Jek

During the Clone Wars, a clone shock trooper known as Jek fought for the Grand Army of the Republic. He fought beside Jedi Master Yoda on Rugosa in 22 BBY as part of a small squad. Later, in 19 BBY, he again served under Yoda during the Battle of Kashyyyk. Jek held the rank of Clone Captain within the Ranger Corps at Kashyyyk, and he was present when Order 66 was given. Despite his previous alliance with Yoda, Jek, along with Commander Gree, attempted to carry out the order. However, Yoda, sensing a disturbance in the Force, swiftly killed both clones before they could succeed.

Biography

Early life

Jek traveled to Rugosa with Master Yoda, Lieutenant Thire, and Rys on a diplomatic mission.

Jek, a clone created for the Clone Wars that spanned the galaxy, was grown on the planet Kamino using the DNA of Jango Fett. Fett, a bounty hunter, served as the template for the clone trooper army. Jek received combat training and served as a clone shock trooper within the Republic's Coruscant Guard diplomatic service during the conflict between the Galactic Republic and the Separatist Alliance.

Ambush on Rugosa

Surprised in space

In 22 BBY, around the time of the Battle of Ryloth, Jek was among three members of the Guard who accompanied Jedi Grand Master and Jedi General Yoda on a mission to the coral moon Rugosa. Their objective was to meet with King Katuunko of Toydaria to establish a Republic supply base following Toydaria's secret support of a Republic supply mission to Ryloth during the intense campaign there. Clone Lieutenant Thire and Rys were Jek's fellow clones in the squad.

The Republic delegation arrived above the moon on a Consular-class cruiser, commanded by Clone Captain Zak, planning to secretly meet the Toydarian king atop a Rugosan King coral. Upon arrival, Jek and the others on the cruiser's bridge discovered their communications were being jammed. Soon, two Separatist Munificent-class star frigates emerged from hyperspace and attacked. Captain Zak, realizing the Republic cruiser was outmatched, declared the need to bring the envoy to safety. However, Yoda countermanded this, ordering the ship to retreat while he and his escort continued the mission on the moon. Jek and the others boarded Republic escape pods as Zak launched them per Yoda's instructions. While Rys piloted the [escape pod](/article/escape_pod], Jek sat behind Yoda as the frigates targeted the pods. After Rys and Lieutenant Thire confirmed they were out of range, Yoda agreed but sensed another trap. Jek looked at Thire, confused, then asked Yoda if he was certain. Yoda replied he felt a disturbance in the Force, and the pod crash-landed on Rugosa.

Sith assassin and Separatist commander Asajj Ventress had already surprised King Katuunko, trying to persuade him to join the Separatists. After the pod landed, Thire contacted the king for Yoda to speak, while Jek and Rys gathered their weapons. They learned Ventress had offered an alliance with the Separatists, directly from Count Dooku, the Separatist Head of State. Jek and Rys exchanged glances upon hearing this. The three parties agreed that if Yoda and his escorts could evade Ventress's forces and reach Katuunko on the coral, Toydaria would join the Republic; otherwise, Ventress requested the Toydarians consider a Separatist alliance. Following the agreement, Rys spotted a C-9979 landing craft carrying Ventress's forces, believing there might be a full droid battalion with armored forces. Jek grabbed his rotary blaster cannon, remarking they'd have something for them. Yoda instructed the clones to carry only essentials to maintain speed, leading them on a detour to avoid Separatist forces, despite Thire's initial objection.

After some time, Yoda and his clones were spotted in what the battle droid forces designated Sector 11, and were attacked by Armored Assault Tank Mk Is. Despite Thire, Jek, and Rys being anxious and ready for battle, Yoda assured them they were out of range and to relax. The tanks were unable to advance further, one becoming stuck on a coral. Thire confirmed the situation, and Yoda stated that size wasn't everything, emphasizing that while they were fewer in number, they were greater in mind. After Yoda left, Jek expressed confusion to his comrades about the general's comments. Jek and the clones engaged droid infantry forces and became separated from the Jedi. They eventually regrouped, eliminating the remaining Separatist forces before meeting Katuunko.

