The temporal period identified as 3956 years prior to the Battle of Yavin (BBY), which also equates to 303 years before the Treaty of Coruscant (BTC), was characterized by the ongoing and ultimate resolution of the Jedi Civil War. This conflict originated three years prior with the resurgence of former Jedi war heroes Revan and Malak as Sith Lords. These newly emerged dark lords, along with members of the Republic Navy who had succumbed to the influence of the dark side of the Force, launched an invasion of Republic space, igniting the war. However, by 3956 BBY, Darth Revan had been captured by a Jedi task force under the command of Jedi Knight Bastila Shan.
The Mandalorian Wars, a galactic-scale conflict, reached its conclusion in 3960 BBY when Revan, a Jedi, and his apprentice Malak joined the fight, shifting the war's momentum. Under the pretense of hunting down the remaining Mandalorian clans, the war heroes, together with a significant portion of the Republic Navy, retreated into the Unknown Regions. In the Unknown Regions, Revan and Malak corrupted the Jedi and those who served the Republic. Both Jedi succumbed to the dark side and became Dark Lords of the Sith, known as Darth Revan and Darth Malak.
During their time beyond the boundaries of Republic space, Revan and Malak gathered data from Star Maps during their travels throughout the Republic, ultimately gaining access to the Star Forge, an ancient manufacturing facility located in the Lehon system. The dark lords used the Star Forge's power to amass a sizable fleet and other resources, including droids and weaponry. Under the banner of a Sith Empire, the former war heroes betrayed the Republic and launched an invasion.
Darth Revan's initial strategy involved capturing strategically significant Republic planets and installations, while preserving their infrastructure. By 3957 BBY, multiple battlefronts had emerged across the galaxy. The Republic navy suffered a major defeat at Foerost. The Sith Empire seized and held key locations along hyperspace routes, including Roche, Axxila, Allanteen Six, and Yag'Dhul. Other conflict hotspots included Czerka 431, AB-343, Telos IV, Iridonia, Rodia, Mon Gazza, and Lannik. However, in that year, a Jedi strike team was dispatched to capture Darth Revan. The strike team, led by Jedi Knight Bastila Shan, captured Revan, partly due to Darth Malak's treachery, and brought him before the Jedi Council. The Jedi erased Revan's memory, gave him a new identity, and assigned him as a soldier under Shan's command.
Malak, having seized control of the Sith Empire from Revan, initiated a search for the Jedi Knight Bastila Shan. Malak was wary of her ability of battle meditation, a Force power capable of influencing the morale of combatants in a battle, potentially giving the Republic an advantage. Shan and her flagship, the Endar Spire, were tracked by Malak aboard the Leviathan to the Taris system. The Sith attacked the Endar Spire above the planet Taris. Shan boarded an escape pod during the attack, which crashed on the planet's surface. Revan, unaware of his true identity, was stationed on the ship under Shan's command at the same time. He and his cabinmate Trask Ulgo fought through the boarding party of Sith troopers to get to the bridge. The pair sought out a lieutenant named Carth Onasi, who was tracking them through the Endar Spire's life support systems, after seeing that Shan had evacuated. Revan and Ulgo encountered Darth Bandon, Malak's new apprentice, along the way. While Revan escaped, Ulgo engaged Bandon in combat. Revan was able to meet up with Onasi and board the final remaining escape pod thanks to Ulgo's sacrifice.
Onasi pulled Revan from the wreckage after they crashed on Taris and found refuge in an abandoned Upper City apartment. The pair developed a plan inside the apartment to rescue the Jedi and leave the planet. Darth Malak, meanwhile, remained determined to prevent Shan from escaping. He placed the planet under quarantine, cutting off all access to and from Taris. Revan and Onasi eventually made their way into the Lower City on the surface. The pair got in touch with Gadon Thek, the leader of the Hidden Beks swoop gang. The Republic soldiers learned from Thek that Shan had been taken prisoner by the rival swoop gang, the Black Vulkars. Brejik, their leader, was holding Shan prisoner and intended to present her as the prize for the Tarisian Season Opener, the season's first significant swoop race.
