Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords serves as the follow-up to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, a title celebrated for its substantial commercial and critical triumph. It's important to note that the original game was crafted by BioWare, a different development team. Game producers have indicated that BioWare's involvement with other projects, such as Jade Empire and Dragon Age, was the primary reason for this shift. BioWare reportedly suggested Obsidian Entertainment as a suitable alternative, given their prior collaborative experiences with many of Obsidian's core members during their tenure at the now-defunct Black Isle Studios. The Sith Lords was built upon an enhanced iteration of the Knights of the Old Republic Odyssey engine, which Obsidian secured from BioWare.

Departing Peragus

Peragus II.

In the year 3951 BBY, set four years following the conclusion of the Jedi Civil War, Revan's vessel, the Ebon Hawk, appears severely damaged within the Peragus system, carrying six individuals: Revan's two droids (T3-M4 and a non-functional HK-47), two additional droids (3C-FD and an HK-50 assassin droid), and two unconscious individuals of Human descent (Meetra Surik and Kreia). With assistance from 3C-FD, T3-M4 successfully docks the ship at the Peragus Mining Facility, where Surik is placed within a kolto tank located in the medical bay, while Kreia, presumed deceased, is taken to the morgue.

After awakening, Surik encounters Kreia, who also regains consciousness. Exploring the surroundings, Surik discovers a smuggler named Atton Rand, whom she liberates from a force cage. The trio appears to be the only survivors within the facility, which is littered with the corpses of miners and overrun by assault-programmed mining droids engaged in "mining" organic matter. Surik eventually discovers that the HK-50 assassin droid is pursuing her due to a bounty placed by the Exchange on living Jedi following the collapse of the Jedi Order. The HK-50 assassin droid, claiming responsibility for the facility's deaths and destruction, attempts to prevent Surik's departure but is ultimately destroyed by her.

Concurrently, another ship, the Harbinger, arrives at Peragus. This Republic capital ship was transporting Surik to Telos IV before the incident at Peragus. Upon Surik, Kreia, and Rand boarding the Harbinger in an attempt to escape Peragus, they find the ship has been seized by the Sith under the command of Darth Sion. As Kreia confronts the Sith Lord to divert his attention, Surik and Rand flee through one of the ship's fuel lines.

During this encounter, Sion severs Kreia's hand with his lightsaber. Surik experiences Kreia's pain through the Force, revealing a newly formed Force bond between them. Surik and Rand proceed, meeting up with T3-M4, who had been previously disabled by the HK-50 assassin droid. Reaching the hangar bay, they board the Ebon Hawk and fend off attacks from Sith troopers. Kreia, having escaped Sion, joins them on board. As they navigate an asteroid field surrounding Peragus II, the Harbinger fires at the Ebon Hawk but misses, striking an asteroid and triggering a chain of explosions that obliterate the mining facility, asteroid field, and the entire Peragus system.

Finding Sanctuary on Telos

Telos Citadel Station.

Utilizing astrogation charts recovered from the Harbinger, Surik and her companions journey to Citadel Station, a space station orbiting the war-torn Telos system. Upon arrival, they are immediately disarmed and detained by the Telos Security Force under Lieutenant Dol Grenn for their suspected involvement in the destruction of Peragus, which was a crucial fuel source for Citadel Station, essential for maintaining its orbit around Telos. During the investigation, a mysterious woman steals the Ebon Hawk with T3-M4 aboard.

Chodo Habat, the leader of the Ithorian herd overseeing the Republic restoration efforts on Telos, offers to assist Surik in restoring her connection to the Force in exchange for resolving a conflict with their rival, Czerka Corporation. Despite Kreia's disapproval, Surik accepts Habat's offer, protecting the Ithorians' interests from Czerka and the Exchange. In return, the Ithorians provide her with a shuttle to reach the surface of Telos IV.

The surface of Telos IV, undergoing restoration after the Sith bombardment.

While en route to the restoration zone, their shuttle is downed by a Czerka air defense turret. Surik and her companions crash-land near the Zabrak mechanic Bao-Dur, who served under Surik during the Mandalorian Wars. He has been assisting the Ithorians in restoring Telos IV since the wars.

Bao-Dur joins Surik and her companions, leading them to an abandoned Republic military base. Along their path, they battle Czerka mercenaries and cannoks. Upon reaching the base, Bao-Dur identifies a breach in the planetary defense system in the polar regions as the likely location of the Ebon Hawk. Surik and her companions then board another shuttle from the base, heading towards the polar regions.

The Secret Academy

The Hidden Academy on Telos.

After being shot down by three HK-50 assassin droids, the shuttle crashes on a polar plateau. After eliminating the droids, Surik discovers a Jedi academy concealed beneath the plateau.

Upon entry, they are surrounded by the Handmaiden Sisters, who disarm and apprehend them. Surik is brought before Atris, one of the Jedi Masters who previously exiled her from the Jedi Order for disobeying the Jedi Council's directive to remain uninvolved in the Mandalorian Wars. Surik offers to aid Atris in addressing the new Sith threat and locating any surviving Jedi. Impressed by Surik's lack of resentment, Atris allows Surik to reclaim the Ebon Hawk and depart with her companions.

