Voss

Voss, a terrestrial world, existed within the Voss system, situated in the Allied Tion sector of the Outer Rim Territories. This planet was originally inhabited by only one sentient species, the Gormak. Ancient Sith discovered Voss and exploited its resources until the Jedi arrived, driving them away. Seeking native allies, the Jedi instructed some Gormak tribes in the Force. However, the Gormak were unprepared, causing those tribes to drastically evolve into a distinct species known as the Voss. The Sith were eliminated, the Jedi departed or perished, and the Voss settled on a mountain peak, establishing the city of Voss-Ka. Voss society then looked to Force-sensitives for leadership, as Voss Mystics experienced invariably accurate Force visions. Interpreters ensured correct understanding of each vision, and the Three ruled over all Voss. Nomadic Gormak considered the Voss abominations and became extremely hostile, attempting to eradicate them. Consequently, every Voss served as a Voss commando to ensure survival against millions of Gormak, while the Mystics developed healing rituals for severe injuries.

During the Cold War between the Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic, Voss was discovered by the wider galaxy, and both powers sought an alliance to leverage the Mystics' visions for the war. However, Voss resisted conquest, thwarting the Imperial Attack on Voss, and remained neutral due to the Star Cabal, whose agent Albathius persuaded them to maintain neutrality for three thousand days. With the renewed Galactic War, Voss became a battleground as both sides tried to gain favor by aiding the Voss against the Gormak. Meanwhile, the Sith plotted to discredit the Republic, smuggle an army of cyberbeasts offworld, and even hold Voss-Ka hostage. During this period, the capture of Gormak King Jokull revealed the shared origins of the Voss and Gormak, while a mission by the Hero of Tython led to the death of Sel-Makor, the source of corruption in the Nightmare Lands.

When the Eternal Empire of Zakuul conquered the galaxy, the Voss and Gormak ended their centuries-long conflict and united against the greater threat. Voss Mystic Sana-Rae and Gormak warrior Rokuss left the planet to join the Alliance opposing Zakuul, helping to destroy the Star Fortress dominating Voss. Later, the Eternal Fleet directly attacked Voss, destroying the Shrine of Healing and causing significant damage to Voss-Ka, until the combined efforts of the Alliance, Mandalorian warriors, and the Imperial fleet repelled the attack, though thousands still perished. By the time of the Galactic Empire millennia later, Tionese clans controlled Voss.

Description

Voss and its moon

Voss possessed a temperate climate and firm ground. Approximately half of the planet consisted of rocky plateaus, pristine peaks, and lush forests, while the remaining portion was covered by seas and oceans. Grasslands, such as those in the Serenity Valley, transitioned into unspoiled forests like the Western Watchwoods, interspersed with occasional outposts of Voss commandos or small camps of nomadic Gormak. Local predators included the mawvorr, also known as crysfangs—purple-skinned reptilians that were opportunistic hunters, preferring to attack wounded animals or wandering humanoids rather than meticulously hunting and stalking prey. Shaclaws, large armored insects with powerful foreclaws used for burrowing into the soil to find roots and subterranean mammals, could also tear flesh or armor, aided by the deadly toxins contaminating their tissue shortly after death.

Voss landscape

The largest and deadliest predator was the vorantikus, heavily muscled bipedal creatures that hunted alone in the wilds. Voss also hosted a population of uxibeasts, mammalian pack herbivores with numerous horns. These creatures were believed to have originated on Tython but were spread to other planets by the ancient Jedi.