Thek and Revan reached an agreement in which he and Onasi would retrieve a prototype accelerator that the Vulkars had stolen in exchange for the chance to compete in the race. Revan and Onasi joined forces with Mission Vao, a young Twi'lek, in the Undercity, and the three of them assisted in freeing Vao's Wookiee friend Zaalbar from Gamorrean slavers before venturing deep into the Undercity sewers. The team used the sewers as a means of access to begin their incursion into the Vulkar Base. The party successfully obtained the prototype accelerator after a firefight. Revan was permitted by Thek to participate in the Season Opener, just as he had promised. Brejik refused to award his advertised prize after Revan won the race, and he and his allies started a brawl. Shan freed herself during the altercation, and she and Revan together defeated Brejik and the other Vulkars.
Revan and his team needed to flee Taris after saving Bastila Shan. The Sith had also been looking for the Jedi, though unsuccessfully, while the Republic-sided team had been looking for her. Malak, incensed by the lack of progress, gave the Sith fleet orders to get ready for an orbital bombardment in an effort to kill the Jedi. At the same time, Canderous Ordo approached Revan with a scheme to break through the blockade. Ordo suggested that Revan steal the blockade codes from the Sith Military Base, and then Ordo would provide a ship to leave the planet. Revan concurred and got T3-M4 from Janice Nall to help with the infiltration. Revan broke into the base and, after a duel with the Force-sensitive Sith Governor, successfully stole the launch codes. Ordo took Revan to the estate of crime lord Davik Kang after acquiring the codes, in the hopes of stealing his flagship, the Ebon Hawk. Darth Malak gave the Sith fleet the order to open fire on the surface of Taris just as the team was about to seize the ship. This prompted Kang and bounty hunter Calo Nord to arrive at the hangar at the same time as Revan and Ordo. The pair killed Kang in a scuffle and stole the ship while Nord was buried in falling debris.
Carth Onasi piloted the Ebon Hawk away from the planet surface with Revan and his team aboard. All the while, the urban surface of Taris was being reduced to rubble. Sith fighters were dispatched to attack the freighter as it was seen fleeing the planet. The fighters were destroyed by Revan as the Ebon Hawk entered hyperspace while the planet was being destroyed.
Revan and his companions traveled to the planet of Dantooine following their escape from Taris so Bastila Shan could speak with the Jedi Council. Shan spoke with the council members about the Force awakening within Revan after landing at the Jedi Enclave proper. The former Sith Lord had been having visions through the Force, and Shan was concerned about this development. Revan underwent training in the ways of the Jedi at the Jedi Council's suggestion. He quickly relearned many of the skills and feats he had previously mastered, still unaware of his history as a former Force-wielder. Revan was tasked with cleansing a dark taint that had entered an ancient grove close to the Enclave as part of his training. There, he ran into Juhani, a Cathar Padawan who had turned to the dark side after believing she had killed her master in a duel. Juhani was saved and went back to the enclave after being spared and speaking with Revan. Later, she was chosen to join Revan's crew.
Revan was assigned to search ancient ruins close to the Enclave, from which another Jedi named Nemo had not returned, after successfully cleansing the grove. The ruins turned out to be far older than the Republic itself, and they held an ancient Star Map. Revan learned some limited details about the Star Forge after speaking with an ancient droid inside the ruins. The masters charged Revan and his crew with embarking on a quest for the Star Forge after he reported his findings to the Jedi Council. Darth Malak, meanwhile, had grown unhappy with Bastila Shan's escape from his grasp. The bounty hunter Calo Nord had made his way to the Leviathan to meet the dark lord after surviving the bombardment. Nord revealed Shan's escape with the aid of Republic soldiers and offered his services to track them down. Malak agreed to Nord's price and sent the bounty hunter to pursue the escapees across the galaxy.
Revan's crew consisted of Carth Onasi, Bastila Shan, Mission Vao, Zaalbar, T3-M4, Canderous Ordo, and Juhani when they left Dantooine. The crew started going to the locations displayed on the Star Map, carrying out the commission the Council had given them. The planet Tatooine in the Outer Rim was the first stop. The Ebon Hawk touched down there at the mining colony of Anchorhead, which was under the control of the Czerka Corporation. Revan was made aware of the conflict between the mining teams of the Czerka Corporation and the Sand People when the local protocol officer requested Revan to step in and put an end to the local tribe. Revan peacefully resolved the conflict by giving the local chieftain moisture vaporators in exchange for restricting attacks on the miners, after obtaining the HK-47 droid from Yuka Laka for translation purposes. Revan was given the chance to hunt a krayt dragon by Komad Fortuna in the process. The pair accepted and killed the enormous creature. It was discovered that the cave was more ancient ruins which contained a Star Map. Revan did, however, run into the bounty hunter Calo Nord before leaving Tatooine. Nord had followed the Ebon Hawk crew to the ruins outside of Anchorhead and set up an ambush for them with the help of other mercenaries. Revan and his team, however, dispatched the bounty hunters and went on with his crew to the planet Kashyyyk in search of another Star Map.