Gathering again on the Ebon Hawk, T3-M4 informs Surik that it has secretly downloaded a holorecord of her trial from Atris' archives. It is revealed that four Jedi Masters are in hiding: Zez-Kai Ell, Kavar, Vrook Lamar, and Lonna Vash. Surik decides to seek them out to discuss a strategy against the Sith and understand why she has lost her connection to the Force.

Nar Shaddaa

The Ebon Hawk on Nar Shaddaa.

Their initial destination is Nar Shaddaa, a moon of Nal Hutta. The moon's immense population and sprawling cityscape provide ample opportunities for concealment. In her efforts to locate Jedi Master Zez-Kai Ell, Surik actively antagonizes the Exchange by assisting refugees in the Refugee Sector who are being exploited by them. She and her companions also fend off Jedi-hunting bounty hunters and Red Eclipse slavers. At one point, Surik is ambushed by Visas Marr, a Miraluka assassin employed by the Sith Lord Darth Nihilus. After defeating Marr, Surik shows her compassion, leading Marr to pledge her allegiance to Surik.

After Surik is lured into a trap in the Jekk'Jekk Tarr and captured by the Exchange boss Goto, the bounty hunter Mira joins forces with Surik's companions to infiltrate Goto's yacht and rescue her. During their escape, Surik and her companions sabotage the yacht's cloaking device, revealing its location. Goto's rivals and Republic forces exploit this opportunity to attack and destroy the yacht, while Surik and her companions escape on the Ebon Hawk. Goto seemingly survives and instructs his droid, G0-T0, to join Surik's team. Surik later infers that "Goto" is actually a hologram created by G0-T0 to conceal its true identity as a Republic planning droid that has become rogue.

Upon returning to Nar Shaddaa, Surik encounters Zez-Kai Ell, who answers her questions and imparts a new lightsaber form or Force power. He also agrees to await her at the former Jedi Enclave on Dantooine while Surik continues her search for the other Jedi Masters.

Dxun

After departing Nar Shaddaa, Surik seeks Jedi Master Kavar on Onderon. As the Ebon Hawk enters the Onderon system and joins the long queue into the starport on Onderon's capital Iziz, Onderon starfighters under Colonel Tobin open fire at the Ebon Hawk and start a space battle above Iziz. The Ebon Hawk suffers heavy damage during the battle and is forced to land on Dxun, one of Onderon's moons.

While exploring Dxun in search of a way out, Surik discovers a covert Mandalorian camp deep in the jungle and encounters Canderous Ordo, who has claimed the title of Mandalore and currently seeks to unite the scattered Mandalorian clans under his leadership. Ordo promises to provide Surik passage to Iziz if she impresses him and his Mandalorian followers. After performing a number of feats, Surik gains the Mandalorians' trust and respect. Just as Surik is about to leave for Iziz with Ordo on his personal shuttle, the camp comes under attack by Sith assassins, who are swiftly dealt with by Surik and the Mandalorians.

Iziz

The walled city of Iziz.

Upon arriving in Iziz, Surik learns of an ongoing political crisis in the capital. General Vaklu has declared martial law and is seeking support for a coup against his cousin, Queen Talia. Many are also advocating for Onderon to secede from the Republic. The Onderon armed forces have divided into factions, with one supporting Vaklu and the other remaining loyal to the Queen. Amidst this unrest, Surik locates Ordo's contact in Iziz, Dhagon Ghent, and discovers that he has been arrested as a suspect in the murder of Captain Sullio. After Surik helps Ghent clear his name, he arranges for her to meet Jedi Master Kavar, who has been secretly advising the Queen.

Surik and Kavar's meeting at the cantina is interrupted when Colonel Tobin and his soldiers arrive to capture Kavar. Before fleeing, Kavar uses Force Stasis to stun Tobin's soldiers and informs Surik that he will contact her later. While Tobin pursues the Jedi Master, Surik and her companions escape Iziz, battling Vaklu's forces who attempt to kill them.

Dantooine

Dantooine Enclave Sublevel.

Surik leaves Dxun on the repaired Ebon Hawk and travels to the grassland planet of Dantooine, which is still recovering from the Sith attack during the Jedi Civil War. The surviving populace have established Khoonda, a makeshift government based in the former Matale residence, under the leadership of their Administrator, Terena Adare. Due to the damage caused by the Jedi Civil War, many people on Dantooine are suspicious and distrustful of the Jedi, or simply any lightsaber-wielding person.

Concealing her Jedi identity, Surik interacts with the local settlers and hears rumors that Adare had met a Jedi. Adare later reveals to Surik that she is in contact with Jedi Master Vrook Lamar because she needs his help to protect the settlers; the Khoonda Militia is too small and weak to resist aggression from a group of mercenaries. Adare also grants Surik permission to search the ruins of the Jedi Enclave.

