Phantom

The Phantom, a modified version of the VCX-series auxiliary starfighter produced by the Corellian Engineering Corporation, served the Spectres throughout the Imperial Era and the early stages of the Galactic Civil War. This vessel could attach to the Ghost, its mothership. The Phantom was frequently utilized by the Ghost's crew, with Hera Syndulla or Kanan Jarrus typically at the controls, although Chopper or even the autopilot could pilot it. Before its destruction at Reklam Station, the Phantom played a crucial role in numerous missions against the Galactic Empire undertaken by the Spectres.

Description

Interior of the Phantom.

Integrated with the VCX-100 light freighter known as the Ghost, the Phantom was a specifically modified VCX-series auxiliary starfighter. Both the primary vessel and the auxiliary craft were products of the Corellian Engineering Corporation. The smaller vessel was armed with a Taim & Bak MS-2B twin laser cannon in addition to a Taim & Bak KX4 dorsal laser turret. Sourced from a previous raid, the Phantom featured a repurposed starfighter cockpit. At least four foldaway seats were fitted within, providing space for cargo. The Phantom also included a hatch that gave access to the Ghost's boarding ramp.

The Phantom was capable of performing the functions of both a starfighter and a shuttle, a capability that was fully exploited by its operators. On at least a couple of occasions, the Phantom was damaged, but it was always repaired back to full functionality. A jammer was also integrated into the Phantom's systems, allowing it to mask its presence. The rebel Sabine Wren adorned the Phantom's exterior with a painting of a Sando aqua monster. A Mon Calamari shipbuilder named Quarrie upgraded the Phantom by adding a hyperdrive. However, this enhancement required an astromech for proper operation. Furthermore, the Phantom's autopilot was programmed to automatically return to its mothership, a security measure designed to deter theft.

In its role as a secondary shuttle, the Phantom was larger, heavier, and less maneuverable than dedicated starfighters, such as the TIE/ln space superiority starfighter utilized by the Galactic Empire. This was balanced by its robustness, shielding, rear-facing weaponry, adaptability, and advanced avionics. Besides its use as a fighter and shuttle, its laser cannons allowed it to function as a rear gun turret for the Ghost when docked in reverse.

History

The Spectres

The Phantom, as the Ghost's auxiliary craft, belonged to Hera Syndulla, the Twi'lek pilot. Her crew consisted of Kanan Jarrus, a former Jedi Padawan; Chopper, an astromech droid; Garazeb Orrelios, a former Lasat Honor Guardsman; and Sabine Wren, a teenage Mandalorian weapons expert and artist. Chopper operated the Phantom's laser cannons during an attack on the mothership by TIE fighters during a raid on an Imperial convoy.

While attempting to steal Imperial supplies on Lothal, a planet in the Outer Rim, the rebels encountered Ezra Bridger, a Force-sensitive human boy, who hitched a ride on the Ghost. After escaping from his makeshift cell, Ezra took control of one of the Phantom's laser turrets before being relieved by Sabine. Still attached to its mothership, the Phantom participated in a mission to free Wookiee slaves being transported to the spice mines of Kessel. Following these events, Ezra decided to become Kanan's apprentice and join the Ghost's crew.

Further adventures

Later on, the Ghost's crew discovered that Luminara Unduli, a Jedi Master, was being held at the Spire, a high-security prison on Stygeon Prime. While Chopper stayed with the Ghost, the other rebels traveled to the Spire aboard the Phantom. Hera piloted the auxiliary shuttle, deploying Kanan, Ezra, Sabine, and Zeb onto a landing platform. While the others entered the prison, Hera connected the Phantom to the prison's exterior. To avoid detection, she shut down the auxiliary vessel and activated a jammer.

Hera's companions soon learned that Luminara had died and were trapped by the Grand Inquisitor and a number of stormtroopers. Meanwhile, the Phantom's sensors detected an approaching object. Hera initially believed it was a TIE fighter, but quickly realized it was a large swarm of tibidees that had mistaken the shuttle's jamming signal for a mating call. Hera quickly disconnected the shuttle from the prison, but was chased by the tibidees. Hera eventually managed to befriend the tibidees and used them to harass the Imperials while rescuing the other Spectres. They then returned to the Ghost and fled into space.

The Phantom and its mothership later participated in an operation to intercept an Imperial convoy transporting a large kyber crystal. Kanan piloted the Phantom while Hera flew the Ghost. The two rebels had learned about the convoy from Ezra, who had infiltrated Lothal's Academy for Young Imperials, and Zare Leonis, a cadet sympathetic to the rebels. While the Phantom distracted the convoy's TIE fighter escorts, the Ghost destroyed the Gozanti-class cruiser carrying the kyber crystal. This triggered a large explosion that annihilated the Imperial convoy. The Phantom barely escaped the explosion by linking up with the Ghost, which then jumped into hyperspace.

