Galactic Republic
The Galactic Republic, alternatively known as the Grand Republic or just the Republic, constituted a democratic federal union that extended across numerous light-years of space. The terms Old Republic and first Galactic Republic were used to describe the Republic before its modern iteration, which existed until 1032 BBY. The term Old Republic also encompassed the modern Republic that was superseded by the Galactic Empire in 19 BBY. Furthermore, the High Republic specifically referred to the era during which the Republic reached its peak of influence, spanning roughly from 500 BBY to 100 BBY. Established many millennia prior to the Battle of Yavin, around 25,000 BBY, the Republic's founding coincided approximately with the emergence of the Jedi Order. Under the framework of the Galactic Constitution, the Republic was governed by the Galactic Senate, which comprised thousands of senators representing the Republic's diverse member worlds. The Supreme Chancellor served as the Republic's head of state, elected from the Senate's ranks to preside over the government from Coruscant. Coruscant, an ecumenopolis or planet entirely covered by city, also known as Galactic City, functioned as the Republic's capital and, consequently, the seat of the Senate.
Encompassing a multitude of worlds from the Core Worlds to the Outer Rim Territories, the Galactic Republic and its associated star systems possessed shared sovereignty. It united a wide array of sentient species, both human and alien, under one banner. Throughout its expansion, the Republic engaged in numerous conflicts against various adversaries, including the Mandalorians, the Zygerrian Slave Empire, the Nihil, and several Sith Empires. The Jedi Order, a religious organization of Force-sensitives devoted to the light side of the Force, pledged its service to the Senate. Consequently, the Jedi Knights were celebrated as the guardians of peace and justice within the Republic. After centuries of conflict, the fall of the Old Republic occurred, and the last war between the ancient Jedi and Sith concluded with the restoration and rise of the modern Galactic Republic, ushering in the Republic Era, an age of peace that endured for a thousand years. The Republic's history was officially reset, with the eras preceding this event consolidated into a collective period known as the Old Republic-era.
Following centuries of expansion and prosperity, the Republic experienced a period of decline. With the assistance of the resurgent Sith Lords, the Separatist Crisis created a divide in the galaxy between Republic loyalists and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Under the command of Jedi Generals, the Grand Army of the Republic was established, leading the Republic Military against the Separatist Droid Army throughout the Clone Wars. However, this conflict had been orchestrated to allow Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine—secretly Darth Sidious, the Dark Lord of the Sith—to manipulate and control the Republic in a dictatorial manner. At the end of the war, Sidious initiated the Great Jedi Purge through Order 66 and transformed the Republic into the Galactic Empire by declaring himself Galactic Emperor. Until its disbandment by the Emperor during the height of the Imperial Era, the Imperial Senate served as the last vestige of the Old Republic. After the Galactic Civil War, the Alliance to Restore the Republic underwent a complete reorganization, becoming the New Republic and restoring the Galactic Republic after a generation of Imperial rule.
History
The Genesis of Freedom
Around 25,000 BBY, the original Galactic Republic came into being, achieving prominence through expansion across the galaxy. Alderaan and Chandrila were among its founding planets. The Thisspiasian Blood Monarchy became part of the Galactic Republic early on, around 20,019 BBY. Throughout its long history, the Republic existed in various forms. Historians refer to this pre-modern period as the "Old Republic," although the government's official designation remained the Galactic Republic. The capital of the Old Republic was situated on an ecumenopolis known as Coruscant, a location it would maintain for millennia.
At one point, Troithe, another city-covered world, rivaled Coruscant as the Republic's cosmopolitan hub, boasting a population in the billions that included many members of prominent merchant and noble families. However, Coruscant eventually surpassed Troithe in industrial development, leading to Troithe's decline over time. At least five millennia before the Galactic Civil War, a rogue faction of Jedi seceded from the Jedi Order, believing that the dark side of the Force could enhance Jedi power. This division triggered the Hundred-Year Darkness, which ultimately led to the formation of the Sith. They even managed to erect a dark shrine on Coruscant. The rogue faction was defeated and exiled from the Old Republic into uncharted territories.
To contain its dark energy, the Jedi Temple was later constructed atop the Sith shrine. After establishing itself on Coruscant, the Jedi Order became closely associated with the Old Republic, serving as guardians of peace and justice for over a thousand generations. Unbeknownst to the Jedi, the Sith had regrouped on the planet Moraband.
Well before the Imperial Era, the Corellian royalty sponsored exploration and colonization, contributing to the expansion of the Old Republic. Hyperspace travel proved crucial in extending the Republic's reach beyond the Core Worlds.
A Galactic Convergence of Fates
As the Old Republic expanded its influence across the stars, it encountered various other powers, including the Zygerrian Slave Empire. Given its stance against slavery, which it had outlawed and expected other civilizations to respect, the Old Republic adopted an aggressive approach toward the Zygerrians. The Zygerrian Empire, built on slavery, refused to comply, leading to intervention by the Old Republic and the Jedi. Uniting their armies, the Old Republic and Jedi Order launched an offensive against the Zygerrian Empire after its refusal to comply. The Old Republic emerged victorious, driving slave trading underground, dismantling the empire, and confining its remnants to Zygerria, their homeworld. Another power was the rogue Predori empire.

The Sith eventually returned with renewed strength, invading the Old Republic and engaging the Jedi and the Republic in a series of conflicts that lasted for thousands of years, ultimately contributing to the Old Republic's collapse. During one of these wars, the Jedi fought the Sith Empire on Malachor, resulting in one of the most devastating battles in the Order's history.
At some point, the Old Republic encountered the Mandalorian people, a warrior civilization that initiated a series of unprovoked military campaigns against the Republic. As all-out war erupted, the Jedi intervened to defend the Republic. Simultaneously, Republic and Jedi forces continued to battle the expanding Sith Empire. Both sides constructed massive superweapons powered by large kyber crystals, capable of widespread destruction.
The Middle Era of the Old Republic represents a distinct period in galactic history. The Galactic Republic also participated in the Sith Wars, a series of conflicts against the Sith Empire that involved the Chiss Ascendancy. The Ascendancy encountered several aliens before retreating to their borders.
The Demise of the Old Republic

The Jedi Order, faced with the Sith civilization, the warrior culture of Mandalore, and their continuous warfare that disregarded the Jedi mandate to protect the weak, continued to mobilize its forces to halt enemy incursions into Old Republic territory.
During the fall of the Old Republic, the Sith Empire's power grew, eventually achieving near-dominance across the galaxy. It was also during this period that an ancestor of Pre Vizsla, leader of the Mandalorian group Death Watch during the Clone Wars, stole the Darksaber from the Jedi Temple.
The galaxy entered a state known as the Dark Age, during which the Jedi-Sith War broke out. Early in this conflict, the Sith seized control of Coruscant, the Old Republic's capital, during the Battle of Coruscant. Later, the Jedi drove the Sith off the planet during the Liberation of Coruscant.
Embers of Hope
After reclaiming its capital, the Old Republic regained some strength and launched an offensive. The Jedi were powerful enough to end their ancient war against the Mandalorian clans. A battle on Mandalore left the planet devastated and lifeless. Around this time, the Sith were defeated in 1032 BBY. Taking advantage of infighting within the Sith Order, the Old Republic and Jedi Knights defeated the remaining Sith on the Mid Rim Territories planet Ruusan. The Sith abandoned their traditional homeworld of Moraband after it was scarred by many wars, and went into hiding. With few Sith remaining, they ultimately destroyed themselves. Only Darth Bane survived, reinventing the Sith by creating the Rule of Two, limiting their ranks to a Sith Master and a Sith apprentice.

As the Old Republic crumbled due to continuous warfare, the Jedi Order believed they had triumphed over the Sith, whom they believed to be completely destroyed. With peace restored, the shattered Old Republic reorganized into the modern Galactic Republic, ushering in over a thousand years of stability known as the Great Peace. The story of Old Republic Regent Hylemane Lightbringer and his supposed immortality would be remembered in history texts along with Old Republic music such as the Sestina of Imperator Vex, which would continue to be sung even in the months following the Battle of Endor.
The Ascent of Democracy

In 1032 BBY, the Old Republic was reborn as the modern Galactic Republic. After the Galactic Republic's reformation, the Zygerrians continued to harbor resentment toward both the Republic and the Jedi Order for destroying their slave empire.
The modern Republic, a democratic union comprising multiple star systems spread across the galaxy, experienced an era of peace and stability for over a millennium, marked by only small-scale conflicts handled by the Jedi. This version of the Republic remained largely demilitarized, relying on the Jedi Knights to uphold peace and justice.
The Four Sages of Dwartii significantly influenced its early laws. The newly reorganized government established the Galactic Senate as its governing body, with members elected to represent their systems. Coruscant remained the galactic seat of power, as it had been for millennia before the Republic's rebirth.
The [Supreme Chancellor](/article/supreme_chancellor], the Republic's head of state, was elected by and from the senators. Tarsus Valorum, a member of House Valorum, was the first in a long line of Chancellors. The elite Senate Guard protected the new democracy, patrolling the Senate District and symbolizing strength and unity, especially given the disbandment of the military. The Jedi Order, an order of protectors who could tap into the power of the Force, served the Republic as guardians of peace and justice. Lacking a standing army, the Republic relied on its peacekeeping Judicial Forces, led by the Judicial Department as the de facto law enforcement branch of the government. Members of the Judicial Forces, known as Judicials, trained at the Judicial Academy and served in both ground and space forces, often led by Jedi Commanders to maintain peace throughout the galaxy.
The High Republic Era
A Gilded Age
The High Republic Era, spanning from around 500 BBY to 100 BBY, marked the Galactic Republic's zenith, with its influence extending to the farthest and least settled regions of the galaxy. The Republic focused on expanding into the Outer Rim, particularly the Galactic Frontier. The Jedi Order became more involved in galactic affairs, supporting the Republic's efforts. An Office of the Frontier was established. The Republic's expansion triggered the Great Hyperspace Rush to discover and map undiscovered hyperspace routes, with Republic Pathfinders working directly for the government as Outer Rim Exploration Teams. Private groups, like the San Tekka clan and Graf family, also participated in the rush. The San Tekka clan's success in finding new routes and accumulating wealth was secretly due to Mari San Tekka, a Force-sensitive individual with the ability to locate and map routes.
Beyond charting new hyperlanes, Republic Pathfinders were tasked with exploring, assisting those they encountered, and establishing a functioning communications network across the Outer Rim. Pathfinder teams often worked with comms teams to maintain contact with the Republic. However, the network had to be built node by node. While the Pathfinders knew the long-term effort would eventually lead to communications being as fast in the Rim as it was in the Core, Grint Rupar of Outer Rim Expedition Eight-Zero-Seven believed the work would take generations. Nevertheless, Jedi Porter Engle considered it a noble effort that would improve lives. Jedi Order members worked alongside Pathfinders, traveling with them and aiding the Republic's efforts. One Pathfinder team, while mapping hyperlanes near Sullust, discovered the volcanic planet Tunguray and evacuated its people to safety on Coruscant.