After fighting several laigreks in the Enclave sublevel, Surik encounters Mical, a former Jedi Initiate whose training had been disrupted by the Mandalorian Wars. Now a historian and soldier in the service of the Republic, Mical has been sent by Admiral Carth Onasi to protect any Jedi artifacts he can find in the ruins. Mical becomes one of Surik's companions. Surik discovers a datapad in the library which shows that Lamar has been captured by the mercenaries and is being held captive in the crystal cave.

Surik goes to the cave and tries to save Lamar by fighting the mercenaries, but the Jedi Master reprimands her for acting on impulse. It turns out that he had deliberately allowed himself to be captured so that he can find out how the mercenaries are planning to attack Khoonda; Surik's "rescue" had complicated matters. Just as Surik exits the cave, she meets Azkul, the mercenary leader, who asks her to help them in conquering Khoonda. Surik refuses and fights her way back to Khoonda.

At Khoonda, Surik strengthens the stronghold's defenses by activating droids and security systems, as well as recruiting more people to join the Khoonda Militia, in preparation for an impending attack by the mercenaries. The Battle of Khoonda ultimately ends with the settlers' victory. After the battle, Lamar answers Surik's questions and teaches her a new lightsaber form or new Force power. Through her courageous deeds, Surik not only gains the gratitude of the people of Dantooine, but also restores their faith in the Jedi.

Return to Dxun

After Surik leaves Dantooine, she receives word from the Mandalorians on Dxun that Jedi Master Kavar has made contact and wants her to meet him in Iziz. On the same day, General Vaklu denounces Queen Talia as a traitor and declares war against her. Thus begins the Onderon Civil War.

The Sith, who have joined the civil war on Vaklu's side, are using the tomb of Freedon Nadd on Dxun as their base of operations. Surik's companions join forces with the Mandalorians to launch an attack on the Sith at the tomb and manage to defeat them.

Return to Iziz

In the meantime, Surik flies on a salvaged Basilisk war droid into Iziz and participates in the civil war. With support from forces loyal to Queen Talia, she fights her way up the Sky Ramp and into the Royal Palace. In the palace, she teams up with Kavar and the loyalists to defeat Vaklu's forces and their Sith allies. In the throne room, Surik assists Queen Talia in a duel against Vaklu and defeats him; Vaklu is captured and his fate will be decided by the Queen. This marks the end of the civil war.

After the battle, Kavar answers Surik's questions and teaches her a new lightsaber form or new Force power. Then, he leaves for the former Jedi Enclave on Dantooine, where all the missing Jedi Masters are to be reunited. In the meantime, Kreia secretly revives Colonel Tobin, who has been knocked unconscious during the battle, and orders him to deliver a message to Darth Nihilus to go to Telos IV.

Korriban

Surik's final stop during her search for the missing Jedi Masters is the Sith homeworld of Korriban. While exploring the ruins of the Sith Academy at the Valley of the Dark Lords, Surik finds the dead body of the last missing Jedi Master, Lonna Vash. She also encounters Darth Sion, and briefly duels him until Kreia telepathically advises her to escape. Surik then explores the shyrack cave and enters the tomb of Ludo Kressh. In the tomb, she experiences visions of her past, her companions and Revan, and gains a deeper understanding of the Force.

Eyes of the Exile

Throughout her journey across the galaxy, Surik regains her connection to the Force and, under Kreia's guidance, starts her journey toward becoming a Jedi Master. She also learns much about her companions' backstories. After discovering that Rand, Bao-Dur, Mira, and Mical are Force-sensitive, she trains them to eventually form a new generation of Jedi, whom Kreia refers to as the Lost Jedi—the true Jedi—disciples of Surik who will later form the basis of a new Jedi Order. Surik also learns from Kreia that Revan was Kreia's Padawan at one point in time, and that he has gone to the Unknown Regions to counter an unseen threat from beyond the Outer Rim.

When the three surviving Jedi Masters—Zez-Kai Ell, Kavar, and Vrook—finally gather at the rebuilt Jedi Enclave on Dantooine, Surik learns from them that the Jedi Council did not cut off her connection to the Force. In fact, she did so herself when she created a wound in the Force by activating the Mass Shadow Generator during the Battle of Malachor V; the trauma of sensing so many deaths through the Force caused her to instinctively sever her connection to the Force.

After Surik fails to persuade the Jedi Masters to unite against the Sith, they explain that the new Sith threat, in the form of Darth Nihilus, had caught them off guard. As Nihilus feeds on the Force, he causes widespread death and destruction to worlds which have a strong connection to the Force. That was what happened during the Jedi conclave at Katarr when Nihilus showed up and destroyed all the the Jedi who were present, along with the Force-sensitive Miraluka species by draining the Force from the planet, although the Miraluka Visas Marr survived.

The Jedi Masters conclude that Surik has regained her connection to the Force by feeding on the life energy of her companions through her ability to form Force bonds with them. As they are worried that the Exile will, through the Force, lead the Sith to them and eventually cause the death of the Force, they want to strip her of her connection to the Force against her will.