History

Eternal War

Ruins of an ancient Jedi city on Voss

In ancient times, sometime after the Second Great Schism, the Sith arrived on Voss, which at that point had only the Gormak as its sentient species. Viewing them as primitive, the Sith ignored them and began exploiting the planet's resources. However, the Jedi attempted to drive the Sith off Voss, irrevocably changing the planet and the Gormak. Seeking allies among the natives, the Jedi agreed to teach some of the Gormak tribes how to use the Force, but the Gormak were unprepared for this knowledge. Over a few generations, those tribes underwent radical evolutionary changes, becoming a new species called the Voss. The Jedi tried to teach the Voss to control their emotions and new powers, but instead, the Voss attacked the Sith, bringing the new species into contact with the dark side of the Force. This caused the dark side to manifest in a Sith structure, with this entity becoming known as Sel-Makor as it gained intelligence. Sel-Makor fed on violence and suffering, enhancing its dark side powers and spreading corruption across the area. The entity twisted the minds of animals and beings within its reach, turning them into crazed servants. The area under Sel-Makor's control became the Nightmare Lands, and the ancient Sith complex it inhabited was known as the Dark Heart. After the Sith were exterminated, the Voss forgot their origins and founded Voss-Ka on the planet's highest peak, while the Jedi eventually died out or left. Those Voss who could use the Force to see the future became the ruling Mystics, and the Voss commandos protected the city. Meanwhile, Sel-Makor influenced the Gormak's bloodlust, driving the far more numerous species to attack their cousins throughout the centuries to feed off their dark emotions.

Cold War

Following the Treaty of Coruscant, which concluded the Great Galactic War between the Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic, Voss was accidentally rediscovered by the broader galaxy several years before 3640 BBY. Upon learning of the Voss' prophetic abilities, Sith Emperor Vitiate ordered the planet to be conquered, and General Khypes arrived in orbit with a battlecruiser and several army divisions to demand surrender, believing Voss-Ka to be undefended. However, Khypes' cruiser exploded before he could contact the planet, and its escorts were destroyed moments later. During this time, agents of the Emperor's Hand kidnapped a Voss from the surface for the Emperor's own purposes. Realizing their underestimation, the Empire claimed Khypes had gone rogue, and both the Empire and the Republic began diplomatic approaches to the Voss.

Jokull, the Gormak King

However, a secret society known as the Star Cabal thwarted their efforts to gain Voss Mystics on their side. An operative named Albathius arrived on Voss shortly after its rediscovery and gained significant influence among the Mystics, becoming known as the "Shining Man." He convinced the Voss to remain neutral during the Cold War for three thousand days, allowing the Star Cabal to exert its own influence on the war and prevent the Voss from choosing a side. The Shining Man promised that the Gormak, the Empire, and the Republic would eventually be eradicated, and no offworlders would return to Voss. He was buried under Voss-Ka after his death. Around the same time, Darth Baras, a Sith Lord, began plotting against the Emperor. Learning of Sel-Makor's existence, Baras met with the entity and promised the Emperor's powers if Sel-Makor imprisoned the Emperor, who was inhabiting the body of a Voss in a long line of the Emperor's Voices. The inner chamber of the Dark Heart was a place from which no Voss could escape.

During the Cold War, a Gormak named Jokull entered the Nightmare Lands and traveled to the Dark Heart, entering the cave known as the Dark Hollow where Sel-Makor was most powerful. Instead of consuming Jokull's mind, Sel-Makor awakened his species' natural ability—the power to see visions like the Voss. Horrified by his corruption and seeing all Voss as tainted by evil due to their powers, Jokull returned to the Gormak Lands and became king to wage war on the Voss, preventing his people from similar corruption. Around 3640 BBY, the Emperor decided to investigate Voss himself, arriving in the guise of a Mystic and entering the Dark Heart, only to find himself trapped. The Emperor was forced to battle Sel-Makor for control of the Voss body he was inhabiting. Weakened by the loss of his avatars and desiring the Emperor's unimaginable power, the entity prevented him from releasing his spirit by committing suicide and attempting to suppress the Sith's mind.

