Pyre's blaster

Commander Pyre's blaster, a unique F-11D blaster rifle, was the signature weapon of Pyre, a Commander within the First Order. This blaster, a product of the Sonn-Blas Corporation, was distinguished by its electrum coating, imparting a golden luster. Enhanced with a J20 electroscope and expanded heat dispersal vents, this blaster rifle was Pyre's constant companion throughout 34 ABY. While stationed aboard the Colossus refueling station orbiting the planet Castilon, he employed the weapon's stun setting during his hunt for the orphans Eila and Kel, who hailed from Tehar. When the Resistance cell on the Colossus submerged the station and disabled the communications jamming device, the commander carried the rifle to investigate on Doza Tower. A firefight ensued with Resistance fighters Kazuda Xiono and Jarek Yeager, resulting in Xiono being grazed and Yeager being apprehended. During the Battle of Castilon, the gold-armored stormtrooper again used his blaster, trading shots with Xiono and Yeager on Doza Tower. Subsequently, Pyre escaped the Colossus aboard a shuttle, his rifle in tow.

Later in 34 ABY, Pyre came across Neeku Vozo, a mechanic, and Xiono infiltrating the First Order fuel depot Titan. In section 1305 and later in the main hangar of the Titan, he discharged his rifle at the Resistance intruders. The pair, along with the droid CB-23, made their escape aboard a commandeered AAL-1971/9.1 Troop Transport. On Varkana, the commander once again encountered Xiono, blaster in hand. Although Xiono briefly stunned him, Pyre quickly recovered and re-engaged Xiono and his allies outside Vargo Spaceport. Pyre then utilized the blaster during Team Colossus's efforts to assist Tamara Ryvora, a former resident of the Colossus, in her defection from the First Order. During the battle, he was knocked unconscious and ultimately perished when the Thunderer was destroyed in the Barabesh system.

Description

Pyre's blaster represented a slightly improved and personalized version of the standard F-11D blaster rifle. This two-handed weapon sported an electrum finish, matching Pyre's gold-hued armor, which ensured the commander stood out among his fellow stormtroopers. The blaster incorporated an adjustable J20 electroscope for enhanced zoom capabilities and precision. Enlarged heat dispersal vents served to prevent the gun from overheating. Uniquely, Pyre's blaster was keyed to function only when used with the gloves of his armor. The rifle was capable of firing both blue stun blasts and red blaster bolts.

History

Patrolling the Colossus

Pyre firing stun blasts from his blaster

The personal weapon of Commander Pyre of the First Order, Pyre's blaster was produced by the Sonn-Blas Corporation. In 34 ABY, Pyre brought the blaster to the Colossus refueling station located on the planet Castilon. He carried the rifle while patrolling the marketplace in an effort to locate two orphaned survivors of the attack on Tehar, as the First Order sought to conceal their involvement. Upon spotting Kel, one of the Tehar orphans, Pyre pursued the child into the Colossus Engineering Level, firing the blaster on stun during the chase. After entering engineering, the commander menaced a group of Chelidae engineers of the Colossus, demanding they reveal the location of Kel and his sister Eila. After the Chelidae parted to reveal the Tehar children, Pyre gave them a choice: come with him or face destruction. The children then feigned their deaths by jumping into the ocean of Castilon, satisfying Pyre, who believed them dead.

Later that year, following the First Order's increased occupation of the fuel depot, Pyre carried his blaster while trying to apprehend Team Fireballmechanics Tamara Ryvora, Neeku Vozo, Kazuda Xiono, and Jarek Yeager—because the Fireball had entered restricted First Order territory, Sector Epsilon 51-3. When the astromech droid R1-J5 created a diversion for Team Fireball to escape, Pyre opened fire on the mechanics as they fled into Yeager's office, with the exception of Ryvora, who surrendered. He shot R1-J5, causing the droid to fall off the platform. Later, after the Colossus was sunken into Castilon's ocean and Pyre learned that the communication jammer had been disabled, the commander took his blaster outside Doza Tower to investigate, retrieving the weapon en route. Pyre discovered the BB unit CB-23, Xiono, and Yeager attempting to communicate with the Resistance and exchanged fire with Yeager, grazing Xiono's arm. While CB-23 and Xiono escaped, Pyre and his forces arrested Yeager at blaster-point.

The Battle of Castilon

When Imanuel Doza, the Colossus's captain, confronted Pyre in Doza's office about Yeager's arrest and the platform's occupation, the commander demanded Doza's arrest. On Doza's order, 4D-M1N, the captain's loyal droid, entered attack mode and engaged the First Order forces. Although she eliminated several troopers, Pyre disabled the droid with three blaster shots. He held Doza at blaster-point while reinforcements arrived to take the captain to the brig under his command.