After a supply raid on Lothal, the Phantom was pursued by several TIE fighters, and its fuel line was damaged by a laser strike while navigating through a canyon. Following the mission, the Phantom and the Ghost docked, and Ezra, Chopper, and Zeb conducted a diagnostic scan, but failed to properly check it due to their arguing. The ruptured fuel line was discovered during a supply run to Fort Anaxes, an old Republic base on the asteroid PM-1203 that had been abandoned after the Clone Wars. Hera and Sabine were stranded on the asteroid, surrounded by hostile fyrnocks. Their mission proved successful despite some close calls with the beasts, thanks in part to explosive rhydonium canisters. Kanan, Ezra, Chopper, and Zeb arrived shortly after to rescue the two, and the Phantom was recovered as well.

Rising challenges

The Phantom approaching Fort Anaxes

After sabotaging the Empire Day celebrations in Lothal's Capital City, the rebels escaped into space aboard the Ghost, accompanied by Tseebo, a Rodian fugitive and former employee of the Imperial Information Office who possessed a cybernetic implant containing Imperial intelligence. During a brief dogfight, Chopper manned the Phantom's laser cannons but was incapacitated by a laser blast. Before the Imperials could cause further damage, Tseebo transmitted coordinates into the Ghost's hyperdrive, allowing the rebels to escape into hyperspace. However, the Grand Inquisitor managed to attach an XX-23 S-thread tracker to the auxiliary vessel's hull.

While traveling through hyperspace, Chopper detected the homing beacon on the Phantom's hull. To prevent the Empire from capturing Tseebo, Kanan and Ezra decided to use the Phantom as a decoy to draw the Inquisitor away from the Ghost. The Phantom exited hyperspace above the asteroid PM-1203 and landed at Fort Anaxes. There, Ezra used the Force to command the fyrnocks to attack the Grand Inquisitor and his stormtroopers. After evading the Inquisitor, Kanan and an exhausted Ezra escaped aboard the Phantom and rejoined the Ghost.

Because Ezra had accessed the Dark Side during his confrontation with the Inquisitor, Kanan decided that his Padawan should undertake his Jedi trials to determine if he possessed the necessary discipline to be a Jedi. While meditating with his Jedi holocron, Kanan discovered a Jedi Temple on Lothal. He used the Phantom to transport his apprentice there, landing the shuttle near the temple after Ezra sensed its presence. After Ezra passed his Jedi trials, he and Kanan returned to the Ghost via the Phantom.

The Phantom was also involved in a mission by the Ghost's crew to seize control of the Imperial Communications Center in Jalath and use it to broadcast Rebel counter-propaganda. Hera remained aboard the Phantom to provide a getaway transport while the other rebels took control of the facility. However, this was a trap orchestrated by Grand Moff Tarkin, the Grand Inquisitor, and Agent Kallus. Imperial forces quickly surrounded the communications tower. While Kanan held off the Imperials, the other rebels escaped aboard the Phantom. Despite Hera's objections, she followed Kanan's orders to leave him and escape.

Despite Kanan's capture, Ezra managed to broadcast a message before Grand Moff Tarkin destroyed the communications tower. Following Kanan's capture, Hera received orders from Fulcrum, the mysterious rebel leader, to sacrifice Kanan to avoid exposing the rebellion. However, Ezra, Sabine, Zeb, and Chopper defied Hera's orders and used the Phantom to visit Cikatro Vizago, a Devaronian crime lord. With Vizago's assistance, the rebels learned that Kanan was being held aboard Tarkin's flagship, the Sovereign, which was en route to the Mustafar system.

A wider rebellion

After Kanan's rescue, the Ghost's crew discovered they were part of a larger rebellion. Fulcrum was revealed to be Ahsoka Tano, a survivor of the Jedi Purge and a key rebel leader. The rebels also joined the Phoenix Cell, which operated a fleet of starships. The Phantom and its mothership narrowly survived an attack on the Phoenix fleet by Darth Vader.

Following their escape, the Phantom was used by the rebels on a mission to Seelos, a desert planet. Ahsoka had dispatched the rebels to contact Rex, a former Clone Captain and old friend from the Clone Wars. The rebels needed new bases, and Ahsoka believed that Rex knew the location of several Clone Wars-era facilities. While Hera and Chopper waited in the Ghost, Kanan and the other rebels traveled to Seelos on the Phantom. After contacting Rex and two other former Clone commanders, the Phantom was attacked and damaged by an Imperial probe droid. The rebels and clones managed to destroy the probe droid and repair the shuttle.