Galactic War

A female Voss Mystic

Both galactic powers continued their diplomatic efforts on Voss until the Cold War ended and they engaged in another Galactic War elsewhere, struggling to maintain neutrality on Voss. Seeking an alliance, both the Republic and the Empire aided the Voss in their fight against the Gormak. On the advice of Darth Serevin, their top diplomat, the Sith helped the Voss destroy Gormegan-1, a starship being built by the Gormak under Jokull's orders. The Republic helped the Voss destroy the cannon the Gormak were building to use against Voss-Ka. However, the Voss discovered Jokull's ability to see the future and enlisted outsiders to retrace his steps in the Nightmare Lands, uncovering the truth of their species' creation.

The death of Sel-Makor

During the same year, Baras' apprentice had been appointed the new Emperor's Wrath at the Emperor's request by agents of his Hand. The Emperor managed to communicate his situation to Servant Two of the Hand in a moment of strength. The Wrath, whom Baras had tried to kill at the beginning of his coup attempt, traveled to Voss and located the Emperor in the Dark Heart after obtaining the Blessing of Oneness and the Pendant of Bone required for entrance. The Emperor ordered the Wrath to kill the Voice and free his essence, but Sel-Makor refused to relinquish his prize and seized full control of the Voice's body. The Wrath was forced to battle the possessed Voice, managing to defeat the entity and drive it out long enough to slay the Emperor's host. After taking a new host on Dromund Kaas, the Imperial capital, the Emperor continued preparations for his ritual, which would consume all life in the galaxy and channel it into him. To that end, he dispatched the Sith sorcerer Fulminiss to Voss, ordering him to use Sel-Makor's power to ensure the thousands of simultaneous deaths necessary to start the ritual. Fulminiss approached Valen-Da, a young Mystic, and enlisted his help to enter the Shrine of Healing, a Voss sanctuary.

Tala-Reh sacrifices herself to defeat Sel-Makor

In the Shrine of Healing, Fulminiss learned a healing ritual from the spirits of long-dead Mystics, then corrupted it to twist minds and drive its victims insane. With Valen-Da, Fulminiss traveled to the Dark Heart to meet Sel-Makor. However, the Jedi Knight, known as the Hero of Tython, was attempting to thwart the Emperor's ritual and tracked Fulminiss to the Dark Heart with the help of Tala-Reh, a Voss Commando. Fulminiss fell to the Jedi Knight's blade in battle, and Valen-Da revealed his vision: the Commando would descend into the heart of Sel-Makor's power and destroy the entity at the cost of her life. Tala-Reh descended the steps to confront the entity, and her sacrifice counteracted Sel-Makor's powers, destroying the creature with a burst of Force energy and sealing the heart of power when the chamber collapsed into the pit.

The Sith machinations

The ZR-57 bomb under Voss-Ka

Havoc Squad of the Republic Special Forces Division was assigned to Voss by General Elin Garza to stop Senator Evran from withholding thousands of Republic soldiers from the war effort, fearing another Imperial attack on Voss despite the desperate need for troops elsewhere. Evran personally greeted Havoc Squad's Major in Voss-Ka, suggesting they let the Imperials make the first move. Havoc Squad pursued Deadfall, an Imperial agent known for spreading subversion before Imperial invasions. Havoc fought into Deadfall's secret base under Voss-Ka, establishing a link with Evran's office for Kellor, an SIS agent. Deadfall arrived and attacked, forcing Havoc to kill him. Based on Deadfall's data, Kellor confirmed that smuggler Pol Blex made multiple deliveries to Voss for the Empire. Havoc stormed Blex's hideout and learned from the Neimoidian that he smuggled tunneling equipment and a stolen ZR-57 orbital strike bomb from Ord Mantell onto Voss. After Havoc thwarted the Imperials in Gorma-Koss, Evran informed them that Kellor had discovered the bomb's location but was shot down and crashed in the Nightmare Lands. Finding Kellor, Havoc discovered the SIS agent succumbing to the Nightmare Lands' corruption. Before expiring, Kellor gave them the bomb's location. Havoc found the bomb and uncovered Sith Lord Torius's plan to use it to hold Voss-Ka hostage, thwarting the Sith's plan and killing him.