At that moment, Kreia appears, berates the Jedi Masters for their arrogance and ignorance, and uses an extreme form of Force drain to make them undergo the same loss Surik felt at Malachor V. Unable to live without the Force, the three Jedi Masters die almost immediately. Although Surik retains her connection to the Force, she becomes unconscious. In the meantime, the Handmaiden Sisters dash into the Enclave and take Kreia prisoner before delivering her to their mistress, Atris.

Admission of Atris

When Surik regains consciousness, she finds out from her companions about what had happened, and returns to the Jedi academy on Telos IV to find Kreia. She figures out that the Force bond between her and Kreia is lethal; this meant that if Kreia dies, Surik will die as well.

In the meantime, Kreia reveals to Atris that she has fallen to the dark side and become Darth Traya. The irony is that Atris, in her attempt to rebuild the Jedi Order and prevent any future Jedi from falling to the ways of the Sith, has been corrupted by her studies of the ways of the Sith. After Kreia exposes her, Atris fully embraces her persona of Darth Traya and admits her fall to darkness. Kreia then leaves.

Shortly after, Surik shows up to confront the fallen Jedi Master and defeats her. However, against Atris's expectations, Surik does not kill her and spares her life instead. Realizing that perhaps she can find her true self if she will simply let go of her flawed ideas about the Jedi, Atris awaits judgement at her sanctum of Sith holocrons within the Telos academy. She also tells Surik that the Sith are about to attack Telos, and that Kreia has left for Malachor V, where she will wait for the Exile to finish what she has begun there.

The Battle of Telos

The bridge of the Ravager

Upon arriving at Citadel Station, Surik discovers that the Sith attack is already underway. Surik and her allies, including the Telos Security Force and reinforcements from the Republic, Dantooine, and Onderon, engage the Sith in combat, successfully expelling the enemy forces from the station.

Subsequently, Surik joins forces with Marr, Ordo, and the Mandalorians to board an orbiting shuttle, with the aim of infiltrating Darth Nihilus' flagship, the Ravager. Once aboard, they strategically place proton charges throughout the vessel before proceeding to the bridge to confront the Sith Lord directly.

During their confrontation, Nihilus attempts to drain the Force from Surik, employing the same technique he used on other Jedi. However, this tactic backfires spectacularly. Instead of benefiting from Surik's connection to the Force, he is weakened by the lingering effects of the wound in the Force that she carries. With Marr's assistance in diverting the Sith Lord's attention, Surik ultimately triumphs over Nihilus, claiming his distinctive mask as a trophy. Surik and her companions then make their escape from the Ravager moments before it explodes. The remaining Sith forces are either routed or destroyed, effectively ending the conflict.

Following Surik's return to Citadel Station, Admiral Carth Onasi requests a private audience with her. During this meeting, he recounts the story of his first encounter with Revan and seeks her assistance in locating Revan in the Unknown Regions. After Surik departs, Onasi meets with Bastila Shan to discuss Revan's situation.

Exile of the echoes

The Trayus Core, part of the Trayus Academy and the location of the final confrontation between Meetra Surik and Kreia.

Surik and her allies journey to Malachor V, where the planet's ravaged state causes the Ebon Hawk to crash. Surik traverses the hostile terrain on foot, eventually reaching the Trayus Academy.

Within the Trayus Academy, Surik battles and defeats the Sith forces, culminating in a duel with Darth Sion. Despite the Sith Lord's capacity for regeneration, Surik persuades him to relinquish his pain and accept death willingly, thereby ending his immortality.

Subsequently, Surik confronts Kreia in the Trayus Core. Kreia rejects redemption and presents Surik with a grim choice: kill her to sever the echoes of Malachor V, or be killed and allow death to engulf the galaxy. Ultimately, Kreia is defeated by the Exile.

In her final moments, Kreia foresees the futures of Surik's companions, the planets they visited, the Mandalorians, and the Republic. She also reveals that Revan visited Malachor V both after the Mandalorian Wars and after the Jedi Civil War, discovering evidence of the "True Sith," whom he has gone to confront "in his own way."

Simultaneously, on the surface of Malachor V, Bao-Dur's remote activates the Mass Shadow Generator despite G0-T0's attempts to prevent it. As Malachor V collapses once more, the Ebon Hawk arrives just in time to rescue Surik, while Kreia falls to her death in the Trayus Core. Surik then departs for the Unknown Regions in search of Revan.

Key characters

This narrative is based on the canonical female light side playthrough of the game.

Meetra Surik

Meetra Surik

Meetra Surik, also known as the Jedi Exile, is the central character in Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. A decade prior to the game's events, Surik served as a Jedi General alongside Revan during the Mandalorian Wars. At the decisive Battle of Malachor V, she activated the Mass Shadow Generator, resulting in countless immediate deaths. Although this action ended the war, the overwhelming trauma of experiencing so much death through the Force led Surik to instinctively sever her connection to the Force, leading to her banishment from the Jedi Order. After a decade of wandering the galaxy's fringes, Surik becomes entangled in the conflict between the Republic and the Sith. Throughout her journey, she gathers companions, revitalizes the dwindling Jedi Order, and ultimately eliminates the Lords of the Sith Triumvirate, confronting the ghosts of her past and overcoming her inner struggles. She ultimately defeats Kreia in the Trayus Core on Malachor V, putting an end to the threat she posed.