Around 382 BBY, leadership of the Republic was shared between two chancellors, Orlen Mollo and Kyong Greylark. Elected and re-elected together, their joint leadership facilitated the Republic's outreach. While Greylark remained on Coruscant with the Senate, Mollo traveled across the Outer Rim with his aides and crew aboard the Alif-class Longbeam Paxion, taking a hands-on approach to governance. Mollo, having experienced conflict on Mon Cala, believed he understood the Outer Rim better but trusted his Co-Chancellor, who he believed saw the promise in the Outer Rim but not the finer details he could, all the same due to their shared vision: a truly united galaxy.
Ambassador ships like the Paxion were equipped with top-of-the-line protocol droids, with the Paxion receiving unit AR-K4. With the Republic aided by the Jedi, the Republic and Togrutas engaged in a conflict in Togruta space that left tensions between both parties. While Greylark believed the star system was not ready for their intervention, Mollo traveled to the planets of Eiram and E'ronoh, which were home to a war he hoped to finally put a stop to. At the same time, a team of Jedi—consisting of Master Char-Ryl-Roy, Master Creighton Sun, Knight Gella Nattai, and Padawan Enya Keen—traveled into the system aboard the Valiant to provide aid to Eiram, only to collide with the Paxion amid a skirmish that had secretly been orchestrated by the Path of the Open Hand cult under the control of "the Mother." Despite the rocky opening, Mollo and the Jedi began the peace process between both worlds' royal families aboard the Paxion, although progress only truly started to be made when E'ronohi princess Xiri A'lbaran proposed to Eirami prince Phan-tu Zenn, thereby setting the stage for a marriage alliance and an unlikely love story.
Meanwhile on Coruscant, Greylark feared Mollo was making a play at a solo-chancellery ahead of the campaign season. In reality, Mollo simply wanted to be the one to bring peace to the system because of his own past surrounded by war. Deep down, Greylark did trust in her fellow Chancellor, but sent her controversial son Axel Greylark to represent her office in the peace proceedings and report back to her. Axel's own dealings with the Path of the Open Hand nearly led to the destruction of the peace process after cult leader Elecia Zeveron demanded he bring her a toxin developed on Eiram. Amid the successful Wedding of Phan-tu Zenn and Xiri A'lbaran officiated by Mollo, Axel's desperation to prevent Zeveron from securing the toxin led to him destroying the deflector shields around Eiram's capital of Erasmus. After Axel's arrest, the royals agreeing to destroy the toxin, and the formal beginning of the peace process, Mollo reminded his fellow Chancellor to trust him, to which Greylark admitted she did and she had simply wanted to trust her son as well.
Conflict with the Path

With the understanding that representatives from Eirami and the E'roni would convene on the neutral grounds of Jedha to forge a formal treaty, Chancellor Mollo authorized Morton San Tekka to preside over the discussions as an unbiased mediator, a choice preferred over dispatching a Republic official. Nevertheless, the involvement of Tilson, a member of the Path and the Graf family, ignited the Battle of Jedha, obliterating any prospect of enduring peace between Eiram and E'ronoh. Responding swiftly to a transmission from Sun detailing the peace process's breakdown, a contingent of Jedi, accompanied by a platoon of Republic peacekeeping troops, intervened to quell the conflict. Suspicion correctly fell upon the Path as the instigators of the carnage, but the Mother publicly attributed the events to rogue acolytes, attempting to salvage her order's reputation by pledging a minimum of one million Zukkels toward the reconstruction of Jedha City. While the funds were accepted, the revelation that an organization like the Path possessed such substantial resources prompted a discreet Republic investigation, which soon uncovered the Mother's connections to wealthy patrons whom she had swayed to finance her cult.
Following the Battle of Jedha, the Path of the Open Hand facilitated Axel's escape from imprisonment, transporting him to their Path compound on the planet Dalna. There, he was greeted by the Mother, who aimed to exploit his relationship with Chancellor Greylark to gain leverage over the galaxy. The Mother's scheme included the planned demise of Mollo in a staged accident during his travels across the Rim. Concurrently, the Mother incited her followers against the Republic, alleging that the Jedi dominated the government and galactic media, in anticipation of the impending Battle of Dalna. After Axel, as part of the Mother's machinations, sent a message to his mother requesting her presence on Dalna, Greylark, driven by maternal instinct and recognizing the potential danger to the galaxy should she arrive in her official capacity, chose to support her son. Consequently, she resigned from her position as Chancellor, leaving Mollo as the Republic's sole leader, much to his surprise.
With the justification of investigating the Path, Jedi forces, backed by the Republic, arrived on Dalna. The Republic sanctioned the action and deployed guards Priv Ittik and Lu Sweet to assist the Jedi. As the situation escalated into a battle, the Jedi received support from anti-Path Dalnans, but they also encountered Force-consuming entities known as the Nameless. Ultimately, Greylark arrived on Dalna to aid her son, and the combined military forces of Eiram and E'ronoh intervened to defeat the Path after its divisive tactics were exposed. Despite the reinforcements' success in halting the fighting, the battle's heavy casualties, culminating in the Path's destruction of its own caverns, led to its remembrance as a massacre known as the Night of Sorrow. From one perspective, the massacre was a direct consequence of the Jedi-Republic alliance, yet the victory in the battle was perceived as evidence of the strength derived from the partnership between the two organizations.

In the aftermath of the conflict, Axel consented to serve his prison sentence and disclosed his knowledge of the Path's inner workings, even though the cult's membership had scattered across the galaxy. Marda Ro, a key leader known as the Guide of the Closed Fist, evaded capture and embarked on a new path of vengeance by establishing the Nihil, a plan that would be continued by future generations of the Ro family. Jedi Masters Crieghton Sun and Yoda also decided to conceal all information regarding the Nameless until further details could be uncovered. Simultaneously, a fresh treaty was poised to be signed by the now-cooperating populations of Eiram and E'ronoh. Two weeks after the battle, a ceremony, overseen by Mollo, was conducted on their shared moon to commemorate the union of Eiram and E'ronoh and the opening of a new hyperlane. At an unspecified time, the San Tekka clan lost Mari San Tekka to the Ro family, who exploited her abilities to locate hyperspace Paths for their own revenge plot.
The Starlight Beacon program

In the year 232 BBY, the Galactic Republic was governed by Supreme Chancellor Lina Soh and Vice Chancellor Larep Reza, a prominent figure in the Senate considered Soh's likely successor upon the conclusion of her term. To demonstrate solidarity with all species within its borders, the government adopted the motto "We are all the Republic." Under Soh's leadership, the Republic also initiated measures to mitigate its bureaucratic tendencies when decisive action was required; despite the issue's persistence, the Republic made substantial progress in overcoming it. At some point the Republic intervened in the Soikan civil war to finally put a stop to the seemingly-endless conflict.
In conjunction with its outreach program, the Republic was experiencing an era characterized by inclusivity, where all voices were valued, leading to governance by consensus and a society defined by culture, inclusion, ambition, and Soh's numerous Great Works. Among the earliest of these endeavors—encompassing a wide range of initiatives from infrastructure projects to cultural events—was the Panacea, a Salvation-class Republic medical frigate deployed to assist citizens in the aftermath of various crises; consequently, the frigate became emblematic of the Republic's commitment to its citizens' well-being. Other planned Great Works included a new treaty between the Mon Calamari and Quarren, the Republic Fair, various communication relays, solidifying the understanding of how to cultivate Bacta, and various innovations in fields like technology. Nevertheless, the most significant of these works was Starlight Beacon, envisioned as the first in a network of Beacons intended to extend the Republic's influence beyond the Core.

Constructed at considerable expense and effort, overcoming numerous challenges over an extended period, Starlight Beacon was conceived to expand the Republic's reach into the uncharted "dark zones" of the Outer Rim Territories, fulfilling Soh's pledge to integrate the region into the Republic, with the intention of providing genuine assistance to the Outer Rim rather than merely traversing it or exploiting it for taxation purposes. Beyond serving as a navigational aid and communication hub, the Beacon functioned as a Republic embassy within the Galactic Frontier, fulfilling multiple roles, including a fortress against piracy, a venue for cultural exhibitions, a cutting-edge medical facility, and, notably, a substantial Jedi temple. The Jedi offered support to the Republic and its projects. The Jedi established outposts on many Outer Rim worlds, ensuring they could explore and protect those who lived without much of a Republic presence.
Despite the Outer Rim's inherent challenges and dangers, numerous impoverished settlers migrated to the region from the overpopulated Core Worlds and Colonies, seeking new opportunities. These aspirations were supported by the Republic, which—despite its imperfections—fostered the hopes of its citizens, regardless of their scale. Furthermore, Soh sought to instill a sense of ownership among the Republic's populace, initiating the construction of Starlight Beacon to facilitate its expansion into the Outer Rim. The beacon embodied Soh's vision for the Republic, ensuring its ability to extend its influence from the Core to encompass the entire galaxy. While some within the government favored maintaining the status quo, prioritizing financial reserves for potential crises, Soh, having demonstrated the benefits of unity, persevered with her initiatives to bring the Republic to the Rim. Every Senator recognized that the success of Starlight would realize Soh's aspirations for future generations to thrive, while its failure would have significant repercussions.