The Gormal Hadrik uses the dream-rock in the Spirit World

Darth Nox, a Sith Lord whose mind required healing after being overwhelmed by a Force walking ritual, traveled to Voss seeking the Forbidden Ritual that could help. At the Imperial Embassy in Voss-Ka, Kallig met with Athelis Kallis, the Imperial ambassador, who suggested seeking out the outcast Dream-walkers cult. Kallig arrived at the cult's enclave at the Mind healer's grove and, with the permission of their leader Asa-Ku, underwent their initiation ritual to learn their mind-healing ritual, which caused Kallig to enter the Spirit World. Upon returning, Asa-Ku directed Kallig to the Shrine of Healing, where the disembodied voice of Mar-Da, a Voss and the first dream-walker, addressed Kallig, stating that the mind-healing ritual was forbidden. Kallig forced Mar-Da to reveal that a dream-rock in the Nightmare Lands could defeat the ghosts bound to Kallig by turning them to flesh and blood, but only a Gormak could use it. Journeying to Gorma-Koss, Kallig used dream-walking to communicate with Hadrik, a sympathetic Gormak tired of the Voss-Gormak conflict. Hadrik agreed to perform the ritual in exchange for passage offworld. They traveled to the Nightmare Lands, found the dream-rock containing the spirit of Dal-Rin, a Voss. Dal-Rin instructed Hadrik on using the rock on the ghosts and defeating them. They stripped away the ghosts' disguises and defeated them one-by-one, after which Kallig used the rock to heal themselves. Upon returning to the Voss Orbital Docking Station, Kallig and Hadrik were met by Sor-Nak, a Voss commando, who declared that by taking a Gormak off Voss, his people would reject the Empire. To preserve Imperial interests, Kallig used a mind trick to make Sor-Nak forget about Hadrik.

Smugglers and bounty hunters

A male Voss commando

A bounty hunter working for Darth Tormen arrived on Voss to eliminate Thelonia Redrish, a female Kuati General heading the Republic diplomatic effort on Voss. Working with Imperial Ambassador Methias Yoran, the Grand Champion of the Great Hunt uncovered evidence that Thelonia was covertly launching strikes against Imperial holdings and attempted to convince the Voss to hand her over. However, the General challenged the Champion's evidence at a Voss hearing, accusing the Hunter of terrorism, arguing the evidence was suspect, and boasting of her pilgrimage to the Shrine of Healing. Yoran, eager to portray the Empire favorably, volunteered the Champion to undertake the trials as well. Thelonia, not wanting the bounty hunter to succeed, convinced a Voss Mystic at the shrine that the Champion would interfere with the coming change to Voss. Evading attempted detainment, Thelonia journeyed to Gorma-Koss and surrendered to the Gormak, attempting negotiations. While Jokull, the Gormak King, would not listen, some dissidents journeyed with her to the Nightmare Lands, where she discovered inscriptions detailing past battles between Jedi and Sith on Voss, who exploited the natives. Confronted by the Champion, she was defeated.