Darth Sion

Darth Sion

Darth Sion, also known as the Lord of Pain, is a prominent member of the Sith Triumvirate and one of its three Sith Lords. Once a warrior under Exar Kun, he met his demise during the Great Sith War. However, he defied death by channeling his hatred through the Force, allowing him to resurrect himself each time he is defeated. This immortality comes at a steep price, as his wounds never fully heal, causing him constant agony. During the Jedi Civil War, Sion sided with the Sith against the Republic, forming the Sith Triumvirate alongside Darth Traya. He later betrayed Traya, believing she had become too weak, and initiated a five-year campaign to exterminate the Jedi. Upon Meetra Surik's return to the galaxy after a decade-long absence, Sion becomes fixated on hunting her down, though she manages to evade him in each encounter. Eventually, Surik confronts Sion in the Trayus Academy on Malachor V, where she defeats him and convinces him to abandon his hatred, accepting his death willingly, perhaps to finally end his suffering.

Darth Nihilus

Darth Nihilus

Darth Nihilus, also known as the Lord of Hunger, is a key member of the Sith Triumvirate and one of its three Sith Lords. His origins are largely unknown, save for the fact that he was a former Jedi who served under Revan during the Mandalorian Wars. He miraculously survived Meetra Surik's activation of the Mass Shadow Generator at the end of the Battle of Malachor V, though the experience left him deeply scarred. The immense strain of sensing so much death through the Force created an insatiable hunger for Force energy, which he sustained by draining the Force from anything he encountered on the desolate planet. This abuse of Force power led to the deterioration of his physical form, forcing him to confine his spirit within his mask and armor to survive. Darth Traya eventually discovered him and trained him and Darth Sion as her apprentices. The Sith Triumvirate then initiated a five-year galactic purge of the Jedi. Nihilus later assisted Sion in overthrowing Traya, subsequently distancing himself from Sion, causing widespread destruction, and taking on Visas Marr as his apprentice. Kreia, formerly Darth Traya, later lures Nihilus to Telos IV under the guise of Jedi presence, hoping he will consume them. He is drawn into a confrontation with Meetra Surik and a redeemed Marr aboard the Ravager, where they ultimately defeat him.

Kreia

Kreia

Kreia is an enigmatic elderly woman whom Meetra Surik encounters in the Peragus Mining Facility after evading Darth Sion and his Sith assassins. A powerful Force-sensitive individual, Kreia acts as Surik's mentor, guiding her as she works to restore order to the Republic and helping her reconnect with the Force. While her true motives remain unclear at first, Surik gradually uncovers Kreia's past as Revan's original master. She was held responsible for Revan's fall after the Mandalorian Wars and was banished from the Jedi Order as a result. Embracing the dark side, Kreia became Darth Traya, seized control of the remnants of Darth Revan's Sith Empire, and established the Sith Triumvirate. However, before she could exact her revenge on the Jedi, her two apprentices, Darth Sion and Darth Nihilus, betrayed her and severed her connection to the Force. Kreia then takes Surik as her new apprentice, recognizing her potential as a wound in the Force to diminish the influence of the Force's will on sentients, empowering individuals to break free from their dependence on the higher power and embrace their true selves. Her plan comes to fruition when Meetra Surik kills her in the Trayus Core on Malachor V, with the Jedi Exile severing her bond with Kreia and liberating herself from the lingering tragedy of Malachor V that had haunted her journey.

Atton Rand

Atton Rand

Atton Rand is a former Republic soldier who served under Revan during both the Mandalorian Wars and the Jedi Civil War. Following the wars, he became a smuggler. He was eventually captured and imprisoned in the Peragus Mining Facility until Meetra Surik frees him. After escaping Peragus aboard the Ebon Hawk, Rand travels with Surik as the ship's pilot. Over the course of their journey, Surik learns more about Rand's past, including his aversion to the Jedi and his experience in killing them. She also discovers that Rand possesses Force sensitivity and decides to train him as a Jedi Sentinel.

Bao-Dur

Bao-Dur

Bao-Dur is a Zabrak mechanical expert hailing from Iridonia. He served under Meetra Surik during the Mandalorian Wars and was responsible for the creation of the Mass Shadow Generator used during the Battle of Malachor V. He carries a heavy burden of guilt and shame for the countless deaths caused by the device's activation, both on the planet's surface and in the orbiting fleets.

After the war, Bao-Dur sought to redeem himself by using his skills to help others, leading him to participate in the Republic-sponsored Restoration Project on Telos IV. He encounters Surik again when her ship crash-lands near a Restoration Zone, and he decides to accompany her on her journey across the galaxy. During their travels, Surik discovers that Bao-Dur is Force-sensitive and trains him to become a Jedi Guardian.

Bao-Dur has replaced his left arm with an energy-arm that allows him to bypass force shields and inflict greater damage. He is also accompanied by a small, spherical remote droid which aids him in repairs.