Shortly afterward, an Imperial Star Destroyer, commanded by Admiral Kassius Konstantine and Agent Kallus, arrived over Seelos. During the subsequent battle, the rebels departed on the Phantom, while Rex and his comrades held back Kallus' AT-AT walkers with their antiquated AT-TE walker. At Ezra's urging, Kanan decided to assist the clone veterans and used the Phantom to destroy one of the AT-AT walkers. After defeating the Imperials, the clone commanders agreed to join the Rebellion.

Later, Sabine, Zeb, Chopper, and Ezra traveled on the Phantom during a mission to retrieve medical supplies from an abandoned Old Republic medical base in space. After docking the shuttle in a hangar bay, the four rebels ventured into the space station, only to be ambushed by two Inquisitors, the Seventh Sister and the Fifth Brother. The Inquisitors overpowered and captured Chopper, Ezra, and Sabine, but Zeb managed to escape and free Chopper. Using the Phantom's intercom, he impersonated "Commander Meiloorun" and tricked the Inquisitors into entering the hangar bay. Following another struggle, he freed the other two rebels, and they escaped into space to rejoin the fleet.

Following their encounter with the two Inquisitors, Ezra and Chopper used the Phantom to assist Vizago, whose ship, the Broken Horn, had been seized by Hondo Ohnaka, a Weequay pirate. After docking the Phantom in the Broken Horn's hangar bay, the two rebels encountered Ohnaka, who claimed to have won the Broken Horn from Vizago in a sabacc game. Together, the three attempted to sell power generators to Azmorigan, a Jablogian crime lord.

After escaping Azmorigan, Ezra and Chopper discovered a captive Vizago and freed him. During the ensuing fight between Vizago and Ohnaka, Ohnaka fled to Garel on the Phantom. However, the Phantom's autopilot was programmed to return to its mothership. The Phantom, along with Ohnaka and the power generators, was subsequently recovered by the other members of the Ghost's crew. Ohnaka was allowed to keep his earnings but agreed to hand over the power generators to the rebels, who used them to help the people of Rinn, who were experiencing an energy crisis.

The hyperdrive upgrade and beyond

The Phantom with an astromech socket

Hera, Sabine, and Zeb later employed the Phantom to investigate the possibility of utilizing an experimental new starfighter being developed on Shantipole to break a blockade that was preventing relief supplies from reaching overworked laborers on Ibaar. Due to atmospheric hazards, the Phantom became disabled and crash-landed on the landing pad of Quarrie's secret research and development station. Quarrie provided several parts to restore the Phantom to flight-worthiness and also secretly installed an aftermarket hyperdrive engine.

The Phantom then used this hyperdrive to deliver the prototype Blade Wing fighter to the rebel blockade run to Ibaar. Because test-firing an experimental heavy weapon on the Blade Wing had disabled its own integrated hyperdrive, the Blade Wing had to be ferried through hyperspace by the Phantom, which was now equipped with Quarrie's only other available hyperdrive engine. Thanks to the Phantom's timely delivery, the Blade Wing turned the blockade run into a blockade bust.

Later, Kanan, Ezra, Chopper, and Zeb used the Phantom to travel to Hammertown, a settlement on Takobo. Tano had sent the four rebels on a mission to investigate a set of coordinates belonging to the Inquisitors. Upon arriving, the rebels learned that the Fifth Brother and Seventh Sister were kidnapping Force-sensitive babies. The rebels managed to rescue two younglings, Alora and Pypey. After fighting off the Inquisitors with Ahsoka's help, the rebels fled to Garel, which had become home to a significant rebel presence.

Following the Battle of Garel, Kanan, Ezra, and Chopper used the Phantom to travel to Lothal. Ezra had previously received a Force vision of his parents, Ephraim and Mira Bridger, and decided to find them. After discovering a gap in the Imperial fleet, the Phantom traveled to Lothal. After landing at Capital City, Chopper remained aboard the Phantom while Ezra searched for the loth-cat he had seen in his vision. When the loth-cat escaped on a speeder bike into the wilderness, the three rebels used the Phantom to track the speeder bike to a remote camp. There, the three rebels encountered Ryder Azadi, the former Governor of Lothal, who had known Ezra's parents. Azadi revealed that Ezra's parents had died during an escape attempt inspired by Ezra's recent broadcast from the Imperial Communications Center.