Lacking a formal military due to the galaxy's prevailing peace, the Republic relied on a small peacekeeping force known as the Republic Defense Coalition, supported by the Jedi Order. Despite the extensive collaboration between the Jedi and the Republic during this era, some Jedi questioned the appropriateness of such close alignment with the government, wondering if it truly aligned with the will of the Force. Indeed, Jedi Master Cohmac Vitus believed it was a Republic and Jedi partnership that had led to the massacre on Dalna from over a century prior. The partnership between the two parties would only increase when the Nihil conflict began; the conflict began when starships were abruptly knocked out of hyperspace in a galaxy-wide event known as the Great Hyperspace Disaster caused by the Eye of the Nihil Marchion Ro, a member of the Ro family who had destroyed the transport Legacy Run in hyperspace, which made its remains come out of hyperspace in the Hetzal system, causing a sudden crisis as they rained upon the system. Beyond seeking revenge on the Jedi for secretive, family reasons, Ro initiated his plan to enable the Nihil raiders to expand beyond their current capabilities. Recognizing the Republic's expansion into the Outer Rim, he understood the need for the Nihil to adapt to survive, launching his scheme to secure leadership over the raiders.

In response to the Hetzalian government's distress signal, the RDC dispatched the Emissary-class Republic Cruiser Third Horizon to the Hetzal system. Aboard the vessel, Jedi Master Avar Kriss oversaw the operation, discerning through her Force network that some of the fragments impacting the system contained living beings. She played a pivotal role in the effort to rescue the system's refugees and those aboard the fragments until she detected a large container of liquid tibanna threatening the system's R-class star. Kriss and the other Jedi focused their combined abilities to move the container using the Force, while the RDC continued to prioritize the evacuation of the remaining refugees. The Jedi's endeavor to move the container was broadcast across the Outer Rim and into the inner Republic worlds by technician Keven Tarr; while he had at first only sent the signal to Chancellor Soh, he did not want his star system to be destroyed without being acknowledged, so the people of the Republic watched the Jedi effort. Initially, the Force users were unsuccessful, but their subsequent attempt succeeded in moving the container, saving Hetzal and eliciting widespread jubilation throughout the Republic.
Although the Republic determined that the destruction of the Legacy Run had triggered the disaster, the government remained unaware of the underlying cause, leading Soh to fear the possibility of another hyperspace catastrophe. Moreover, the Republic confronted the Emergences, which occurred when remaining fragments of the Legacy Run, continuing their trajectory through hyperspace, materialized in Outer Rim systems, resulting in debris raining down and causing destruction upon impact. The First Emergence transpired in the Ab Dalis system, situated along the same hyperspace route as the Run, and these Emergences continued to proliferate. Consequently, Soh feared that the Republic might be compelled to suspend hyperspace travel, thereby isolating worlds and effectively dismantling the galactic government. Furthermore, the Nihil exploited the First Emergence, launching a raid on a convoy of ships carrying refugees. Nevertheless, only Ro, as the orchestrator of the disaster, understood their direct responsibility for the Great Disaster and its aftermath.
Conflict with the Nihil
In a larger mobilization effort than anything done for sometime, Soh established an RDC blockade of various Outer Rim hyperspace routes, intending to protect starships from being destroyed in hyperspace by stopping that travel altogether. The blockade would ultimately be forced to grow as more systems were effected by the Emergences. As predicted by Senator Izzet Noor, who served as the spokesperson in the Senate for the majority of the Outer Rim, the blockade brought strife, as many Rim worlds were not self-sufficient and depended on hyperspace for trade. During a meeting on Coruscant fifteen Emergences into the crisis, Soh had pledged to send supply ships into hyperspace if a food crisis grew too dire, although the halting of the trade still had major negative effects for the Rim. During that same meeting, she established that the hyperlanes would remain closed, minus limited transport of essential goods, until they knew more about the crisis before noting she was unwilling to postpone the dedication of the Starlight Beacon; it was nearly finished, and she wanted to use the event to showcase a triumph over adversity.

Survivors of the first Emergence and Great Hyperspace Disaster were taken to the yet-to-officially open Starlight for medical treatment. With Starlight due to open in thirty days, Soh gave that as the timeline to solve the Emergence crisis; she did not want to open the way station while the blockade was still ongoing, knowing it would appear as if the Republic could not protect its own people. Due to the blockade, the Nihil's craft became the only ships traveling at lightspeed, making Ro suggest they slow down operations—stating they could attract the attention of the Jedi or RDC—while also sowing the seeds for his takeover, approving the raid on Elphrona to ensure a Jedi would be captured. Meanwhile with the Republic, technician Tarr, having tracked the previous Emergences to form a pattern, began to construct a system of thousands of navigation droids, hoping it could be used to predict where future Emergences would be and find the Legacy Run's black box. Assigned to learn more about the Emergences, Jedi Avar Kriss and Elzar Mann were also directed to meet with the San Tekka Clan on Naboo by Noor, yet Patriarchs Vellis and Marlowe San Tekka did not disclose any information about Mari, despite realizing her abilities could have caused the crisis and giving the Republic effort other aid.
In the wake of an Emergence and Nihil attack, the Republic rescue fleet was deployed to the planet Trymant IV. The Republic effectively assumed the Nihil were destroyed in the Battle of Kur, but the marauders survived and began to launch their raids on a galaxy-wide scale, instead of remaining in the Outer Rim. The Nihil attack on Valo was a major blow to the Republic, although it did give a chance for the Republic and Torgrutas to heal their relations. In the aftermath of the Battle of Grizal, Republic forces rallied under Jedi Master Emerick Caphtor to clear out a Nihil base on Vrant Tarnum. Following the end of the Drengir crisis, the Republic and Jedi were able to focus their efforts on defeating the Nihil through Operation: Counterstrike, in which the Republic and Jedi moved to wipe out all known Nihil bases. However, the conflict also resulted in the Republic and Jedi growing closer together, with Chancellor Soh and her aides coming to insert themselves into even the Jedi Council's normally private meetings. In secret, the Nihil had also infiltrated the Galactic Senate via Senator Ghirra Starros and Jeni Wataro, aide to Senator Noor. In 200 BBY, Jedi Padawan Sean remembered that the Nihil had launched an invasion of the Republic.
Expansion and stagnation

For many generations, the Galactic Republic expanded not through military might, but through a subtle yet powerful allure to neighboring systems. The prospect of engaging in commerce with the bustling markets of the Core World held a strong appeal, gradually drawing non-member worlds into closer collaboration with the governing body. Despite this, the Republic was often slow to integrate new systems, as the inclusion of new territories diluted the political influence of existing senators. New member states tended to align with local galactic power structures, while the senators extending invitations primarily represented systems within the Core. Consequently, the Galactic Center served as the Republic's economic and political hub, attracting wealth and authority from the outlying regions, with many senators reluctant to extend services and protection to distant worlds. As a result, numerous strategically important star systems remained in a state of prolonged anticipation—some for centuries—awaiting formal admission into the Congress, even at the expense of the body's overall strength.
Over time, the Republic maintained its stability, growing increasingly influential. Consequently, the galaxy remained largely free from large-scale conflict for centuries. However, many of the bureaucrats and senators entrusted with governing the Republic prioritized personal gain over the collective welfare. Greed, corruption, and internal discord gradually eroded the government's foundations from within. The Core, revitalized from past conflicts and eager to exploit new resources, pursued an aggressive colonization agenda, exploring, mapping, and settling untouched planets within the Outer Systems, negotiating with or simply overpowering the indigenous populations encountered along the way. Adventurous pioneers were granted permission by Coruscant to establish settlements in new territories and establish trading colonies to supply the Core with goods and raw materials for its continued prosperity. Many emerging systems, lacking the capital to extract, process, and transport their resources to market, were compelled to secure high-interest loans from the InterGalactic Banking Clan, often becoming client states to the Muun bankers upon their inability to repay their debts. As time progressed, the laborious task of astrogation using hyperwave beacons—requiring frequent returns to realspace—was streamlined by the establishment of new hyperlanes, such as the Hydian Way. Many systems, eager to capitalize on the opportunities presented by charting hyperlanes through their territory, sought to influence the Republic Senate to secure their place on the galactic map.

Culturally, Coruscanti fashion, art, drama, and literature found receptive audiences throughout the galaxy. In an effort to impress visitors from the Core, many worlds constructed elaborate mansions mirroring the architectural style of the Inner Core. Despite this, many Coruscanti viewed these imitations with disdain, considering them to be nothing more than ostentatious displays. To them, the inhabitants of the galaxy's fringes appeared uncivilized, with many worlds still lacking weather control or struggling with geological instability and food scarcity. Additionally, many outlying worlds, lacking the protection of a federal military, faced constant harassment from pirates and criminal syndicates, reinforcing the perception that those from the galaxy's remote settlements lacked cultural refinement and basic civility.
A deep-seated animosity and mistrust developed over the centuries between the galaxy's outer regions and the cosmopolitan Core, with those in the hinterlands increasingly perceiving themselves as victims of social and economic injustice. As a result of the perceived inadequacy of the Judicial Forces in safeguarding outlying territories, often due to the reluctance of many far-flung worlds to offer the Core Worlds favorable deals, the Outer Rim world of Eriadu—one of the most politically, culturally, and economically advanced worlds—established the Outland Regions Security Force to protect the Seswenna sector. Comprising a diverse fleet of ships, it was primarily funded through off-world loans and equipped with laser and ion cannons acquired from arms merchants who had long disregarded a Republic ban on the sale of weaponry to member worlds. While the Outland Regions Security Force initially struggled, it soon gained recognition for its effectiveness in combating raiders, particularly after Wilhuff Tarkin joined Outland's anti-piracy task force, where he became known for his strategic brilliance and tactical prowess.