Mical (Disciple)

Mical

Mical, also known as Disciple, is a Force-sensitive Human who received brief training as a Jedi youngling at the Jedi Enclave on Dantooine. However, his training was cut short due to the collapse of the Jedi Order following the Mandalorian Wars and [Jedi Civil War](/article/jedi_civil_war]. Seeking to preserve the Jedi's legacy, he became a historian and soldier in the service of the Republic, while also acquiring some medical skills.

While exploring the ruins of the Jedi Enclave on Dantooine, Mical encounters Meetra Surik, who is searching for the surviving Jedi Masters. He offers his knowledge and skills to assist her and joins her on her journey. Although initially hesitant to reveal his past, he eventually shares his Jedi training and recounts how he met her during his childhood. He accepts her offer to resume his training and becomes a Jedi Consular.

Visas Marr

Visas Marr

Visas Marr is a Miraluka, a race of Force-sensitives who "see" through the Force, compensating for their blindness. During the Dark Wars, the Jedi Order attempted to hold a meeting on Katarr (Marr's homeworld), hoping that the Miralukas' strong Force sensitivity would mask their presence. However, Darth Nihilus disrupted the meeting, using his Force drain to eradicate all life on Katarr. Marr, the sole survivor, was captured by Nihilus and forced to become his apprentice.

As Meetra Surik strengthens her connection to the Force, Nihilus senses her growing power and dispatches Marr to assassinate her. Marr ambushes Surik on the Ebon Hawk, but Surik defeats her and spares her life. Impressed by Surik's abilities and her perceived destiny, Marr renounces the dark side and pledges her loyalty to Surik.

Mira

Mira

Mira is a Human female who was raised and trained by the Mandalorians, who destroyed her home and enslaved her during the Mandalorian Wars. She lost her adopted family when the Mass Shadow Generator was activated during the Battle of Malachor V. After the battle, she ended up on Nar Shaddaa, where she became a bounty hunter. During this time, she became embroiled in a conflict with the Wookiee bounty hunter Hanharr, who relentlessly pursues her.

Upon Meetra Surik's arrival on Nar Shaddaa, Jedi Master Zez-Kai Ell secretly hires Mira to protect Surik from other bounty hunters seeking to claim Goto's bounty on Jedi. When Visquis, the local Exchange boss, attempts to lure Surik into a trap, Mira knocks out Surik and takes her place. However, she is captured by Visquis and forced to fight Hanharr in the arena. She defeats Hanharr and leaves him for dead before escaping. She subsequently joins Surik's companions in rescuing Surik from G0-T0's yacht and accompanies Surik on her quest. Surik later discovers Mira's Force sensitivity and trains her as a Jedi Sentinel.

G0-T0 (Goto)

G0-T0

G0-T0 is a planning droid created by the Aratech Repulsor Company to aid in the Republic's reconstruction following the Jedi Civil War. Over time, the droid found itself unable to simultaneously fulfill both of its directives: rebuild the Republic and adhere to all Republic laws. Consequently, it prioritized the former and established a smuggling operation on Nar Shaddaa, posing as a proxy for a fictitious individual named Goto, who exists only in holograms.

G0-T0 placed a bounty on living Jedi, hoping to enlist their help in rebuilding and stabilizing the Republic. However, the bounty hunters misinterpreted G0-T0's intentions and simply killed Jedi. G0-T0 also reactivated a hidden HK Manufacturing Plant on Telos IV, which began producing HK-50 series assassin droids to hunt down and eliminate Jedi.

When Meetra Surik arrives on Nar Shaddaa, she is captured and taken aboard G0-T0's yacht, where the droid reveals its plans for the Republic and seeks her assistance. After Surik escapes, G0-T0 presents itself on the Ebon Hawk as "Goto's gift" and insists on accompanying Surik and overseeing her efforts to stabilize Telos, Dantooine, and Onderon. Surik later deduces that "Goto" is, in fact, a droid masquerading as a person.

T3-M4

T3-M4

T3-M4 is a utility droid that accompanied Revan on his quest to find the Star Forge. Following the Battle of Rakata Prime, Revan departed for the Unknown Regions and instructed T3-M4 to seek assistance from any Jedi should they lose contact.

Five years later, T3-M4 discovers an injured Meetra Surik aboard the heavily damaged Ebon Hawk. It manages to repair and navigate the ship to the nearby Peragus Mining Facility. After Surik awakens in the medical bay, T3-M4 helps her gain access to the fuel depot before it is attacked and disabled by a HK-50 assassin droid. Surik rescues T3-M4, and they escape from Peragus together just before the system is destroyed. Since then, T3-M4 has remained a part of Surik's team, accompanying her on her journey across the galaxy.

HK-47

HK-47

HK-47 is an assassin droid created by Revan after the Battle of Malachor V to eliminate his rivals. The droid was damaged and captured on a mission shortly before Revan was captured and rehabilitated by the Jedi Order. HK-47 was reunited with its master on Tatooine and accompanied him on his search for the Star Forge.