When Imperial forces stumbled upon Azadi's hideout, a brief skirmish erupted when the other members of the Ghost's crew arrived. During the skirmish, Chopper secured the Phantom by entering the ship's astromech socket and piloting it into the Ghost. Later, the Phantom was used during a successful operation by the Ghost's crew to steal three Sphyrna-class Hammerhead corvettes from an Imperial depot in Jalath. Bail Organa, an Alderaanian Senator, had sent three Hammerhead corvettes to reinforce the Phoenix rebels' depleted forces. Because the Alderaanians could not be seen directly supporting the rebels, Bail arranged for his adopted daughter, Leia Organa, a Princess, to deliver the ships to Lothal, where the Ghost's crew would "steal" them. However, Yogar Lyste, the Imperial Supply Master, had attached gravity locks to the ships to prevent theft.

With the cooperation of Leia and Ryder Azadi, the rebels implemented their plan. Disguised in Imperial uniforms, Kanan and Ezra accompanied Leia back to the Imperial depot in the Phantom. Upon landing, Kanan claimed that they were Imperial personnel who had rescued Leia from the rebels. While Lyste and his stormtroopers were distracted, the other rebels disabled the gravity locks and stole the Hammerhead corvettes. After completing their mission, Chopper and Ezra escaped Lothal aboard the Phantom and returned with the Ghost to the rebel fleet, which was waiting on the outskirts of the Lothal system.

Ferrying the rebels

Kanan captures Rau the Phantom

The Phantom also saw use by Kanan, Sabine, and Chopper during a sabotage mission targeting the third moon of Concord Dawn. Prior to this, the rebels had tried to negotiate safe passage through the Concord Dawn system with the Mandalorian Protectors, a Mandalorian group who had established a colony on Concord Dawn. However, the Protectors' leader, Fenn Rau, had sided with the Imperials and attacked the rebel diplomatic party, causing serious injuries to Hera. As a result, the rebels chose to destroy the Protectors' Fang fighters, which were located at a base on Concord Dawn's third moon.

During this operation, Chopper piloted the Phantom into the moon's atmosphere, dropping off Kanan and Sabine near the encampment. He then maneuvered the shuttle away from the base to avoid attracting the attention of the Mandalorians. After Sabine successfully destroyed seven Fang fighters, she contacted Chopper to be picked up by the Ghost. Chopper collected Sabine before the Phantom met up with Kanan in the upper atmosphere. Kanan had commandeered Rau's starfighter and successfully incapacitated him. The Jedi then jumped into the Phantom's open rear hatchway, bringing Rau along. Having completed their objective and captured Rau, the Phantom then made its way back to the rebel fleet. Following his capture, Rau permitted the rebels to pass through the Concord Dawn system in return for keeping his capture a secret from the Empire.

During the Ghost's crew's journey to Lira San, the Phantom was housed in its mother ship's rear section for the majority of the trip. Once the rebels rediscovered Lira San, Zeb and the two Lasat refugees, Gron and Chava, utilized the Phantom to travel to the surface of Lira San. Upon arrival, they discovered that Lira San was actually the original Lasat homeworld and that it was already inhabited by millions of Lasat. While Gron and Chava decided to remain on Lira San, Zeb returned on the Phantom to rejoin his rebel comrades aboard the Ghost.

With the Ghost, its mother ship, experiencing low fuel and power, the crew participated in a heist at a Mining Guild Asteroid Belt Gas Refinery to secure fuel for both their ship and the fleet. Due to the Ghost's power shortage, Captain Hera was compelled to reroute power from the Phantom to support the rest of the ship. Consequently, the Phantom remained aboard the Ghost throughout the raid. The rebels successfully obtained the fuel canisters and destroyed the gas refinery, aided by the purrgil, massive space-dwelling creatures capable of hyperspace travel.

Later on, Kanan and Ezra utilized the Phantom in their search for Zeb after an ambush on an Imperial construction module above the planet Geonosis. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to find Zeb, who had landed with Agent Kallus in an escape pod on the icy moon of Bahryn. It was there that Zeb and Kallus overcame their animosity, forming an unexpected friendship as they struggled to survive the cold and fend off several bonzami beasts. After repairing his transponder, the rebels managed to pinpoint his signal to Bahryn, where they rescued him.