A faction known as the Militarists emerged within the Senate, advocating for the establishment of a formal Republic Military. Despite Outland's best efforts, the Outer Rim Territories continued to fall prey to growing corporate influence from the Core, with the monolithic Trade Federation expanding its reach a year before the Invasion of Naboo in both the Outer Rim and the Galactic Senate by exploiting loopholes in existing free-trade legislation. Shortly before the Invasion of Naboo, a trade summit was convened on the Outer Rim planet of Eriadu, during which Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum was turned away by Wilhuff Tarkin, who sought to diminish the Chancellor's influence, as many anticipated his defeat in the upcoming election, in favor of Senator Sheev Palpatine, who had previously assisted Tarkin in gaining admission to the Judicial Academy and supported his appointment as Governor of Eriadu.
Invasion of Naboo

Despite the best intentions of Chancellor Valorum, the Trade Federation initiated a blockade of Naboo due to disagreements concerning the export of plasma. A Judicial delegation transported Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi, to the Saak'ak, a Lucrehulk-class LH-3210 cargo freighter owned by the Trade Federation, with the aim of negotiating a peaceful resolution. However, Darth Sidious, the Dark Lord of the Sith, instructed Viceroy Nute Gunray to commence the invasion of Naboo prematurely and eliminate the Chancellor's Jedi ambassadors. Theed, Naboo's capital, was quickly seized by the Trade Federation Droid Army. The Jedi, having survived the Federation's assassination attempts, escaped to Naboo, where they rescued Queen Padmé Amidala and her retinue.
Amidala embarked on a journey to Coruscant to present her homeworld's case before the Senate. However, the Naboo Royal Starship's T-14 hyperdrive generator suffered damage, necessitating a detour to Tatooine, a remote planet, for repairs. Based on Gunray's report, Sidious ordered his Sith apprentice, Darth Maul, to locate and recapture the queen, as she alone possessed the authority to sign a treaty legitimizing the Federation's occupation of Naboo. Although Maul tracked them to Tatooine, he was unable to prevent the Jedi from escaping with Amidala aboard her repaired starship. Additionally, Jinn took custody of Anakin Skywalker, a freed slave child whom he discovered to be exceptionally strong in the Force. Convinced that he had found the prophesied Chosen One, Jinn brought Skywalker to Coruscant to begin his Jedi training.

Upon her arrival in the capital, Amidala was greeted by Senator Palpatine and Chancellor Valorum. While Valorum assured her of the Senate's concern regarding the situation, Palpatine cautioned her that intervention from either the Senate or the Chancellor was unlikely without a change in leadership. As Naboo's representative in the galactic Senate, Palpatine served as Amidala's advisor and confidant. He informed her that the Senate was rife with corruption and the Chancellor was merely a figurehead controlled by bureaucrats. When the Trade Federation's delegates compelled Valorum to adhere to bureaucratic procedures, Amidala, following Palpatine's counsel despite her initial hesitation to denounce a strong supporter of her world, responded by calling for a Vote of No Confidence in him.
Convinced that the Republic had strayed from its founding principles, Amidala decided to return to her planet to liberate the people of Naboo without relying on the Senate's intervention. Before departing Coruscant, Palpatine informed her of his nomination to succeed Valorum. His rivals included Senator Bail Antilles of Alderaan and Senator Ainlee Teem of Malastare, but Palpatine assured Amidala that he would secure victory in the election due to widespread sympathy for Naboo's plight. He pledged to dedicate his term to eradicating corruption, and Amidala implored him to restore compassion to the Senate.

Unable to depend on assistance from the Republic, Amidala sought the aid of Naboo's Gungan population. Despite the existing animosity between their segregated societies, the shared occupation of their homeworld enabled Amidala to reconcile their differences through diplomacy. The Gungan Grand Army confronted the Trade Federation's battle droids, while the Naboo Royal Space Fighter Corps launched an assault on the Saak'ak in orbit. After their defenses were breached, the Gungans were forced to surrender, and several Naboo Fighter Pilots perished in the space battle. However, Amidala's team infiltrated the Theed Royal Palace, where they captured Gunray. With the Saak'ak destroyed by Skywalker, the droids were deactivated. Following the Battle of Naboo, Gunray was taken into Republic custody, and the newly elected Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine arrived in Theed, where he and the queen exchanged congratulations on their recent successes. The new Chancellor stated that they would cooperate to bring peace and prosperity to the Republic.
Separatist Crisis

In the wake of the Naboo Crisis, the Trade Federation's monopoly over the Outer Rim was dismantled, and Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum's political standing suffered due to the crisis and other scandals. Palpatine succeeded him as Supreme Chancellor, cultivating an image as a humble servant of the common good, despite his true intentions. Simultaneously, escalating tensions between the Core and Outer Rim worlds led many to believe that war was unavoidable. Years before the Invasion of Naboo, Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas foresaw this conflict and advocated for the creation of a new Republic army, but the Jedi High Council rejected his proposal, deeming it too extreme. Undeterred, Sifo-Dyas contacted the Kaminoans, renowned for their clone hatcheries, and secretly commissioned them to create a clone army, falsely claiming to represent the Galactic Senate. Unbeknownst to Sifo-Dyas, Darth Sidious had previously contacted Prime Minister Lama Su and persuaded him to implant a behavioral modification biochip into the clones during the third stage of their development, enabling them to turn against the Jedi upon command.

The skilled duelist and politically idealistic Jedi Master Count Dooku, who had taken an eight-year leave from the Jedi Order and was now secretly Darth Sidious' apprentice, known as Darth Tyranus, paid the Pyke Syndicate to assassinate Sifo-Dyas over the planet Oba Diah. Sifo-Dyas was originally en route to the planet to mediate a dispute that could have triggered a large-scale gang war on Coruscant, but his shuttle was suddenly shot down over Felucia. Dooku brought his body to Felucia, where tribal inhabitants cremated it, and managed to deceive the Jedi Council into believing that Sifo-Dyas had been killed by the Felucians, while simultaneously erasing the existence of Kamino from the Jedi Archives.
In the decade following the Invasion of Naboo, Count Dooku's whereabouts remained largely unknown, with many assuming he simply wished to establish an offshoot of the Jedi Order. In reality, Dooku manipulated galactic events to incite political unrest on various worlds, including Kashyyyk, Sullust, and Onderon. To create a southern Separatist sphere of influence by bringing Yag'Dhul and Sluis Van to his cause, Dooku needed to persuade the now-prosperous world of Eriadu to join the Separatists. However, Wilhuff Tarkin was pressured to declare his loyalties, especially after Dooku commandeered a HoloNet station in the Raxus system and denounced the Galactic Republic, effectively setting the stage for the Separatist Crisis. Tarkin ultimately sided with the Galactic Republic, firmly believing that an inefficient yet unified galaxy was preferable to a fractured one.

Chancellor Palpatine's negotiations with the Separatists failed, prompting the Galactic Senate to consider the Military Creation Act. Senator Amidala led the opposition to the bill, believing it would inevitably lead to war between the Republic and the Separatists. Following an assassination attempt on Amidala's life, the chancellor ordered her to return to Naboo while the Jedi investigated the plot against her. Junior Representative Jar Jar Binks assumed her responsibilities on Coruscant during Amidala's absence. The Jedi's subsequent discovery of two secret armies, the clones and the battle droids, influenced the Senate's subsequent actions. The Loyalists agreed that the Republic needed the clone army, but they felt that the Senate would fail to pass the Military Creation Act before the Separatists attacked the Republic with their droid forces. When Vice Chair Mas Amedda suggested resolving the crisis by granting emergency powers to Chancellor Palpatine, Representative Binks proposed this to the Senate, who passed his bill, enabling Palpatine to officially recognize the clone army as the Grand Army of the Republic. A self-proclaimed proponent of democracy and a Republic patriot, Palpatine assured the senators that he intended to return the powers they had granted him once the crisis was resolved.
The Clone Wars

The Clone Wars commenced with the First Battle of Geonosis. Supported by the Republic Navy, the Grand Army of the Republic engaged the Separatist Droid Army in open combat. The Jedi also participated in the battle, serving as de facto generals for the clone troopers. Concurrently, Poggle the Lesser's schematics for the Ultimate Weapon were transferred to Dooku, who escaped the battle after dueling Skywalker, Kenobi, and Grand Master Yoda. Simultaneously, the various members of the newly formed Confederacy of Independent Systems evacuated the planet as Republic clone troopers gradually forced the droid army into full retreat. The battle was proclaimed a Republic victory, although Yoda held the opposite view, knowing that war would spread throughout the galaxy. Count Dooku traveled to an industrial sector on Coruscant to inform his master that the war had begun as planned, while the Jedi High Council pondered Dooku's warning that the Dark Lord of the Sith controlled the Senate.
In the aftermath of the Battle of Geonosis, the deadly three-year conflict that plunged the galaxy into chaos officially began. Despite being suspicious of Dooku's claim that the Senate was under the Sith's influence, the Jedi continued to serve the Republic. The military rank of Jedi General was created, enabling the Jedi to lead the Grand Army of the Republic in an official capacity. Early in the war, Sidious learned of a splinter faction in the Trade Federation under the Neimoidian Oje N'deeb, who sought to usurp Gunray and offer the Outer Rim a chance for a new future. Initially outraged and contemplating crushing the rebellion outright to ensure the Federation and its legacy remained true to his plans, Sidious quickly realized he could exploit the upstart to his advantage. By turning N'deeb's operation to his own ends, the Outer Rim would be strengthened by N'deeb's faction, prolonging the war. Furthermore, Sidious understood that crushing the "chance" N'deeb offered the Rim would make its people even more bitter towards the Republic.

The worlds caught in the middle of the conflict were forced to choose between the Galactic Republic and its clone army or the ever-expanding Confederacy of Independent Systems and its droid army. As the war progressed, numerous diplomatic envoys engaged in attempts to sway local worlds to join the Galactic Republic, with Jedi Master Yoda seeking to secure the support of the Toydarian King Katuunko. Meanwhile, Sith assassin Asajj Ventress sought to disrupt the meeting and instead win the king's support for the Confederacy. The Republic also provided military aid and support to factions in need, such as Cham Syndulla's Twi'lek Resistance on Ryloth, or the Dugs of Malastare, whose lucrative fuel reserves were a significant asset to the Republic Navy. Numerous worlds, such as Mandalore, also attempted to maintain their neutrality, although they were often forced to seek aid from third parties in times of need.
Throughout the Clone Wars, numerous attempts were made on Supreme Chancellor Palpatine's life, including a kidnapping attempt on Naboo orchestrated by Count Dooku, as well as the hostage-taking of members of the Galactic Senate by notorious bounty hunter Cad Bane. However, political intrigue fueled not only the conflict but also advances in weaponry and the development of equipment to enhance existing armed forces. Separatist scientist Nuvo Vindi launched attempts at biological weapons, seeking to recreate the ancient Blue Shadow Virus capable of killing millions across the galaxy, while the Republic developed the experimental electro-proton bomb, which could emit an electric pulse upon detonation capable of deactivating an entire droid army.