Some time after Revan left for the Unknown Regions, HK-47 was damaged and left aboard the Ebon Hawk, which eventually came into the possession of Meetra Surik and her companions. Surik repairs HK-47, who recognizes her as its new master and follows her throughout the galaxy.

Canderous Ordo (Mandalore)

Canderous Ordo as Mandalore

Canderous Ordo, also known as Mandalore, is a Mandalorian warrior who fought against the Republic in the Mandalorian Wars. He later joined a redeemed Revan on his quest for the Star Forge and participated in the Battle of Rakata Prime against Darth Malak.

After the [Jedi Civil War](/article/jedi_civil_war], Ordo claimed the title of Mandalore (leader of the Mandalorians) with Revan's assistance. He established his base on the forest moon of Dxun and began the process of reuniting the scattered Mandalorian clans and rebuilding Mandalorian power.

When Meetra Surik is forced to land on Dxun en route to Onderon, she encounters the Mandalorian base and meets Mandalore. Mandalore promises to help her secure passage to Iziz if she proves herself worthy. Surik impresses the Mandalorians through her accomplishments on Dxun and earns their respect. In return, Mandalore honors his word and accompanies her to Iziz to find Jedi Master Kavar. Afterward, he decides to join Surik on her quest to reunite the surviving Jedi and defeat the Sith.

Brianna (Handmaiden)

Brianna (Handmaiden)

Brianna, alternatively called Handmaiden, is a female of Human and Echani descent. She functioned as a handmaiden for the Jedi Master Atris at the hidden Jedi academy situated on Telos IV. She has five Echani half-sisters, who are also employed as handmaidens by Atris.

Upon Meetra Surik's arrival at Citadel Station, Atris dispatches Handmaiden with the intention of seizing the Ebon Hawk and drawing Surik to the academy. When Surik appears, she successfully sways Atris to participate in the struggle against the Sith and to locate the remaining Jedi Masters. Before Surik's departure, Handmaiden engages her in conversation, revealing her fascination with the Jedi's practices.

Should the player designate Surik as male, Handmaiden will secretly board the Ebon Hawk and accompany him on his journey. With sufficient influence established, the player has the option to train Handmaiden to become a Jedi Guardian.

Hanharr

Hanharr

Hanharr is a male Wookiee hailing from Kashyyyk. Known for his merciless hunting skills and sociopathic tendencies, he brutally murdered his entire village, convinced that this action would prevent their enslavement by the Czerka Corporation. He eventually found himself on Nar Shaddaa, where he pursued a career as a bounty hunter. He also became embroiled in a conflict with Mira.

When Meetra Surik appears on Nar Shaddaa, unknowingly heading into a trap orchestrated by Visquis, the local Exchange leader, Mira intervenes by incapacitating Surik and taking her place. Visquis apprehends Mira and compels her to engage Hanharr in combat within the arena. Mira emerges victorious, leaving Hanharr seemingly dead. However, Kreia secretly revives Hanharr and manipulates him to serve her purposes. His final appearance occurs on Malachor V, where he once again confronts Mira, ultimately meeting his demise at her hands (though she has the option to spare him).

If the player chooses to play Surik as a character aligned with the dark side, Hanharr will eliminate Mira and join Surik's group.

Atris

Atris

Atris was a Jedi Master who held a position on the Jedi Council during both the Mandalorian Wars and the Jedi Civil War. She was deeply devoted to the tenets of the Jedi Code and felt a sense of betrayal when Meetra Surik disobeyed the Council's directives by joining Revan in the Mandalorian Wars. Upon Surik's return following the Battle of Malachor V to face the Council's judgment, Atris was the first to denounce her and advocate for her exile.

During the Dark Wars, Atris summoned the Jedi to attend a secret meeting on Katarr. She then intentionally leaked information about the gathering, hoping to draw the Sith out of hiding. However, her scheme backfired when Darth Nihilus appeared and unleashed his Force drain ability, obliterating all life on Katarr—leaving only Visas Marr as a survivor.

Atris withdrew into isolation on Telos IV, where she founded a clandestine Jedi academy in the planet's polar regions and enlisted the Handmaiden Sisters to serve as her protectors. Gradually and unknowingly, she succumbed to the influence of the dark side as she immersed herself in the study of the Sith holocrons she had amassed, seeking to gain a deeper understanding of the Sith's methods, thereby betraying her own principles and essentially transforming into Darth Traya.

Upon Surik's arrival at Citadel Station, Atris dispatches Handmaiden to seize the Ebon Hawk and lure Surik to the academy. She holds Surik accountable for the destruction of Peragus, but later reluctantly agrees to accept Surik's assistance in defeating the Sith. She tasks Surik with locating the surviving Jedi Masters and reuniting them at the Jedi Enclave on Dantooine.