Chopper, Kanan, and Ezra later journeyed on the Phantom to scout the planet Oosalon as a potential site for a new rebel base. While Kanan and Ezra explored the planet's surface, Chopper remained in the air aboard the Phantom. After Kanan and Ezra encountered difficulties with the Fifth Brother and the Seventh Sister, Chopper met up with the Jedis' tibidee and picked them up. To avoid drawing the Inquisitors' attention to the fleet, Kanan instructed Hera to rendezvous with them in deep space. While the Phantom docked with the Ghost's rear, Kanan briefed the other crew and Tano about their problems on Oosalon.

Subsequently, Chopper piloted the Phantom, transporting Kanan, Ezra, and Ahsoka to the Jedi Temple on Lothal. While the three Jedi entered the Temple, Chopper remained with the Phantom. As night approached, Chopper detected approaching starships on his satellite and departed on the Phantom. Shortly thereafter, the Fifth Brother and Seventh Sister arrived in their TIE Advanced v1 starfighters. Once the Jedi had concluded their communication with Yoda and the Force within the Temple, they returned to the Phantom and fled into space before additional Imperial reinforcements could arrive.

Sabine fighting off a krykna on the Phantom

Following the discovery of the planet Atollon, the Phoenix rebels established a base, known as Chopper Base, on the planet's surface. After the disappearance of Lieutenant Dicer, Rex and Sabine took the Phantom to investigate the base's northern perimeter. Shortly thereafter, they found themselves under attack by several large spider-like creatures referred to as krykna. One of the krykna managed to swarm the Phantom. Sabine successfully fought off the krykna, but Rex was taken captive. Following the arrival of reinforcements aboard the Ghost, Chopper secured the Phantom and returned it to the rear compartment of the Ghost. Following a skirmish, the Phantom and its mother ship escaped back to Chopper Base.

The Phantom on Malachor.

Kanan, Ezra, and Ahsoka utilized the Phantom during their mission to Malachor with the goal of acquiring knowledge on how to defeat the Sith. During the expedition, Chopper fulfilled the role of the ship's pilot from his astromech socket. After landing the Jedi and Tano, Chopper was instructed by Kanan to use the Phantom to locate a second starship. This starship turned out to be a TIE Advanced v1 fighter belonging to the Eighth Brother, another Inquisitor who had launched an attack on the Jedi and Tano. Before the Malachor Sith Temple's destruction, Chopper used the Phantom to evacuate Ezra and Kanan. However, the Jedi were unable to rescue Ahsoka, who was trapped with her former Jedi mentor Darth Vader inside the doomed temple. The Phantom landed safely at Chopper Base, where the Spectres and Rex greeted her passengers.

Last mission

The Phantom is destroyed at Reklam Station.

After rescuing Hondo Ohnaka from the Imperial prison on Naraka, Ezra, Sabine, Zeb, Chopper, Rex, and Hondo traveled aboard the Phantom to the Imperial junkyard known as Reklam Station, which was situated within the gas planet of Yarma. En route, Sabine and Chopper exited hyperspace at Sereeda Waypoint. There, a Mining Guild patrol intercepted them, demanding they halt and explain their intrusion into Mining Guild space. After Chopper and Sabine shot down two TIE/mg Mining Guild starfighters, the Phantom jumped into hyperspace and arrived at Yarma. With Hondo guiding them, the rebels flew into Yarma's gaseous atmosphere and located Reklam Station. During their approach, they were attacked by two DTS-series Dismantler Droids, but Chopper and Rex successfully repelled them. During the ensuing dogfight, the Phantom sustained damage, but Sabine managed to regain control.

She docked the ship beneath a floating platform at Reklam Station. The rebels then infiltrated the station and, with the assistance of the Ugnaught laborers, managed to steal the Y-Wing light bombers. The Phantom was destroyed after Ezra cut off power to the station, causing Reklam Station to crash into Yarma's surface. Ezra attempted to escape on the Phantom, but before he could reach it, the platform it was hanging on plummeted into the volatile surface below and exploded. Hera and Kanan later rescued Ezra aboard the Ghost. Hera reprimanded Ezra for his recklessness and the loss of the Phantom. As a consequence of his actions, Ezra was suspended from his position as Lieutenant Commander. During a mission to Agamar, Ezra, Chopper, Rex, Kanan, and Zeb escaped from the Empire on a Sheathipede-class transport shuttle, which became the new Phantom, named the Phantom II, replacing the one destroyed at Reklam Station.

Behind the scenes

The Ghost's attack shuttle was originally identified as the Wolf in concept art featured in a video released on October 12, 2013. This video showcased concept art from the upcoming animated series Star Wars Rebels. However, the ship was officially revealed as the Phantom at the January 2014 Nuremberg International Toy Fair, with the announcement of a LEGO set featuring the shuttle.