Following the Battle of Malastare, the Republic also attempted to create impenetrable armor by unlocking the biological secrets of the Zillo Beast, an ancient creature from the Mid Rim, only to have the attempt fail, resulting in the beast going on a rampage across Coruscant. After its death at the hands of a Jedi task force, the beast was secretly cloned on orders from the Supreme Chancellor himself. In the meantime, the Republic developed a stealth ship capable of cloaking itself, and upgraded its standard Phase I clone trooper armor to the more sophisticated Phase II clone trooper armor prior to the Battle of Mon Cala.

The Republic utilized the clone army to defeat the Separatists, but the clone troopers were also at the disposal of the Senate. The Coruscant Guard was formed by clone shock troopers stationed on the Republic capital; senatorial delegates were accompanied by clone bodyguards; and the clones became involved in the Republic's internal disputes by acting as enforcers of the Senate. The Senate Guard continued to accompany dignitaries on off-world missions, but as the war progressed, the Coruscant Guard became increasingly responsible for the security of the Supreme Chancellor and the delegates of the Senate.
On one occasion, the Republic deployed a Jedi-led force of clone troopers to Orto Plutonia at the request of one of its members, the Pantoran Assembly. The government of Pantora claimed sovereignty over the planet, which resulted in open conflict between the Pantorans and the native Talz. Although the clones served under the Jedi, they were also beholden to the authority of the Pantoran leader, Chairman Chi Cho, and the Pantoran senator Riyo Chuchi.
Fall of the Republic

Throughout the Clone Wars, Jedi Generals led the Grand Army of the Republic. Despite the many heroic actions taken by the Jedi and the troopers under their command, which inspired the public with tales of bravery, war weariness continued to grow as the years passed. The Republic citizenry began to believe that the Jedi had abandoned their role as peacekeepers, leading to massive protests outside the Jedi Temple. Despite their waning influence in the galaxy, the Jedi continued to lead the Republic's forces, sustaining many casualties in the process. Their role in the conflict was opposed not only by civilians but also by Republic officer Wilhuff Tarkin, who sought to revoke the Order's military authority, convinced that the Jedi Code hindered the Republic's war effort.
Padawan Barriss Offee also disagreed with the Order's involvement in the Clone Wars and staged a bombing in the Jedi Temple as a protest, framing Ahsoka Tano for the act before being captured herself. The Separatist Shadowfeed operation, an attempt by Count Dooku to spread information on Republic defeats and portray a Separatist victory as inevitable, fueled public anxiety and consequently accelerated the militarization of the Republic throughout the war.

The war also served as a means for Sheev Palpatine to amass more emergency powers, solidifying his position as Supreme Chancellor for far longer than technically allowed, while continuing to centralize political and military authority within the Office of the Chancellor, including placing the InterGalactic Banking Clan under the Chancellor's oversight. By gaining wartime powers, Chancellor Palpatine was effectively a dictator.
Palpatine used the war as justification for amending the Galactic Constitution multiple times, enshrining greater power in his office through these changes. He became the most powerful chancellor since before the Ruusan Reformations. Under the Reflex Amendment, he secured near-total control over the military. The Sector Governance Decree, passed towards the end of the war, granted governors appointed by Palpatine authority over neighboring star systems, all in the name of the war effort.

After nearly three years of constant warfare, the war reached its climax during the Battle of Coruscant, where both factions engaged in a massive naval and ground battle over the Republic's capital world. The confrontation ultimately saw the Republic inflict a severe blow on the Confederacy with the loss of a portion of its fleet, as well as its head of state, Count Dooku, at the hands of Anakin Skywalker. Shortly afterward, General Grievous met his end at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi during the Battle of Utapau. Even as the Republic pressed on with the Outer Rim Sieges, determined to end the civil war, the Jedi High Council grew increasingly wary of Palpatine.
Throughout the Clone Wars, the Chancellor's wartime authority reached unprecedented levels at the expense of the Senate, some of whom also grew concerned about the future of the Republic. As a result, members of the Council and the Senate began to consider options for preserving democracy. The Delegation of 2,000 emerged and sought to petition the Chancellor to relinquish his emergency powers, while the Council contemplated the possibility of removing him by force and taking control of the Senate to ensure a peaceful transition of power.

Ultimately, the Council's doubts about the Chancellor were justified when Skywalker discovered the stunning revelation: Sheev Palpatine and Darth Sidious, the Sith Lord pulling the strings of the Clone Wars, were the same person. Realizing the Chancellor had deceived them, the Jedi Council moved to apprehend the Sith Lord before his plans could fully materialize, which triggered a lightsaber battle where Sidious eliminated Agen Kolar, Saesee Tiin, and Kit Fisto before Mace Windu managed to disarm him. Considering the Chancellor's influence over the Senate and the legal system, Windu determined that Sidious was too dangerous to be left alive. However, Skywalker, despite having previously carried out executions himself, argued that such an action went against the Jedi code, a stance influenced by his personal feelings for Amidala, as he believed Sidious held the key to saving her life.
In a desperate act, Skywalker incapacitated Windu, thereby enabling Sidious to unleash a surge of Force lightning that killed the Jedi Order's champion. Having committed to the dark side, the former Jedi Knight transformed into Darth Vader, subsequently leading the assault on the Jedi Temple, while Sidious issued Order 66 to the Grand Army. This command caused the clone soldiers, who were brainwashed, to turn against and murder their Jedi commanders across the galaxy. The execution of Order 66 signified the point of no return for the Republic, sealing its doom, even though Maul insisted that the Republic had already collapsed and the Jedi were simply unaware of it.

At the Chancellor's request, the Senate convened an emergency session. Sidious publicly condemned the Jedi Order, accusing them of plotting his assassination in an attempt to seize control of the Senate and, consequently, the Republic. Simultaneously, Vader embarked on a mission to Mustafar, where he personally eliminated the Separatist Council under Sidious' orders, as they were no longer needed and had become a liability. With the Great Jedi Purge underway and the Separatists eliminated, Sidious announced himself as the Galactic Emperor. The Galactic Republic was officially replaced by the Galactic Empire, with democracy giving way to the fascist New Order. While many senators celebrated the dawn of the Empire, Amidala and Organa silently mourned the demise of the Republic. Vader deactivated the droid army shortly after assassinating the Separatist leadership on Mustafar. The Clone Wars had ended, and its conclusion marked the beginning of the Imperial Era.
Legacy
Empire and rebirth

In the years following the fall of the Galactic Republic, many individuals continued to cherish the memory of the now-defunct Old Republic and its legendary Jedi warriors, while many who had personally known the Jedi refused to accept the Emperor's narrative of a "Jedi Rebellion." The Jedi Order that had served the Republic continued to inspire and survive during the Great Jedi Purge. After being freed from his control chip by former Jedi Ahsoka Tano during the conflict on the Venator-class Star Destroyer Tribunal, the former Clone Captain Rex dedicated himself to fighting against the Empire in the name of the Republic, even declaring to former Clone Sergeant Hunter that they and their clone brothers were living proof that the Republic still existed.
Despite this, the majority of citizens across the galaxy eventually embraced and actively supported the pro-Imperial perspective, believing that the Republic had become weak and corrupt, thus necessitating Palpatine's ascension to power. To erase the memory of the previous government, any visible reminders of the Old Republic were swiftly removed, with organizational changes altering the names of various locations and institutions, while architecture was transformed to reflect a more severe and dark aesthetic. The renaming of the renowned Galactic Senate to the Imperial Senate, the Senate Plaza to Imperial Plaza, and the erection of a massive statue of the Emperor in its place made it easy to forget that the Republic had ever existed.
However, the memory of the Republic as a symbol of freedom and justice could never be completely extinguished as long as those who still believed in it remained alive, thus inspiring numerous resistance movements throughout the Empire's reign, such as the Free Ryloth Movement and Berch Teller's rebel cell. These acts of resistance eventually merged into the Alliance to Restore the Republic before the Battle of Yavin, where the Death Star was destroyed. Subsequent battles included the Battle of Endor, which resulted in the destruction of the second Death Star and the deaths of Sidious and Vader, with the latter finding redemption as Anakin Skywalker. Following their victory at Endor, the Alliance declared itself the New Republic as a tribute to the Old Republic.

However, the New Republic rejected certain aspects of the Old Republic, particularly the legacy of its final years under Sheev Palpatine's chancellorship. The word "Supreme" was removed from the title of Chancellor; Coruscant was stripped of its traditional role as the galactic capital, allowing other worlds to host the restored Galactic Senate on a rotating basis; and the Military Disarmament Act reduced the New Republic Defense Force in the aftermath of the Galactic Civil War. These efforts succeeded in gaining the support of former Separatist worlds for the New Republic, but also led to political divisions in the Senate, where Populists championed the sovereignty of member worlds, while Centrists advocated for increased power and military spending for the central government. Ultimately, the Centrist worlds seceded from the New Republic and joined the First Order, a successor to the Galactic Empire, leading to the Cold War between the two galactic powers.
The story of Old Republic Regent Hylemane Lightbringer and his supposed immortality would be preserved in historical texts, along with Old Republic musical pieces such as the Sestina of Imperator Vex, which continued to be performed even in the months following the Battle of Endor.
Posterity's judgment

The Galactic Republic, celebrated as one of the greatest political achievements in the galaxy's history, was described by the historian Janyor as "the Republic of legend, surpassing distance and time." While earlier iterations existed in the distant past, collectively known as the "Old Republic," posterity credited the modern Republic with rescuing the galaxy from an age of darkness and, with the assistance of the Jedi Order, establishing an era of peace that lasted for a millennium until the outbreak of the Clone Wars. Historians romanticized the Age of the Republic, referring to it as the "last era of peace"—despite occasional conflicts, which were notably few and quickly resolved by Jedi mediators—before the emergence of massive warships and planet-destroying superweapons.
However, the Republic's final years were viewed with less admiration. Historians considered the people of that era to be a generation characterized by apathy and complacency, in which galactic senators prioritized power and luxury over representing their constituents or addressing the perceived inefficiencies of the government. The civilian population was also seen as contributing to the Republic's downfall, with Core Worlders being more interested in podracing events in the remote Outer Rim Territories than the political issues that fueled the Separatist Crisis. Ultimately, historians condemned this generation, holding it accountable for the collapse of the "comfortable civilization" that defined the modern Galactic Republic.
Organization
Politics

The Galactic Republic's institutions included the Office of the Chancellor, the Galactic Senate, and the Judicial Department. Executive authority was vested in the Supreme Chancellor, although this office was largely ineffective and hindered by bureaucratic processes, particularly during Finis Valorum's chancellorship. Nevertheless, the Chancellor had the power to convene the Senate for emergency sessions or to send senators away from Coruscant for security purposes through executive orders.
Sheev Palpatine's chancellorship shifted the balance of power in favor of the Chancellor's office, a result of the wartime powers granted to the leader by the Senate at the start of the Clone Wars. As the conflict spread throughout the galaxy, Palpatine's chancellorship gradually evolved into a dictatorship with control over both the Senate and the Republic courts. Towards the end of the war, Palpatine appointed Anakin Skywalker as his personal representative to the Jedi High Council, an action that the Jedi viewed as an overreach of the Chancellor's authority. By this point, Palpatine had managed to remain in power beyond his term limits, with the support of the Senate.

