rinnrivin had been a minor spice dealer who had inexplicably risen to lead a major crime syndicate within the past seven to ten years. Later, Leia and Casterfo discovered that a mysterious entity was using Rinnrivin's cartel and the Amaxine warriors as proxies to destabilize the New Republic.

First Order–Resistance war

Meeting an old friend

By 34 ABY, following the establishment of the Ryloth Defense Authority, Yendor and his people were relocated from Ryloth's capital city, Lessu, to a remote desert base as a precautionary measure against potential attacks on the capital. He established a family, becoming the father of Charth and [Hahnee Brethen](/article/hahnee_brethen], with Charth eventually fathering two children. He transitioned from his role as an emissary to become a scholar, aiming to preserve Ryloth's history within his library.

Days after the Resistance suffered a devastating defeat against the First Order at the Battle of Crait, his old friend Leia, accompanied by his children, visited him. The two exchanged greetings and discussed their activities since their last encounter, before discussing the Resistance and the support they needed. Yendor explained that Ryloth could not compromise its neutrality in the ongoing conflict, but Leia clarified that they only required a safe haven for a short duration, as their only available vessel was the Millennium Falcon. She then informed him of Luke's death and the significant reduction in the Resistance's numbers, confirming the rumors he had heard. Realizing that the Jedi were extinct, Yendor was reassured by Leia that their future was secure, while looking at Rey, who introduced herself to the Twi'lek. Yendor praised the girl's skills, reminiscing about his days as a pilot in the Rebellion.

Leia continued negotiating with Yendor, but was interrupted by Charth, who pointed out that they lacked the facilities to accommodate hundreds of fighters, but was informed that they only needed to house the Falcon. After some consideration, Yendor decided to discuss the matter with the government in the capital, but stated that Chancellor Drelomon and General Ishel would oppose them, and warned Leia of the consequences if the First Order discovered them. Charth voiced his concerns, asserting that housing the Resistance as refugees would not be enough to convince the First Order, but Yendor maintained his position, stating that his days as a freedom fighter were not over. He offered Leia a luxurious room within the RDA's headquarters, but she declined and instead stayed in the Falcon.

Preparations

When the First Order entered Lessu, Yendor dispatched his daughter to determine the reason for their sudden appearance, discovering that they were on a diplomatic mission. After hearing back from Hahnee, he immediately informed Leia of the urgent situation that had arisen during her stay. He entered the Falcon with her permission and informed her of the First Order's presence, explaining that the Resistance had less than five days before the Chancellor made a decision. The Twi'lek assured her that he would do everything in his power to buy them enough time. He also revealed that the following day would be the Twi'lek holiday, the Longest Night, which would provide an opportunity to bring in the additional Resistance ships with ease.

After the remaining Resistance forces had arrived, Yendor's library was transformed into a war room. As they planned a series of operations on various worlds, he thanked everyone in the room for their bravery in standing against the First Order, remembering how Ryloth had once stood against tyranny during the Clone Wars. When Maz Kanata contacted them and provided a partial list of prisoners, one name stood out to Yendor and Leia, an individual with the initials "R. C." They speculated that the individual could be their old ally Ransolm Casterfo, who was imprisoned on Corellia. With the teams embarking on their respective missions, he stayed behind with Leia, monitoring their operations while his son Charth traveled to Corellia with Poe Dameron, Suralinda Javos, and Finn. After they had left, the two discussed how royalty always felt imposing on their peace. Leia commented that her presence had the same effect. The conversation was interrupted when he pointed out that Rey had been waiting to speak with her. Tensions suddenly rose when the proximity alarm was activated, with Yendor alerting everyone to the First Order's presence, who had discovered the Resistance and began attacking the base.

Escaping Ryloth

During the attack, Hahnee lost her life while warning everyone that the government had revealed the Resistance's location. Yendor defended the southern end of the base's hangar with a number of RDA fighters, covering Leia and her team's escape to their respective vessels. After everyone had successfully boarded their ships, Yendor contacted her through a comlink while ordering two men to head to the surface-to-air cannon and fend off the First Order. Leia, with a heavy heart, informed the Twi'lek of her daughter's death. After a brief period of silence, Yendor acknowledged the fact. Leia stated that she died valiantly, to which Yendor replied stating that valiant deaths did not exist, only death in its purest form. After she confirmed his grandchildren's safety, he ordered her to reunite them with their father. Leia later contacted Yendor again offering him to fly an X-wing and replace a Phantom Squadron pilot that died in the attack. He agreed and headed towards her position, terminating their communication. After everyone was accounted for, Yendor and the other X-wing pilots led the Resistance ships off the planet. Following their escape from Ryloth, Yendor and Orrimaarko prepared assignments for prisoners who were rescued from Corellia.

Personality and traits

Yendor in the cockpit

Yendor's primary identity was that of a pilot, feeling more at ease in that capacity than as a soldier or any type of commanding officer. Nonetheless, he held a strong conviction in the Rebellion's principles, and was prepared to undertake whatever actions were necessary to aid in the defeat of the Empire. Being a committed rebel pilot, Yendor harbored animosity towards the Galactic Empire and initially struggled to comprehend his squadron mate Thane Kyrell's affection for Imperial officer Ciena Ree, although he revised his perspective after witnessing Ree's deliberate distraction of a fellow pilot to facilitate Thane's escape. Yendor considered his fellow Corona Squadron pilots, including Thane, as friends and once invited them to sample a Gungan dessert following the Naboo Sieges.

Yendor initially hesitated to serve as an ambassador, but eventually adapted to the role, vehemently defending Ryloth's interests in the Galactic Senate. As Ryloth's emissary, Yendor was invested in promoting his planet's autonomy and economic prosperity. He perceived Rinnrivin Di's cartel as a threat to Ryloth's independence and well-being. Despite the passage of time, Yendor possessed a sharp memory and could recall encounters with fellow rebel veterans such as Senator Organa and C-3PO during the Galactic Civil War.

Upon reuniting with his old friend Leia, Yendor was initially hesitant to offer refuge to the Resistance. She reminded him of his past as a rebel, but he responded that while he remained a rebel at heart, he had a responsibility to safeguard his people, including his family. After she convinced him that they only needed temporary shelter, he became sympathetic to their cause and dedicated his time and effort to assisting them during their stay on the planet, participating in planning future operations. Yendor firmly believed that death existed in its simplest form without valiance, even after hearing the news of his daughter's death. Despite his old age, he did not hesitate to pilot an X-wing again when offered the chance by Leia.

Skills and abilities

Yendor was a skilled pilot and gunner, and a competent leader, despite his reservations. He also grew into an effective diplomat as a member of the New Republic senate, convincing at least Princess Leia of the threat posed by Rinnrivin Di. After becoming a scholar, Yendor dedicated the remainder of his life to preserving Rylothian history. Decades after the Galactic Civil War had ended, he was still able to pilot an X-wing, leading Resistance ships as they escaped Ryloth.

Behind the scenes

Yendor first appeared in Lost Stars, a young adult novel written by Claudia Gray as part of Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens and was first pictured in the novel's webcomic adaptation.