Later, after Pyre agreed with Agent Tierny of the First Order Security Bureau in Doza's office to remove Ryvora from the platform, he carried his blaster as they escorted the prisoner to a shuttle outside Doza Tower. When Xiono revealed himself atop the tower to prevent Ryvora from joining the First Order, Pyre aimed through his blaster's J20 electroscope, but Tierny discouraged him, allowing Ryvora and Xiono to speak. When Yeager arrived to help Xiono, the commander trained his blaster on him. Stormtroopers surrounded the Resistance cell, and Pyre demanded that Xiono and Yeager drop their weapons, which Xiono protested, mockingly suggesting Pyre drop his blaster instead. On Xiono's command, Vozo activated the Colossus's thrusters, disrupting the First Order's perimeter around the Resistance cell. Pyre opened fire on Xiono and his allies atop the tower while waiting for the shuttle to return and then retreated onto the vessel.

Time away from Castilon

Later in 34 ABY, Pyre attended a meeting in the Titan's space station tower briefing room. When an alarm interrupted the meeting, he was informed of a Code Three incident in Engineering. Pyre equipped his blaster and left the briefing room, accompanied by General Armitage Hux and two stormtroopers. The commander and his companions found Vozo and Xiono disguised as First Order technicians in section 1305 and opened fire on the Resistance infiltrators. Though the Resistance agents escaped through a blast door, Pyre encountered the duo again in the Titan's main hangar, firing at them as they fled into a stolen AAL-1971/9.1 Troop Transport. Pyre shot the transport multiple times, but the Resistance members escaped the Titan.

On Varkana, Pyre was carrying his blaster on patrol when he encountered Resistance spy Norath Kev and Xiono disguised as stormtroopers. He was caught off guard when Xiono stun-blasted him, causing him to fall unconscious and drop his blaster. Pyre regained consciousness and caught up with the Resistance agents outside Vargo Spaceport, firing at their Star Commuter 2000 with his rifle as they fled.

Kylo Ren threatens Pyre and Tierny.

Pyre had his blaster holstered while meeting with Tierny in her office, with Hux joining via hologram. Supreme Leader Kylo Ren replaced Hux and expressed his displeasure at Pyre and Tierny's failure to capture the Colossus. Ren used the Force to compel Pyre and Tierny to aim their blasters at each other, stressing he would not tolerate failure again. Ren released his hold, and the commander soon left the office, blaster holstered. Pyre kept the weapon on his person as he stood on the Resurgent-class Star Destroyer Thunderer's bridge, where he learned of Ryvora's attempt to defect.

Pyre's fiery demise

When Ryvora was captured in a stolen transport, Pyre accompanied Tierny to the hangar to oversee the arrest. As the traitor was escorted away, a stormtrooper discovered the vehicle was set to self-destruct, but Pyre could not escape the blast. The commander was knocked prone, losing his blaster. In the aftermath, CB-23, Xiono, and Yeager were discovered, and a firefight broke out. The commander retrieved his blaster and joined the fight, chasing Xiono and Yeager into the Thunderer's corridors. While the destroyer went into lockdown, Pyre returned with his blaster to the bridge, where he remained until learning of Ryvora's escape. At that point, Pyre joined the search with his weapon, leading troopers back to the hangar and setting up an ambush for the Resistance members. Eventually, Pyre captured the entire group except CB-23.

Pyre escorted the group to the destroyer's bridge, where he and Tierny invited the captives to observe the Colossus's destruction after the former vessel traveled through hyperspace to encounter it. The commander then departed for the hangar with his blaster to organize a boarding party. While directing troopers, Pyre learned of the prisoners' escape. He discovered Yeager attempting to rappel from the rafters and exchanged fire. Yeager caused a crane to explode, resulting in Pyre losing his footing and dropping his blaster. After recovering, Pyre blew up a canister with a blaster bolt, scattering the Resistance group. He holstered his blaster and wielded a BL-155 Laser ax as he approached Xiono, who was pinned under cargo, with murderous intent. Through CB-23's intervention, Xiono knocked the gold-armored stormtrooper unconscious with a blow from another laser ax. Pyre then perished aboard the Thunderer when the destroyer exploded in the Barabesh system.

Pyre's blaster debuted in "The Children from Tehar," the sixth episode of the first season of Star Wars Resistance, which premiered on November 4, 2018. The weapon was previewed earlier on August 17 in the series's first trailer, posted on StarWars.com and the official Disney YouTube channel.

In the episode guide for "The Children from Tehar" on StarWars.com, the blaster was first identified as "Pyre's blaster." The guide also featured concept art by Amy Beth Christenson, art director for Star Wars Resistance, completed on February 28, 2017. The blaster's model was based on Phasma's blaster, with only a color change to dull gold. The gold finish of the blaster and Pyre's armor was intended to make the commander unique, interesting, and fitting for the sequel trilogy. Dave Filoni, the series creator, chose the color scheme, which Brandon Auman, executive producer, felt referenced the Pittsburgh Steelers, Filoni's hometown football team.

On April 13, 2019, the StarWars.com article "SWCC 2019: 7 Things We Learned from the Hasbro Star Wars Panel" previewed new additions to Hasbro's The Black Series line, including Pyre. In the preview, Pyre's blaster was a black F-11D blaster rifle, though the final product, released the following month, featured the correct colors. In part two of "The Escape," the finale of the second season that premiered on January 26, 2020, when Kazuda Xiono knocks Pyre out, the blaster disappears from his hip.