Before Palpatine's rise to power, the Galactic Senate served as the legislative body of the Republic. Many member worlds across the galaxy had representatives in the Senate, which was based on Coruscant, the Republic's capital. At its peak, the Senate's power surpassed that of the Supreme Chancellor, but it had also become stagnant due to rampant corruption and excessive bureaucracy. As more politicians became enamored with the comforts of their position, prioritizing power and wealth over the needs of their constituents, ordinary citizens questioned whether the Republic and its high taxes were worth the cost of membership. The Jedi had also grown wary of senators, viewing their motives with skepticism, despite the Order's overall allegiance to the Senate.

The Senate's inability to quickly resolve the Invasion of Naboo or the Separatist Crisis was due to political infighting and strict adherence to protocol. Instead of seeking a diplomatic solution, the Senate united under Chancellor Palpatine's leadership. However, the decision to grant him emergency powers weakened their own authority, allowing Palpatine to accumulate even more power at the Senate's expense. During the Clone Wars, the Senate was divided between those who supported the war effort and pacifists who sought a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
The Judicial Department oversaw the Republic courts, including the Supreme Court, the highest court in the Republic. Its authority also extended to the Judicial Forces and the Republic Office of Criminal Investigations. However, like its legislative counterpart, the courts were plagued by bureaucratic stagnation and were known to be even more indecisive than the Senate. Despite Nute Gunray's arrest, multiple Supreme Court trials failed to remove him from his position as leader of the Trade Federation, much to the dismay of the Naboo government.

Propaganda in the Galactic Republic had long been used to influence public opinion in favor of Republic policies, from expanding into the Outer Rim Territories to waging a galaxy-wide war against the Separatists. One such propaganda tool was the Commission for the Protection of the Republic (COMPOR). Established in the early days of the Clone Wars, COMPOR functioned as a pro-Republic populist movement. The organization's mission was twofold: to promote patriotism within the Republic and to portray the Separatists as traitors. This was achieved through the artwork of Donclode Onstruss, Hamma Elad, and other artists associated with COMPOR.
Throughout the conflict, COMPOR propagandists sought to maintain support for the war effort by ensuring that public opinion remained on the side of the Republic's military forces and their commander-in-chief, namely the clone army and Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine. Following an initial attempt to use the Jedi Order as a propaganda tool, COMPOR increasingly focused on the Grand Army of the Republic, depicting clone troopers as a symbol of unity that citizens were encouraged to support. In contrast, COMPOR portrayed Separatist leaders, particularly General Grievous and Count Dooku, as symbols of "evil." By exploiting loyalty to the Republic and fear of the Separatists, COMPOR lobbied the Galactic Senate to grant more emergency powers to Chancellor Palpatine, whom they supported as a wartime leader.
The Galactic Republic also established the Apprentice Legislature, also known as the Junior Senate, for politically inclined young people who aspired to a future career in politics. The Apprentice Legislature was given real, though minor and non-sensitive, issues to address. Padmé Amidala, the last Republic senator of Naboo, was an Apprentice Legislator at the age of eight. The Apprentice Legislature continued to exist under the Republic's successor, the Galactic Empire, although by 3 BBY, only forty worlds still sent representatives to the Legislature.
Political divisions

All political entities within the Galactic Republic possessed full sovereignty, sharing in both the privileges and obligations that came with being part of the Republic. Corporations and guilds were also permitted to join the Republic, each sending democratically elected representatives on behalf of their governments or trade groups from across the galaxy to the Galactic Senate.
A series of treaties between various entities governed the existence of the Republic Defense Coalition during the High Republic Era. These treaties included defense provisions that required Republic members, such as Chandrila and Alderaan, to loan military assets, including starships and personnel, for as long as they were needed, after which they would be returned to their homeworlds.
As a result of the Military Creation Act, the Corellia system, one of the founding systems of the Galactic Republic, was able to close its borders without withdrawing from the Republic during the Separatist Crisis.
Foreign policy

The Senate chose not to intervene in the Open-Closed war on Carnelion IV because the planet was not a member of the Galactic Republic. Carnelion IV had not joined the Republic because the Senate had limited economic interest in the planet. The Republic's diplomatic fleet subsequently brokered a ceasefire to the Open-Closed war after Kenobi falsely claimed that the planet had high concentrations of tibanna gas in its atmosphere in order to end the long-running conflict.
During the Clone Wars, the Republic respected the political stance of neutral governments, including the New Mandalorians. Their leader, Duchess Satine Kryze, was a staunch pacifist who sought to keep her homeworld and its allies out of the conflict through her position as head of the Council of Neutral Systems. The Republic and Mandalore had coexisted through treaties for over a century by the time of the Clone Wars, though the Senate eventually sanctioned a plan to invade Mandalore, believing that Kryze's pacifist government could not protect the Mandalorian people from the Death Watch movement. However, the invasion was called off due to evidence that the Senate's justification for war—the testimony of Deputy Minister Jerec—had been fabricated.

Mandalore served as the location for attempted peace negotiations between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, with Duchess Satine overseeing the conference. Both governments sent their delegates to the neutral world, along with Republic Senate Commandos and Separatist BX-series droid commandos. However, negotiations failed, allowing the war to continue without interruption.
During the war, although Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine claimed that the Republic was willing to assist neutral star systems in times of crisis, the Senate and the Republic as a whole almost always declined to provide aid, especially military aid, to neutral governments as a matter of policy. Any government that broke its neutrality by siding with the Separatist Alliance risked becoming an enemy of the Republic. When the InterGalactic Banking Clan began favoring the Separatists at the Republic's expense, the Republic retaliated by deploying an invasion force to occupy the planet Scipio.

Despite Mandalore's neutrality, Ahsoka Tano and Bo-Katan Kryze requested the Grand Army's assistance in deposing the Shadow Collective that had taken over Satine Kryze's government. Although the Jedi were hesitant to become involved in the Mandalorian civil war while already engaged in the Clone Wars, especially given the world's official neutrality, they authorized a division of the 501st Legion to support the Mandalore resistance in the Siege of Mandalore.
During the Clone Wars, the Republic made indirect contact with the Chiss Ascendancy through Jedi General Anakin Skywalker's encounter with Senior Captain Mitth'raw'nuruodo "Thrawn," an officer in the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet. Thrawn had been tasked with exploring the Outer Rim when the Ascendancy, having discovered a mysterious threat in the Unknown Regions, sought to evaluate the Galactic Republic as a potential ally. Thrawn gathered information about the Clone Wars through his interactions with Skywalker, who, in turn, enlisted the Chiss officer's help in rescuing Senator Padmé Amidala. Skywalker was impressed by Thrawn during their collaboration, which he later reported to Chancellor Palpatine. However, Thrawn was not impressed by the Republic, believing that democracy was an inefficient form of government.
Defense
Republic Defense Coalition

The Republic Defense Coalition, also known as the RDC, was established as a small peacekeeping fleet to protect the interests of the Galactic Republic during the High Republic Era. The RDC was formed through defense treaties signed by the Republic's member worlds, including Alderaan and Chandrila. These treaties granted the RDC the authority to allocate starships and personnel from the signatory worlds in times of emergency. These resources remained under the RDC's control until the threat was neutralized, after which they were returned to their homeworlds. The Republic also maintained formations of Republic peacekeeping troops, who were deployed to quell conflicts within Republic territory.
The fleet consisted of various starship types, such as Emissary-class cruisers, Pacifier-class sector patrol cruisers, Longbeam cruisers, and Z-28 Skywing starfighters. Despite the existence of the RDC, the Republic was experiencing an era of peace that had lasted for centuries, with neither the Hutts nor the Mandalorians posing a threat. As a result, the Emissary-class was designed to resemble a work of art, with its crenellations and spires symbolizing the Republic's state of tranquility. The RDC also worked alongside the Jedi Order, allowing the peacekeepers to store their personalized starfighters, the Jedi Vectors, in the hangars of its Emissary-class cruisers. The Republic rescue fleet was also maintained during the High Republic era.
Judicial Forces

The Judicial Forces were the armed peacekeeping forces of the Galactic Republic Judicial Department. While the Jedi assisted in maintaining order and peace under the authority of the Galactic Senate, they were not considered a standing military. As government officers, Judicials had access to Consular-class space cruisers. The distinctive design and color of Republic cruisers identified them as diplomatic vessels, often used by delegates of the Galactic Senate, agents of the Supreme Chancellor, or members of the Jedi Order.
In the final decades of the Republic, the Jedi effectively replaced the Judicial Forces as arbiters of the Senate. As a result, Judicials primarily served in a supporting role, escorting Jedi ambassadors on their offworld missions.
Republic Military

Towards the conclusion of the Separatist Crisis, the Galactic Senate enacted the Military Creation Act, resulting in the establishment of both the Grand Army of the Republic and the Republic Navy. Armed with armor, weaponry, and equipment, clone troopers formed the core of the Republic Military. Bred for unwavering loyalty and exceptional combat skills, clones represented the cutting edge of galactic warfare during the Clone Wars, a conflict named after these very soldiers. The rigorous training regime transformed clone troopers into a highly effective military force, and their capacity for creative thought, despite their limited autonomy, made them superior to their droid counterparts. In their inaugural engagement against the Separatist Droid Army, the Grand Army demonstrated a level of military prowess previously unseen in the galaxy's history.