Later service

Following the Rugosa mission, Jek heeded Master Yoda's counsel and re-trained as a clone scout trooper. Eventually, he achieved the military rank of Clone Captain and joined the Ranger Corps by the time of the Outer Rim Sieges. During these sieges, after the Battle of Coruscant in 19 BBY, the Separatist Alliance invaded [Kashyyyk](/article/kashyyyk], the Wookiee world in the Mid Rim, due to its strategic location near the Foundry of the Confederacy, where the Republic's 12th Sector Army had initiated several battles.

Yoda volunteered to help defend Kashyyyk, accompanying the 41st Elite Corps under Jedi General Luminara Unduli and Clone Commander Gree. Clone Captain Jek was among these forces, landing on the planet via a Venator-class Star Destroyer after Yoda's task force breached the Separatist fleet, with Jek serving under Gree. The Kachirho Wookiee Militia and Republic forces established defenses on the beach. General Yoda observed the Separatist attack from the command post above the beach in Kachirho City, assisted by Commander Gree, Captain Jek, Wookiee Chieftain General Tarfful, and his lieutenant Chewbacca. Jedi Generals Unduli and Quinlan Vos directly participated in the battle. During this time, Darth Sidious, the Dark Lord of the Sith and publicly the Republic Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine, issued Order 66, a clone protocol mandating the immediate execution of all Jedi.

Clone Commander Gree and Clone Captain Jek lay dead after their unsuccessful assassination attempt.

Sensing a disturbance during Anakin Skywalker's fall to the dark side of the Force and a larger one as the Great Jedi Purge began, Commander Gree received the order via a hologram from Darth Sidious, confirming its execution. Gree, looking at Captain Jek, nodded, and both prepared their blasters to assassinate Yoda, whom Jek had protected on Rugosa years before.

However, Yoda had sensed the ripples in the Force caused by the widespread Jedi murders and anticipated the clones' actions. Before they could fire, Yoda swiftly leapt up and decapitated both with a single stroke of his lightsaber. As their bodies fell, Tarfful and Chewbacca escaped with Yoda through the jungle as the Separatists gained the advantage following the execution of Order 66. Surviving clone forces rallied under Commander Faie, and the Republic won the battle. Clone units unsuccessfully hunted down Yoda and subjugated their Wookiee allies.

Personality and traits

According to Master Yoda, Jek was obsessed with weaponry, believing superior firepower was essential for his team's strength. This was evident in his weapon of choice, the rotary blaster cannon. Yoda encouraged him to see his mind as a more potent tool than any weapon. Following their Rugosa mission, Jek painted battle-droid heads on his weapon.

Skills and abilities

As a clone trooper in the Grand Army of the Republic, Jek was proficient in armed and unarmed combat, heavy weaponry, and military tactics. He later re-trained as a scout, acquiring skills in reconnaissance and tracking. Jek also served as a clone trooper officer, assisting his superiors in battle observation.

Equipment

During his time in the Coruscant Guard, Jek wore white Phase I clone trooper armor with red markings and symbols indicating his unit affiliation, though these markings differed from standard Coruscant Guard designs. He further customized his armor with two hip holsters for a DC-17 hand blaster and a black bandolier. He primarily used his Z-6 rotary blaster cannon and an RPS-6 rocket launcher. After joining the Ranger Corps, Jek used Phase II ARF armor with green forest camouflage. On Kashyyyk, he used this armor with a DC-15A blaster carbine.

Behind the scenes

Jek's first appearance was in "Ambush," the premiere episode of the first season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which aired on Cartoon Network on October 3, 2008. Author Jason Fry retconned him as the clone trooper killed alongside Gree on Kashyyyk in the 2005 film Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith. Fry initially hinted at this in his 2020 short story "Sharing the Same Face," an adaptation of "Ambush" in The Clone Wars: Stories of Light and Dark, and later confirmed it in the 2021 reference book Star Wars: Battles that Changed the Galaxy, which he co-authored.