A mawvorr augmented with cybernetics by the Gormak

A captain of smugglers, identified as the Voidhound, made their way to Voss. Their objective was to secure a transaction involving Gormak cyberbeasts that had been illicitly taken off-planet by the Exchange. These beasts were intended for Rogun the Butcher, a crime lord. Lokir-Ka, a Voss Diplomat, stepped forward to act as the government's liaison for the smuggler. He directed them to Scratch, his contact within the Exchange located in the Minev-Ra Caves. Scratch then connected the smuggler with Jela Reneke, who, aware that the intended recipient was Rogun's most sought-after bounty, set an ambush. She abandoned the smuggler amidst evidence of her own unlawful activities and alerted the Voss Adjudicators. Lokir-Ka delayed the Adjudicators, allowing the Voidhound to escape. Later, the Voidhound infiltrated the residence of Gormak Zak, Reneke's partner. Zak displayed no hostility and revealed his disdain for Reneke, citing an act she committed that was considered deeply offensive by the Gormak. Reneke had recruited Gormak to assist her in applying cybernetic enhancements to creatures from the Nightmare Lands as part of a special contract for the Sith Lord Wratchen. She led a group of Gormak into the Nightmare Lands, where the survivors returned driven to madness by their experiences. Gormak Zak then decided to assist the Voidhound by providing Reneke's coordinates. Reneke, suffering from the Dark Heart's mind-altering influence, was in a meeting with Wratchen in Lab 68 when the Voidhound disrupted their gathering, resulting in the deaths of both individuals. Lokir-Ka insisted on presenting the matter to the Adjudicators, with his wife Mirev-Ka presiding over the proceedings while Lokir-Ka acted as the defendant. The Adjudicators acquitted the Voidhound of cyberbeast smuggling but found them guilty of other offenses, including dealings with the Gormak and venturing into the Nightmare Lands.

Gaden-Ko's rite of passage

Gaden-Ko is healed in a Voss healing ritual

The Jedi known as the Barsen'thor arrived on Voss seeking a Voss Mystic to assist them in their Hunt for the Children of the Emperor. They engaged with Sophia Farash, the Republic Ambassador, who believed that aiding a potential Mystic in completing their pilgrimage was the optimal approach to securing a Mystic's assistance. Gaden-Ko, a young Mystic candidate who, upon successful completion of the rites, would gain a large group of healers and Voss commandos, had already commenced his pilgrimage in the Old Paths region. Concerned for Gaden-Ko's well-being, Farash requested that the Jedi track him. Entering the sacred grounds, now overrun with wild animals, the Jedi rescued and healed Gaden-Ko. He then agreed to allow the Jedi to guide him during his pilgrimage to the Shrine of Healing. They proceeded to a marker called the Ruins of Wisdom to pay homage to a holy figure named Lishi-Na. While there, Gaden-Ko was ambushed by a Sith Lord named Shendan, who stabbed him in the back with a poisoned knife. This was an attempt to frame the Republic for Gaden-Ko's murder, as the blade was laced with a Republic toxin. The Barsen'thor engaged and defeated Shendan before escorting the injured Gaden-Ko to the Shrine of Healing. There, they immediately sought out Orin-Va and Asha-Mu, two healers who attended to Gaden-Ko. Upon regaining consciousness, Gaden-Ko confided in his guide his belief that he needed to complete the next phase of his pilgrimage. This involved meditating beside an ancient carving at a sacred site to receive a guiding sign. However, the carving had been shattered long ago, with its pieces scattered throughout the nearby city of Gorma-Koss, a territory controlled by the Gormak.

The Barsen'thor located the fragmented pieces of the carving and reassembled them at the Halls of the Righteous, where Gaden-Ko meditated upon the carving, but received no sign. A squad of Voss commandos appeared just in time to save Gaden-Ko from a Gormak assassin who had infiltrated the sacred halls and attempted to kill him. The commando leader explained that the Gormak were operating a nearby mining camp where they mined valuable crystals. Interpreting the commandos' arrival as the sign Gaden-Ko sought, the Jedi agreed to dismantle the Gormak's mining operation. Gaden-Ko then declared that the next destination on their journey was the Deep Cradle in the Dark Heart, located within the Nightmare Lands. The Barsen'thor and Gaden-Ko entered the Deep Cradle, where they discovered three altars representing the core tenets of Voss society: life, death, and duty. Gaden-Ko paused to meditate at each altar, thereby completing his transformation into a fully realized Mystic. Gaden-Ko and the Barsen'thor returned to Voss-Ka, where they consulted with the ThreeSonn-Vi, Gunt,a-Mer and Nen-Ji—who informed the Jedi that Gaden-Ko's vision had been interpreted as a directive for him to accompany the Barsen'thor. Alongside Gaden-Ko, a retinue comprising three vision interpreters, seven healers, and sixty Voss commandos under the leadership of Jenar-Sei joined the Jedi Master's crew, traveling aboard other ships belonging to the Rift Alliance. Gaden-Ko also advocated for the Republic before the Three, urging them to consider forming an alliance between the Voss and the galactic government.