Generally, clones took pride in their role as soldiers within the Galactic Republic. While a small fraction engaged in acts of treachery, such as desertion or spying for the Separatists, the majority remained steadfast in their dedication, with numerous troopers willingly sacrificing themselves for the Republic's cause. Their loyalty extended not only to the Supreme Chancellor but also to the Jedi, who held positions as generals within the Grand Army of the Republic. Throughout the extended campaigns of the Clone Wars, a robust sense of trust flourished between Jedi generals and clone commanders.
Several distinct types of clone soldiers stood apart from the standard ranks of their brethren. The Advanced Recon Commandos, for instance, were renowned for their elite status and their capacity for independent decision-making. Another specialized category was the clone commando, highly skilled operatives trained to execute missions that were too intricate for regular soldiers.

Alongside the Acclamator-class transgalactic military assault ship and various other support ships, the Venator-class Star Destroyer served as the primary warship within the Republic Navy. Functioning as both a cargo transport and a troop carrier, the Venator was also engineered for ship-to-ship engagements. Notably, the Venator featured a sizable hangar designed to accommodate state-of-the-art Republic starfighters.
The Republic Navy deployed a diverse array of vessels throughout the duration of the war. Early models included the V-19 Torrent starfighter and the Clone Z-95 Headhunter. As the war neared its end, new fighters were incorporated into the Navy. The Aggressive ReConnaissance-170 starfighter represented the pinnacle of starfighter technology, while the Alpha-3 Nimbus-class V-wing starfighters integrated design enhancements from both the ARC-170 and the earlier V-19.
Jedi Order

The Galactic Republic placed its confidence and absolute trust in the Jedi Order, depending on Jedi Knights to protect peace and uphold justice within the galaxy. The Galactic Senate had successfully governed the galaxy for a millennium thanks to the Order's assistance. The Senate was the Order's primary allegiance, although the Jedi became distrustful of politics in the Republic's final years, believing that politicians were unreliable. Nevertheless, the Order kept a tight bond with the Republic in order to carry out its mandate as guardians of peace.
The Order could find Force-sensitives soon after they were born, as long as they were born inside the Republic. Most of the Republic's population regarded giving a Force-sensitive child to the Order as a great honor and a personal sacrifice. The Order turned into the real family of every child brought into its ranks, and Jedi doctrine forbade them from getting to know their biological families. As a result, familial attachment was given up in favor of serving the Order.

The Order's 10,000 members at the height of the Clone Wars were insufficient to defend the Republic. As a result, the Jedi were forced to lead the clone army in order to bring the conflict between the Republic and the Separatists to a swift and decisive conclusion. Anti-war marches broke out on Coruscant as Republic citizens denounced their leaders and the Jedi alike when the war showed no signs of ending. Darth Sidious accused the Order of staging a rebellion to overthrow the Senate and their chancellor when the Clone Wars came to an end. The Senate backed the chancellor's actions, which included purging the Order and reorganizing the Republic into the Galactic Empire.
Economy
The Republic credit served as the Galactic Republic's currency. However, outside of Republic territory, credits were worthless on frontier planets such as Tatooine.
The Republic had enormous economic power, having maintained peace throughout the known galaxy for nearly a millennium with the help of the Jedi Knights. Peace, in turn, promoted commerce. Naboo and other culturally rich worlds thrived on lucrative tourism under the Republic's protection.

The business sector saw exponential growth in wealth and influence as a result of widespread commercialism, with massive corporations pouring large sums of money into advertising their essential services to the galaxy at large. This unrestrained "brand-building" effort generated consistent revenues for large corporations such as the Trade Federation.
The Republic's expansion into the Outer Rim Territories proved profitable for both the galactic government and the private sector. Eleven Star Marketing, a subsidiary of the Trade Federation, collaborated closely with the Republic Ministry of Economic Development to propagandize the exploration and colonization of the Outer Rim, persuading lower-class Inner Rim citizens to see the galactic frontier as a potential profit opportunity. This arrangement would entangle Republic politicians with corporate lobbyists, both of whom profited from the influx of settlers who were required to pay tariffs and registration fees in order to reach the Outer Rim via one of the Federation's hyperspace routes.

The Separatist Crisis had a significant impact on the Republic economy, with major worlds such as Serenno, Raxus, and Onderon seceding from the pan-galactic union. As a result, the Republic lost access to the Separatist worlds' resources and tax revenue. Reduced tax revenue only exacerbated the Republic's debt, plunging the Senate into a crisis that eventually led to open war between the Republic and the Separatist Alliance.
The Clone Wars disrupted the galactic economy as the Senate exhausted its options for funding the Grand Army of the Republic while avoiding bankruptcy. The government urged its citizens to buy war bonds, using propaganda to persuade them that it was their patriotic duty to financially support the war effort. Furthermore, the Republic sought to keep its war chest full by imposing higher taxes on civilian skylanes, which was unprecedented on cosmopolitan worlds such as Coruscant.
The Senate also weighed the need for additional clone troopers against the cost of growing supplemental units to replenish the Grand Army's ranks. Funding the military had virtually bankrupted the Republic treasury, which, in turn, shut down some of the basic services that the Republic had always provided to civilians living in Coruscant's lower levels.

Prior to the Clone Wars, the Republic imposed regulations on the banking industry, but the war's rising cost prompted the Senate to consider deregulating the banks in order to gain access to new lines of credit. Following considerable debate, the Senate passed the Republic financial reform bill. The banks were deregulated, and the Republic applied for additional loans to support the production of more clone units.
Following the Republic's invasion of Scipio, the InterGalactic Banking Clan surrendered its financial assets to Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine's office. As a result, the Republic gained direct control over one of the galaxy's most powerful commerce guilds.
Despite the Clone Wars' heavy toll on the Republic treasury, the Republic remained a powerful economic force in the galaxy. The Separatist Alliance, while supported by the resources of corporate barons, was eventually overwhelmed by the Republic's economic and military might.
Science and technology
The Galactic Republic invested in both aesthetics and technological advancements for the starship industry. During the Republic's reign, starships were designed to be aesthetically pleasing in order to meet the customers' demand for "style and elegance" in their vessels. Craftsmanship, however, gave way to practicality as the Republic transitioned into the Galactic Empire, leading to the decline of sleek lines in favor of harsh uniformity, mass production, and sheer size.

Cloning was a science in which an organism was "genetically duplicated into one or more identical copies." While neither the Senate nor the Jedi were aware of the clone army's development prior to the Clone Wars, the Republic became heavily invested in the field of genetics throughout its conflict with the Separatists. The Kaminoans used their skills to turn the science of cloning into a lucrative business, resulting in the mass production of clone troopers in the millions. Their expertise nearly perfected the art of genetic duplication. However, cloning humans was still an imperfect science that occasionally resulted in aberrations. Nonetheless, the Kaminoans' cloning methods enabled the alteration of clones at the genetic level, making them more docile and aging them twice as fast as naturally born humans. They were also capable of engineering a clone for the purpose of pure genetic replication, without growth acceleration or behavioral modification for greater docility.

The Clone Wars motivated the Republic to pioneer technological advancements in spacecraft and terrestrial transportation for military purposes. The result was a legacy with far-reaching consequences in the science and technology industries. The Star Destroyer, the most visible representation of modern military capital ships, originated with the development of the Republic Navy's Venator-class Star Destroyer. The X-wing starfighter evolved from the Z-95 Headhunter; the BTL Y-wing starfighter was developed during the Clone Wars and remained relevant long after the Republic's demise. In response to the Separatist Armored Assault Tank and other droid battle tanks, the Republic developed all-terrain walkers, including the six-legged All Terrain Tactical Enforcer. This, in turn, influenced the developmental design of far larger vehicles, such as the Imperial All Terrain Armored Transport and the First Order All Terrain MegaCaliber Six, than what the Republic fielded in the Clone Wars.

The Republic employed brilliant scientists like Doctor Sionver Boll and Doctor Nala Se, who contributed their expertise to the war effort against the Separatists. Boll created the electro-proton bomb, an experimental explosive device capable of generating a massive burst of electromagnetic pulse energy to disable battle droids and other forms of technology. Nala Se was the leading scientist in the field of cloning, overseeing the development of the Republic's clone army, while Boll was also familiar with cloning as Chancellor Palpatine ordered her to clone a dead Zillo Beast.

The Republic Special Weapons Group was established to oversee the development of military technology more advanced than conventional weapons of warfare. The group was made up of technologists such as Wilhuff Tarkin and Orson Callan Krennic; they began implementing plans to build the ultimate weapon using the Geonosians' schematics for a moon-sized battle station. Their work continued after the Republic fell, and after years of delay the DS-1 Death Star Mobile Battle Station was made operational by the Empire. Both its size and power inspired the creation of more advanced weapons with the capacity to destroy planets, from the Imperial DS-2 Death Star II Mobile Battle Station to the First Order's Starkiller Base and the axial superlaser cannons of the Final Order's Xyston-class Star Destroyers.
According to Peli Motto, a technician who lived on Tatooine, technology from the Galactic Republic era was scarce by the time of the New Republic Era. Nonetheless, Motto attempted to obtain the parts required to rebuild a derelict N-1 starfighter for her client, the Mandalorian Din Djarin. The N-1, a starfighter from the Galactic Republic era, was made of pre-Empire handmade components and was therefore not manufactured by droids. One such component was a turbonic venturi power assimilator that Motto obtained from a group of Jawas.
Society and culture
Civilization

The Galactic Republic governed the galaxy as a democratic union, and as such, it encompassed a diverse society of humans and various alien species. Coruscant, in particular, exemplified Republic society with its diverse blend of citizens and culture, earning the Republic capital the title of the galaxy's "vibrant heart." Trillions of people lived under the Republic's rule as a galactic government, and each of those beings had their own thoughts and opinions on current events; as a result, complete consensus was impossible, yet successful Chancellors, such as Lina Soh, nonetheless proved it was possible to bring about effective, galactic rule. Soh, in particular, emphasized the benefits of collaboration in improving life for everyone. Others failed to achieve the same level of unity due to impossible promises, threats, or abuse of power.
The Core Worlds, where Coruscant was located, were home to the most developed systems in the Republic. Several Core planets served as capitals for galactic governments such as the Old Republic, the Empire, and the New Republic. The Core's prosperity made its worlds the wealthiest and most prestigious members of the Republic, but it also caused tension between the Core and the galaxy's more remote regions. People who lived outside of the Core generally saw "Core Worlders" as arrogant, entitled, and indifferent to the well-being and needs of other regions. A common criticism of Republic politics was that the system disproportionately favored the Core Worlds to the point of ignoring the rest of the galaxy.