The Czerka-controlled spaceport close to the tree-level city of Rwookrrorro was where the Ebon Hawk landed on Kashyyyk. Revan and his crew were introduced to the Wookiee slave trade that Czerka had placed on the natives with the aid of Chuundar, the local chieftain and Zaalbar's brother. Revan and his team requested an audience with the chieftain in order to search the planet's surface in search of the planet's Star Map. Chuundar granted the explorer access to the surface, called the Shadowlands, under the condition that he dispose of an expelled Wookiee. Zaalbar, however, was required to remain on Rwookrrorro. Revan did, however, run into former Jedi Jolee Bindo when he started exploring the Shadowlands, and Bindo agreed to help Revan during his search of the Shadowlands. Eventually, the team ran into the expelled Wookiee, who turned out to be Freyyr, the former chieftain and father of Chuundar and Zaalbar. Revan retrieved a Wookiee relic for Freyyr so he could challenge his son who had usurped power, rather than killing the deposed leader. The team then continued to search deeper into the Shadowlands, ultimately discovering an ancient computer with a Star Map attached. Revan and his team went back to the Rwookrrorro village after gaining access to the Map. Freyyr had returned to the village to challenge his son for the true title of chieftain in the meantime. A skirmish broke out when Revan and his team arrived, siding with Freyyr. An uprising against the Czerka slavers on the planet took place after Chuundar and his allies were defeated in the chieftain's quarters.
Revan and his team traveled to the oceanic planet of Manaan following Kashyyyk, landing at Ahto City, the only settlement above water. The team started looking for the fourth Star Map there. Revan and Shan concurred through a Force vision that the Map was located underwater. Revan made arrangements with representatives at the Republic Embassy to use a submersible to reach the ocean floor at the Republic's Hrakert Station, a harvesting facility for the healing agent kolto in the Hrakert Rift. Revan was tasked with retrieving data from a probe droid that had been stolen by Sith agents on Manaan in exchange for this. Revan and his team faced a large number of Sith troopers, security droids, and Dark Jedi while infiltrating the Sith Embassy. They were able to retrieve the data, though, and they also came across a scheme to indoctrinate young Selkath youth to join the Sith cause against the Selkath society's policy of neutrality. Revan found out that Galas, one of the youth, had been tortured and killed in the process. The Sith's scheme was stopped from moving forward by revealing this to the other youth and the Ahto City authorities.
Revan traveled to Hrakert Station after retrieving the stolen data for the Republic. He discovered that the Selkath workers had gone insane and killed the Republic officials there. The Progenitor, a sizable firaxan shark that lived in the rift, was determined to be the source of their insanity. The Progenitor, who the Selkath thought to be the guardian of the kolto and the mother of their species, had let out a cry that drove the Selkath nearby insane. Revan also found the Star Map in the rift at the same time, but he was unable to access it because of the large firaxan shark's actions. Revan needed to destroy the portion of Hrakert Station that was encroaching into the rift for kolto harvesting in order to appease the Progenitor. A chain reaction that destroyed part of the station and calmed the Progenitor occurred when the chemicals were overloaded. Revan was able to easily access the Star Map in the rift once the large firaxan shark had been appeased.

The Jedi Civil War's conclusion in 3956 BBY brought a brief period of tranquility to the Republic, which had been struggling with the war's effects. Numerous planets had been devastated, and trade throughout the Republic had been disrupted. Even five years after the war ended, refugees were still living in places like Nar Shaddaa, and the Republic's economy was still on the verge of collapse. Furthermore, the military that had fought the Sith Empire was in ruins and exhausted.
The defeated Sith Empire, on the other hand, was left in ruins. Those who remained split into smaller groups that fought against one another, starting the Sith Civil War. Darth Traya, Darth Nihilus, and Darth Sion started their ascent to power two years later and reunited the remnants of Revan's former empire. Their rise to power would result in the First Jedi Purge and the return of the exiled Jedi.
The conflict was able to continue in the Kanz sector due to the Republic's lack of intervention.