Imperial Intelligence activities

Cipher Nine is met by the Three

Agent Cipher Nine of Imperial Intelligence journeyed to Voss as part of their Hunt for the Star Cabal. There, they met with Bas-Ton, an Imperial agent who had undergone surgical alterations to resemble a Voss, enabling him to infiltrate the reclusive society. Upon learning of Albathius and suspecting his involvement with the Star Cabal, Cipher Nine visited his tomb beneath Voss-Ka. Opening the Shining Man's sarcophagus, they discovered his ashes and a scroll containing his prophecy. The agent discerned that the Shining Man had visited the Wellspring of Healing within the Shrine of Healing and followed Albathius's path, uncovering evidence that a recording of the Shining Man's visit to the Wellspring of Healing existed within a vitalicron. Cipher Nine unlocked the genetically secured vitalicron using a genetic sample extracted from the ashes collected from the sarcophagus. Playing the recording, they learned that the Shining Man had purportedly forged the scroll using ancient materials from the Nightmare Lands and had used it to deceive a Voss Mystic. Cipher Nine then ventured into the Nightmare Lands and to the Chamber of Ashes, where they encountered the Shining Man's ship, guarded by a Gormak named Xanar. The Gormak refused to accept the Shining Man's death and attacked the agent when Cipher Nine attempted to retrieve the ship's computer. After killing the Gormak and securing the data, the agent was granted an audience with the Three. They revealed that the Shining Man had exploited his fabricated prophecy to persuade the Voss to maintain neutrality on behalf of the Star Cabal.

The Eternal Empire

Eternal Fleet warships above Voss.

In 3636 BBY, the galaxy was invaded by the Eternal Empire originating from Zakuul. After conquering both the Republic and the Sith Empire within a single year, Eternal Emperor Arcann deployed numerous massive battle stations, known as Star Fortresses, into orbit around subjugated planets to monitor for potential rebellions. The Voss Star Fortress was under the command of Exarch Andur Melor and was shielded by a shield bunker situated in the Pelath-Ri Marches. The Gormak viewed the Star Fortress as the origin of a disease affecting their young, elderly, and infirm. Confronted with a greater threat, Voss and Gormak soldiers united to defend their homeworld, ending the centuries-long conflict between the two species. Their alliance proved surprisingly effective, with the Voss's meditative composure complementing the Gormak's ferocious strength to create a formidable army.

Eternal Empire forces land in Voss-Ka.

In 3631 BBY, a Gormak warrior named Rokuss partnered with the Commander of the Alliance opposing Zakuul to dismantle the Star Fortress. Together, they assembled a strike team that assaulted and destroyed the shield bunker protecting the Star Fortress before regrouping at the Alliance base on Odessen. From there, the Commander infiltrated the Voss Star Fortress and reached the Sun Generator room, where they disabled the safety mechanisms of the Sun Generator and killed Andur Melor. The Commander escaped aboard a shuttle, while the Sun Generator overloaded, vaporizing the entire Star Fortress. In gratitude for liberating their world from the Star Fortress, Rokuss and his warriors joined the Alliance, where the Voss Mystic Sana-Rae already held a prominent position, overseeing the training of Force-sensitives.