Coruscant was seen as perpetuating the Core Worlds' reputation for extreme wealth and privilege. Despite its unique status as the galactic capital, the entire planet was covered by a city of levels built upon levels throughout galactic history. The tallest skyscrapers rose more than five thousand levels above the planet's natural surface, and only those who could afford to live in the upper city had access to the comfortable and luxurious lifestyle for which Coruscant was known. The disparity was so great that the lower levels were notorious for widespread crime, poverty, and a lack of natural sunlight.
Republic architecture was distinguished by its sweeping lines. This design was prominently featured on the city-covered planet of Coruscant, though the Republic gradually adopted a brutalist or bold form of architecture by the time of the Clone Wars. Introduced by military architects such as Orson Krennic, it eventually supplanted the Republic style as the Galactic Empire's dominant architectural form.
Galactic Basic Standard was the Republic's most widely spoken language, primarily by humans and the Pantorans. The Gungans of Naboo spoke a heavily accented dialect of Basic with numerous differences in grammar and vocabulary. The translation of the Sith language, known as ur-Kittât, was prohibited by Galactic Republic law. As a result, protocol droids were programmed to avoid translating the Sith language. Darth Sidious believed that the Republic outlawed ur-Kittât out of fear of the Sith Order and its knowledge.

The peaceful era of the Republic allowed the galaxy's inhabitants to engage in leisure activities, some of which gained galactic recognition. The Boonta Eve Classic, while based on the independent Outer Rim world of Tatooine, beyond the Republic frontier, received coverage and attention as far away as the Core Worlds. The Republic's twilight years became an era of escapism prior to the Clone Wars, as citizens of all classes sought entertaining distractions from their daily lives. Professional podrace circuits and other circuses diverted people's attention away from the growing corruption that permeated the Galactic Senate. Nonetheless, the general public's fascination with various forms of entertainment was fueled by an innate desire for stories about good versus evil and situations of escalating danger.

Whereas the Republic evolved over the centuries of its existence, the Jedi Order remained rooted in its ancient traditions, effectively pitting the Jedi Code against a galactic society that strongly favored the future over the past. The inhabitants of the Core Worlds became obsessed with notions of fame and fashion, and they had little interest in Jedi principles such as faith and tradition. The Order maintained its position in the Republic by relying on historical precedent, serving as keepers of peace and justice. Unlike corporate institutions that marketed their services to the galaxy at large, the Order had little interest in promoting itself through image-building. Aside from those who witnessed the Jedi's heroics and were awed by their Force powers, the Order and its ways remained forever mysterious to the majority of the Republic's citizenry. The Jedi were seen by the public as an order of mystics at best and, at worst, as a zealous sect of warmongers.
The Republic developed a sense of manifest destiny as a result of territorial expansion. Republic propagandists cultivated this cultural belief in order to foster civic pride among the populace, so that they would ultimately feel obligated to support the Republic's expansion from rim to rim. Republic patriotism grew exponentially as a result of the Clone Wars and the accompanying propaganda that promoted loyalty to the state. Patriotic messages motivated an entire generation, but they were unable to enlist in the Grand Army because it was exclusively made up of clone troopers. Nonetheless, Republic citizens felt compelled to do their part by purchasing war bonds, reporting acts of treason, and making sacrifices to support the war effort. The Republic crest, the symbol of a united galaxy under the Force, was emblazoned on military war machines and heraldry, appearing more prominently than ever before.
Despite the Republic's expansion into the Outer Rim Territories, the region was too underdeveloped to have the same stability as the Core Worlds. As the galaxy's largest region, the Outer Rim was extremely diverse, with a wide range of planets and species. The Republic government had little oversight over the Outer Rim due to the region's distance from the Core, and as a result, the Outer Rim remained known for its lawless, sparsely populated, and primitive worlds. Republic law was virtually nonexistent in the Outer Rim, allowing bounty hunters, outlaws, and smugglers to operate with impunity, and slavery was still practiced despite the Republic's anti-slave laws.
Xenophobia

Chancellor Soh wanted to promote unity among the various species that made up the Republic during the High Republic Era, using the phrase "We are all the Republic" to emphasize that they were all part of the system; however, xenophobia was a problem in a society as diverse as the Republic. Although the Republic officially promoted unity among its member worlds and outlawed the enslavement of sentient species, some people were subjected to racial stereotypes. For example, some people, including those with anti-corporate views, considered Neimoidians to be obese, duplicitous, and avaricious. This perception of their race stemmed from Neimoidian culture, which fostered a "survival of the fittest" mentality in Neimoidian younglings.
The Trade Federation used xenophobic sentiments to silence its critics, implying that those who sought to curtail the Federation's massive influence were prejudiced against its Neimoidian leaders. Similarly, the Muuns had an image problem due to their monopoly in the InterGalactic Banking Clan. In general, Muuns saw little need to build a stable and trusting relationship with the galaxy; they simply assumed that their role in society was to continue dominating galactic finances. Their cultural standards influenced their business practices, and as a result, Muun-sponsored advertisements were regarded as "distant and disconnected."
Anti-alien prejudice grew during the Clone Wars as a result of the non-human races that made up the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Vice Chancellor Mas Amedda sought to promote the Republic's multicultural aspect, having noticed the attention given to human citizens by the Republic media. Rather than reporting on Amedda's efforts to showcase Republic diversity, HoloNet News outlets focused on the Vice Chancellor's self-inclusion as the only Chagrian in an assembly of various aliens. The populace condemned Amedda's message of strength and unity, and considered him to be an egocentric narcissist.

Due to the Separatists' heavy use of battle droids, the Clone Wars significantly amplified the public's anti-droid sentiment. While droids had become a common aspect of galactic life, and despite the fact that machines were always owned by organic beings, the conflict solidified the idea that droids posed a danger to all biological life. The Republic exploited this feeling, employing propaganda to portray droids as heartless and harmful instruments of destruction. Although battlefield droids, such as the B1-series battle droid, B2-series super battle droid, and the droideka, were the main representations of "droid terror," administrative aide droids were seen as a distinct form of "droid threat" to the Republic's security. Among the Core's wealthy population, there was an increasing worry that personal assistant droids used by business leaders and government officials might be compromised by spyware and used for Separatist espionage.
The Clone Wars also led to widespread anti-Jedi sentiment, despite the Jedi Order's long history of serving the Republic for thousands of years. The Sith conspired to damage the bond between the Republic's citizens and their Jedi protectors, utilizing the Clone Wars to undermine the Republic's confidence in the Order. Although the Order worked hard to bring the war to a quick and decisive conclusion, many citizens came to believe that the Jedi were in fact warmongers. The Jedi's reluctance to accept praise or embrace their celebrity status contributed to the growth of this view. The Order preferred to serve in the shadows rather than engage with the general public; therefore, the populace's anti-Jedi attitudes stemmed from the Order's cultural absence rather than a genuine rejection of their principles.
Astrography

The Galactic Republic's expansion, with Coruscant—the human species' point of origin—as its center, followed pioneering hyperspace routes. In distant regions like the Tertiary Usaita system, survey teams put up navigational beacons, enabling colonists from the Core Worlds to travel outward toward the Outer Rim in search of improved circumstances and fresh opportunities.
Spanning from the Core Worlds to the Outer Rim Territories, the Galactic Republic encompassed the known galaxy. The Republic's heartland was the Core Worlds, which included cosmopolitan planets like Coruscant and Hosnian Prime, as well as Alderaan, one of the Republic's oldest and most esteemed planets. The addition of new member worlds was a result of Republic expansionism over time. Naboo, a planet in the Mid Rim, was incorporated into the Republic in 867 BBY.

Chancellor Orlen Mollo reflected on the beneficial paradox of Republic expansion during the High Republic Era, when the Republic was aggressively looking for new hyperspace lanes and member planets in the Outer Rim. The Republic grew with each new hyperlane, but the galactic community shrunk. As a result, planets in the galaxy found it simpler to communicate with one another. The Republic was also actively attempting to grow communications into a functioning network in the Rim, in addition to looking for new hyperspace routes, in an effort to strengthen alliances and put an end to emerging conflicts. The Republic exercised the majority of its authority from the Core Worlds to the Mid Rim's borders, to the point where businesses engaged in their legally questionable activities in areas where the Republic had little influence, despite the efforts made to integrate those worlds into the galactic community during the High Republic Era.

The Republic, facing problems such as overpopulation and poverty among the lower classes, shifted its attention to the Outer Rim, implementing a policy of expansion into the uncharted regions of the known galaxy's farthest frontier. Political and corporate-sponsored messages of a life filled with adventure and mystery enticed those who lived on the congested planets of the galactic core into deep space. During the High Republic Era, for example, courageous citizens and families from the overpopulated Core and Colonies worlds traveled to the Outer Rim using the few well-mapped hyperspace routes into the Rim. The Nihil, who took advantage of the Republic's lack of law, could still be found in the Outer Rim in particular, where they waged war with the Republic for daring to enter their territories. The Outer Rim remained a region where the Republic had little power into the late Republic Era, despite the efforts made during the High Republic period.

Even though the Republic was against secession, it essentially gave up control of the territories that made up the Separatist Alliance. The Grand Army of the Republic's constant losses and recaptures of worlds caused its territorial extent to fluctuate greatly during the Clone Wars. As a result of the conflict, the Republic did, however, also acquire new territory. Geonosis, the planet where the Separatist Droid Army was secretly constructed, was located outside of the Republic's borders. After the First Battle of Geonosis, the Republic Military occupied the Geonosian homeworld, and after it fell back under Separatist control, they came back to reconquer the planet. The Kaminoan government formally joined the Republic; as a result, Kamino, an extragalactic planet, was granted full representation in the Galactic Senate because it had supplied the Republic with its clone industry.
Behind the scenes
The "Old Republic" was the first time the Galactic Republic was mentioned in the new Star Wars canon, in the 1977 film Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, which was directed by George Lucas. Lucas also directed the 1999 film Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, in which the entity made its debut and was first identified as the "Galactic Republic."