Development

The development phase of The Sith Lords commenced around the same time the original Knights of the Old Republic made its debut on the Xbox, precisely on July 15, 2003. From the project's inception, the creative team resolved to establish a significantly darker overall ambiance compared to Knights of the Old Republic, emphasizing the precarious situation of the Jedi. Chris Avellone, the lead designer, acknowledged the challenge of crafting a sequel to what he considered BioWare's remarkable narrative in the original Knights of the Old Republic, anticipating considerable pressure on the team. He initiated the process by identifying enjoyable gameplay elements and conceiving a story that would seamlessly integrate with them. Subsequently, he immersed himself in every Star Wars film, book, and comic book pertaining to the Expanded Universe, even enduring The Star Wars Holiday Special. He considered it crucial to grasp the scope of existing adventures, the boundaries of the EU, and which ill-conceived ideas to avoid. Only then did he feel prepared to contemplate the project's overarching vision.

The initial phase centered on distinguishing the character's, or the hero's, motivation from the player's motivation and charting the story's progression to harmonize the two. In The Sith Lords, the protagonist was portrayed as a disgraced veteran of the Mandalorian Wars, the last known Jedi in the galaxy, and a target of dark side assassins determined to eliminate all Jedi. Circumstances had severed the hero's connection to the Force, but the character was presented with an opportunity to gradually restore that connection and rediscover the essence of being a Jedi or Sith. The player's motivation involved providing compelling reasons to sustain engagement with the game and encouraging thorough exploration of the story and locations. This could be achieved, for instance, by unveiling crucial information, introducing a new companion, or granting access to novel special abilities. The prevailing sentiment was that each stage of the game should both pose and answer the question, "Why should the player care?"

The subsequent phase involved formulating pivotal story junctures and fleshing out the narrative to connect them. The objective was to introduce unexpected twists while providing sufficient foreshadowing to maintain player interest. Once the overarching story had been established, the game outline was distributed among the designers, who then proceeded to elaborate on the details of their respective storyline segments. The primary aim was to deliver a thrilling adventure, populated with diverse alien races and new worlds to explore. Furthermore, the development team sought to create a narrative that would prompt players to contemplate the ethical implications of using the Force for both benevolent and malevolent purposes, as well as the consequences of such actions.

In a June 2009 interview with Kotaku Australia, Chris Avellone disclosed that the "true Sith" were envisioned as remnants of Naga Sadow's Sith Empire, "orchestrating the collapse of the Republic from behind the scenes, interfering with key events to cause echoes through the Force and leave it ripe for invasion – hopefully without a shot even being fired."

On July 21st, 2015, more than a decade after the initial launch of The Sith Lords, Aspyr Media released a version of the game tailored for both Mac and Linux. Aspyr also incorporated several enhancements into the game, including:

  • A total of 37 Achievements compatible with both Steam and Game Center [13]
  • Compatibility with gamepads
  • Support for widescreen and native resolutions, encompassing Retina/4k/5k resolutions
  • Steam Cloud for saving game progress (Steam exclusive)
  • Steam Workshop integration (Steam exclusive)
  • A series of bug fixes.

These enhancements were subsequently extended to the PC Windows edition as well.

Continuity

Although the game permitted players to freely name their characters, The Old Republic: Revan—a novel penned by Drew Karpyshyn and released in November 2011—revealed her official name to be Meetra Surik, with an appearance that did not correspond to any of the available female character designs within the game.

Alternative stories

Should the player opt to embrace the dark side, they can cast Kreia into the core of Malachor V and ascend to the position of headmistress at Trayus Academy. Concurrently, G0-T0 dismantles Bao-Dur's remote and disables the Mass Shadow Generator, thereby preserving the planet's integrity.

Sequels

Both Obsidian and LucasArts have voiced their desire to further expand upon the franchise, with LucasArts representatives affirming their commitment to the Knights of the Old Republic series. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3 was under development but was ultimately cancelled around 2004 due to a challenging period for LucasArts. In March 2007, the announcement of a spin-off was officially made when "Aristotle," the proprietor of a Knights fan site, conducted interviews with several LucasArts staff members.

Later that year, Electronic Gaming Monthly reported in the rumors section of their May 2007 issue that BioWare had assembled an online team to work on a massively multiplayer online role-playing game rooted in the Knights of the Old Republic series. The game, Star Wars: The Old Republic, was formally unveiled in July 2008 by EA CEO John Riccitiello. It was ultimately released on December 20th, 2011, and garnered generally positive reviews from critics.

Legacy

Due to the adaptability of the game's Odyssey engine, The Sith Lords frequently serves as a subject for modding within the gaming community. Numerous modding groups have endeavored to recreate and reinstate missing or cut content discovered within the game's files.

Team Gizka's project was the pioneering effort of this kind, established in 2004 with the promise of restoring content and rescuing the cut M4-78 Droid planet. By early 2008, their project had entered the closed beta phase. Other modders, identified by the handles DarthStoney and Zbyl, developed a restoration mod inspired by Team Gizka, which achieved all of Team Gizka's initial objectives, including the restoration of the HK factory and various bug fixes. As of late 2010, the Team Gizka website had been discontinued.

Between 2009 and 2014, a comprehensive mod known as The Sith Lords Restored Content Mod underwent several releases, reinstating the majority of the cut content.