The following year, the Alliance defeated Arcann at the Battle of Odessen. His mother, Senya Tirall, rescued her injured son and fled into hyperspace hoping to redeem him. In Arcann's absence, his sister Vaylin seized the Eternal Throne and placed a bounty on her mother. Senya brought Arcann to the Shrine of Healing on Voss, hoping to heal him using the Voss healing ritual. Having tracked her mother to Voss, Vaylin launched an invasion with the intent of hunting down her family. At this time, Alliance operatives Theron Shan and Sana-Rae were already on the planet and alerted the Alliance about the attack, prompting the Alliance Commander to mobilize the fleet in response. The Eternal Empire began deploying ground forces to Voss-Ka, and the Eternal Fleet opened fire, causing buildings to collapse and fires to erupt throughout the capital. Theron Shan attempted to rally Voss commandos to the defense, but their forces were overwhelmed, and he led a group to seek shelter in the Tower of Prophecy.

The Alliance fleet emerged from hyperspace and engaged the Eternal Fleet. Meanwhile, a stolen Zakuulan shuttle allowed the Alliance Commander, Lana Beniko, and Torian Cadera with a contingent of Mandalorian commandos to bypass the Eternal Fleet blockade and land in Voss-Ka. From the Republic District, the Alliance and Mandalorian forces engaged Knights of Zakuul and skytroopers, while the Eternal Fleet bombardment completely destroyed the Imperial District plateau. The Commander and Lana met Theron at the Tower of Prophecy, where they received a distress call from Senya, who pleaded with the Alliance for assistance, promising that Arcann would join their fight if healed. The Commander instructed Lana to lead the Mandalorian forces toward the Shrine, while Theron and the Commander traversed the Old Paths leading to the Shrine in the Storm Rider walker.

Senya Tirall urgsed the Voss to take her life force and save her son.

Inside the Shrine, they encountered Senya, who pleaded for her son's life. However, Vaylin ordered the Eternal Fleet to bombard the Shrine in an attempt to kill them all. Senya asked the Commander to hold off Zakuulan forces to allow the healing ritual to be completed, and rushed to her son after they agreed. Senya single-handedly defeated a host of Zakuulan Knights, but as her position was about to be overwhelmed, she ordered the Voss Mystics to take her strength to heal her son. The Mystics complied and transferred her strength to Arcann, healing his injuries and mending his broken spirit, though this act left Senya comatose. Arcann awoke confused and, witnessing his mother's lifeless body, fled to his shuttle and escaped into hyperspace.

At this point, Vaylin ordered the Eternal Fleet to annihilate her entire family, regardless of casualties on Voss. Just as all hope seemed lost, the tide of the battle turned with the arrival of the Imperial Fleet, led by Sith Empress Darth Acina. Harrower-class dreadnoughts opened fire on the Eternal Fleet warships, destroying several of them and prompting the rest to flee in self-preservation. Although Voss was spared the full destructive power of the Eternal Throne, it suffered significant losses, with much of the planet devastated and thousands of Voss and Gormak killed.

Imperial Era

By the time of the Republic's demise, Voss was known only as an unremarkable mining planet. During the early years of the Galactic Empire, the planet became part of the newly formed Allied Tion sector. The Empire attempted to establish industries on the planet to rival Lianna, but the planet fell under the control of corrupt Tionese clans who resisted these efforts. During this time, both the Voss and Gormak species were slowly dwindling towards extinction. Moreover, the Voss Mystics no longer held sway over the Voss but were marginalized by society and relegated to the Nightmare Lands. The Imperial Inquisition intended to recruit the Mystics, but would eliminate them if they refused to cooperate, as they were deemed too dangerous to be left unchecked. The mother of Imperial fighter pilot Harme Kiela hailed from a wealthy industrialist family on the planet.

Locations

Voss-Ka

Voss-Ka

The primary settlement of the Voss species was Voss-Ka, a fortified location spread across multiple mountain peaks and connected by bridges. The Judicial Quarter was situated on the eastern side, featuring Seeker's Hill, atop which stood the Tower of Prophecy, from which the Three governed the Voss. Following Voss's rediscovery and subsequent visits by offworlders, the Voss chose to restrict these "Outsiders" from entering Voss-Ka proper. Instead, they established a dedicated Alien Enclave for them on the western side, which housed the Alien Enclave Market and the Ambassador Commons, containing both Republic and Imperial Embassy. Because all Voss unquestioningly obeyed the Three, crime was virtually nonexistent in Voss-Ka. However, the presence of outsiders necessitated the creation of Adjudicators specifically to regulate the actions of the outsiders, with dangerous offenders forced to take the Step of Harmony off the mountain and into the gorge below.

Gormak Lands

The Gorma-Koss

South of Voss-Ka lay the Gormak Lands, a region dominated by the Gormak, where they established Gorma-Koss. This was a massive settlement for thousands of Gormak who had united their tribes into a sprawling expanse of huts, tents, high-tech defenses, and advanced technology. Within Gorma-Koss, the Gormak constructed a Gormak cannon to threaten Voss-Ka and a starship named Gormegan-1, which they intended to use for interstellar travel. These constructions were supported by the Tela Mining Operations, while the Gormak King Jokull stored treasures and trophies from his conquests in the underground vault known as the King's Hall. Voss commandos maintained surveillance over Gorma-Koss from outposts at Koss Overlook, Camp Talanis, and Outpost Skyline.

Old Paths

The Pilgrimage Path

West of Voss-Ka was the region known as the Old Paths, where a Road to Renewal led to Serenity Valley and the Shrine of Healing. This was an ancient Shrine of Voss Mystics and the only notable Voss presence outside of Voss-Ka. The Beastmark Hills in the south marked the boundary of the Flamewood, which terminated at the Russet Slopes to the east, where a Ruined City stood, containing remnants of Jedi presence on Voss. A network of caves permeated the region, including the Houk Syndicate Lair, the Mind healer's grove, and the Minev-Ra Caves.

Pelath-Ri Marches

Fest Otur Island

North of Voss-Ka were the Pelath-Ri Marches, an area that was formerly submerged until the Voss constructed the Err-Ka Dam on the northeastern edge to contain the floodwaters. The Crossing Woods covered the Pel-Ki Ridge and the Hills of the Ancients. When the Gormak invaded the region, they settled on Fest Otur Island and began to fell many of the trees and construct monolithic structures, resulting in the Clear-Cut Forest and the Barrenwoods. The Voss commandos maintained Kri-Ta Outpost, Outpost Overseer, and Pelath Point in the area.

Nightmare Lands

The Dark Heart

The Nightmare Lands east of Voss-Ka were inhabited by deranged travelers and twisted creatures, corrupted by the influence of Sel-Makor. Tainted wildlife roamed the Twisted Forest and the Crafted Blight. A Defiled Brook flowed from the Deepest Woods to the Sha-Thes Meadow, and the Lake of the Unseen provided a means for Voss Mystics to access the Spirit World. At the heart of the Nightmare Lands stood the Dark Heart, a complex labyrinth of chambers, some sealed while others broken from within, and an extensive network of underground corridors that served as the center of Sel-Makor's power.

Behind the scenes

Voss with its big ringed moon in the sky

Voss, briefly mentioned in the "Unusual Suspects" article published in Star Wars Gamer 6 in 2001, received no further attention until 2009, when it was included in the Appendix of The Essential Atlas and received additional details for the first time in the online article Xim Week: The History of Xim and the Tion Cluster. Voss was featured as a key planet in Star Wars: The Old Republic, which significantly expanded upon its history, culture, inhabitants, and fauna. As the penultimate planet visited during the class story, Voss features a unique storyline for each of the eight classes, in addition to separate planetary story arcs for both Imperial and Republic factions, as well as a multitude of standalone missions. Additional content related to Voss was later introduced through the Bounty Contract Week event, the Gree event, the Macrobinoculars missions, and the Seeker Droid missions. Voss was revisited in the Knights of the Fallen Empire and Knights of the Eternal Throne expansions, the latter of which opens with a chapter set entirely on Voss during an assault by the Eternal Empire.
